Dear Ed

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader.

I was reading a magazine of yours the other day which made interesting reading, it was very informative. I have been interested in playing golf for a while now and was wondering which would be the best way to start, in terms of buying clubs etc. Can you offer any advice on how I would make a start, where I can start practicing, driving ranges etc. I live in the kloof area.

I am also going down to East London in about two weeks’ time, for business and pleasure, and then possibly on to Mossel Bay to visit my son. Would you be able to recommend a couple of golf courses to visit down there? My son incidentally has also expressed an interest in playing golf, it would be ideal for me to spend quality time with him on the golf course. He has passed his commercial pilot’s licence and just needs to complete more practical flying time to enable him to fly for gain. I also think it would be an ideal opportunity for him to pick up possible business opportunities on the golf course.

Thanks for a fantastic magazine. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards

Thanks for writing in, it is great to hear that you are thinking of playing golf. I am not sure if you have never played the game before or if you are picking it up after a break. However as far as advice on clubs etc, I would recommend that you pop into Kloof Country Club and have a chat to one of the pro’s there. Speak to the general manager and find out what a membership will cost you as this will save you money down the line if you are going to play on a regular basis.

East London Golf Club is one of the oldest golf clubs in South Africa, you would do well to pay them a visit. As far as Mossel Bay goes there are two options, Pinnacle Point and the Mossel Bay Golf Club. Pinnacle Point is a dramatic course which can be difficult depending of the elements whilst Mossel Bay Golf Club touts itself as the “friendly club” and it certainly is.

Congratulations to your son on obtaining his commercial pilots license, he will undoubtedly benefit from playing golf both from a social and a business point of view.

Regards

Part 3: Chipping

Make your practice

The importance of your swing path when

When chipping with more lofted wedges, where you need a higher trajectory to land the ball softer and to get it to stop sooner, your swing path is crucial, as this will help you to achieve clean contact on the ball, which will help a lot with distance control. It will also help with trajectory as a clean strike will ensure you use the maximum loft of your chosen club.

Your swing path when chipping should be steeper than that of a full swing, this means your club should travel down with a more vertical motion. A good feeling to have is that you are dropping the clubhead onto the ball, rather than sweeping at the ball.

If you look at the backswing, as you take the club back, the clubhead should move upward at a relatively steep angle. Your lower body won’t move as much as you want to keep it stable to ensure your weight favours the left side (for right handed golfers). Your wrists should hinge naturally as you move the club up, but make sure to keep your hands close to your body so your chest doesn’t move away from the ball.

On the downswing, steeper angle body and ahead to sweep at the Keeping your help you to hit blow.

The above image illustrates where the ball should pass the alignment stick in front of you. Always make sure to setup this alignment stick slightly right of your target. The ball is travelling on the target line.

What to avoid

• Avoid an overly flat swing path, as this can lead to poor contact and inconsistent results. This can also cause the club to dig into the ground too much, which will cause fat shots or even missing the entire ball.

• Avoid over-swinging the club, this could result in too much lower body movement or deceleration on the downswing.

• Avoid flipping your wrists or letting your hands trail behind the club head at impact.

Lastly, the finish position should be controlled, your chest and hips should face your intended target. This will ensure that you maintain your balance throughout the shot.

Important steps to remember

• Steeper and vertical swing path

• Control the hands and the wrists

• Good balance and minimal body rotation

• Controlled follow through, belt buckle to target.

BOSHOFF CLAIMS HISTORIC VICTORY IN PRETORIA

Paul Boshoff claimed a historic eight-shot victory in the eighth tournament of the Betway Big Easy Tour that was played at Waterkloof Golf Club, making it two wins in two weeks in the process.

A final round 63 which included three eagles, five birdies and two bogeys took Boshoff’s total for the week to 21-under-par 63, some distance clear of Xander Basson who had led proceedings since that Tuesday.

