LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader.

To the Editor Why is it that Phil Mickelson can never be seen to do anything wrong? His latest infringement at the U.S. Open is yet another example of this. Well known to be an avid gambler, back in 2000, he formed a betting syndicate that placed a NZ$26,000 wager on the Baltimore Ravens to win the Super Bowl and he collected a share of NZ$760,000 for his troubles. His hustling matches on the Tuesdays before tournaments are legendary. At the Open at St Andrews in 2010, he challenged Nick Watney - who had never played the course before - to a $1,000 duel and then demanded on the 18th green to receive his winnings in pounds. This pattern took on a darker side however when a US federal investigation linked him to an insider-trading scheme. He had to forfeit NZ$1.2 million, plus interest, after taking advice from Billy Walters, the most successful sports gambler in America, to buy and sell stock in Dean Foods in order to repay a debt to Walters. Ironically in 2012, Mickelson complained about excessive use of mobile phones at Jack Nicklaus’s Memorial Tournament by sending Tour commissioner Tim Finchem a message in the middle of the fairway, from… his mobile phone. It seems that the top players are protected and that they can (in the eyes of the Tour)

4

do no wrong. To be honest this seems to happen in other sports as well but nonetheless the Tour needs to grow a set and take action against those that are out of line! Regards Neil Patterson

Dear Neil

Thank you for writing in to us. The U.S. Open incident is polarising people at the moment. Some top professionals are saying that he should have been disqualified as he intentionally played the ball whilst it was moving. Others state that he was playing smart and within the rules. My take is that (although many players may feel like doing something similar on occasions) none actually do it. Simply because it is against the spirit of the game. Phil Mickelson should have been disqualified. As for the insider trading incident I believe that was a personal matter and he was exonerated. The same goes for betting, some of us enjoy it and some don’t. Is Phil Mickelson treated differently because of who he is? Undoubtedly! Regards

I’m not sure there is one. They are all a bit different. I get up shortly after 5am. We open our shop at 6.30am for the morning field. I tend to see three main aspects to my role. Firstly overseeing the golf on the course for the day, whether it be a members competition day, corporate day or social golf. My team do a great job of getting on top of the days, ensuring the bookings run smoothly and the players’ needs are taken care of. Then there is the retail aspect of my role. We have a well-stocked shop at Kloof – probably one of the busiest on-course shops in KZN so we get lots of enquiries for the latest equipment and we run quite a lot of supplier demo days at the club. So we have to make sure products are always in-stock and customer orders are placed. We are lucky to be one of two Indie Golf Stores and this gives us an excellent back

When did you qualify as a PGA Professional ? April 2016. What made you choose this career ? It was something I was keen to do since I was about 7 years old. My parents own a club in the UK and we grew up surrounded by golf. Although I had to wait until I was 12 before I was ‘allowed’ to play on the course. The golf course wasn’t a place for young children back then! Has it always been golf for you? Yes – Although I only started with the PGA when I was 46, as a child I was very lucky to have facilities on my door step and a mum who dragged me along to keep her company on to the practice range. Before I came to South Africa I managed a club for a few years in the UK. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour ? No, not really. Although I loved golf I realized the risk and the importance of getting a ‘proper job’. I did the Honors degree, diploma and corporate job – golf was a hobby. Describe a typical work day for a PGA Club Professional.

up for our customers. Other aspects of my day are much the same as most professionals, club repairs, lessons, committee meetings, staff rotas, emails and phones! Our phones are frantic – we have 3 of them and they often all ring at the same time. The days are long, varied and fun! At this time of the year I generally leave around 5pm – home for a glass of wine! With a lot of early morning mist in the Kloof area, how do you manage your morning and afternoon fields? It’s really not that bad! There’s the occasional issue – in which case I encourage the players to have their half way breakfast before they play and we operate a grab and go to catch up the time so as not to impact the afternoon field. At times I think players think I’m responsible for the weather!! Being only 15km from Durban there is quite a big climate and altitude difference, what challenges do you face that the coastal courses don’t ? Well we’ve mentioned the mist in the early morning – it can come later in the day too so on the odd occasion our members comps might be reduced to 9 holes. We all have our umbrellas

