At the time of going to print, we’re all gearing up for Christmas here at Sage Gateshead. But, with the long march to Spring just around the corner, complete with dark nights, wet afternoons and frosty mornings, we’re pleased to report that we’ve got something to help everyone get through what is generally regarded as the toughest time of year. On page 4, we meet Kumaran Coopamootoo, whose story might just inspire the dormant musician in you to make music your New Year’s resolution. Having started taking guitar classes as part of our Absolute Beginner Group at the start of the year, he’s never looked back. Just think - come January, you could be starting your own musical journey of discovery with Sage Gateshead. With so many classes to choose from, you’re bound to find something that takes your fancy. Of course, we’re very excited about our fourth New Year New Artists Festival, taking place January 17 - 20. New Year New Artists is one of our favourite annual moments, distilling as it does the very essence of everything Sage Gateshead holds dear; showcasing great live music to audiences and supporting artists to grow and develop. This year features some top artists, including the wonderful Jess Gillam, who wowed everyone at the BBC Proms. With day tickets setting you back just £13.50,

New Year New Artists is the perfect foil to enforced post-Christmas hibernation. January sees the launch of our exciting new Spring Jazz season too. A whole bunch of top acts and emerging artists are coming your way - including The Comet is Coming and Daniel Herskedal. Check out the full line up on page 15. We’ve got lots more to get you through the post-Christmas trudge, too - just take a look! With best wishes, the team at Sage Gateshead P.S - We’re making great progress on our RNS 60 fundraising campaign as part of the orchestra’s 60th birthday year. Every penny counts though, so please do consider getting involved. To find out how (and why it’s so important), take a look on page 23.

Make Music Your New Year’s Resolution Every New Year’s Day we set ourselves a new goal and often we chose something that turns out to be unrealistic. So, this year, let’s make a resolution that is actually doable with a little effort. Join us and resolve to get musical in 2019! We will help you to reach your potential, inspire you, and give you the confidence to experiment and try out new ideas. Most of all, we guarantee it’ll be fun and you’ll make some great friends. It’s never too late to get into music and it’s not as daunting as it sounds. Kumaran Coopamootoo, 25, joined Sage Gateshead’s Absolute Beginner Guitar class in January 2018. “I was taking guitar classes a few years ago at a conservatory of music. I definitely learnt some invaluable guitar theory, however, the structure was not really adapted to help a beginner to learn to play. Eventually, I stopped and left my guitar behind when I moved to Newcastle. I wanted to start again but I didn’t really know where to pick up. At the beginning of this year, my sister enrolled on the Absolute Beginner course as she also wanted to learn some guitar. So, I thought that I’d tag along too. I bought myself a brand new acoustic guitar and joined the class. The elements covered were spot on: from the way to sit, how to hold the instrument and the plectrum, tips on how to form chords, position the fingers on the guitar neck, simple exercises for timing and speed - each objective was meticulously crafted as a series of steps by the teacher.

4

So, it was easy to identify where more attention was required in our practice and how to build a strong foundation to play. This gave me the confidence and the means to learn other songs by myself. It has really been a nice experience and I look forward to moving up to the next stages.” Sage Gateshead run over 100 different music classes each week, from absolute beginners to advanced, early years through to people over the age of 50. Come and learn to play guitar, ukulele, percussion or brass and wind instruments, or maybe you’d prefer to play in a band - there’s also a huge range of singing groups, not to mention our dedicated folk programme. With so much to choose from there’s bound to be something that’s just right for your musical resolution. Spring Term starts from Monday 14 January. John Grant John Grant last graced the stage of Sage One in 2016 with his trademark candour, authenticity and lyrical brilliance. His return to Sage Gateshead in 2019 follows the release of his eloquent and astonishing new album Love Is Magic, the latest instalment in Grant’s astonishing story. “Each record I make is more of an amalgamation of who I am,” says John Grant. “The more I do this, the more I trust myself, and the closer I get to making what I imagine in my head.” Even when the Michigan-born man released his debut solo album Queen of Denmark in 2010, John laced sumptuous soft-rock ballads with an array of spacey and wistful synthesizer sounds. Now, with his fourth solo album Love Is Magic, Grant continues to evolve, creating his most electronic record yet, in collaboration with Benge (Ben Edwards), analogue synth expert/collector and a member of electronic trio Wrangler, John’s collaborators earlier this year under the collective name of Creep Show on the album Mr Dynamite. Besides the quest for sound, “the lyrics, of course, continue to be very important to me,” says John. “They’re just snapshots of everyday life where myriad moods and every sort of horrible and

12

hilarious occurrence one can imagine mix with the pedestrian resulting in the absurdity and beauty of life.” Anyone familiar with John’s story will recognise his battles - with addiction and health, with trusting love and relationships. From this turbulence he’s forged another riveting collection of often brutal diatribes and confessionals, where humour, fear, anxiety and anger overlap as John, with trademark candour, figuratively exposes the machinations of his saturated brain. His return to Sage Gateshead promises to deliver a night that’s as magical and as astounding as ever.

