Dear editor I have just finished watching Nelly Korda win her first major golf tournament, the KPMG Women’s PGA and in the process reach the number one spot in the Rolex rankings. Now she is the daughter of Petr Korda the former tennis player who at one stage was number two in the world, her sister is Jessica Korda who also plays on the LPGA Tour and I think she has six wins to her name. Their brother Sebastian is a professional tennis player on the ATP with one victory to his name and not to be outdone their mom is Regina Rajchrtova who reached number twenty six in the world as a professional tennis player. Now I ask you this, has there ever been a better sporting family in the history of sport. The Korda family in simply outstanding and the kids all seem to be well grounded, pleasant individuals unlike two other well-known sisters that play professional tennis!
Dear Paul It would be impossible to disagree with that assertion, the Korda family is unbelievable. There have been others, the Barrett brothers (rugby), the Andrettis (auto racing) the Pollocks (cricket) and the Williams sisters (tennis) but no family that I know of has achieved at this level and in two different sporting codes. As I write this Sebastian is in the main draw at Wimbledon and both Nelly & Jessica have made the U.S. Olympic team. They are an inspiration to us all.

How can we improve by knowing these determining factors? Once we have determined the lie, it is easier for us to decide, based on the type of shot that we are able to play (from our list of skills), which shot to play. It is always a good idea to have a high or low shot ready for different situations. But rather make sure to play a shot that you are comfortable with at that given moment, even though it might not be the bestlooking flight or spinning shot.
In this article we discuss the importance of chipping and the determining factors. With this, we hope that we can give you some insight that could help you get the ball to stop closer to the hole, which will allow for easier conversions. Factors determining a good chip shot: • T he lie of the ball • The skill level of the player

We see many players not taking note of the lie who end up visualizing a shot which is completely unnecessary for the situation, for example, playing a high shot from a fluffy lie (ball lying higher on rough), only to end up with a lot of grass between the ball and the clubface at impact, not allowing the ball to carry to the correct landing area, generally leaving them short of the desired target. A simple solution is to use a less lofted club with a landing area closer to the starting point.

WILCO NIENABER, A LONG STORY
T
o begin to grasp the essence of Wilco Nienaber, the ultra-long hitting, 21-year-old South African, you first must note the experience of veteran pro Zack Sucher. Sucher, 34, is not a small man. In fact, he’s the rare PGA Tour pro who has wrestled an alligator. He also can play: A twotime college All-America at University of Alabama-Birmingham, he, like Nienaber, earned his way into the field at Torrey Pines South. So when Sucher played with Nienaber for two rounds at the Palmetto Championship at Congaree – Nienaber’s PGA Tour debut (T14) – it was an odd contrast, indeed. Off the tee, Sucher’s game looked

child-like. “I felt pretty bad about myself, to be honest,” he said after the second round, laughing despite having just missed the cut. “Getting outdriven by 70 yards every hole will make you feel pretty awful. That was pretty much standard. “If I hit it just perfect,” he continued, “it was at least 60 to 65 yards; if I didn’t, it was at least 70 every time. Some of the lines – it was very different golf. I had a 6-iron in, he was chipping a wedge. The amazing part is he doesn’t look like he swings it that hard. It’s very controlled. He just crushes it. I played with a lot of long players; he’s the longest I’ve seen.” ...

He has never used a force-plate, and not until the 2018 British Amateur did someone put him on a launch monitor. “On the range, with one of the reps,” he said. “He couldn’t really believe what he saw, and I had no idea what good numbers were.

From that day I learned a bit more of it, and then when I could afford my own TrackMan I got myself one. “My hands,” he continued, when pressed for the method to his mad speed. “My hands are pretty quick. And my legs are very strong as well. I use the ground really well.” How well? Stories from PING headquarters in Phoenix have him eclipsing 200 mph ball speed. At the 2020 Joburg Open, he hit a 439-yard tee shot, a European Tour record. Although Nienaber works hard on flexibility and strength in order to prevent injury, he shrugs off the notion that he’s worked at being long. “I can definitely get longer,” he said.

