LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader.
I travel for work occasionally, mostly meetings that recur once or twice a year. My wife often travels with me, and we try and work in rounds of golf on most trips that we take together. I say all of this because we have been lucky enough to always be paired with people that were genuinely lovely on the golf courses we played.
My wife continuously threatens that we better not be paired with some idiot, etc... and then she always ends up saying, “well that was fun”. These were people from all walks of life and different areas around the country. All of them out there to have fun and escape whatever monotonous regimen they were normally doing. Whether they were retired or working or just escaping normal life stuff. It says a lot about the people that play golf, to be able to say what I just said. Most golfers are fun loving regular sort of people that play every kind of club and usually don’t care if you are good or bad as long as you play fast enough to keep up.
Bryan Anderson
Dear Bryan
Thank you for writing in.
Your experiences bear testament to what a beautiful game golf is. South Africa offers incredible diversity, with our golf courses ranging from very expensive to very affordable and whilst the conditioning may differ between these courses, the spirit amongst those out there enjoying the game is universal.
Even if you play slightly slower than the rest.
Regards

The Benefits and Uses of a Golf Driving
A golf driving range is a vital component for golfers of all skill levels, providing a dedicated space to practice and improve their swing. Whether you’re a beginner looking to learn the basics, or a scratch golfer looking to find one or two less strokes a round, a driving range offers numerous benefits and uses.
Benefits of Using a Golf Driving Range
1. *Improved Swing Technique*:
A driving range allows you to work on your swing faults and bad habits, with the help of standing in a controlled environment with alignment sticks and an abundance of balls, with no pressure on the result of each shot.
2. *Increased Accuracy and Distance*:
By practicing with different clubs and balls, you can work on increasing your accuracy and distance control with each club. Allowing for more confidence on the golf course.
3. *Enhanced Mental Focus*:
Practicing on a driving range helps you develop mental focus and discipline, essential for all golfers. This will help you take it out on the course in your Saturday school and impress your fellow playing partners.
4. *Convenience and Accessibility*:
Driving ranges are often open to the public from

SA WOMEN’S AMATEUR CELEBRATIONS FOR RAAD
Gia Raad went back-to-back in the South African Women’s Amateur Championship when she outlasted Lisa Coetzer 7&6 in the 36-hole final at PE Golf Club last month.
Raad produced a steady performance which simply ground the life out of the challenge of her younger opponent, who had started brightly by winning the first hole of the morning. Her lead lasted two holes, and, although she fought hard to keep things all tied up until the 11th, Raad was relentless.
“It feels just as good as last year,” said Raad of her victory. “A win is a win, and it doesn’t get old. But it definitely doesn’t get easier, either, like waking up at five every morning. But I’m really proud of myself and I’m glad I could pull things together after starting not so strong with the stroke play.”
“I tried to tell myself before we started that I had a long day today, and I wasn’t going to get too excited about
it, or emotional today, because there was a lot of holes to play. I think that helped.
It’s another impressive notch on her belt for Raad, and now she can gear up for the next big step in her life: “My goal is now to focus on my school,” she said. “I’m pretty happy with how I’ve done golf-wise, and I’m looking forward to going to the United States and studying there.”
LOUW CROWNED CHAMPION IN SA WOMEN’S STROKE PLAY
Kesha Louw cemented her status as GolfRSA’s number one amateur with a come-from-behind play-off victory in the South African Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship, at PE Golf Club last month.
Lourenda Steyn was third on one-under after her closing level-par 72, Casey Twidale fourth on level-par with her final round of 73, and Charlotte Millard fifth on three-over after she also closed with a level-par 72.
Both main protagonists hit their drives into the left rough. “I was very stressed out going onto the tee for the first play-off hole,” said Louw. “I told myself to relax because I had done so well, really. I just wanted to enjoy it and just keep things steady. I was in the rough for my second shot, but I had a good lie and took my seven-wood, my favourite club. I hit it just over the bunker and managed to chip and putt for par.”
Coetzer, who was just short of the green in front of the bunker, also had a chipping and putting chance, but she chipped to above the hole and left herself a slippery downhill 10-footer which she simply overcooked.
For Louw, the victory was both vindication of the strategy of keeping the errors to a minimum as well as the realisation of a lifelong dream. “It’s always been my dream to win this, and last night I was just thinking that I have really wanted this for a long time,” she said. “I’ve been working hard although the last few tournaments haven’t been the best results for me. To finish it off like this makes me really happy.”
VICTORIOUS VAN DER WATT LIFTS THE PROUDFOOT TROPHY
JP van der Watt celebrated his first national success in front of a jubilant home crowd when he lifted the Proudfoot Trophy as the winner the stroke play section of the South African Amateur Championship in February.
The home favourite fired an opening round of seven-under-par 65 to start the final round one off the pace, and his five-under 67 at Humewood GC lifted Van der Watt to 12-under.
“It’s always, always nice to win, but I have to say, this is special,” said Van der Watt, who plays out of Humewood. “I’m really honoured and proud to lift the Proudfoot Trophy.”
Bogey-free through all of the 36 holes, the Eastern Province golfer triumphed with a one-stroke edge over Dian Kruger, who chased hard, but his closing eight-under 64 was just not enough.
Juan Coetzee, who led after the first round, was third on 10-under after his second-round two-under-par 70, and India’s Sukhman Singh shared fourth on
nine-under with Jordan Wessels after rounds of 68 and 65 respectively.
Van der Watt said the advantage of his local knowledge was crucial to chiselling out his victory: “I do know the golf course like the back of my hand; it’s basically a second home. I know the misses, I know the winds and I know where to go. I did get a few favourable member’s bounces, but in golf, you take it when it comes.”
BRAVEHEART BARNARD CAPTURES SA AMATEUR AT HUMEWOOD
Charl Barnard produced the best performance of his when he defeated Cameron Mukherjee of Great Britain 5/3 in an enthralling the 36-hole match play final in the
South African Amateur Championship at Humewood GC in late February.
Barnard, who came back from an attempt at playing some golf at a US college because he just felt he could get more and better work done on his game at home, was able to point to this victory as vindication of his decision.
“This is really big for me,” he said. “Standing here with this trophy in arms is what every South African amateur dreams of. Coming back from college, people were always going to doubt me and wonder why I came back. I’m really happy to get this win, and it validates my decision perfectly.”