and an extra layer in the car. Kloof can be all 4 seasons in one day. Our members know if they have to come off the course for the weather, no sooner have they got to the bar, the weather could be clear and they could be going back out on the course. We rarely have strong winds up here unlike the coast. With South Africa going through a really dry period, how do you manage your water situation? We have 3 dams fed by storm water and over the years we have extended them when possible. We are about to repair one of the dam walls this week and we will use the opportunity to dig out some

of the silt to maximize our capacity. We have also changed our watering policy and give our greens less water than in the past and use more water retention products. Our green keeper does a great job. Equally drainage is good (we’re at the top of a hill) so we are never water logged like some of our neighboring courses. 9. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? Haha! As long as the member thinks I agree that’s all that matters. I’d like to think I have a good relationship with most of the members and they know they can always talk to me or one of my staff with any concerns and we will do our best to find a solution for them. 10. With consumers being careful on how they spend their money these days, are you finding other ways besides golf to attract people to the club? We have an active social scene for our members and we do well with birthday parties and the like. We have a number of really good local music bands so we try to incorporate this type of thing with golf days and competitions to give added value, a bit of fun and a reason to linger longer. There is more we could be doing and we have some great ideas just around the corner. 11. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at

Kloof Country Club ? We are seeing an increase in the use of carts which I believe does help the older player. We rack up our monitoring of the field on busy days to deal with any issues quickly. Like most clubs we are encouraging ready golf and I would quite like us to try ‘hopping’ at halfway. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life ? Yes it does and yes it does! What are your short & long term goals? I’d like my staff to get more attention and training so they can feel more confident when dealing with any enquiry. Personally I would like to help more people with their golf, especially the ladies and to keep up with CPD through the PGA . I’m also considering taking some CMASA courses. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Other than golf I love to run and gym. I recently discovered trial running. We are lucky with the weather here so it’s something I can do all year round. Do you still get time to play ? Not as much as I would like. As a female, non-tour player, there isn’t much to play in – without competing against the men. So most of my golf is club golf with the members. If I’m lucky once a week.

Not just a six pack…

ore often than not, it’s become more aesthetically pleasing to build a pack of abs that look great rather than serve their function. The core is in most cases understood to be the front abdominal muscles and if these muscles are visible, you are said to be strong. I’ve seen it in so many instances where a large muscle, as much as it looks impressive, does not necessarily mean it serves its full function or is strong. The core is a complex series of muscles which extend far beyond your abs. The core includes the abdominal, back and glute muscles. Your core is a dynamic stabilizer in all three planes of movement, it allows for transfers of force from one muscle to another as well as a ‘shock absorber’ for injury. Stability refers to the body’s ability to control movement. When we look at the golf swing for instance and the importance of effective functional movement, it is imperative so learn how to maintain a good spine angle, thorax to pelvis separation, generate power from the hips and stabilise the spine and pelvis respectively. Core stability reduces the risk of injury commonly found in golf and improves sporting performance. Lower back pain and injury are often a result of movement restrictions in the upper spine and hips. Once movement is limited in these regions, the lower spine is forced to produce rotation in the golf swing. The result is at best reduced distance, accuracy and consistency in shots and at worst, injury. A more effective approach is to train stability in the lumbar spine and mobility in the hips and upper spine.

and glute medius). The main function of the glutes during a golf swing is to stabilize the pelvis. Stability in this case encompasses strength, balance, and muscle endurance. When we allow the glutes to fire correctly, it has an immediate effect on improved hip mobility and rotation of the hips during the downswing. It is important to learn to activate deep core muscles first, training specific movement tweaks that stabilize from the spine and pelvis and thus allowing bigger muscle groups to support such movements. When this is done incorrectly we see compensatory patterns (like a sway or a slide) and muscles fatiguing prematurely as well as limitations in range of motion in a movement plane. The exercises below will help you train the movement of engaging your core and glutes effectively. TA 4 Point (1 set – 10 reps) Start: Hands underneath shoulders and knees underneath hips. Movement: No movement. Action: Draw in pelvic floor and belly button into spine with 30 % effort. (Cue: tuck in tail) Progression: Once you have mastered the exercises above then practice your pelvic floor and TA activation in other positions such as sitting or standing.

