LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. Dear Neville What terrible news it was to hear of Tiger Woods’ car accident. So sad to see one of the games all-time greats in hospital with potentially career ending leg injuries. However, two other sides of this story amaze me. The first is how many people immediately assumed that he must have been under the influence of something, the second is how some sick idiots (this is a nice way of saying it) said that this was some sort of “payback” for the fact that he supported Donald Trump. I must say that I also felt that the players reaction was a little over the top. Wearing Tiger red and black on the last day at the Workday Championship at The Concession seemed a little macabre to me. His life is not in danger and this sort of reaction only adds to the hype that fuels my two points above.

Dear Tony Thank you for your letter. People are always looking for drama (TV soapies do not seem to satisfy this endless desire) and politics is well best left alone. My personal opinion on the players wearing red and black on the last day, is that it was a little over the top, many will disagree but I concur with your sentiments. Tiger Woods is in the heart and mind of millions of people around the globe. We wish him a speedy and full recovery. Regards

In any event its great to hear that he is on the mend and we hope and pray that he will be able to play golf again. Regards Tony Watts

Reading the Putt 101 by Sean Botha

P

utting, has a big impact on your score at the end of your round, therefore you should spend a bit more time around the greens to ensure you have the correct speed and line. You could easily knock off a few shots, per round, by reading a putt correctly, not only, finding the correct line but also judging the speed correctly. With this information, you will be more comfortable over the ball with the putter and end up seeing better putting stats. Local rules of a golf club generally display stimp-meter readings, indicating speed of the greens on the golf course. The speed is calculated by a standardized device and method indicating how many feet the ball would roll out, on a relatively flat surface. Fast greens, average between 9 and 11, whereas slower greens, around 6 - 8. The speed of the greens will have an influence on how much

6

a putt would break, generally slow greens will have less break and faster greens break easier. Warming up your putting, before you tee-off, will have a positive impact on your feel for the speed of the greens on the course, allowing you to judge your line and speed effectively. Every green has a high point and a low point, as they are designed to drain water, especially during rainy seasons. This would give you a good indication where majority of the green would slope towards. Greens will also slope mostly to nearby water hazards, to ensure that a heavy rain pour will not get caught up on the green. A common reading routine of advanced golfers: • read the putt from a few feet behind the ball, this should assist you to justly see the slope, left to right or right to left.

• Walk up towards the opposite side of the hole, read the putt from the side view as you go, avoiding playing partners lines, to identify if it will be an uphill or, downhill putt. • Read the putt from a few feet beyond the hole, looking back at the ball.

• Judge your amount of break, based on the ascend or descend to the hole, Keeping in mind our speed discussion, earlier on. Once you have rolled your putt: By making a positive stroke, the ball rolls past the hole, pay attention to the break, this should give you an idea of the break of the return putt, giving you a better chance at making a great choice. Thank you for taking the time to read our article, if you need information on green reading, or assistance, regarding your putting technique, we will be delighted to help you at Woodhill Residential Estate & Country Club. Good luck on your journey to your personal best!

Nelly makes it back to back wins for the Korda's

J

essica Korda opened the LPGA Tour season last month by winning the Tournament of Champions.

Last month, it was Nelly’s turn. Only the second time ever that two sisters won back to back LPGA events. Nelly Korda followed in big sister’s footsteps with a three-shot victory that looked easier than it felt. She seized control with three birdies through six holes, closed with 12 pars and shot a 3-under 69 at Lake Nona to win the Gainbridge LPGA. More than just matching her sister, Korda won for the first time on American soil. The other three victories for 22-year-old Nelly were in Australia and twice in Taiwan. It also was the first

time she won with her parents watching. Her father, Petr Korda, is a former Australian Open tennis champion. On the other side of the course, Annika Sorenstam wrapped up her return after more than 12 years of retirement with a par on the ninth hole for a 76, finishing last among the 74 players who made the cut. The 50-year-old Swede was making this one-time appearance because Lake Nona has been her home course for two decades. She has said she plans to play the U.S. Senior Women’s Open this summer and she’ll need to get sharp, though Sorenstam said preparing for that would not include another LPGA event. Sorenstam finished 29 shots behind Korda, who won by three over Lexi Thompson and Lydia Ko.