Have the time of your life at Sage Gateshead! Full of passion and romance, heart-pounding music and sensational dancing, the classic story of Dirty Dancing is hitting the road again by popular demand, including a week-long run at Sage Gateshead from 19-25 January 2019.

Featuring the hit songs ‘Hungry Eyes’, ‘Hey! Baby’, ‘Do You Love Me?’ and the heart-stopping ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’, this smash hit tells the classic story of Baby and Johnny, two fiercely independent young spirits from different worlds, who come together in what will be the most challenging and triumphant summer of their lives. This new tour follows the 2016/17 tour, which played to sold out audiences over a 12-month period and took over £13 million in ticket sales, 3 blockbuster West End runs, multiple sell out UK tours and numerous international productions. Michael O’Reiily who plays Johnny Castle is excited to make his debut as Johnny: “Once you get over the fact that it’s quite a daunting role to take on because it’s so well-known, it’s just really exciting. Everyone is so familiar with the show and they’re so familiar with the characters that you’re just excited to do it justice, you’re ready to put in the work and bring it to life.”

14

Kira Malou who Plays Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman added to the excitement of taking the show on tour: “I love connecting with different audiences in different venues. We get excited moving around the country so we’re buzzing on stage and the audience feeds off that.” Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story On Stage originally opened at London’s Aldwych Theatre in 2006 with a record-breaking advance of £15 million, making it the fastest ever selling show in West End theatre history. The production became the longest running show in the history of the Aldwych Theatre and played to over 2 million people during its triumphant 5-year run. See Dirty Dancing The Classic Story On Stage from Saturday 19 to Friday 25 January 2019. Tickets are available from www.sagegateshead.com or by calling Sage Gateshead on 0191 443 4661.

What’s On?

John Grant, KT Tunstall, Lars Vogt. Big names in the world of music. They all started somewhere. What if that somewhere was here, at Sage Gateshead? And what if you got to see them first? We pride ourselves on attracting the very finest musicians (the above artists all perform here this season). But what excites us the most is nurturing the finest, emerging artists, on their journey upwards. It is a big part of what we do here and it’s really important to us. And we love that you get to see and hear it too. In January we host our fourth New Year New Artists Festival – showcasing rising stars of the future. It brings together the UK’s most exciting contemporary musicians from folk, classical, jazz and world music and runs from January 17 to 20. Jess Gillam, the young saxophonist who moved audiences at this year’s BBC Proms, joins Royal Northern Sinfonia and conductor Jessica Cottis in Sage One for a colourful concert of Debussy, Stravinsky, Milhaud and Villa Lobos on the Friday evening. We are also showcasing young artists selected by Europe’s leading concert halls at our Saturday afternoon gala of rising stars. This time round we are proud to announce that musicians from our recent Summer Studio will be part of the NYNA line-up. They took up free residencies at Sage Gateshead and were given time, space and help from industry experts to create new work, develop their practice or prepare for a performance.

Holly Clarke is a traditional singer who came through our Folkworks Summer School and is set to take the folk world by storm. After reaching the semi-finals of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award in 2016 she used Summer Studio to focus on creating her new solo project. Holly said: “As a traditional singer and musician, having this platform to perform is so important. Sage Gateshead has been a big part of my education in folk music, so it’s special to be a part of this and working closer with them.” Sam Partridge has tutored at our School, he and Grace Smith spent summer unearthing old tunes from material and composing new work, primarily English concertina and

Summer the archive using fiddle.

Katie Doherty and The Navigators were brought together during the Summer Studio residency last year. A spark went off and now they are touring and releasing their first album at the concert in January. Jazz group purpleshirt impressed with their electric live show at Summer Studio and join the festival line up, along with Peter Moore, Heisk, Kaviraj Singh, Vels Trio and more. RNS Chamber in your Chamber One lucky Sunderland couple have recently welcomed members of Royal Northern Sinfonia to their home for a cosy performance. Four musicians from the orchestra performed an intimate recital to David and Elaine Hannington and their family and friends who gathered in their living room, dining room and hallway, after they won a competition following a charitable donation they made to Royal Northern Sinfonia’s 60th Anniversary Appeal. David Hannington said: “It was a wonderful, magical experience to hear such beautiful music close up in our own home. It was truly unforgettable, and I can honestly say it will be a life-long memory.” The couple have been attending Royal Northern Sinfonia concerts for the past 40 years. “There is a real family feeling to their concerts and, even though we had never met any of the players who performed at our house, we felt as though we knew them,” he added. As part of the orchestra’s 60th birthday, Sage Gateshead is appealing for contributions to help support the social and community work carried out by the orchestra, enabling them to take the very best in classical music to as wide an audience as possible.