John Collier Annual Survey
EIGHTEENTH JOHN COLLIER ANNUAL SURVEY
As we look forward into 2025, our research over the past year, which has been published in the 18th John Collier Annual Survey on environmental compliance, social responsibility, and good governance (ESG) for South African Golf Courses, and was sent out to clubs in an electronic format, contains many interesting benchmarking pointers, and recommendations for clubs. The findings on compliance levels by golf clubs in South Africa, as set out in the annual survey, indicate a positive uptick, and the survey explores several of the reasons for this positive development.
The recommendations for 2025, originate in part from; the discussions held at the Club Management Association of Southern Africa (CMASA) Conference in August 2024; issues raised by many club management committee members and management teams throughout the year; an expression by management that there is a need for club leadership to be more deliberate about guiding clubs.
The recommendations focus on four areas and the need for; clubs to be clearer about the purpose and role of the board and directors in respect of ESG; more effective board / management committee renewal and composition, including
better levels of skills ‘diversity; a better focus on leadership, dynamics and process; improved levels of strategy review, performance, risk and stakeholder management.
These focus areas are dealt with in greater detail in the annual survey.
Sustainability has emerged as a central theme across various industries, not the least being golf, transcending boundaries, and becoming a key focus for businesses globally. As the world grapples with environmental challenges, social responsibilities, and governance requirements, industries are recognising the need to adopt sustainability practices. In this regard sustainability is not an optional choice for businesses any more, nor for that matter golf – it has become a strategic imperative, shaping the practices and priorities of industries worldwide.
The 18th annual survey’s findings indicate a positive upward trend, and with the examples set out in the annual survey, we look forward to this work providing guidance and assistance to help this positive trend to continue through 2025.