Birdies4Rhinos: The conservation initiative championed by players

I

n honour of World Wildlife Day, we’re taking a closer look at Birdies4Rhinos – a charity started and championed by European Tour players Justin Walters and Dean Burmester. Birdies4Rhinos is a charity which was fuelled by a desire to aid wildlife conservation and the protection of rhinos in South Africa. Started just over five years ago by European Tour players Justin Walters and Dean Burmester, the charity raises money to help in the fight against poaching of rhinos through every birdie recorded by players involved. Walters was the initial instigator of the idea, having been motivated to do something one

day after noticing a worrying lack of rhinos on a game drive with his family. Knowing he wanted to protect rhinos for future generations, Walters approached both his

manager and Burmester about creating an idea that would see them give back by using golf to help. “The idea was actually born at the Alfred Dunhill Championship five years ago,” “On Tuesday evening Justin Walters had gone into the park for a long drive with his family and didn’t see one rhino and realised he didn’t want his kids to grow up not knowing what a rhino is. “The next morning he spoke to our manager, and he then came up to me in the players’ lounge and said ‘listen Burmy I’ve got this idea, are you on board?’ and I said ‘dude, let’s do it’. ‘donate what we can’, and it’s an initiative which has only grown in strength and numbers over the past few years. Now, a Birdies4Rhinos leaderboard exists throughout the year, and the charity also works with sculptors to help create pieces that they auction off. “It’s snowballed into this amazing project we have now; we work with great sculptors who make sculptures for our auction, and we’ve now got a total of 18 golfers. We’re all passionate about it, and we all just donate what we can.” One of those ambassadors is Justin Rose, and Burmester said his agreement to join was a big moment for the cause. “A big moment was when Justin [Walters]

JOHN COLLIER 2021

fourteenth ANNUAL

John Collier Survey T

he 14th edition of the John Collier Annual Survey on Environmental Compliance and Good Governance of South African Golf Courses has been sent to golf clubs throughout South Africa. We trust that you will find this edition an interesting read, but moreover that you will derive some benefit from the findings. Notwithstanding the torrid time the golf industry has experienced during 2020, what is positive is that there was an increase in the number of clubs participating in the Survey and there was a slight improvement in the national environmental compliance and good governance level of 31%.

One of the findings from the Survey is that a lot more attention needs to be focused on good governance compliance. The Survey recommends that GolfRSA review the KingIVTM principles and apply them to their business processes as a matter of course, and then in their role as acting for and on behalf of amateur golf in South Africa that these principles are made applicable through the representative associations (such as SAGA, WGSA), to the Provincial Unions and through them to the clubs. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email ajcollier@telkomsa.net or visit the John Collier Website at www.johncolliergolf.com.

approached Justin Rose in Ireland, and he said ‘I know you were born here, I know your mum is South African, you’ve got to be passionate about it’, and he jumped on board, which helped raise our profile a lot.” Final Leaderboard Many congrats to @JagerLouis on winning the 2020 birdie count!! Also many thanks to all the players for supporting @birdies4rhinos and wildlife conservation. Let’s hope you all make even more birdies in 2021!!! — Birdies4Rhinos (@Birdies4Rhinos) December 15, 2020 In addition to the money raised by players and donations, the charity is also now involved in a project with ‘Connect Conservation’ that helps to protect rhinos in Sabi Sands.

March | April 2021

“We’ve also joined Connect Conservation, who save wildlife all over the world, and we’re involved in a project that helps protect rhinos in Sabi Sands using a lot of technology,” Burmester explained. “In the last five years they’ve only lost one rhino in the whole project, which is amazing. They’ve really taken us to a new level the last two years, and Dimension Data and Doc Watson need a lot of credit for that. “We’ve had the opportunity to go there and experience the whole process, and it’s humbling to know that the better we play the more difference we make, so it’s a cool motivation. We all just want to save these beautiful animals, and hopefully one day we can get the poaching down to nothing.” Find out more: @Birdies4Rhinos

When I was 7 years old, playing rugby with my dad. 3. World Cup 2019 winner, how did that feel? Surreal, a great end to a career, but an even better result for our country and its people. 4. What were the biggest challenges for the team during the World Cup in Japan? I think it would have to be that our strategy meant that we were away from home for a very long time, longer than other teams (but which had a positive impact on our game and

how we were received in Japan). There was also a bit of adversity caused by the medias interpretation of our game strategy and the bomb squad, but navigating that externally was more difficult than navigating that internally as the guys knew there was no negative intent. 5. Being in retirement now, what position did you actually prefer playing? The more involved the better – maybe I should have been an inside centre. 6. During your time at Saracens you won four Premiership titles in 2011, 2015, 2016 and 2018, as well as the European Champions Cup in 2016 and 2017, is there one that stands out for any pa-ticular reason? Emotional Grace snatches Puerto Rico PGA win