Boshoff was two shots off Basson’s lead at the start of the final round and with some work to do, seeing how good Basson was playing. In the end, the Serengeti Golf and

Wildlife Estate, Boshoff, his second victory on Tour and over Basson this season. His feat etched him into the history books of the Betway Big Easy Tour as the first player to win back-to-back since the Tour returned under the Sunshine Tour banner.

DA SILVA CLINCHES MCB ROAD TO MAURITIUS TITLE WITH 7TH IN LEGENDS TOUR FINALE

Adilson Da Silva clinched the MCB Road to Mauritius title in December by finishing in a share of seventh after a closing three-under-par 69 in the MCB Tour Championship on the Legend Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage.

It was a case of third time’s a charm for Da Silva as he claimed the John Jacobs Trophy as the MCB Road to Mauritius number one after finishing second on the season-long points list the last two years. The Brazilian picked up wins at the OFX Irish Legends and European Legends Cup, plus a second place at the Zambia Golf Legends Championship, tied-second at the WINSTONgolf Senior Open and six more top-10s, including his tied-seventh this week.

“It’s difficult to describe it,” said Da Silva. “This is the really the cherry on top. It’s such a prestigious trophy to win. It’s just been such an experience, you know, to finish runner-up twice. Sometimes you start to think it’s not going to happen. It’s amazing when all the work and things pay off. It’s so rewarding. It’s just been such a wonderful journey for me.

“I have to thank a lot of people. You know, it’s not only you at the end of the day; it’s your family, your coaches, your physiotherapist, the sponsors. It’s a lot of people involved. It means a lot to me and for my family as well,

so yeah, they’re very happy.”

Up ahead of Da Silva, defending champion Peter Baker of England finished birdie-birdie to shoot a final round of 68 and then birdied the par-five 18th a further three times in extra holes to outlast Barry Lane Rookie of the Year Simon Griffiths, also of England.

Baker finished second on the Order of Merit, with Scott Hend third, Griffiths fourth and former Ryder Cup player Joakim Haeggman rounding out the top five. All five have earned a slice of the MCB Road to Mauritius Bonus Pool and the top four have qualified for the Champions Tour’s Trophy Hassan II in Morocco in February.

The top 10 this season have guaranteed their entry into three senior major championships next year – the Senior Open, the US Senior Open and the Senior PGA Championship. That means Horne, James, Hutcheon, Robert Coles and Thomas Gögele can also look forward to some fantastic opportunities in 2025.

John Collier Annual Survey

ESG PLANNING FOR 2025

Every year golf organisations such as Golf RSA, provincial golf unions and golf clubs prepare their annual financial statements, which are approved and signed off. The notes to the accounts usually have a statement to the effect that the annual financial statements have been prepared in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IRFS) for small and medium entities. This statutory requirement has been in place for several years.

Notwithstanding the above there has been a shift wherein it is no longer sufficient to merely report on the financial position of an entity, but also to report on environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues as well.

Many golfing organisations in South Africa have been reluctant to report on ESG issues, in particular the “G” or governance aspects of an entity.

The usual reasons given for this reluctance include, the entity is not listed on the JSE, being too small, costly implementation, administrative complexity, an entity’s existing culture of applying principles of transparency, accountability and ethical leadership, and governance principles are not applicable to them, especially as they have been operating successfully without such measures.

Regrettably, in South Africa there have been too many examples of governance failures. For example, during 2024 hardly a month went by without one of the national sporting organisations being in the press for the wrong reasons. It is suggested that with the necessary governance principles in place, many of these failures could have been prevented or mitigated.

As is the case with the IFRS financial reporting standards, it is only a matter of time before the IFRS ESG reporting standards become a reporting requirement. The European Union (EU) already requires reporting compliance for certain companies in terms of IRFS ESG standards. In November 2024, the International Standards Organisation (ISO) published its first edition of the framework for implementing ESG principles. Furthermore, the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), released its standard reporting taxonomy for IFRS ESG standards for implementation by 2026.

