Music Live Under Five Where our youngest musicians play and learn
Sage Gateshead’s weekly family musicmaking classes support children’s love of music and learning from an early age. The Mini Musicians classes for 0-4 years and Baby Musicians classes for 0-12 months include songs, dances and games which help to gently support development and help you experience just how magical music can be for the whole family.
“The other parents, grandparents and guardians are all lovely too - if your child wants to scream, they can or if they want a quieter session, that’s fine too. Anything goes. The tutors accept that and work with the child as they are.
Caroline had been attending Early Years classes at Sage Gateshead since her son, Elliot, was three months old. Elliot is now six and Caroline currently comes to the Music Live Under Five class with her three year old daughter, Joss.
“The children have developed a real interest in music and love to sing, dance and play the piano in the house. The songs from the classes creep into our daily life and I’m not afraid to sing the Little Green Frog in public to stop a tantrum!
“Baby groups can be daunting, but here at Sage Gateshead I found the classes to be comfortable, welcoming and non-judgemental”, she said.
Caroline has seen changes in both of her children since they started attending the early years classes.
“The classes are really interactive and the tutors, as musicians themselves, adapt their plans and engage with the children individually. The classes are fun and engaging for both adults and children, putting everyone at ease! “Sometimes I’d arrive at the class stressed, for whatever reason, but by the time I left, the class and the tutor had helped me to de-stress. The tutors often read the mood and emotions of the parents as well as those of the children.” Caroline, Elliot and Joss have all made good friends in the classes and have gone on to socialise with them outside of the building.
18
“The first time I came I was on my own and feeling self-conscious as a new mum but then I met likeminded people and felt at ease. We often stay in the café afterwards with others from the class and the children can continue to play.
“Both Elliot and Joss have benefitted socially, they have grown in confidence and are happy to interact with adults and other children. Children are listened to during the class and as a result Elliot and Joss both feel comfortable approaching the musician.” We’ve been to some of the other family events during the school holidays too. One of my favourite moments was during a Baby Sinfonia concert, Joss was mesmerised by the flute player and crawled over to her, so the flautist came and sat on the floor and continued playing whilst Joss sat curiously alongside her. It was very emotional for me!” Music Live Under Five classes take place Monday - Saturday during term time. Find out more at sagegateshead.com

Five minutes with… John Suchet This February, we’ll be celebrating 250 years since Beethoven’s birth - and what better way to celebrate than by performing all nine symphonies? Our Big Beethoven Weekend will be presented by Classic FM favourite and Beethoven obsessive John Suchet, and we caught up with him to find out more about what makes him tick.
What does Beethoven mean to you? I cannot imagine life without Beethoven’s music. Every note he wrote sits on my phone in my pocket. Not a day goes by without listening to something he wrote - most often one of the piano sonatas. The 32 piano sonatas are his autobiography. If you had to listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be? Jörg Demus, an Austrian pianist, recorded Beethoven’s Op.110 piano sonata on the last piano Beethoven owned. After the recording was made, a protective cover was put over the keyboard. The piano sits today in Beethoven’s birthplace in Bonn. When I bought the CD there, I was told, “This is the last time Beethoven’s voice was heard.”

Tell us about the first concert you ever went to, and the last. As a schoolboy aged 16 on a trip to Vienna, we were taken to Vienna State Opera to hear Beethoven’s Fidelio. It took Beethoven eight years, and three versions, to bring this masterpiece to fruition. I slept through the entire thing. My most recent concert was introducing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.5, the ‘Emperor’. However many times you hear his music, something new and different always leaps out at you. What song is your guilty pleasure (even though we don’t really believe in guilty pleasures at Sage Gateshead!)? Frank Sinatra’s I’ve Got You Under My Skin. There is a fabulous trombone solo in the middle of it. The trombonist improvised it in rehearsal, and Sinatra liked it so much he told the trombonist to do it on the recording. I love it that, just for a few seconds, a fellow trombonist takes the spotlight.

What are you most excited about during the Beethoven Weekend? The chance to immerse myself in the music of the greatest composer who ever lived. His music will be listened to for as long as mankind exists. Many years ago, after my Beethoven talk, an elderly man came up to me and said, “I just want you to know Beethoven saved my life. Twice.” He walked away with no further explanation. Experience all nine symphonies played by five amazing orchestras at Big Beethoven Weekend 1: The Symphonies, from 22-23 February. RNS Supporters Get Closer to Royal Northern Sinfonia and support their future! We think our orchestra is pretty special. As well as performing world-class concerts at Sage Gateshead, they take their music across the region, reaching people who might not otherwise get the chance to hear live, classical music. They have launched RNS Moves (an ensemble that brings together able and disabled musicians), and they inspire young musicians learning here and in schools. They fly the flag for the North East across the globe. But tickets sales alone are not enough to fund all this great work. We need your help. From just ÂŁ10 a month you can help Royal Northern Sinfonia inspire and involve more people of all ages and backgrounds through their music. In return you can enjoy special events and experiences such as behind the scenes rehearsals and an annual season party with the players. In Harmony Rocks!
Seven year old Brody Flynn dreams of being a rock star. Thanks to the In Harmony programme Brody is mastering the violin and his focus and confidence is growing each day. Delivered by Sage Gateshead, In Harmony Newcastle Gateshead is a national programme, one of only six in England. School children in disadvantaged communities learn an orchestral instrument, play as part of a group or orchestra and have regular performance opportunities. The programme began at Hawthorn Primary School in the West End of Newcastle in 2012 and expanded into Bridgewater School in 2017. Brody Flynn attends Bridgewater School in Scotswood and started playing the violin when he was five years old. Now seven, Brody’s enjoyment of playing and interest in music has flourished. “I picked the violin because I liked listening to higher sounds. I felt really great when I got to play the violin because I got to learn a new instrument.” At home, Brody plays the guitar and drums as well as the violin. His mum Leanne said: “I felt happy when he first brought the violin home as it complements his interest in music at home and has now taught him theory which he can now use alongside this. His finger work with his guitar has also improved and I believe he’s transferred this skill from In Harmony.” Music has become part of day to day life at the school. As well as musical skills, confidence and

self-esteem, educational attainment and health and well-being are improved through learning and taking part in orchestral music-making. Leanne added: “Music helps with his focus and attention which are sometimes an issue otherwise in everyday life. It’s something at school which he feels really passionate about. He always comes home happy from In Harmony. When I first saw him perform I felt extremely proud, it was great to see him play with so much confidence on a real stage with an orchestra,” said Leanne. As his passion for music continues to develop, Leanne is looking forward to seeing how he progresses. She said: “Brody has a real love for music of all genres but particularly rock music. He dreams of one day becoming a rock star in a rock band. In Harmony has solidified his interest in music and we have no doubt that this will continue for years to come.” Brody said: “One day, I’d like to record my own songs and be in a band. Maybe become a rock star like Ozzy Osbourne!” We want to make sure music is open and inclusive to all and to support young people to reach their potential. As a charity, we rely on the generous support of the public to make that goal a reality. If you support In Harmony, or our bursary scheme, you’ll be supporting other children and young people like Brody to learn and grow as musicians. Every gift, no matter the size, helps us to deliver this important work. To donate, or to find out more, please contact inharmony@sagegateshead.com or visit our website.