B

randen Grace conjured up an eagle-birdie finish to claim an emotional one-shot victory at the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open end of February. The 32-year-old from Pretoria, whose father died from Covid-19 in January, holed out from a bunker for a brilliant eagle two on the 17th before making a birdie on the last to seal victory at Rio Grande’s Grand Reserve GC.

zone. I played the right shot at the right time. I got aggressive. “I spoke to my my wife today and she said that my dad’s watching over me and he’ll give me the guidance I needed, and he did.” Grace’s remarkable finish was agonising viewing for Venezuela’s Vegas, who had looked to have done enough for victory with a seven-under-par 65 that included eight birdies and one bogey.

Grace, who carded a six-under-par 66 to finish on 19 under, had glanced skywards after chipping in for his eagle on the penultimate hole.

Vegas had led Grace by two shots going into the final two holes, only to be denied by the South Africa’s superb eagle two and closing birdie. Vegas finished on 18 under.

He later credited inspiration from his late father for his aggressive approach to the closing holes, where he needed to pick up shots to have any chance of overhauling clubhouse leader Johnattan Vegas.

There was disappointment too for overnight co-leaders Grayson Murray and Rafael Campos.

“It was good. I was just able to hit the shots that I needed. I just stayed in the moment, in the

two-under-par 70s, finished three off the lead on 16 under.

Murray looked to have given himself a chance to challenge for a share of the lead after a birdie on the 17th, but sent his tee shot on the 18th out of “My old man passed away not too long ago, and bounds to effectively end his chances of forcing a playoff. he always said I’m an aggressive player and I knew he was watching over me,” Grace said. Murray and Campos, who both carded closing

Cane Driving range

D

riving ranges are an essential way of allowing people into the game of golf, so it was with great pleasure that we came upon the Cane Range situated at Collisheen Estate next door to Sugar Rush Park in Ballito. Bustling with school children taking lessons from Sunshine Tour professional Warren Abery, on the day that we visited, Cane Range is a down to earth practice facility that is a welcome addition to this neck of the woods.

March | April 2021

With plenty of bays (all synthetic grass at the moment, real grass bays are in the pipeline) and a delightful coffee shop, Cane Range is the ideal place to take the family on the weekend.

There are golfers of all abilities and you can hit balls without worrying that someone may be “judging” your swing. Perfect for those who are new to the game.

Umhlali Country Club

nly 20 minutes North of Durban, bordering the town of Ballito lies Umhlali Country Club, here you will find a scenic undulating golf course in a tropical garden setting, a true gem of the Dolphin Coast.

The club also has five top notch tennis courts, three of which are floodlit, two squash courts, two AA rated bowls greens one with flood lights for some fun evening bowls and a full driving range with a chipping green, practice putting green and a bunker to practice some sandy shots.

The eighteen-hole course was designed by Peter Matkovich and is characteristically varied, providing a fantastic golfing test over the relatively short distance.

With a long history on the North coast, Umhlali Country Club continues to grow from strength to strength.

Indigenous flora and fauna are plentiful here too and the course has simply been sculpted around the inherent beauty of the land. To the east lies the Indian Ocean and to the West, are rolling hills.

Du rban Country Club

T

owards the end of the First World War serious consideration was first given to the establishment of a Country Club in Durban. Country clubs were beginning to proliferate in other parts of South Africa and as Durban was already achieving a reputation as the leading seaside resort, it seemed imperative that such an amenity be attained – for residents and visitors alike.

Pressure was also mounting for the establishment of a second golf course in the town due to the problems facing the Durban Golf Club (now Royal Durban). The Durban Golf Club situated on a low-lying swamp at Greyville, with the race track running around it, was repeatedly subject to flooding, which often cancelled out all golf. A final straw was when floods made this course virtually unplayable for the 1920 South African Golf Championships and it was feared that

68

Durban would not be asked to host the event again in 1924.

George Waterman accepted the challenge of building the course and was assisted in this endeavour by fellow professional golfer Laurie Waters – a four times winner of the South African Open. The difficulties these men faced were immense. All earth-moving had to be done manually. Giant sand dunes were flattened, dense bush and trees chopped down and carted away. Durban Country Club was officially opened on December 9, 1922. After the Mayoress had formally declared the golf course open, course designer George Waterman had the privilege of driving the first ball down the fairway of what is now one of the most famous golf courses in the world.