Notwithstanding the formal developments, as referred to above, we note that our courts are also taking cognizance of governance principles.

continued on page 25...

continued from page 24...

In September 2024, the Centre for Environmental Rights and the Institute of Directors of South Arrica published a legal memorandum dealing with “Director duties and liability for climate risk under South African law.” This memorandum emphasises the critical point that the fiduciary duties of directors are mandatory and apply to all companies, including all golfing entities. Furthermore, the memorandum states that the King Reports have been relied upon by our courts to embed an understanding of these duties and are now readily relying on non-binding standards of good governance to give meaning to director’s duties, as has been codified in the Companies Act.

In closing, we wish all entities operating within the golfing industry a prosperous and productive 2025, and a big thank you to all of the golf clubs who participate in the John Collier ESG survey.

As a final thought in preparing for 2025, it is inevitable that compliance reporting on IFRS ESG principles is coming. While the 17th edition of the John Collier Survey dealt with ESG issues, if one is looking for further guidance, one needs to look no further than the ESG Sustainability Integrated Report of Remgro Limited, which was recently signed off by its Chairman, Mr. Johan Rupert, who, as many of you will know, is also Chairman of Golf RSA, and a major benefactor of golf in South Africa through Golf RSA.

2025 - PRICE STRUCTURE

KNOW YOUR GOLF CLUB’S GENERAL MANAGER

You have recently been appointed as General Manager at State Mines CC, have you always been in the golf industry?

I was appointed as GM of State Mines in December 2023, and never worked in the golf industry before. I have been a member at State Mines for 22 years, The Finance Chair asked me to assist with the running of the club as I previously had 13 years experience in the hospitality industry with food and beverage.

but the biggest challenge to date is the supply of water to the golf course, no water no golf course.

In your opinion, what is the most important thing to run a successful golf club?

Ensure that there are financial controls and systems in place, thereafter getting feet through the golf course is critical for any golf course.

Did you ever have a mentor or someone you looked up to?

No, not really.

What are your biggest challenges currently at State Mines CC?

Our location in Brakpan remains a challenge

Describe a typical workday for you at State Mines CC?

I don’t really have a typical workday as each day varies, Tuesday and Thursday’s are our pensioners days, I am here early on those days to look after their group, and for the past 3 months we have had lots of golf days. I get personally involved with golf days to ensure we give the customers a service they expect when booking their golf days with us. The rest of the time is spent on admin and problem solving at the club.

Has the hospitality industry grown in your opinion over the last 3 years?

The hospitality industry as a whole has grown over the past three years, I do not think that is the same with golf specifically as we see rounds are similar or even down on previous years. We remain optimistic to try and get more rounds through at State Mines. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to State Mines CC?

We will continue to try and keep our core product, which is our golf course, in the pristine condition it is in. We are a good value for money golf course and whenever we have golfers play at State Mines we receive extremely positive feedback.

Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at State Mines CC?

This is and always will be a challenge, we try to have a marshal on the course on the busier days at the club, to chase up players, but until all golfers take the responsibility to ensure they are part of the solution to speed up play and not as part of the problem this will continue.

Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life?

Yes this is a 7 day a week business and certainly not a 9 to 5 Job. It is very difficult to find a balance with the personal life especially if you have a family.

What are your short & long term goals?

Short term goals are to continue with the positives we are achieving at State Mines, We have made some great inroads to turning the club around over the past 12 months, we will continue to improve our product and offering to the member and our visitors, The long term goals are to have State Mines Country Club in a stable position to continue on for a long time into the future.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Spending time with the family, I am blessed to have a family that supports me so I try and give them as much of my free time as possible.

Do you still get time to play some golf?

If you think you are joining a golf course to play more golf, I learnt that is certainly not the case. I try and play once a week but do not always achieve that sadly.

CHIARA TAMBURLINI COMPLETES HAT-TRICK OF WINS WITH 2024 PLAYERS’ PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Switzerland’s Chiara Tamburlini was named Players’ Player of the Year at the Ladies European Tour (LET) End of Season awards to take home a hat-trick of trophies.

