RNS 60@60

Audience Portrait Project

Royal Northern Sinfonia isn’t just our orchestra, it’s your orchestra. They don’t just play in Sage Gateshead, they play in your community centre, your church, your school, even your home!

For 60 years this outstanding bunch of musicians have been entertaining and inspiring a region (and beyond). Their reach transcends age, background, ability and gender. You only have to visit the new ‘RNS 60@60’ photography exhibition to see this.

Ed Murray, 80 of Newcastle, has been supporting RNS for their entire 60-year history and was at their very first concert in 1958. He has followed the orchestra ever since and attended his 200th RNS concert in 2018.

During Royal Northern Sinfonia’s 60th anniversary season, music lovers of all ages and walks of life have sat for their photograph to be taken by Newcastle-based photographer Michael Olatunji, whilst listening to their favourite piece of classical music.

“The versatility of the orchestra is fantastic and it’s great to see them turn their hand to something totally different,” he said.

Their portraits are now part of a display outside Sage One. The exhibition celebrates 60 members of the audience, their favourite music and their memories of Royal Northern Sinfonia.

10

Music at Sage Gateshead is now a family affair. His daughter Danielle sings with the Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia and his wife Carol is in the Silver Singers.

What’s On?

Sue Walker has been attending Royal Northern Sinfonia concerts since 1977, when she was 17. She said: “I guess I am a typical classical music lover: white, middle class, in my late 50s, but with one major exception - I am a transvestite.” One of her happiest memories is of an audience member telling her how fantastic she looked. “She was a complete stranger and, without any need to, simply came over and said probably the nicest thing that anyone has ever said to me,” Sue said.

Mario and Alicia Da Silva, aged seven and nine, and their mother Adjami first experienced RNS when the orchestra performed in Alicia’s school Hawthorn Primary, in Elswick. Hawthorn Primary is part of the inspiring In Harmony Newcastle Gateshead project, delivered by Sage Gateshead, which ensures every pupil has access to an orchestral instrument and ensemble. The orchestra makes regular visits to the school giving performances, workshops and masterclasses. The exhibition will run until the end of the 60th anniversary season in June.

“I think that sums up the RNS and its audience perfectly.”

What’s On?

Music: the international language Shahed Al-Rajab, aged 10 and a pupil at Carr Hill Primary School in Gateshead, was one of over 200 primary school children to attend a recent Royal Northern Sinfonia concert at Heworth Grange Academy. She has only been living in England since the end of September and doesn’t speak much English. But the concert helped her to relax and feel at ease. Speaking with support from a translator, Shahed said: “I loved listening to the playing of the different songs from the people in the orchestra.” “I liked listening to all the instruments especially the violins, flutes and the big harp. The music made me feel really happy, calm and relaxed.” Shahed is learning to play the violin in school with her new friends. She added: “I want to keep practising the violin, so I can play like the people in the orchestra. “When I play the violin, I feel warm and calm and just love the feeling that playing music gives. I felt the same when I was listening to the performance.”

12

RNS has always been actively involved in local communities and in education. As part of the orchestra’s 60th anniversary season, Sage Gateshead is appealing for contributions to help support this kind of social and community work carried out by the orchestra. The funds will enable them to take the very best in classical music to as wide an audience as possible. We’re half way to meeting the target of £60,000 but with still more to raise by the end of June, Sage Gateshead are looking for your help and donations. As an incentive, anyone who makes a donation of £60 or more (to celebrate the 60th anniversary) or signs up to a monthly direct debit of £19.58 (marking the year of 1958 when the orchestra was founded) is entered into a prize draw. The winner is given the opportunity for a quartet/ quintet to play in their living room or local community centre and the chance to chat to the musicians afterwards - a chamber ensemble in their chamber!

What’s On?

Most recently, Northumberland couple, Ken and Alison Carlisle, of Barrasford, won a personal performance from the RNS quartet following their donation to the appeal.