ULTIMATE 5 STA We were extremely fortunate to receive an invitation from Marc Lindsey-Rea (Africa Direct Tours and Travel) to go and experience first-hand, the affordable 5-star package (please see opposite page) that they have put together with Savanna Lodge in the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, Oliver’s Guest house in White River Country Estate as well as White River Country club. (see page 29) Having grown up with most holidays based around golf and game viewing, I was really looking forward to this experience. Never did I think it would be this good, being treated like royalty for five days had never crossed my mind. From the moment my wife and I arrived at Oliver’s we were bowled over. ‘This was a completely different round of golf ‘
This 5-star lodge has the most spacious, luxurious rooms you could wish for. We were privately hosted by Marc and Mike from Africa direct, both renowned South African guides, for the duration of our two-night stay at Oliver’s. The restaurant here has been ranked in the top 100 in South Africa and you can choose delicious mouth-watering dishes from their seasonal a-la-carte menu which are complemented with a selection of fine South African wines found in their well-stocked wine cellar. The golf course was in great condition and Marc, who is also a top amateur golfer, hosted us on -course accompanied by Barry Broadbent, golf director at Whiteriver CC. This was a completely different round of golf and I can recommend this to any golfer out there. The round is all about having fun but also teaching the golfer proper course management which I think all golfers need to apply more. After a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Oliver’s it was time to move to our next destination. Savanna Private Game Reserve is located in the Western sector of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve and

WHITE RIVER COUNTRY CLUB White River Country Club is a Par 71, 18 hole Gary Player designed course set along the banks of the White river. It is a true country club layout that challenges the lower handicap golfer, whilst offering fair playability for the higher handicap golfer.
The Country Club is situated within the White River Country Estate, which consists of 322 residential houses. It consists of the golf course, tennis courts, a squash court, cricket field and a petanque court. The Clubhouse consists of a bar, restaurant, function room, swimming pool with braai facilities and a veranda with beautiful views overlooking the golf course.

As with most golf residential estates, the majority of home owners do not play golf and are not obliged to have membership to the golf club. A key focus of MWG has been the course and the conditioning thereof. The implementation of a dedicated agronomic plan, which includes bi-annual hollow-tining practices, preventative pesticides and fungicide applications and fertilizers that are matched to the Lowveld’s unique climate, have seen the course go from strength to strength. Particular attention has been given to improve the greens. Apart from the above, work has been done on the aesthetics of the course, focusing on fairway cutting lines and definition, levelling of tee boxes and

orld Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5 June each year and stimulates awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and public action. This day is the UN’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since its inception in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.
Above all, WED is the “people’s day” for doing something to take care of the Earth. That “something” can have a local, national or global focus. Each WED is organized around a theme that focuses attention on a particular environmental concern, the theme for 2021 is ‘ecosystem restoration’. Each year those golf club’s data which was included in the 14th John Collier Annual Survey is assessed for environmental compliance and

The winner for 2020-21 is LEOPARD CREEK situated near to Malelane in Mpumulanga Province of South Africa and Special Mention Awards to Montagu Golf Club in the Western Cape and Zwartkop Golf Club in Gauteng. The reviewers were really impressed with the level of detail and standards set in terms of good governance and environmental compliance by the LEOPARD CREEK team and it is fitting that on WED the club was appropriately recognised. 2020 was a year with multiple crises, including a global pandemic, but what LEOPARD CREEK has done well is to link the practical application of ecosystem restoration and focus on its relationship with nature, and then take specific steps to move from crisis to healing: and in so doing, recognize that the restoration of nature is imperative for the survival of our planet and the human race. LEOPARD CREEK’s initiatives have contributed to fight the climate crisis and will help to prevent the potential loss of many species. Their activities will also help to enhance food security, water supply and livelihoods while putting the club in a position to move towards a carbon neutral environment.

EPIC 8-HOLE PLAYOFF AT TRAVELERS CHAMPIONSHIP It was a record-tying showdown between Harris English and Kramer Hickok at the Travelers Championship in June. Their eight-hole playoff tied the PGA Tour record for the longest sudden-death playoff ever completed on the Tour. After they tied with pars on the first seven playoff holes, English ended it with a 5-foot birdie putt to earn his second win of the season.