The Swiss star finished the year with 2,718.44 points winning the Order of Merit by 502.23 points and the Rookie of the Year by 1274.73 points and becoming the seventh player to win both titles in the same season.

Tamburlini added another trophy to her ever-growing collection after being voted Players’ Player of the Year for the 2024 season. LET Members were given the chance to vote for their Player of the Year over the final few

weeks of the season with the winner revealed in Spain.

The Players’ Player of the Year recognises a player who is a role model for current and aspiring LET players, both inside and outside the ropes. Their overall enthusiasm and achievement has inspired others to take up golf and strive to achieve their goals.

The Swiss star graduated from the LET Access Series (LETAS) in 2023 and won three times on Tour this year with victories at the Joburg Ladies Open, Lacoste Ladies Open de France and Wistron Ladies Open – Taiwan.

SØREN KJELDSEN WINS PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS QUALIFYING TOURNAMENT-FINAL STAGE

Denmark’s Søren Kjeldsen cruised to an eight-stroke win at the PGA TOUR Champions Qualifying Tournament (Final Stage) following a final-round 66 at TPC Scottsdale (Champions Course) in early December.

Kjeldsen, who turns 50 on May 17, 2025, posted 24-under, the lowest total score since Q-School Final Stage returned to 72 holes (from 108 holes) in 2006. His eight-stroke triumph is the largest margin of victory in Final Stage history, bettering a seven-stroke victory by Bob Gilder in 2000. Kjeldsen, who co-led after the first round, held the solo lead by two after the second round and by three after the third round before matching the low round of the day on Friday.

“This week has been incredible,” Kjeldsen said. “Yesterday morning when I started out, I was really nervous. I actually had a good warm-up today and was a little bit calmer, but the first few holes were playing tough, so I was a little on edge. I wanted it so badly.”

Kjeldsen, who also medaled at last month’s First Stage Q-School site at Grand Bear Golf Club in Mississippi, had his son Emil caddying for him all week.

“This is a week I’ll never forget,” Kjeldsen said. “It’s probably some of the best golf I’ve ever played. It’s been such a special moment for the two of us.”

Sweden’s Freddie Jacobson, who turned 50 in September, finished runner-up at 16-under, playing with fellow European Kjeldsen in all four rounds.

“Nothing was easy out there for me today,” said Jacobson, who closed with 71 after opening 65-66-66. “It was just a matter of hanging in there and luckily, I played well the last couple holes to secure it. I haven’t competed that much lately, so I definitely had nerves today.”

Mark Walker, Felipe Aguilar and Brendan Jones shared third place at 14-under to earn their PGA TOUR Champions cards for 2025. They are each fully exempt into open, full-field events next year. Dicky Pride, Scott Barr and Andre Stolz tied for sixth at 13-under, one stroke out of a playoff that would’ve been for 2025 status on the Champions Tour. Players who finished sixth to 30th at Q-School are eligible to play in open qualifiers in 2025.

MEMORABLE WEEKEND SEES MOOLMAN WIN SA PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

For the first 36 holes, Pieter Moolman was fighting to make the cut. Over the next 36 holes, Moolman was fighting to win the South African PGA Championship, sponsored by African Bank.

The Benoni golfer capped off a weekend to remember with a one-stroke victory in this prestigious championship, adding his name to a trophy that already bears the names of Gary Player, Ernie Els, Nick Price, Mark McNulty, David Frost, Dale Hayes and many of the other greats of Southern African golf.

Starting the final round three strokes off the lead, Moolman played composed golf and produced a bogey-free 67 to win on 15 under par and go one better than his second place in 2021.