Pieter Verwey, SADGA Non-Executive Director, said: “We are proud to be

Q A
WITH FRANCOIS GELDERBLOM
Golf course superintendent Royal Cape GC
When did you realize that turf management was the industry you want to take further?
Turf management has always felt like a natural fit for me. Growing up, my dad was a course superintendent, and I spent a lot of my weekends and school holidays working alongside the team. I remember being captivated by the scent of freshly cut grass and the peacefulness of early mornings on the golf course. It was there that I truly developed a love for the outdoors and the intricacies of maintaining beautiful, healthy turf.
What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?
The best part of being a golf course superintendent is definitely seeing the results of your hard work and dedication. It’s incredibly rewarding when members recognize and compliment the improvements made to the course. On the flip side, the worst part can be the waiting game—especially when grass needs time to recover after disease outbreaks or mechanical damage. I’m someone who loves to solve problems quickly, so the slower pace of recovery can be a bit frustrating at times.
You are at Royal Cape GC, a course not too far from the coast. Does the coastal weather influence the maintenance, setup, etc.?
Every golf course has its own unique microclimate,
with distinct challenges, even if they’re located close to one another. At Royal Cape, the coastal weather, particularly the southeasterly winds that are common in the Western Cape, has a significant impact on how we maintain and prepare the course. These winds, combined with the unpredictable weather patterns, require us to be adaptable and proactive in our daily setup to ensure the course is in top condition for play.
What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Royal Cape compared to other parts of the country?
At Royal Cape, our climate presents unique challenges, with wet, cold winters and dry, windy summers, all while dealing with a limited water supply. To adapt to these conditions, we’ve chosen kikuyu grass for the tees, fairways, and roughs, as it thrives in our climate. For the greens, we use bent grass due to its resilience in varying climates and its ability to provide smooth, high-quality putting surfaces. This combination allows us to maintain a high standard of playability throughout the changing Western Cape seasons, as managing other grass types would be difficult with such extreme weather patterns.
Does one need different machinery on the course for different types of grasses around the country?
Actually, you don’t need different machinery for different types of grass. Most modern equipment is versatile enough to handle a range of grass varieties. However, adjustments might be made to settings or blades to optimize performance for specific types of grass, but the machinery itself remains the same.
To what extent does course setup affect slow play, and how do you deal with it?
Course setup can certainly influence the pace of play. For example, very fast greens can slow play down as players tend to take more time on the greens to ensure accurate putts. To mitigate this, we maintain our greens at an average speed for daily play, but we adjust and speed them up for tournaments to create a more challenging and exciting experience for competitors.
Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf course to close one day per week for maintenance?
While it would be great to have one day per week dedicated to course maintenance, I think that might be a bit too frequent. In an ideal world, a closure every two weeks would be more feasible, giving the team enough time to conduct necessary maintenance without disrupting the flow of play too often.
Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers, and how do you deal with this?
While maintenance staff and golfers do interact regularly, there’s generally a mutual understanding and respect between both groups. I’ve found that when communication is clear, issues rarely arise. If any concerns come up, I make sure to address them promptly to maintain a smooth working relationship on the course.
How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately versus only a couple of days or a week later?
Repairing divots and pitch marks immediately is crucial because it significantly speeds up recovery time for the grass. When done properly, it allows the turf to heal more quickly, ensuring a smoother and more consistent playing surface. Delaying repairs can lead to longer recovery times and affect course conditions.
People always complain about inconsistent bunkers. How difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers, and do you implement general checks and how?
Maintaining consistent bunkers is one of the more time-consuming aspects of course management, and it certainly presents challenges. Wind can easily blow sand out of certain bunkers, especially those that aren’t sheltered, making consistency difficult. To address this, we regularly check sand levels and redistribute sand as needed. It’s also important to use the right type of sand that’s suited for our local climate, which helps maintain consistency across all the bunkers.
MALCHIRAND WINS WIRE-TO-WIRE IN STANDARD BANK LADIES OPEN HOSTED BY THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN
France’s Lucie Malchirand spoiled herself in her birthday week by winning her maiden Sunshine Ladies Tour title at the Standard Bank Ladies Open hosted by The City of Cape Town at Durbanville Golf Club in February.
Malchirand - who celebrated her 22nd birthday during the second round of the tournament, closed with a level-par 72 to finish on 12 under par, four shots clear of South Africa’s Casandra Alexander and Romy Meekers from The Netherlands who tied for second place on eight under par for the tournament.
Malchirand turned professional in 2021 shortly after winning the Ladies Italian Open as an
amateur, but this week’s victory is her first professional win since joining the Ladies European Tour.
Malchirand says she enjoyed the excitement of the final round.
“I had a great fight with Casandra Alexander at the end. It was nice. I enjoyed it,” said Malchirand.
South Africa’s Lee-Anne Pace finished tied fourth with Czech Tereza Melecka on seven under par. Pace narrowly lost in a playoff to Danielle du Toit during last weekend’s NTT DATA Ladies Pro-Am, which kicked off the 2025 Sunshine Ladies Tour season.
NEW PRO V1 AND PRO V1x GOLF BALLS
MORE SPEED OFF THE TEE, MORE CONTROL WITH THE IRONS AND MORE SPIN WITH THE WEDGES
Building upon decades of breakthrough golf ball innovation and excellence in process, Titleist introduces the new 2025 Pro V1 and Pro V1x, engineered to deliver more speed off the tee, more control with the irons and more spin with the wedges. The new models feature a faster high gradient core, reformulated to maintain low long game spin, increase ball speed and add spin on shots into and around the greens.
The solution for the newest generation of Pro V1 and Pro V1x was found in the chemistry of the high gradient core. Through a complete core reformulation, Titleist engineers were able to steepen the so-called “spin slope,” effectively maintaining low spin off the tee while increasing spin with the scoring clubs. Combine that with a measurable gain in ball speed, and the result is a product that is demonstratively better than its predecessor.
The new models, which have been available in golf shops worldwide since January 25, officially launched on the PGA TOUR last
October at the Shriners Children’s Open, marking the start to year No. 25 for the game’s most trusted and best-selling golf ball models. Five weeks later, new 2025 Pro V1 and Pro V1x had already been brought to the winner’s circle twice on the PGA TOUR, with the winner of the ZOZO Championship gaming 2025 Pro V1x and the champion of The RSM Classic winning in his first week with 2025 Pro V1. More than 40 players on the PGA TOUR had already made the move to the new models by The RSM.
It’s a constant cycle of innovation – one that has no beginning or end – for Titleist Golf Ball R&D that has created a foundation of high performance on which 2025 Pro V1 and Pro V1x will continue to build.
SPECIAL FEATURE - TITLEIST PRO V1 AND PRO V1X
COMPARING PRO V1 AND PRO V1X:
Pro V1 offers the greatest combination of speed, spin and feel in the game, with mid-flight trajectory, low long game spin, maximum short game spin and soft feel. Compared to Pro V1, Pro V1x will fly higher, spin more on full swing shots and have a firmer feel.
2025 PRO V1 AND PRO V1X TECHNOLOGY:
• NEW Pro V1 features a new faster high gradient core, which produces more speed along with increased iron and wedge spin for more control. Its spherically tiled, 388 tetrahedral dimple design optimises distance and delivers a penetrating and consistent flight.
• NEW Pro V1x features a new faster high gradient dual-core, which delivers more speed and increases spin on approach shots for more control. Pro V1x’s spherically tiled 348 tetrahedral dimple design is optimised for high flight with even more consistency.
• Both models are equipped with a speed amplifying high-flex casing layer, which contributes to low long game spin. Pro V1 and Pro V1x’s soft cast Urethane Elastomer Cover provides excellent greenside spin.

