Welcome Great gigs ................................................................................................. 4 New Year’s Eve ..................................................................................... 16 Classical .................................................................................................. 22 Festive fun for all the family ......................................................... 30
Phew! After a jam-packed Summer, filled with Great Exhibition of the North fun, we’re all hunkering down and getting ready for Winter here at Sage Gateshead. However, far from going into hibernation, we’re gearing up for our busiest few months of the year. And what a fab few months we have in store for you! We’ve got something for everyone. We’re particularly excited by our new Christmas experience for families, Santa’s Enchanted Musical Forest, which promises to marry the tradition of Christmas with the magic of music. Of course, a real highlight will be The Divine Comedy playing us into 2019 with what’s sure to be a NYE to remember. Get your tickets quickly, before they all get snapped up.
Our Music Education Centre is now back to its busiest best, with the Autumn Term learners joining their classes and workshops. Although term has started, there are still a few places left for anyone who wants to learn a new instrument, improve their skills or make new friends. You can also sign up for next term and make your new year resolution to learn music in advance! Check out our website or get in touch to find out more.
For RNS, the next few months are a busy period too. Following their spectacular season launch and 60th birthday celebration back in September, the UK’s finest Chamber Orchestra is looking forward to playing the rest of the season, both in Sage Gateshead and in a town near you soon as part of their Baroque Christmas by Candlelight Tour. If you’ve never experienced the orchestra before, the Baroque tour is an ideal opportunity to hear them in the truly magical candlelit atmosphere of your local church this festive season.
Have a great few months, and see you at Sage Gateshead soon.
DON’T FORGET! Throughout their 2018/19 season, RNS will be raising money as part of their 60th birthday appeal. There are lots of ways to get involved, and you can even win a ‘chamber in your chamber’ if you’d like to have some of the finest musicians in the land play in your living room (or dining room… or anywhere else in your home for that matter.) Check out our website to learn more about how you can help support your orchestra this year!

What’s On?
Meet Elisabeth Leonskaja Child prodigy, pupil and friend of the great Sviatoslav Richter, and one of the most celebrated pianists in the world today, the legendary Elisabeth Leonskaja chats to What’s On ahead of her recital at Sage Gateshead as part of our Piano Greats series in November. The programme you are playing for us is beautifully crafted. What inspired you to create it in this way? I really enjoy performing this programme. When I first played and studied music by the three most important composers of the Second Viennese School - Berg, Webern and Schoenberg - I realised that working on these scores helped me to hear music by Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and other major classical composers in a totally new way. That’s what first gave me the idea of combining their works into one programme. You have had a long and distinguished career playing Schubert. What does Schubert mean to you as a composer? There are so many different aspects to Schubert. Every one of his directions in the score is crucially important - he gives such detailed dynamic shading. It is hard to categorise Schubert’s music - it has its own romanticism, yet it is written in a strict classical style. You can trace the evolution of the piano sonata through his works, from the early Haydnesque pieces, to later ones where you can hear his adoration for Beethoven, then eventually huge works of Brucknerian dimensions. His late sonatas cannot be compared to anyone else, and require great emotional tension and concentration. What are your musical inspirations and influences? I always pay attention to every tiny detail in the score, and find this gives me great inspiration. I listen all the time, and have a mind open to new ideas. If I hear something that impresses me I can use it in my work.
You have such a distinguished background in Russian pianism. How does that influence your interpretation of the kind of non-Russian repertoire we will hear in your recital? The Russian Piano School is famous with good reason. Total technical mastery of the instrument is a given. The task is then to interpret the music of the great masters! How do you feel that British audiences respond to your music-making as opposed to audiences elsewhere? I have played my music all over the world, and yes the audiences are very different. I have enormous respect for everyone that comes to my concerts - that is the most important thing! What does it take to be a Piano Great? Every concert I give, and every programme I play, I give it all my energy and musicianship. It is a great responsibility to share this wonderful music. Making Christmas memories with little ones Christmas with young children is so special, and we have lots of ways to help you make those festive memories extra special. Families with younger children will love Santa’s Enchanted Musical Forest, taking place throughout December. This brand new Sage Gateshead experience is the perfect opportunity for little ones to come and meet Santa and tell him exactly what’s on their wish list as he joins us around the campfire to make music with our Christmas folk band - all in a magical winter forest setting. (Various dates in December – 11am, 11:45am, 12:30pm, 1:15pm, 2pm, 2:45pm). Our annual showing of The Snowman isn’t just a tradition for thousands of families. It’s also a brilliant way of introducing children to the wonderful world of classical music. After all, this isn’t just any film screening; it’s a screening with a live score played by RNS, the UK’s finest
chamber orchestra. If you’ve not yet made the Snowman a December highlight, please do come along. Make sure you wrap up warm, though – we’ll be taking you on a musical Bear Hunt before The Snowman takes flight. (Sat 22- Dec 2pm and 5pm, Sun- 23 Dec 11am, 2pm, 5pm, Mon- 24 Dec 11am, 2pm). With so much emphasis placed on the lead up to the big day, the period after Christmas can feel a bit flat. But, for those looking to squeeze every last ounce of joy from festive family time, our Big Family Festive Fun! event on Friday 28 December is just the ticket. Children will be led by specialist musicians in a joyful jumble of seasonal singing, playing and dancing.