A progression in terms of exercises is best to develop the core correctly and provide the golfer with the greatest benefit from their training. It is important to focus on teaching the glutes to fire (glute maximus

Single leg bridge (2 sets – 10 reps each side) Start: Straighten one leg so that your thighs are parallel. Movement: Use the pelvic tilt action, curling your spine and continue it slowly lifting your hips off the floor (Cue: Move one vertebra at a time).

Progression: pelvic tilt to the side in same position. 4 Point opposite arm and leg (1 set – 10 reps each side) Start: Knees underneath hips and hands underneath shoulders. Movement: Straighten one arm above your head and at the same time straighten the opposite leg. (i.e. Left arm, right leg)

Clams (2 sets – 15 reps each side) Lie on your side with your hips and shoulders in a straight line. • Bend your knees so that your thighs are at a 90-degree angle to your body. • Rest your head on your top arm as it is stretched out overhead, or bent, whichever is more comfortable. • Make sure your neck is long so that your head is not tipped back or tucked forward. • Bend your top arm and place your hand on the floor in front of your chest for extra stability. • Stack your hips directly on top of each other vertically. Do the same with your shoulders. • Use your deep abdominal muscles to keep this alignment throughout the exercise. • Keep your big toes together as you slowly rotate your leg in the hip socket so that the top knee opens. • Open the knee only as far as you can go without disturbing the alignment of your hips. • Slowly bring your knee back to the start position. Teen Lamprecht claims historic Irish victory Last month the crowds at County Louth got an eyeful of that same blend of determination and shot-making when he became the youngest champion and the first foreign winner in the 76-year history of the East of Ireland Amateur Open Championship. Lamprecht carded rounds of 66, 68 and 69 to take a one-shot lead into the final round. During his final trip around the Baltray Links, the GolfRSA National Squad player dropped shots and surrendered the lead. Each time he bounced back with a birdie. t is rare to see a young golfer capitalise on good shots, but also rebound after poor play. That is why golf pundits should keep an eye on South African Christo Lamprecht in the future.

Par at the final hole would have been enough to seal victory, but Lamprecht hit a spectacular chip-and-putt for birdie. A final round one-under 71 saw him win wire-to-wire on 14-under 174, with a two-stroke victory over Irish hopeful Mark Power.

The 17-year-old George golfer demonstrated maturity beyond his years to become the youngest-ever winner of the Sanlam SA Amateur at Humewood in 2017.

“When I won the Sanlam SA Amateur Championship, it was the biggest achievement of my career, but this is right up there,” said Lamprecht, who turned 17 in January.

What was your reaction when you heard AB de Villiers recently retired ? Not surprised at all by the decision to retire. AB tried to retire 18 months before but Cricket SA begged him to stay. SPECIAL FEATURE - KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

How is your GRIP on golf? by Francois Marx

Your hands are the only connection you have to the golf club. Besides having a good grip, the thickness of those grips can play a significant role.

D

uring a recent trial by Eric Alpenfels and Dr Bob Christina, they analyzed 1,440 swings and discovered that 9 out of 10 golfers play with the wrong-sized grips. In that finding a perfect match can make your distance longer and more accurate—without having to change your swing. The Conventional Wisdom: Unless your hands are unusually big or small, you can get away with playing standard-size grips. You can also use a static fitting chart to match grip size to your hand size.

a grip size that was different than their measured grip size in the pre-test. •

After hitting shots, 22 of the 24 players (92%), preferred a grip size that was different than their measured grip size.