Rev. Sarah Lunn added: “It’s lovely to see the church full for something of a really good quality. The acoustics worked brilliantly. We hope they’ll come back.”

They decided to open up the prize to friends and family of the Tynedale community and held the recital in their nearby Church of St Giles in Chollerton.

All donations, no matter the size, truly do make a difference.

Ken Carlisle said: “We’ve always enjoyed being part of the Royal Northern Sinfonia family; supporting the orchestra since the early days and attending many concerts over the years and so it was a great surprise when we received the call to find out we’d won the prize draw. We love the orchestra, and so supporting them in their special anniversary year seemed only right.”

To donate, or for more information on how to support Royal Northern Sinfonia visit www.sagegateshead.com/rns60 or call Natalie Heath on 0191 443 5038. Thank you for your support.

What’s On?

Sister act The impact of social media, women in the workplace and mental health are tackled head on in Ward Thomas’ new album ‘Restless Minds’, the follow-up to 2016’s chart-topping Cartwheels.

Sage Gateshead has been a regular stop for the women, championing them at the start of their career. See Ward Thomas in Sage One on Saturday 6 April.

Making a welcome return to Sage Gateshead, the sisters bring their third album, which was written between Nashville, London and Hampshire (their home town) with a host of collaborators, including writers/producers behind Paloma Faith, Little Mix and Ed Sheeran. “As soon as we started writing the album, it became obvious what the themes would be,” says Catherine. “We were discussing current issues for us as twentysomethings, in a world that’s scary because it’s changing so quickly, but is also creating lots of exciting, new opportunities.” “We couldn’t help but address social media and the subconscious competition it creates,” says Lizzy. “There’s a fake reality that everyone our age is falling for right now. Scroll down, see my page, look at my perfect life!” The twins have been synonymous with the growth of country music in the UK, being the first British country act to ever hit No.1 in the UK album charts.

Postmodern Jukebox Announce Welcome to the Twenties 2.0 World Tour As we prepare to usher in 2020, Scott Bradlee and his famed time-twisting musical collective Postmodern Jukebox are preparing the world for a new decade - one that Postmodern Jukebox creator Scott Bradlee hopes will see a return to the style and craftsmanship that typified the music of past generations.

“Last time around the Twenties gave us Jazz, America’s one true art form. Who knows what is possible in the 2020s?” said Scott. “One thing that is for sure is that there are a lot of folks that are tired of the clickbait headlines, mindless reality TV, and smartphone addiction that has only served to divide people in the last decade. We’re using our small corner of the pop culture space to tell people to forget their troubles, and come join us for a night of celebrating true musical talent and timeless style - live and in real life.”

26

The Postmodern Jukebox take pop music back in time with their retro spin on modern pop hits. “When creating a touring version of the Postmodern Jukebox concept, we work on pairing the right talent with the right material and building a unique and amazing experience for Postmodern Jukebox fans,” Scott says. “Get ready for the most sensational ‘20s party this side of The Great Gatsby.”

sagegateshead.com

Started by Scott Bradlee in 2009, Postmodern Jukebox has gone on to amass over one billion YouTube views. For the past half-decade, PMJ has toured the world, playing hundreds of shows to sold-out houses on six continents. They’ve also performed on shows like ‘Good Morning America,’ topped iTunes and Billboard charts, and caught the attention of NPR Music, NBC News and a wide array of celebrity fans. Postmodern Jukebox will host their official Twenties 2.0 initiation performance party at Sage Gateshead on Sunday 3 March.

Sage Gateshead celebrates a Spring season of top acts and emerging artists from the jazz, soul and funk world. The Cinematic Orchestra, Ronnie Scott’s All Stars and The Comet is Coming are among the highlights for Spring 2019.