The 22-year-old Barend Botha, who was one shot off the lead going into the final round, held the lead on his own with a strong front nine. But three bogeys on the tricky back nine gave him a 70 and second place on 14 under par as he came up inches short for birdie on the last to force a playoff with Moolman

Trevor Fisher Jnr. overcame a double-bogey start and signed for a 70 to take third place on 11 under par, while Senekal settled for fourth on 10 under par with a closing 75.

It was a weekend Moolman will not forget soon as he looked up at the leaderboard from making the cut on the number of par on Friday, and then

played the next 36 holes in superb fashion including a course record 62 on Saturday.

“This would’ve been hard to believe after the first two rounds. I didn’t really feel like I was playing well, but then I had a good fight for it over the weekend and here we are,” said Moolman.

“There are some big names on this trophy. I came close a few years ago.

To shoot the course record on Saturday and then to win the trophy today, I feel amazing.”

Botha certainly announced himself as a future star of the Sunshine Tour and now has two top-10s in his last two tournaments.

But it was Moolman’s composure on especially the back nine at St Francis Links that really made the difference.

“This golf course is tricky. We didn’t have the normal wind on the final day and the back nine played really tough. The par saves are crucial around here. I wasn’t really watching the leaderboard. I think I saw it on 15 and 16, but from there on it’s just golf. You need to hit the shot you have in front of you and hope for the best. I’m just thankful I did it,” he said.

The South African PGA Championship was also proudly supported by the Eastern Cape Parks & Tourism Agency (ECPTA), the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, the Kouga Local Municipality, Momentum and Cape St Francis Resort.

Built on steep rolling terrain, through valleys and over hills, Prince’s Grant is a visual feast and an entertainingly varied challenge. Lots of unique looking holes, some in tropical surroundings among the coastal bush, others on higher ground being links-like in appearance.

The clubhouse and lodge is a magnificent double-storey building occupying a prime position with sea views, and bears a striking resemblance to that at Shinnecock Hills in the United States.

A wonderful year-round destination, golfers are lured here in winter by clear, windless days and warm temperatures.

HOME FAVOURITE BURMESTER WINS VODACOM ORIGINS FINAL

There’s no place like home, and Dean Burmester certainly feels it.

Burmester’s return home to the Sunshine Tour in November saw him win the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final at Oubaai Golf Estate by seven strokes, matching the second largest margin of victory in the history of this series. Jared Harvey owns the record for the largest margin of victory with his eight-stroke triumph in 2017.

“It’s just great to be back in South Africa playing golf and competing for trophies. I love South African golf,” said a delighted Burmester, who was surrounded by friends and family who watched him close with a 66 to win on 28 under par.

The beautiful natural surrounds lends itself to team building and leisure activities. Let us take the stress out of organising your next conference.

“It’s super special to win in front of so many friends and family. The South African hospitality is so special. The support we had and that super South African gees was just magnificent.”

Jean Hugo took second place on 21 under par with a closing 70.

Jacques Kruyswijk had an incredible final day as he surged up the leaderboard with a closing 62, including a back nine of 29, to finish third on 20 under par.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments.

Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too.

Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme

Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

This is Burmester’s second victory on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series after his win in 2015.

“I’m going into my 16th year as a pro and this series has been going on for way longer. Vodacom have been supporting our Tour and supporting careers and families for so long. Long may their unwavering support of the Sunshine Tour continue,” he said.

Danielle du Toit finished as the leading Sunshine Ladies Tour professional in 20th place on 13 under par with a final round of 68. Gabrielle Venter closed with a 69 to finish on 12 under par, while Cara Gorlei also posted a 69 to end her week on four under par.

Application timing is critical – One can never be too late.

The eradicant stage is pricey and a tough time to control a pest.

By sharing your scouting/pest reports we can assist you in getting your preventative application timing dialed in for the season ahead - it gets better each year as you tweak your programmes.

Best to apply fungicides, PGR’s and foliars early morning when the stomata are fully open - cool season plants stomata close at 25 degrees C.

Insecticides best applied late pm as they are active at night - this also prevents UV degradation. Water most insecticides in within 24 hours of the application.

