EVENTS DIARY JUNE-AUGUST 2015

Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell: Friday 17 July Part of Summertyne Americana Festival

A fond farewell Welcome to our latest diary! At the centre of our summer again sits the SummerTyne Americana festival, of which The Sun once said “It has taken an inspired, beautifully realised event in the NE of England to truly capture Americana spirit in a music festival. SummerTyne Americana Festival was a towering success.” This year, completing Sage Gateshead’s 10th Birthday celebrations is also our 10th SummerTyne Americana, and we are thrilled to be welcoming two of the greatest doyennes of Country and Americana. Friday night see’s Emmylou Harris perform with her old friend and collaborator Rodney Crowell, whilst the Saturday night headline slot see’s Rosanne Cash take the stage. Song-writing legends of soul music from Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham will also be playing the weekend, plus a plethora of other new and emerging artists. With ticketed performances indoors and delicious free performances outdoors, plus family shows, join-in choirs, films, talks and much more, join us for this much loved annual weekend of great music and great fun.

Also in these summer months Royal Northern Sinfonia complete their Beethoven symphony cycle (with the Eroica) then move to Hall 2 for their wonderfully engaging Summer Chamber Series; Opera North bring us their outstandingly cast Flying Dutchman; both halls welcome a veritable galaxy of unmissable visiting stars across the musical landscape; Gateshead Old Town Hall offers its own alternative menu of delights (including celebrating the extraordinary jazz talent, so brutally cut short, of Keith Morris), and as ever there are special year-end programmes by our students at all levels – while the Concourse programme ranges from another vivid Jolomo exhibition to a welcome return of the wildly colourful National Association of Flower Arrangement Show. In the last diary, I challenged you to be adventurous in exploring elements of our huge programme that are new to you, rather than just savouring familiar pleasures! In this, my very last Welcome, I ask you to give the same ocean of friendship and support, trust and belief to my wonderful successor Abigail Pogson as for the past fifteen years you have so generously given to me. Goodbye, and thank you…

Anthony Sargent CBE General Director