With a target of £60,000 to be met by the end of the 18/19 classical season, the appeal is for donations to either mark the year the orchestra was founded with a monthly direct debit of £19.58 or a donation of £60 to help celebrate the 60th anniversary. As an incentive, anyone who donates £60 or more to the appeal is entered into a prize draw. The winner is given the opportunity for a quartet/quintet to play in their living room or local community centre and the chance to chat to the musicians afterwards.

Classics 4 Kids There are many ways of introducing children to the world of music; from the introduction of the recorder in school assembly, playing drums in the bedroom or singing along to a favourite musical film.

Last month, children of all ages learnt about classical music with members of Royal Northern Sinfonia whilst partying here at Sage Gateshead. The event was part of the orchestra’s 60th birthday celebrations and was the first in the 18/19 classical season’s Classics 4 Kids series. Classics 4 Kids is a family-friendly introduction to classical music and is programmed to reflect some of the same music which is played in a concert the night before, but in a way that appeals to a young audience.

24

Either side of a Classics 4 Kids concert there are planned activities linked to the theme of the concert, such as treasure hunts around the building, musical games, classical discos, music-themed crafts and the opportunity for children to have a try at playing an orchestral instrument. There are often performances from Young Sinfonia or In Harmony Newcastle Gateshead on the Concourse. Not only are events like this at Sage Gateshead incredibly fun, but they can be of huge benefit to a child’s development.

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Arts, Health and Wellbeing Inquiry Report 2017, recognises the educational benefits of music and the arts, stating that “The early years are crucial to fostering the cognitive and socio-emotional skills that serve children well later in life, and the arts can have a central role in aiding these developmental processes”.

Royal Northern Sinfonia and Sage Gateshead work to inspire and involve people of all ages and backgrounds through various programme offers; from our Baby Sinfonia chamber music concerts to our under 5s music-making, after classes, and concerts for school groups through to our music classes for adults. There’s something for everyone.

Our next Classics 4 Kids event takes place on Saturday 2 February and focuses on Vaughan Williams’ muchloved The Lark Ascending, as well as taking inspiration from other bird related compositions which will be performed by Royal Northern Sinfonia, led by Bradley Creswick. The event will be presented by Tim Steiner, a composer and conductor who has devised and presented dozens of interactive family and schools concerts throughout the UK.

Previous Classics 4 Kids participants: “A real opportunity for me and the kids to experience the orchestra. We have been to The Snowman but this was something different and we loved it!” “Loved it. It feels like a door has opened for me and the children into classical music.” “Amazing experience - booked for the next one already!”

What’s On?

Royal Northern Sinfonia is celebrating its 60th anniversary. It’s your orchestra in the north. Still not heard them yet? Well now’s your chance. Perhaps it’s the ‘classical’ tag that’s putting you off? Well our RNS performs music from James Bond and West End Shows, with the likes of Maxïmo Park and Debbie Harry, and along to popular movies such as Home Alone and The Snowman. Too expensive? If you live in Gateshead you can come and see your first RNS at Home concert for free! If you are under 30 or unemployed it’s just a fiver for many of our concerts. Caring for young children? Bring them with you! We run regular Baby Sinfonia chamber concerts, short Classics4Kids concerts for families and our seasonal Snowman screening is always a festive hit. All of these events encourage interaction and are relaxed in atmosphere. Can’t get here? Last season half of Royal Northern Sinfonia’s performances were outside this building and across the North of England - in care homes, churches, hospitals, community centres, libraries, schools, shopping centres and food markets. This season you can even win a chance for them to come and play in your home! And over the past 12 months we have broadcast or streamed to two million people.

The orchestra’s work is as diverse as ever and they work with as wide a range of people as possible including amateurs, emerging composers, young musicians in challenging circumstances and school children. And when they are not entertaining over here they are flying the flag for the North of England across the world. Last season they toured to nine different countries, giving 25 performances. But don’t just take our word for it. Currently on display outside our main concert hall - Sage One is a photographic display of what will eventually be 60 audience members listening to their favourite piece of music, each with a story to tell about their connection to Royal Northern Sinfonia. So if you make one New Year’s resolution in 2019, celebrate with us and make your own connection with Royal Northern Sinfonia. You won’t regret it.

From young musician to awardwinning composer Newcastle-born composer Anna Appleby, 25, has written for everyone from primary school children and amateur choirs to opera singers and world-leading orchestras including Royal Northern Sinfonia, and her music has been showcased abroad and on BBC Radio 3. Her journey began here at Sage Gateshead when she joined the Young Musicians Programme. We caught up with her to find out how the programme helped shape her future career as an award-winning composer. Anna was 15 when she joined Young Sinfonia, Sage Gateshead’s youth orchestra. “I’d heard that the Young Musicians Programme was excellent and I was starting to take the oboe seriously. I was quite nervous at first as I thought I wasn’t good enough for it, but I auditioned anyway and was delighted to be accepted!” Young Sinfonia is part of Sage Gateshead’s Young Musicians Programme for aspiring young musicians aged 4-19 who are passionate about music and want to progress, including, but not limited to, those who want to become professional musicians.