Dusting thus gives you a firm playing surface.

Algae and moss are an indicator of poor drainage, excess thatch or overwateirng.

Very often this becomes a knock on effect as greens with high thatch and poor drainage are very tricky to manage in summer. Best to get your spring and autumn treatment done - 12mm x 2 per year or at least a 12mm in summmer and 8mm in autumn. The 3 week disruption will pay for itself in quality and longevity.

NORRIS CLAIMS HIS PLACE IN ALFRED DUNHILL CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY

South Africa’s Shaun Norris was overcome with emotion after claiming a thrilling one-stroke victory in the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek on Sunday.

Norris had earlier made a strong charge through the field, sparked by an eagle on the second hole, and closed with a 67 to lead in the clubhouse on 13 under par and tied with several players.

But it ended up being only South Africa’s Ryan van Velzen who had a realistic chance of catching him as he teed off the 18th tied for the lead. As Norris warmed up on the driving range for a possible playoff, Van Velzen hit

his approach into the water surrounding the treacherous 18th green and went on to make bogey.

“Unbelievable. Words can’t describe the feelings going through me at the moment. I’m over the moon,” said Norris after claiming his second DP World Tour title.

“I only knew I’d shot 67 after I made the last putt. I was so stuck in my head focusing on every shot and doing what I needed to do. At the end of the day it worked out nicely.”

place with England’s John Parry (69) and Sweden’s Marcus Kinhult (74) on 12 under par. Before teeing off on Sunday, Norris had told his brother and caddie Kyle that if they could be under par through the first five holes, they may stand a chance. And it was an eagle on the par-five second that gave him that chance.

“That eagle was key. It’s massive to get off to a good start and put yourself in a nice rhythm,” he said. A composed back nine featuring three birdies further strengthened his chances as he was the only player amongst the top four on the leaderboard who didn’t make a bogey on the back nine.

Norris was also overjoyed to win at a Leopard Creek course that holds a special place in every South African golfer’s heart.

“This title means everything to me. To win here at Leopard Creek, which is always in spectacular condition and where we’ve had such good champions such as Ernie Els, Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen – to now put my name on this trophy is a blessing. This changes a few things for me. I’ve got so much to look forward to over the next few years. But now it’s time for a holiday.”

Q A

WITH JERRY KHONZIWE

Golf course superintendent

Zebula Golf Estate

When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further?

I began my career in golf course maintenance in 2010 as a general worker. During this time, I developed a deep passion for my work and took every opportunity to learn and grow. In 2017, my dedication and hard work were recognized, and I was promoted to the position of second assistant greenkeeper at Elements. Continuing on this path, I earned another promotion in 2020, becoming an assistant greenkeeper at Silver Lakes. These experiences have shaped my professional journey and expanded my expertise in golf course maintenance.

What path did you follow to become a golf course superintendent?

My skills and knowledge have been acquired through a combination of hands-on experience, in-service training, and attending company-organized courses. Additionally, I have made a conscious effort to enhance my understanding by conducting research and reading books related to golf course and green

maintenance. This proactive approach has allowed me to stay informed about industry practices and advancements, ensuring that I bring value to my role.

What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?

The best part of my job is working collaboratively within a team, fostering progress in various areas, and transferring skills to all team members. I believe in respecting the perspectives of my colleagues and actively sharing ideas. I lead by example and encourage the team to learn from one another, which creates a supportive and productive environment. However, challenges arise, particularly when there are numerous complaints from clients. While we strive to address these concerns promptly, issues such as limited water supply for irrigation can sometimes hinder our ability to meet expectations fully.

The game on the golf course must cause some headaches every now and then, how do you manage this at Zebula Golf Estate?

As part of my daily responsibilities, I move around the entire golf course to conduct thorough assessments. This allows me to identify areas that require immediate attention and report these to the clients and my senior management. In my capacity as a superintendent, I also provide recommendations to address and resolve issues effectively, ensuring the golf course maintains its high standards.