Durban Country Club is situated in the heart of Durban and is no stranger in the golfing world.Enriched with history, the golf course saw Gary Player’s first South African Open success in 1956 with a score of 286. He returned in 1969 (having won the title another five times in the interim) to score a 273, which included a then record round of 64 (the course record now is 62, held by John Bland). In 1998 Ernie Els won his third South African Open at the club, opening with a 64 that left him in a position of dominance that he was not to relinquish. The course has hosted 17 South African Opens in total, more than any other club in South Africa, and was the proud host of the Centenary SA Open in 2010. 2020 was a year for change and going in to 2021 the Durban Country Club Team prepares for 2022 and 2023. A historical milestone for Durban Country Club as the Clubhouse (2022) and the Golf Course (2023) celebrate their Centenary Years! South Africa’s fI rst Residential Golf Estate

I

n the mid-1900s, the area where the Selborne Golf Estate is situated today was some eighty hectares large and was held by Lord Selborne, the Secretary for the Colonies.

The Selborne homestead, or main hotel manor house as we know it today, was built and completed in 1954 by Vernon Crookes as the official residence of the M.D of Reynolds Brothers Ltd, the company that operated the local Sezela sugar mill. Only the finest materials were used in the construction of the building, and the entire joinery together with the oak paneling, window panes and flooring was imported from England. After Mr. Crookes retired in 1964 he acquired the manor house together with 80 hectares of gracious estate for his personal use and named it Selborne Park. The whippet that forms the current estate logo is derived from the Lord Selborne family crest. During 1979, the magnificent Selborne Park estate, owned by the widow of the sugar magnate Vernon Crookes, came up for sale and Denis Barker bought the estate for his family home and the running of his Fayden Jersey Stud farm. In 1982 he led the South African delegation to the World Jersey Cattle Conference in Canada, after which they toured the USA. While visiting friends in Waterloo, Iowa he played golf at a golf housing estate for the first time which inspired his vision to create Selborne.

Early photo of the halfway house Upon his return to South Africa, he began to transform his farm into a golfing residential estate. In 1985 Denis’ dream of a luxury golfing complex at Selborne started to become a reality. In May 1987 the course was opened for play, and the very first residential golf estate in South Africa was born. Old converted railway carriages were used as the first change rooms and halfway house. The homestead turned into a lodge with seven bedrooms and in due course a new clubhouse was built. The Golf Committee used the lodge, the current hotel, as the members club house, which operated until January 1989, when the new Club House was completed.

San Lameer T

- The Go od Life

he San Lameer golf course and club house was completed and officially opened on 7 November 1992 by Dr D.J. de Villiers, Minister of Public Enterprises.

Greens of lush grass, surrounded by water or barracked by rocky outcrops or bold sweeping fairways, have earned San Lameer a rating as one of the top courses in the country.

The 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes, is in the heart of a large nature conservation area. The course is sculpted around the last wetland forest on the South Coast to avoid areas of sensitive vegetation and utilize indigenous plants and shrubs in the natural features. With the shaping of the course many trees were removed of which 85% were successfully replanted.

76

The course also provides golfing enthusiasts with a natural challenge through vast clearings, forests and wetlands, with the waves of the Indian Ocean crashing alongside. One of the most prominent challenges of the golf course, aside from its varying gradients and difficult lies, is to avoid getting distracted by the striking views!

H

ome to a challenging 18-hole championship golf course that stretches along the expansive Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape, the Wild Coast Sun Country Club forms part of the South African PGA circuit. With its par-70 card rating, the course boasts magnificent ocean views and magnificently curated fairways and greens. Opened in 1983, many golfers insist that this coastal course is one of the most beautiful golfing ranges in South Africa. However, the course offers more than just pretty fairways and well-kept greens. The course’s architect, Robert Trent Jones Jnr, made every effort to utilise the natural topography and geography of the region to its fullest. The result? A one-of-a-kind course that

blends in with its natural surrounds. Famed for being one of the top golf courses in South Africa, the Wild Coast Sun golf course extends over rugged terrain along the Indian Ocean. Creating a dramatic golfing experience, this breathtaking golf course in Port Edward is played over hills, ravines, rivers, dams and waterfalls making it a challenge for professionals and amateurs alike. Right from the opening hole, which sweeps down towards a lagoon, to the 18th with the Indian Ocean as its backdrop, golfing at Wild Coast Sun is an unforgettable experience and with its close proximity to Durban, the Wild Coast Sun is the ideal location for golfing holidays along the KZN coastline.