CONCLUSION: Determining grip size through standard static fitting procedures isn’t a very good predictor of the grip size that golfers prefer. 2. Neither Does Relying on Your Feel Sense

New Theory: Finding the correct grip size has little to do with the size of your hands, or even personal preference. It has everything to do with the dynamics of your swing.

21 of the 24 golfers (88%), had standard-sized grips on their own 5-irons, yet less than half of these players (10 of 21), were measured for standard-sized grips.

Test protocol: Twenty-four golfers (ranging in handicap from +1 to 7) hit their own 5-iron and five identical 5-irons (Titleist AP2s with Dynamic Gold S shafts), each with a different-sized grip (undersized, standard, slightly larger standard, midsized and jumbo). All markings were covered to prevent any previous size bias. While blindfolded, each golfer was asked to choose the grip they preferred simply by holding each club in their hands. They were then measured for grip size using a fitting chart.

Only slightly more than half (11 of 21), preferred the standard-size grips on their 5-iron after hitting test shots with the other 5 test clubs.

After sufficiently warming up with their own 5-iron, each golfer hit two practice shots out to a target on the range, followed by 10 additional shots that were measured on a Trackman launch monitor. This was repeated for each club (assigned in random order), concluding with their own 5-iron, which served as a control club. The Results: After tallying the results of the pre-hit tests and the data collected by the launch monitor, three things were certain. 1. Hand Measurements Don’t Work •

CONCLUSION: If you’re playing off-the-rack clubs with standard-sized grips, there’s only a 50% chance that these grips match what you’d be measured for in a static fitting, or what you’d actually prefer. 3. You’re Playing the Wrong Grips! •

Only 5 of 24 golfers (21%), hit their best shots with the grip size that matched their measured grip size in terms of left/right accuracy. These weren’t always the grip size the golfers preferred, either.

Only 3 of these golfers (13% total), hit the best shots with the grip size that matched their measured grip size in terms of distance control.

Only 1 golfer (4%), hit the ball straighter and with greater distance control with the grip size that matched their measured grip size.

CONCLUSION: Your grips are costing you at least 5 strokes per round.

SPECIAL FEATURE - KNOWLEDGE IS POWER How to Use These Findings: The only way to know what size grips to use is to experiment with as many different sizes as possible. When you decide to make the change, ask the professional who’s doing your fitting the following questions. The answers will go a long way toward making sure the job gets done right. 1. What size grips are currently on my set? Part of a good trial is comparing your performance with new grips against what you brought to the fitting. 2. Can I hit the same club outfitted with different-size grips? That’s how we performed the test, and it’s the only way to accurately test your performance with each size. Make sure swingweights are consistent — larger grips will tend to make the clubhead feel too light. 3. Can I measure my swings with each grip on a launch monitor?

It’s hard to gauge your results if you’re hitting into a net, so make sure the shop has a launch monitor or other shot-tracking device. It’s important to base your decision solely on shot data. Remember—the right size grips won’t leave a mark. You shouldn’t see much wear and tear at all—even after a few rounds and practice sessions—because glove breakdown is a result of the grip moving around in your hands, which you get when your hold is incorrect or your grip is the wrong size. If you tend to wear down the part of the glove covering the base of your thumb or anywhere in your palm then you’re not holding the handle in your fingers. If you’re wearing down your glove where you hold the handle in your fingers, it’s a sign that your grip is too small. The same goes for your right hand. You shouldn’t see any black marks or even blisters if you’ve nailed your grip and grip size.

Happy Golfing!