April 1 will see the first North East visit for Mercury Prize nominated, cosmic-psychedelic jazz trio The Comet is Coming. And in May the pioneering Gondwana records label (home to GoGo Penguin and Portico Quartet) celebrates 10 years with a special one-nighter featuring first visits by Mammal Hands, Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra, Noya Rayo and more. March 3 will see Trumpet player/composer Laura Jurd and guests the Ligeti Quartet, Dinosaur, Heida Mobeck and Anja Lauvdal in a celebration of new sounds. This dynamic 14-piece ensemble will be made up of world-class improvisers and contemporary music-makers from Norway and the UK. Also from Norway is spellbinding composer and tuba player Daniel Herskedal, appearing on March 23, promoting his third album Voyage on Edition Records. Following his recently released solo album, two-time Grammy-winning pianist and founding member of Snarky Puppy, Bill Laurance, will perform on April 6. The Cinematic Orchestra return to Sage One with their genre-defying fusion of jazz, classical and cutting-edge electronica to celebrate the release of their new album To Believe.

Ronnie Scott’s All Stars will perform their 60th Anniversary Concert. Direct from London’s worldfamous jazz club, combining world-class live jazz alongside rare archive photos and video footage, the band will take the audience on a guided, musical tour of what has now become a music institution. The season is part of a refreshed approach to programming jazz at Sage Gateshead, which will see a broader year-round programme and a new, fixed-date slot for the Gateshead International Jazz Festival. The annual festival will be relaunched on the third full weekend of March (20-22) in 2020 after taking a break next year. Tamsin Austin, Director of Performance Programme at Sage Gateshead, said: “We are very excited about entering a new era for jazz at Sage Gateshead. We are currently focusing on delivering a broader, yearround programme to grow our audiences. “We have a fantastic Spring season of performances from across a range of jazz/crossover genres and at the same time we are working hard on refreshing our annual festival so that we can strengthen the offer at Sage Gateshead for the long term.”

Arts Award Gold for Connor Connor Gribben, from South Shields, left school with a desire to succeed in his main passions - dance and art. He had few qualifications and was desperate to get into university. Then he heard about Arts Award.

His dance teacher told him that working towards Gold Arts Award would help him to build a portfolio, gather work experience and achieve enough UCAS points to go onto Higher Education. He started working towards his Award at The Customs House arts centre in South Shields before continuing at Sage Gateshead. During his time at these cultural venues he learnt about the operational side of running arts programmes as well having opportunities to put his creative skills to good use. He successfully completed and passed his Gold Award, which helped him to get onto a fine arts degree course at Northumbria University, which he is currently half way through. Connor is now 22 and teaching dance for The CustomSpace and Lawnmowers Theatre Company, as well as delivering breakdance events with cultural organisations for young people and competing in dance competitions across the country and beyond. This is as well as studying for his fine art degree!

Connor said: “Without Gold Arts Award and my advisor, I would not have been accepted into university. It really challenged me, made me be more creative but also organised. I had a lot of fun and learned so much doing the Gold Arts Award.” He has also branched out into music, taking a course at Sage Gateshead’s CoMusica Arches programme, where he and his friends made a rap album. The band has already performed at events and festivals in the North East. Paul Martin, Arts Award Programme Leader at Sage Gateshead, said: “The process of Arts Award has motivated and challenged Connor. It’s been instrumental in helping him progress in his career as an artist.”

Five minutes with... choir leader Kerry Green We caught up with our new singing tutor, Kerry Green, to find out more about Sage Gateshead’s new Contemporary Choir, a group for beginner and intermediate singers. Kerry tells us about her career as a singer, the benefits of group singing and what to expect in the group. Tell us a little bit about yourself I was a very shy child but always enjoyed singing - I loved music, especially making up harmonies. I would constantly listen to the radio and play my Dad’s record collection, this continued throughout my school years when I also started playing the flute and saxophone. I was 15 when I was first asked to record my vocals in a professional recording studio, then I was hooked! How would you describe Sage Gateshead Contemporary Choir? It’s a very friendly group with participants from all walks of life with a common love of singing. The choir is perfect for vocal and harmony development and sessions are delivered in a supportive and fun way. Members really encourage each other when learning their section parts or if auditioning for a solo, and we like to have a laugh! Who is it for? This is a mixed ability group for beginners to intermediates. Some people can read music, others not at all, and we learn pieces either by ear, music notation and/or vocal guide tracks; there’s no audition and no pressure!