In light of that record, we take a look at the longest playoff in PGA Tour history, the 11-hole playoff in the 1949 Motor City Open, which ended with co-champions after it was too dark to continue. 1949 Motor City Open (11 holes): Lloyd Mangrum and Cary Middlecoff declared co-winners by mutual agreement due to darkness The previous year’s Motor City Open went to a playoff between Ben Hogan and

WILLIAMS CLAIMS SEASON-OPENING VICTORY AT TREVOSE Chris Williams fought off the challenge of Major Champions and former Ryder Cup stars to secure a three-stroke victory at the Farmfoods European Legends Links Championship at Trevose Golf & Country Club. The South African carded a closing two under par round of 70 to reach nine under par, three shots ahead of 2019 John Jacobs Trophy winner Phillip Price in second place on six under par, with 1999 Open Champion Paul Lawrie and 2018 Ryder Cup Captain Thomas Bjørn a shot further back in a tie for third place on five under par.
“It just feels amazing,” he said. “At my age you never know how many more you’ve got in the bag but to have done it at 62, I’m really pleased. “This is probably the best, the reason being is because I have never won a single tournament in Europe or England. I’ve won in Asia, the Middle East and South Africa but not once in this part of the world, so this is a big milestone for me.”
The 62-year-old’s victory on the Cornish coastline is his first in Europe in a career spanning over 40 years and he therefore rates it at his most impressive triumph.

1. Where were you born and what schools did you attend? I was born in Bellville, Cape Town. I attended Webner Street Primary and Ravensmead High School 2. Did you come from a sporting background? Sporting relations, my dad played rugby. 3. When did you realise that cricket was the sport you wanted to take further? I happened to play rugby and cricket at school and cricket really took preference in my matric year when I got a call up to play for The Western Province senior team. 4. Who has been the most influential person in your cricket career and why? My mentors were Hannes Adams and George Van Oordt, they played a massive roll in my life. They gave me proper guidance and motivated me to stay true to the course. 5. You retired at a fairly young age with a phenomenal record, what were the reasons behind this?

I had a phenomenal career and was planning to retire in the UK, but due to covid it was cut short. Because of that I feel I still have a year or two left in me to play and I have committed to Western Province to help with some of the younger players as well. 6. You were the fastest to 50 and 100 test wickets, what kept you motivated? Receiving your test cap will always be a massive achievement. I have always thrived to be the best at what I do and I certainly did my best every time, given the opportunity. 7. Who are the toughest bowlers and batsmen you’ve played against? Toughest batter would be Micheal Clarke and bowler Mitchell Johnson. 8. Most sportsman have nicknames, did you ever have one and where did it come from? Nickname is Vern, shortened from Vernon. 9. Your funniest moment on a cricket field?

My short term goal is to help our next generation of cricketers and longer term to help motivate all youth of this country to be the best they can be.
12. What advice would you give to youngsters today as far as sport is concerned? Equip yourself with the knowledge and just go out and do your best and enjoy everything you do.
11. You are involved in the Tygerberg hospital children’s trust as well as being one of the founding Tutu Tygers, can you tell us more about this? I got involved with the Tutu Tigers based on the fact that I am from Ravensmead and I really want to make sure that we provide a proper health care for generations to come.
G ETTING ON T O GOLF • When did you start playing golf? Been playing golf for around 6 years now. • What is your current handicap? My handicap is 1.4. • Are you a member of a golf club? Yes, I am a member at Pearl Valley Golf Club.
• If you could pick a golf swing, who’s would it be? Would love to have Louis Oosthuisen’s golf swing. • Have you ever had a hole-in-one? Yes I have had one- hole- in one at Mt Edgecombe Golf Club in Durban. • What would be your ideal fourball? My ultimate fourball would be Tiger, Barrack Obama and Will Smith.
• Which is your favorite golf course and why? Pearl Valley, it is one of the most amazing courses I have played and I really love the atmosphere and the members.