Rebula seals

GolfRSA double in The Amateur

J

ovan Rebula became the first South African in more than half a century to break the curse of the Royals and win the 123rd Amateur Championship. Rebula sealed the double for GolfRSA when he defeated Irishman Robin Dawson in the 36-hole final at Royal Aberdeen on Saturday, just four days after fellow GolfRSA National Squad player Wilco Nienaber became the first South African to take the Leading Amateur honour in the 36-hole stroke play qualifier. Prior to Rebula’s triumph, Bobby Cole was the only South African to claim the coveted Amateur Championship title, winning at Carnoustie in 1966, and since then South Africa has lost out in four subsequent finals. In 1980, David Suddards lost at Royal Porthcawl. Ben Fouchee lost at Royal Porthcawl in 1988, Trevor Immelman at Royal St. George’s in 1997 and Zander Lombard at Royal Portrush in 2014. With a combination of exquisite bunker shots, brilliant chips and a handful of clutch putts in windy conditions at the Balgownie Links, the 20-year-old Rebula ended the winning drought when he beat Dawson 3 & 2 – the same winning margin that won Bobby Cole the coveted trophy at Carnoustie in 1966. “I’m very happy and very pleased with myself, the way I handled myself this week,” said the Auburn University student, who earned a berth in The Open Championship at Carnoustie next month, as well as trips to the Masters and the U.S. Open in 2019. “I’ve really been playing solid and haven’t made many mistakes this week. It’s a huge honour for me to call

July | August 2018

myself the Amateur champion. It’s something out of this world.” Rebula’s accuracy off the tee and the calm of fellow GolfRSA National Squad player Matt Saulez on the bag proved a lethal combination as Dawson struggled with distance control. A flurry of poor shots from the Irishman netted Rebula a 1-up lead into the final 18 holes. “I played really well in the morning and got it to 3-up through seven holes or so,” said the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member. “I felt unbelievably calm and I really just enjoyed it out there. Matt and I talked about keeping the hammer down and the momentum going. Having him on the bag over the last few rounds was a great experience. I can’t thank him enough. “Walking to the first tee this morning, I saw my old teammate Kyle McClatchie, who was in the GolfRSA Squad with me and is playing on the pro circuit now. Kyle had a tournament here in Scotland and swung by to watch me play. Rebula accomplished something his famous uncle, four-time Major champion Ernie Els, couldn’t accomplish in three tries. Els played a part in the final at Royal Porthcawl in 1988, when he caddied for Fouche. “I have a tight relationship with my uncle Ernie and he is always motivating me,” Rebula said. “He said this would open doors for me and told me to go out there, to have fun and grab the opportunity with both hands. He’s awesome. Just a great human being.”

Superior Son seals Nomads SA Girls double

P

int-sized Woo-Ju Son showed the grit, determination and endless talent of a future world-beater as she held her nerve brilliantly down the stretch to go wire-to-wire for a second successive time in the Nomads SA Girls Championship last month. Son closed with a one-under 71 to triumph on five-under-par 71 at Orkney GC. The 17-year-old CC Johannesburg golfer edged out Ekurhuleni’s Caitlyn Macnab by two shots, while fellow Gauteng golfer Symone Henriques vaulted to third on 216, courtesy of an eagle-birdie finish. Twelve months ago, South Africa’s leading junior raced to a seven-shot victory earn Son a spot in the starting line-up of the prestigious Duke of York Young Champion Trophy in Britain. “I’ll be heading to Castle Stuart Golf Links in September, but I have to admit that booking the return trip was much harder work this year,” said the smiling Son. “I am extremely happy and relieved to have won. I struggled with a very cold putter in the second round. It was extremely frustrating at times and I am sure I used my entire quota of patience.

44

“Caitlyn put a lot of pressure on me. She played extremely well, especially on the back nine, but the putter came to the party today and I mae some clutch putts for pars to keep the lead.” “This is a championship every junior girl in South Africa dreams of winning and I’m really proud to be a two-time champion of the most popular junior tournament in the country. I speak for everyone when I thank Nomads South Africa for sponsoring the Nomads SA Girls and for supporting junior golf for so many years.”

GolfRSA National Squad trio named for Eisenhower Trophy

G

olfRSA National Squad members Jovan Rebula, Wilco Nienaber and Matt Saulez will represent South Africa in the Eisenhower Trophy at the 2018 World Amateur Team Championship in Maynooth, Ireland in September. In announcing the team last month, South African Golf Association President Geoff Taylor said high expectations would follow the trio to Carton House. “We are really pleased with the team we selected,” Taylor said. “All three players produced good results over the past 12 months, and particularly during the recent GolfRSA National Squad Tour to Britain and Ireland.