Bringing the magic to life with older children Anyone with slightly older children will be pleased to hear that we have lots of ways for you to bring the magic alive, too. For the film fans amongst you, we’re sure that Home Alone is a household institution. But instead of watching it at home, why not watch it live in concert with RNS? Not only a great way of seeing a festive favourite, but the perfect opportunity to spark a love of orchestral music in your children. (Sunday 25 November, 3pm and 7.30pm.) For those who enjoy a good old pantomime (and who doesn’t?) we have a real treat in The Demon Barbers: The Lock-In Christmas Carol. This 5* evening is part-gig, part-dance and part-panto! It’s folk and it’s hip-hop! What’s more, it’s
hilarious to boot. An absolute riot in fact. Ideal for older children and for tearing the young people in your life away from their screens! (Thursday 20 December, 8pm). Created for children between the ages of 7 and 11, Scratch Festive Family Band is perfect for the child that shows an interest in music making - and anyone who loves a good old party too. Over the course of the session, children will get chance to jam with two of our professional musicians, whilst learning a festive song in the process. With ukuleles, drums, dancing and more, this is a perfect way to create fun festive moments in the lead up to Christmas. (Saturday 22 December, 10am and 11:30am.)

Hannah is ‘In Harmony’ Delivered by Sage Gateshead, In Harmony Newcastle Gateshead is one of six projects in England that gives school children in deprived communities the opportunity to learn an orchestral instrument, play as part of a group or orchestra and have regular performance opportunities. Here, we talk to Hannah Johnson, 15, about the impact the project has had on her. Hannah’s journey started in 2012, back when she was nine years old. She chose to learn the Oboe at Hawthorn Primary School in Elswick, an In Harmony school. “I liked the sound of it… before I started, I didn’t know how to read music, or what notes were,” she said. Since these early first steps, Hannah has become a confident musician, made new friends and is considering a career in music, as she explains: “In Harmony has helped me grow in confidence as I never would have got up on a stage before. Being with In Harmony has given me the chance to meet students from other schools and perform at Sage Gateshead.” After a year of playing, Hannah gained the opportunity to study at Sage Gateshead’s Centre for Advanced Training (part of the
32
Young Musicians Programme) where she continues to attend, with the support of a bursary. She said: “I jumped at the chance to do this. I got to have 1-1 sessions and practice as a group.” Hannah’s dad Barry credits the bursary scheme with allowing Hannah’s musical aspiration to flourish, saying: “Without the bursary nothing would have happened. We wouldn’t have been able to afford it.” Hannah’s passion for music has rubbed off on her brother Connor, who is learning the violin as part of the In Harmony project. Barry said: “We often hear Hannah and Connor practice together and it always brings a smile to our faces. We hope that Connor can follow in Hannah’s footsteps.
sagegateshead.com
Hannah is now going into Year 11 at Excelsior Academy, and also plays with the West Newcastle Symphony Orchestra, a community orchestra that grew out of In Harmony. As she explains, a career in music is a definite option. “I am now working towards my grade 5 exam and my aim is to reach grade 8 by the time I’m 18. I would like to give other students the chance to learn all the skills that I’ve learned with In Harmony by maybe becoming a tutor myself,” she said. You can come and watch Hannah perform at the Young Musician’s Programme Winter Festival at Sage Gateshead on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 December and with the West Newcastle Symphony Orchestra on Friday 7 December, 6pm at the Lit & Phil. The Future is
2018 marks a milestone birthday for RNS, which turned 60 in September. But did you know that Folkworks, which along with RNS is a Sage Gateshead founding partner, is also celebrating? For 30 years now, Folkworks has been enabling people of all ages to celebrate and participate in traditional music, song and dance. As Folkworks turns 30, we look back at the high points, and ask; what’s next?