PGA TOUR alters order-of-play protocol for playoffs

N

o longer will PGA TOUR players dip hands into a Rules official’s upside-down hat to determine the order of play in extra holes.

Instead, the TOUR will go to a first-to-finish, first-to-play format for playoffs. Players in the same group will play off in the same order in which they finished regulation play within their group. The TOUR Rules Committee’s decision was made after a Player Advisory Council meeting at The Genesis Invitational last week and will go into effect immediately. Immediacy, in fact, was one of the driving factors for the change, which is expected to expedite the playoff process and tip broadcast partners ahead of time as to the order of play.

March | April 2021

The full e-mail is below: With support from the PAC during last week’s meeting, the PGA TOUR Rules Committee is making a change to the “order of play” protocol used during tournament playoffs. Rather than deciding the order of play “by draw” as has been done in the past, beginning this week we will now use a procedure based on order of finish in the final round. The order of play within the playoff group will be done on a “first-to-finish, first-to-play” method. For players tied in the same final round group, order of play within the final round groupings will be used. Simplifying this procedure allows us to expedite the process to start the playoff and also allows our broadcast partners to know the order of play in advance.

Is this the end ?

T

iger Woods is still rcovering from major surgery on his right leg after being involved earlier in the day in a “high-speed” single-car accident outside Los Angeles last month. Woods suffered “comminuted open fractures” to both the upper and lower portions of his tibia and fibula in his right leg, as well as damage to the ankle bones and trauma to the muscle and soft tissue of the leg, according to an update released via his social-media account. A comminuted fracture is when a bone breaks into more than two pieces, and an open fracture suggests bone broke the skin. As part of the procedure, Woods’ right leg was stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia. Screws and pins were used to stabilize the bones in the foot and ankle. A surgical release of the covering of the muscle was also performed

to relieve pressure due to swelling. Woods was the sole occupant of a 2021 Genesis GV80 SUV when he headed northbound on a downhill, windy portion of Hawthorne Ave., a two-lane road in Rancho Palos Verdes. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Woods was driving at a “relatively greater speed than normal” when his vehicle crossed onto the wrong side of the road at approximately 7:12 a.m. before veering off the road entirely and onto a hillside. A neighbor called 911 to alert authorities of the accident, and Woods was conscious when they arrived on the scene. “It’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said Carlos Gonzalez, an L.A. County Sheriff’s Department deputy who was the first to report to the scene of the accident.

SPECIAL FEATURE - Autumn is the time for action

Autumn is the time for action By: Sue de Zwart

A

utumn is the time for action particularly on warm season turf & areas prone to poa annua germination.

KIKUYU growers – best to get control of LARGE PATCH (name Kikuyu patch) by South Africans This aggressive disease tends to raise its nasty head in spring however needs to be treated in autumn. Headway Maxx apply at 2-3 litres/ha is very effective. Best to follow this up with a 2nd application 21 days later. Large Patch is spread by dead or alive plant material so best not do any autumn or spring cultural practises before applying your fungicide. POA ANNUA – friend of foe? Poa Annua can be an incredible putting surface is you look at many of the top USA courses. After working the 2004 US Open at Shinnecock with those firm, fast poa annua greens – it was a reminder to me it can be done. If you don’t want poa annua in your greens then there are a few things you can do to assist this.

Do not starve your bent in the hope you won’t get poa annua – as Dr. Joe Vargas says – superintendents have tried this for many years with the same results ……. Use a penetrant/polymer wetting agent combo

– like Qualibra – it is awesome to see how this product keeps the playing surface dry with moisture in the root zone – poa does not like this. Don’t hollow-tyne in April or August as these are the prime germination months for poa annua Apply Pennant Magnum at 2 litres/ha on all kikuyu or bermuda areas to avoid germination in spring. (Do not apply Pennant Magnum to warm season areas). Remember poa annua seed can live in the soil for over 90 years. Ryder is a great tool as we move into the cooler months By applying Ryder from April to August you will reducing the stress on your turf which will give you a far happier plant in winter & a great kick start to the season ahead. WALALA WASALA – if the perfect phrase for this time of year!