With current temperatures being very high, what are the measures being taken to prevent the course getting burnt without using too much water?

Watering is a critical aspect of maintaining the course. I use hand-watering techniques for greens and tee boxes, paying special attention to dry spots on fairways by providing them with extra water. This approach ensures that the turf remains healthy and vibrant, even during periods of limited water availability.

How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance?

Extreme weather conditions, such as heatwaves, significantly impact golf course maintenance. These conditions increase the demand for intensive care and additional watering to prevent turf stress and damage. Addressing these challenges requires careful planning and resource management to minimize their effects on the course’s overall condition.

What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Zebula Golf Estate to other parts of the country?

Our golf course features specific grass types suited to each area:

Fairways: Kikuyu grass, known for its durability and lush growth. Greens: Bentgrass, chosen for its fine texture and ability to provide an excellent putting surface. Rough: Natural grass, which aligns with the natural aesthetics of the course. These grass types are selected to ensure the course meets both functional and aesthetic requirements.

Do you think it should be mandatory for golf courses to close one day per week for maintenance?

Our maintenance routines usually remain consistent. However,

adjustments are made when hosting large events to meet higher standards. These include enhanced grooming of greens and fairways, extra attention to detail in landscaping, and increased frequency of tasks to ensure the course is in peak condition.

People always complain about inconsistent

bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how?

Bunker maintenance involves several key activities to ensure they remain in excellent condition. These include:

Daily Tasks: Decompacting and raking to maintain a smooth and playable surface. Weekly Tasks: Edging, fly mowing, and weeding to keep the bunkers well-defined and aesthetically pleasing. This systematic approach ensures the bunkers contribute positively to the overall quality of the course.

FEDEXCUP CHAMPION SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER NAMED PGA TOUR PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The PGA Tour announced in December that 2024 FedExCup champion and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler has won the Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA Tour Player of the Year for the 2024 season. Scheffler won seven PGA Tour events in 2024, the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and the season-long FedExCup title.

Scheffler joins Woods as the only players to win the Jack Nicklaus Award in three consecutive seasons (est. 1990). Woods won Player of the Year in consecutive seasons from 1999-2003 (five straight) and 2005-07 (three straight). Scheffler (2022-24), Woods

(11 times, most recent 2013) and McIlroy (2012, 2014, 2019) are the only players to win the award three or more times. Since the inception of the FedExCup in 2007, nine players have won the FedExCup and PGA Tour Player of the Year in the same season.

“On behalf of the PGA Tour, congratulations to Scottie Scheffler on a truly historic season, capped off with his first FedExCup title and today a third consecutive Jack Nicklaus Award as PGA Tour Player of the Year,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Scottie took on

challenges from the best players in the world on the biggest stages all season, and being honored as PGA Tour Player of the Year is the ultimate sign of respect from his peers.”

Player of the Year is determined by a member vote, with PGA Tour members who played in at least 15 events during the 2024 season eligible to vote. The voting period ran from Nov. 25 through Dec. 4. Scheffler received 91 percent of the vote for the Jack Nicklaus Award and was selected over two other nominees: Xander Schauffele and McIlroy.

Scheffler won the FedExCup for the first time on the strength of seven PGA Tour victories in 2024, bringing his career total to 13 wins. He became the first player to successfully defend

his title at The Players Championship and won the Masters Tournament for the second time (2022, 2024), becoming the first player to win THE PLAYERS, a major championship and the FedExCup in the same season. In addition to wins at THE Players, Masters Tournament and Tour Championship, he captured four titles at Signature Events: Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, the Memorial Tournament and Travelers Championship.

His seven-win season marked the first time a player won seven or more times in a single season since Woods in 2007. Throughout the entire season, Scheffler maintained his No. 1 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking, a position he has occupied since May 21, 2023 (82 straight weeks). In total, Scheffler recorded a TOUR-best 16 top-10s in 19 starts and did not miss a cut.