NIENABER CRUISES TO SEVEN-SHOT WIN IN NTT DATA PRO-AM
Wilco Nienaber produced the most dominant performance of his career as he won his second NTT DATA Pro-Am title by seven strokes at Fancourt in February.
Nienaber closed out a wire-to-wire victory that began with a 60 in the first round and ended with a 70 on the Montagu course on Sunday for a winning score of 27 under par.
Jean-Paul Strydom finished second on 20 under par with a closing 66. With his victory Nienaber joins an exclusive list of only four players to have won this title twice in its 30-year history, including Nick Price, Darren Fichardt and Oliver Bekker.
This was arguably Nienaber’s finest exhibition of golf considering the hold he had
on this tournament from day one, and the fact that he came through 72 holes with only one bogey. “It’s awesome. You dream of it. It’s nice to have a big lead like I did but you can’t really ever settle. It’s always in the back of your mind to not make a mistake. It’s nice to win early in the year though.”

Over the past decade, golf has become closely tied to the business world, with many corporate leaders using the game to unwind, entertain clients, and foster networking opportunities in a relaxed, personal setting It provides a chance to step away from the pressures of the corporate world and engage in meaningful interactions These days offer a great opportunity to show appreciation to existing clients for their loyalty and continued partnership

Built on steep rolling terrain, through valleys and over hills, Prince’s Grant is a visual feast and an entertainingly varied challenge. Lots of unique looking holes, some in tropical surroundings among the coastal bush, others on higher ground being links-like in appearance.
The clubhouse and lodge is a magnificent double-storey building occupying a prime position with sea views, and bears a striking resemblance to that at Shinnecock Hills in the United States.
A wonderful year-round destination, golfers are lured here in winter by clear, windless days and warm temperatures.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments.
Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too.
Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme
Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome. We look forward to welcoming you soon!

Jeff and Sarah Rutherford, his parents who had flown out from England to support their son on the final day, broke down in tears as they watched him close out a composed final round of 69 in windy conditions to win on 14 under par.

The GolfRSA Tournament Support Programme, a development initiative funded by The R&A, the National Lotteries Commission and the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in South Africa, has been introduced to provide pathways into the sport for golfers from less privileged backgrounds.
The initiative will offer financial support to cover travel, accommodation and subsistence to the players selected for the initial programme so that they can participate in more tournaments to gain experience in the sport.
A total of 40 events on the World Amateur Golf Ranking™, both locally in South Africa
and internationally around the continent of Africa have been identified, will be distributed across the group.
Johndre Ludick, who is competing in the Africa Amateur Championship at Leopard Creek this week, is one of the golfers selected for the programme, which will include 25 golfers (12 women and 13 men), aged 16-23 years old.
“This programme means a lot to me, especially coming from a small town where we don’t have as many opportunities, and so I’m really grateful for the support”, said Ludick.