30

What songs can people expect to sing? A real mixture of pieces ranging from contemporary pop, rock and soul to gospel/spiritual, folk, musical theatre and film music, and we may also explore some body percussion. Why is singing so good for you? The psychological and emotional benefits of singing are huge. It has a feel-good factor which helps de-stress and uplift and there are also social benefits like widening your social circle, strengthening communication and building confidence. If you could sing with any artists, who would you choose? Such a tricky question! There are so many artists I would pick but if I had to narrow it down, I’d say Prince, Randy Crawford, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald and, of course, Stevie Wonder! What would you say to anyone thinking about joining Sage Gateshead Contemporary Choir or thinking about singing for the first time? I’d love to see you, you will be made to feel very welcome and at ease and I can pretty much guarantee that when you leave you will feel much better than when you arrived. Sage Gateshead Contemporary Choir takes place on Thursday, 7-9pm and Summer Term starts from Thursday 2 May.

Removing barriers for young musicians Peter Qiang is 16 and has a hearing impairment. He moved to England from China a few years ago and was already a proficient piano player. He was shy and couldn’t speak much English and was keen to continue his musical development. Then he found out about Sage Gateshead’s Young Musicians Programme... ...the programme’s staff and tutors were really impressed with Peter and, knowing he had a little way to go before he would be comfortable in YMP’s Centre For Advanced Training (CAT), nurtured and encouraged him until he was ready to progress further. The CAT is a high-level music training programme for young people with a passion for music and exceptional potential.

the composers and the history of the piece. They’ve taught him about feeling the music and the emotion behind it.

Peter secured a place in the CAT in 2017 (one year on from joining YMP) learning piano with YMP tutor Oona Prendiville. His mum (Ofelia) has been amazed by how far he has come in such a short space of time.

Through YMP Peter has found out about national competitions and awards and has gone on to perform in London with ‘Future Talent’ at a concert hosted by Alexander Armstrong. He won the Worsley Award from Future Talent and the Alfred Gundry Piano Award from Award for Young Musicians.

Ofelia said: “Up until he joined YMP his tuition had been very technical. The tutors here have opened him up to a whole new way of learning. They talk about

“He’s had the opportunity to watch and learn from the finest musicians in a fantastic music environment. His performance and confidence have improved so much. It’s been an incredible journey for him.”

His ambition is to raise awareness of music for people who are hearing impaired and he hopes to hold a recital for this cause in the near future. Peter said: “Being part of YMP has broadened my horizons and has opened up so many opportunities. I have found peers that have the same interests and hobbies as me and everyone is treated equally in the world of music. It’s a great environment. “Since I joined it has been my dream to play in Sage Gateshead’s main concert halls and I was able to do this

at the YMP Winter Festival in December.” Peter is also now learning the cello and composition and is excited about creating his own music.

Gateshead, said: “We are very proud of what Peter has achieved and hope his story will inspire other young people to study music with us.

Sage Gateshead’s Young Musicians Programme includes opportunities for young singers and instrumentalists, from choirs, bands and ensembles to formal tuition and training. It is open to musicians of all ages and backgrounds and there are bursaries available. Many students don’t pay any fees at all.

“We are here to remove barriers and challenges for young musicians. YMP is open to everybody, whatever their personal circumstances. Young musicians at Sage Gateshead come from lots of different backgrounds and play a huge range of musical styles so come along and meet us. We would love to welcome you and help you to reach your musical potential.”