Founded in 1988 by Ros Rigby OBE and Alistair Anderson, Folkworks’ early achievements lay in placing folk and traditional music centre-stage in the concert halls of the world, alongside classical, rock and world music, often bringing together musicians from different but complementary backgrounds. This grew from a programme that included the promotion of regional and national tours, international collaborations and festivals. This strong tradition of presenting live works continues to this day at Sage Gateshead, as evidenced by our packed year round folk programme. In the coming months alone, we welcome Karine Polwart, Daoiri Farrell, Bruce Molsky and The Demon Barbers to name but a few, and a significant chunk of our Great Exhibition of the North work over the summer was folk focussed.
34
sagegateshead.com
But Folkworks is, and always has been, about so much more than what’s on stage. Learning and the perpetuation of folk tradition lies at the heart of Folkworks, and includes Folkworks Tuesdays, a programme of classes that encourages easy access folk music. Of course, our work also includes our flagship summer schools, which have inspired thousands of young musicians over the years. Our summer schools boast world class tuition and an impressive alumnus, including Nancy Kerr, Rob Harbron, Rachel and Becky Unthank. So, what’s next for Folkworks? As Amy Leach, Folkworks Producer at Sage Gateshead explains, the future is undoubtedly the next generation. “Sage Gateshead is very passionate about passing Folkworks traditions on to children and young people,”
What’s On?
says Amy. “In addition to our brilliant summer schools, we have Folkworks Saturdays, a fun and light-hearted youth folk ensemble, and Folkestra, a folk band that welcomes some of the best young folk players from across the North East. The energy that children and young people bring is fantastic, and it’s amazing to witness participants’ confidence grow.” Giving as many young people as possible the chance to join in is key too, and as with everything here at Sage Gateshead, we work hard to make Folkworks as accessible to as many people as possible. Amy explains: “Each year we raise money to support young people from all backgrounds to access the Folkworks Programme. For example, we offer a bursary scheme for Folkworks Summer Schools, which
provide subsidised places for young people to attend. We absolutely couldn’t reach and inspire the range and number of young people that we do without the generous support of the public.” So then, the future is children and young people; the future is folk! If you want to help more children and young people take part in our Folkworks Programme, inspiring the next generation of folkies in doing so, donate today. Even a small gift can help us build our bursary fund, ensuring that the future of folk music is open and accessible to all.

More than Meets the Eye Funding Success and Royal Seal of Approval for CoMusica
There’s a lot more to Sage Gateshead than meets the eye. Did you know that more than 1,500 young people in challenging circumstances get to DJ, sing, song-write, play in a band, do spray art, rap, beatbox and work towards qualifications at the same time? It’s called our CoMusica Inclusion programme. And, thanks to funds recently awarded by the National Foundation for Youth Music and Hays Travel Foundation, we can continue this vital strand of our work for another four years. As one of 13 partners which form the Alliance for a Musically Inclusive England, a movement working to promote diversity and cultural democracy in music education, we will use the money to improve the musical skills, confidence and aspirations of young people aged between 0 and 25. This includes those who are not in education, employment or training or who have special educational needs and/or disabilities.

What’s On?
Why is this work so important? Because every child and young person should have the chance to make music, and CoMusica supports children and young people to fulfil their potential musically, personally and socially. CoMusica also works with partners to support and train individuals and organisations in the North East to use music and the arts as a way of engaging with young people. At just 19 and primary carer to her five siblings, Susan (not her real name) says the Arches, one of our CoMusica projects, is a place she can come to and be herself. She says: “If it wasn’t for the Arches programme, I don’t know where I would have ended up. It helped me gain so much confidence and it’s made me feel as if I can be myself around others now.” As well as developing her skills as an MC and DJ, Susan has also gained qualifications in literacy, personal and social development and music technology.
The programme has even been given the Royal seal of approval by the Duke of Cambridge, with CoMusica being one of the highlights of his recent visit to NewcastleGateshead. Prince William took time to sit and chat to young people involved in the CoMusica programme, discussing the impact creative work has had on developing their key skills. Many of them described how CoMusica had changed their lives by focusing on their love of music to help with things they struggled with at school. Whilst funding from organisations like Youth Music and Hays Travel Foundation, as well as support from other partners like The Shears Foundation, will help this work continue in the short term, as a charity we rely on continued support to ensure everyone in the community can experience the joy and life changing impact of music. Every gift, no matter the size, can make a difference here. To find out how you can help or to donate, please visit our website or get in touch.
