SummerTyne Americana Festival is a must for all music fans, bringing together both established and new artists from America, the UK and beyond. This is one of the best Americana festivals with numerous ticketed gigs across our three halls over the weekend, as well as free indoor and outdoor stages, a music-filled river cruise, films, family activity and a food village.
What’s On?
Hollywood superstar turned singer-songwriter, Kiefer Sutherland, will close the weekend on Sunday 21 July with Americana rocker Jesse Dayton as special guest opener.
Come and get creative and complete a Discover Arts Award on Saturday 20 July. Arts Award is a nationally recognised qualification for children and young adults aged 5-25.
Kiefer has starred in The Lost Boys, A Few Good Men, and Stand by Me, as well as TV shows 24 and most recently Designated Survivor. His latest release, UK top 10 album, Reckless & Me, has country music at its heart, taking influence from Americana, folk, rock and blues.
Tamsin Austin, Director of Performance Programme at Sage Gateshead said: “We’re really proud that SummerTyne is such a long established festival in the Country/Americana music calendar and this is why we continue to attract serious heavyweights such as k.d. lang and The Long Ryders as well as a whole new generation of rising stars like Roosevelt Collier and The Wandering Hearts.
The opening night is headlined by the legendary k.d. lang, who celebrates the 25th anniversary of her platinum selling breakthrough album, Ingénue. Saturday night’s headline quadruple bill, Strictly Country, features The Wandering Hearts, who are at the forefront of the new British Americana scene; American Idol star Lauren Alaina, whose first album was hailed by critics; the Queen of roadhouse rock Eve Selis; and Northern Irish singer-songwriter Catherine McGrath, who is fast becoming one of the biggest stars in the UK country scene. The festival also sees a return to action for Americana stars The Long Ryders (who have recently released their first album in over 30 years), plus alt-country rock legends Cowboy Junkies, Kentucky old-time newcomers The Local Honeys, blues guitarist Alvin Youngblood Hart and New Zealand singer-songwriter Marlon Williams, recently seen alongside Bradley Cooper in Oscar-winning film A Star is Born.
“This year is a real mix of music from the very roots of Americana to the new wave of popular artists who are at the forefront of the ever-growing UK country scene. Kiefer Sutherland, Marlon Williams and Jesse Dayton all have great Americana chops but also bring strong links to film with them and a curiosity factor! And as ever we will deliver our two popular free stages outdoors and indoors showcasing the next generation of new talent. “Americana and Country music has such wide appeal, for aficionados of blues and roots to those who have discovered country music more recently through Spotify and who have fallen in love with its energy and feelgood, sing-a-long vibe! SummerTyne Americana is a great way to kick back and kick start the summer holidays with a buzzy jam-packed weekend of music!”

If you want to experience Beethoven like never before then join us for Big Beethoven Weekend 2: Dancing Beethoven on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May. On Saturday 9 May innovative string orchestra Scottish Ensemble, in collaboration with Swedish company Andersson Dance, present their criticallyacclaimed performance Prelude - skydiving from a dream, fusing classical musicians with dancers and blurring the lines between the two, with the musicians included in the choreography. The performance focuses on the raw energy of Beethoven’s
Grosse Fuge (considered by many to be his most inspiring work) as well as music by Lutosławski and Bach, and explores themes of chaos and complexity, breaking rules and embracing adventure whilst presenting the instrumentalists and dancers as equal partners on stage..
‘Appassionata’ - and illuminated them in new ways through clashes and encounters with the moving human body. Two astonishing performances in one weekend, making you hear and see Beethoven in a totally different way.
Sunday 10 May presents three dancers, three sonatas and one exceptional pianist - Per Tengstrand.

Sage Gateshead’s Turn Up the Quiet: Young Women’s Music-Making When thirteen-year-old Elena McHugh joined one of Sage Gateshead’s Turn Up the Quiet workshops she saw it as a hobby, and having completed the first few terms, Elena now wants to explore the career options within the music industry. Elena spoke to Sage Gateshead’s podcast presenter Ian Wylie and shared her experiences of coming along to Turn Up the Quiet - a series of free workshops, which have been designed for young women aged 13 - 18 who would like to learn new musical styles and develop ideas. Elena told Ian: “When I first found out about the course, I was like - ‘oh, a thing for people my age other girls - sounds cool - I’m in’. I love music a lot. I’ve never really considered it my thing, mostly because I’m really, really scared of performing - or at least I used to be. I have a lot of anxiety problems, especially social anxiety and performing and speaking in public, and I’ve found this programme has helped me a lot to conquer that. We’ve done two performances and both were a lot of fun.

“The course provides a really supportive environment - the people are all really nice. I’m more confident with my voice and with being able to make new friends. It’s nice to have something to look forward to. Every Thursday I’m like ‘yeah, it’s Music Day’. “When I started, I thought it was just a hobby but then I’ve enjoyed myself so much that I’m wondering if I can do anything with this. I’d like to see if I can take this in a career path direction.” Hannah Taylor, Programme Leader for Gender Equality, added to the chat: “It’s no secret that we’re in a male-dominated industry and it’s great for young girls to be themselves in an environment where they feel safe, gain the confidence they need, gain musical skills, raise their aspirations and hopefully feel like it may be something they want to continue with in the future.

“All abilities are welcome, anyone can take part. My advice is just turn up! We will welcome you into the group and hope you’ll leave feeling happier and inspired.” The workshops are open to singers and players of all musical styles and instruments. The next term starts in June with An Introduction to Music Technology and this course will offer an introduction to life behind the music desk and a taster into live sound and studio engineer career opportunities. The workshop series takes place on Tuesdays between 5-7pm and you don’t need to book - just turn up and meet opposite the Grab & Go Café on Sage Gateshead’s Concourse. The course will run for 6 weeks starting from 4 June. CoMusica works with partners across the North East to support children and young people experiencing challenging circumstances to fulfil their potential musically, personally and socially. The series is funded by National Foundation for Youth Music and Hays Travel.