HIGGO, BEZUIDENHOUT QUALIFY FOR TOKYO GAMES The International Golf Federation announced the qualifiers for the men’s competition for the Olympic Games in Tokyo, and South Africa’s representatives are Garrick Higgo and Christiaan Bezuidenhout. The top 15 players qualified, with a limit of four golfers per country that can qualify this way. The United States is the only country with four players. The remaining spots went to the highest-ranked players from countries that did not already have two golfers qualified.

The men’s tournament takes place from July 29 to August 1. Higgo, who is ranked 38th on the Official World Golf Ranking, is the 17th qualifier on the list, and Bezuidenhout, 46th in the world, is the 20th player on the IGF list. Should either of those players withdraw, the next players on the reserve reallocation list are Branden Grace, Daniel van Tonder, Erik van Rooyen, Dylan Frittelli and Brandon Stone. Stone, together with Jaco van Zyl, was an Olympian at the 2016 games in

WILLIAMS LOOKS BACK AT ROOKIE SEASON WITH OPTIMISM making a living in the process. “The Standard Bank Pro-Am presents unique and exciting opportunities for the ladies,” adds Williams. “I’m from Cape Town and we don’t have any professional events down in Cape Town so I will fly up for these tournament at any given time. I can’t afford all the IGT Tour events while the Sunshine Ladies season is off, so a series like this is really helpful.

ape Town’s Cassidy Williams says while her Sunshine Ladies Tour rookie season was a learning curve with a lot of ups and downs, she is grateful for the opportunity to continue honing her skills through the Standard Bank Pro-Am Series.
“My rookie season was all about enjoying the experience,” she says, “learning lessons and exposing myself to tournament environments. I learned so much about the game and about myself, so, as tough as the season was, I still learned a lot.” While the 24-year-old Stellenbosch Golf Club player admits to her struggles in her first season as a touring professional, she is also very grateful for having the Standard Bank Pro-Am Series to play in while the regular Sunshine Ladies Tour season hasn’t begun. The Series is aimed at driving the development of female golfers from grassroots level while also empowering talented professionals, such as Williams, by creating more playing opportunities for them to keep their competitive edge while

“We now have something to look forward to because you know you will be able to make a little bit of money. Standard Bank has made that first step that we have been longing for because for us players, all we can do is to speak on interviews about the support we need and play our best. It’s encouraging to see corporates coming in with such great support.” Williams has played in two of the first three events in this seven-tournament series and while she didn’t record her best finish in the last event at Parkview Golf Club (13-overpar to finish T21), she has a lot to look forward to in this series. The next event will be played at the former home of the South African Open Championship, Glendower Golf Club, towards the end of July and Williams intends to deliver an improved performance there. Whatever the results will be and wherever she finishes in this series at the end of it all, the Standard Bank Pro-Am Series was launched at the right time for young players like Williams and will benefit many more in the future.

alancing your nutrients in the soil is a wonderful challenge and you will certainly reap the benefits of doing so. An annual soil test is a wonderful guideline & even better when you do leaf testing to see what nutrients are available to the plant.
The plant needs your basic cations calcium, magnesium, potassium & sodium to be in balance. Sulphur is important to turf, however you do not want this element too high in poorly draining soils. The micronutrients are also a key part of the web. With the soil test results we can plan the nutrition for the 6-12 months ahead and tweak it as we get the leaf results on a regular basis. Once we have established the nutrition programme we tie in the integrated pest

Our mystery golfer was born in Houston, Texas on December 27, 1933 and passed away in his home town on October 5, 1997. He was assistant club pro to Claude Harmon at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York. He began playing regularly on the PGA tour in 1960, and in that year earned his first professional win at the Sam Snead Festival. A few hours after winning the 1965 PGA Championship, his third child, Tony, was born. His close friend Arnold Palmer called his 1965 PGA victory “one of the happiest moments of my life”. He played in the 1965 Ryder Cup, finishing his six matches with a 4-2 record. He was the appointed non-playing captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 1981. He served as a golf analyst for ABC from 1972 until 1991. After his death his children scattered his ashes around the various courses that meant so much to him during his playing days.