What’s On?

“It changed my life - I’d never been in a serious/ professional musical context before, except for going to concerts and playing in school ensembles, and I suddenly realised just how much there was to learn about classical music and that it was all accessible to me. I also made lots of friends who made me feel accepted and confident and like I belonged there.” After a year on the programme, Anna became principal oboist and travelled to Sweden and Milan to perform with Young Sinfonia. “I will never forget how emotional I was when I realised I would be performing on stage at Sage Gateshead, let alone on stages abroad and as a principal oboist! Those first concerts made me start taking music more seriously and gave me confidence as a performer.” Anna went on to study for a Masters in Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester after completing a music degree at Oxford University. Since then, Anna has racked up multiple awards, most recently, she is the recipient of the GDST Trailblazer Award 2018; awarded for her career as a composer so far. Anna has been the Music Fellow with Rambert Dance Company (2016/17) and a member of the ‘Composers’ Hub’ with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (2017/18).

She has also worked extensively with community music groups, including Streetwise Opera, where she composed music for their recent opera Tell Me The Truth About Love, which premiered at Sage Gateshead. In 2016 Anna returned to her roots as artist in residence with Quay Voices, Sage Gateshead’s youth choir, with whom she worked collaboratively to create a two-movement piece involving lyrics written by the choir. “I think I might not have become a composer if it hadn’t been for Young Sinfonia - I remember deciding on my way home from the residential course in Sweden that I had to do music for the rest of my life. I wrote my very first classical compositions for musicians I met through Young Sinfonia.” The Young Musicians Programme is open to all young people, and we are keen to encourage as many applicants from the widest possible range of backgrounds and circumstances. A large number of bursaries and grants are available to support those who want to study with us. Enrolment for 2019/20 opens in February 2019. Please visit sagegateshead.com/ymp for more details. We want to make sure music is open and inclusive to all and to support young people to reach their potential. As a charity, we rely on the generous support of the public to make that goal a reality. Every gift, no matter the size, can make a difference. To find out how you can help or to donate, please visit our website or get in touch.

Q&A with Nicola Tempest - Hall Nicola Tempest-Hall is a Wealth Management Professional and the Partner in the North East for Equality Wealth - the LGBT Specialist. She is also a talented brass musician and tutor at Seaham Music Academy

What are your early musical memories and influences? Being encouraged to have a go and learn how to read music. Primary school teachers were key early on, later it was Rupert Hanson who really gave me musical opportunity. When did you start learning to play and which instruments? I started with a plastic recorder at school along with the violin. Following a demonstration by a local trombone player and a conversation with the drummer in a local brass band I then went on to learn cornet and trombone playing in brass bands and orchestras. I currently chair Trimdon Brass and am a soprano cornet player. Tell us more about Seaham Music Academy. Established in 1992 the Academy has grown from strength to strength. Currently there are over 170 members enjoying the opportunity to learn a wide variety of instruments. We cater for all ages and abilities having a class for people as young as 3! When and where can we see you live on stage next?

Apart from Christmas carols with Trimdon Brass we will be at the Gala Theatre next March competing in the North of England Brass Band Championships. How does your passion for music help you in your professional life? - and tell us a bit more about your role as President of BNI Network please Professionally I love to build long term relationships and it is surprising how many times music becomes central to conversations with clients- highlighting a common interest. No matter what the genre I believe music makes friends, inspires people and plays a large part in many people’s day to day lives. As President of BNI Baltic I run a weekly meeting with local businesses helping to build trusted relationships and generate business opportunities . In turn this has a wider positive effect on the local economy. Finally please tell us more about Equality Wealth and your role I am a wealth management adviser and Partner with Equality Wealth which is the first

International specialist to provide access to tailored solutions for the LGBT community. Recognising that many members of the LGBT community may not have financial advisers who truly understand their needs I am specifically trained in LGBT-related issues. The LGBT lifecycle can be quite different; issues like succession planning or saving for retirement may often be overlooked and, with a generally higher disposable income, there is real need for quality advice that really helps LGBT individuals achieve their financial goals and aspirations. We also understand that, only through creating a safe and confidential environment can client and adviser build a positive rapport based on mutual trust and respect. This individual, sensitive approach to client relationships is regularly applied to the broader market too and I’m pleased to say that professional people from all walks of life are equally at ease discussing and receiving solutions bespoke to their circumstances.

Specialist financial advice for the LGBT Community from Partner advisers • Retirement Planning • Non-traditional Succession planning
