YOUNG MUSICIANS PROGRAMME 2018 /19 SEASON

Get the most out of your passion for music with our Young Musicians Programme. Aspiring young musicians aged 4-19 can develop skills, confidence and be inspired to fulfil their musical potential. Our Young Musicians Programme is open to all young people and bursaries are available to support those who want to study with us. Young musicians will access world class specialist training and tuition and a wide range of musical activities, instruments and styles. The Young Musicians Programme is for children and young people who are passionate about music and want to progress, including those who want to become professional musicians. Studies show that learning music improves confidence and self-esteem and former students have taken a wide range of career paths from apprenticeships to studying engineering, medicine and English. Students have also gone on to study music at some of the UK’s top universities and conservatoires.

PROGRAMMES FOUNDATION AND STEP UP STRINGS

YOUTH ENSEMBLES

Our Saturday morning programme provides an exciting and comprehensive approach to learning for the complete beginner. This includes instrumental lessons, playing in ensembles and musicianship classes. 4 year olds start with Musical Foundations and then progress through to Foundation Strings. Our Step Up programme provides orchestral opportunities for those aged 8 and over. A smaller string chamber orchestra called Stringendo runs alongside a full orchestra including wind and brass. We also offer opportunities for wind and brass players age 8 and upwards.

CENTRE FOR ADVANCED TRAINING (CAT) Age 8-18 Audition required Sage Gateshead’s Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) is a high-level music training programme for young people with exceptional potential and passion for music and is part of the Department of Education Music and Dance Scheme network. Taking place on Sunday during term time, students receive tuition, ensemble training and classes in music theory, alongside individual guidance and development. There are exciting opportunities to compose music and work alongside inspirational visiting artists, as well as multiple performance opportunities. The CAT is open to a wide range of musical genres and instruments including voice.

YOUNG SINFONIA Grade 7+ Working with outstanding conductors, including Mark Edwards, Karin Hendrickson and Holly Mathieson, Young Sinfonia are Sage Gateshead’s high-level youth orchestra with strong links to Royal Northern Sinfonia. Bringing together string, wind, brass and percussion players from the North East, Young Sinfonia play a broad range of music with high profile performances on Sage Gateshead’s main stages and across the region. QUAY VOICES Trained by outstanding choral conductors, including Music Director Matthew Beckingham, Quay Voices is widely regarded as one of the best youth choirs in the UK. In 2017/18 they worked with conductors Ben Palmer and Paul McCreesh, composer Euchar Gravina and performed alongside Royal Northern Sinfonia and Chorus.

FOLKESTRA

FOLKWORKS SATURDAYS

Directed by the incredible folk musician Ian Stephenson (Kan, Baltic Crossing), Folkestra have a national reputation as a unique and vibrant group of young folk musicians. They perform nationally and internationally and in 2017/18 toured the North East with Alastair Anderson’s Northlands, performed with the Northumbrian Ranters and Magnetic North at Sage Gateshead and recorded an album.

Led by musicians from Sage Gateshead’s successful and popular Folkworks Programme, Folkworks Saturdays is a fun and light-hearted youth folk ensemble for young people with experience and those wanting experience of folk and traditional music. Singers and instrumentalists are welcome.

JAMBONE Directed by renowned jazz pianist Paul Edis, Jambone provides experienced young players with amazing opportunities to work with influential musicians from the jazz world and perform at high profile events and venues, such as Amsterdam Bimhuis, London Jazz Festival and Gateshead International Jazz Festival.

Age 10-16 No audition required, recommended minimum playing standard is Grade 4.

JAZZ ATTACK Led by Paul Edis, Jazz Attack is a chance for young people to experience spontaneous music making and to be creative. Young musicians learn new ideas and approaches to improvisation, develop their ability to play by ear, gain invaluable ensemble skills and have good fun performing music from the jazz repertoire and beyond.


HOW TO APPLY AND BURSARIES Our Young Musicians Programme is open to all children and young people, whatever their circumstances. We are keen to encourage as many applicants as possible from the widest possible range of backgrounds and access a bursary where needed.