“Not only is Jovan our highest ranked amateur in the world, but over and above his outstanding victory in The Amateur, he has been very successful on the collegiate circuit in the United States. “Wilco lived up to his number one ranking with a runner-up finish in the Brabazon Trophy and once again underlined his potential when he became the first South African to win the stroke play qualifier in The Amateur since qualification was introduced in 1983. “Matt has maintained his number three ranking here at home and he consistently performed well in the events abroad, with a tie for seventh in the Irish Amateur Open among his highlights during the GolfRSA National Squad Tour. “We are satisfied that we have selected the strongest team possible to represent South Africa in Ireland and they will be heading to Carton House with form and confidence.” The Eisenhower Trophy format is 72 holes of stroke play with 18 holes a day over four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores by the three players from each team constitutes

the team score for that round. The four-day total is the team’s score for the championship. GolfRSA Manager Golf Operations Eden Thompson, who accompanied the GolfRSA National Squad on the first leg of the UK Tour to Ireland, will manage the team at Carton House.

hen describing golf courses and holiday destinations the term “hidden gem” very often becomes a cliché. However on our recent visit to the KZN south coast it became apparent that this area is a veritable diamond mine and that “hidden gems” lie everywhere along this stretch of what really is a golfing heaven.

The south coast is home to South Africa’s first residential golf estate (Selborne) and many of the great characters of the game (Derek James, Fred Beaver and Trevor Wilkes to name but a few) are south coast locals. Quite simply the KZN south coast has “staying power” and it is this endearing quality coupled with the value for money it offers, that makes it such an irresistible destination.

The birth of South Africa’s first residential golf estate

Upon his return to South Africa, he began to transform his farm into a golfing residential estate. In 1985 Denis’ dream of a luxury golfing complex at Selborne started to become a reality. In May 1987 the course was opened for play, and the very first residential golf estate in South Africa was born. Old converted railway carriages were used as the first change rooms and halfway house. The homestead turned into a Lodge with seven bedrooms and in due course a new clubhouse was built. The Golf Committee used the Lodge, the current Hotel, as the Members Club House, which operated until January 1989, when the new Club House was completed.

D

uring 1979, the magnificent Selborne Park estate, owned by the widow of the sugar magnate Vernon Crookes, came up for sale and Denis Barker bought the estate for his family home and the running of his Fayden Jersey Stud farm. In 1982 Denis led the South African delegation to the World Jersey Cattle Conference in Canada, after which they toured the USA. While visiting friends in Waterloo, Iowa he played golf at a golf housing estate for the first time which inspired his vision to create Selborne.

50

Denis Barker has sadly passed on and ownership of the estate and golf course is now held by the homeowners. The hotel is run by First Group. The floods of 2008 and 2010 did considerable damage to the course however with new drainage and improved management practices it has recovered completely and once again Selborne can be considered to be the “Augusta of South Africa”. South African golfing legend Trevor Wilkes (pictured on the left with Louis Naude from SA Golf Trader) is the golf professional at Selborne. Trevor is a lifelong honorary member of the PGA of SA.

The Greatest Shoal on Earth

I

f you find yourself on the KZN south coast over the months of June and July you might be tempted to put down the golf clubs for an hour or two and make your way down to the beach. If the conditions are right you will witness an annual phenomenon sparked by the entry of large shoals of sardines into the waters of southern KwaZulu-Natal during the winter months. Although the great bulk of South Africa’s sardine stock is to be found in the cooler Cape waters, each winter a small proportion of the stock moves eastwards up the Wild Coast. These shoals take advantage of cool water on the continental shelf of the east coast that occurs seasonally as a narrow band between

July | August 2018

the coast and the warm, southward flowing Agulhas Current. In terms of biomass, researchers estimate that the sardine run could rival East Africa’s great wildebeest migration. The shoals are often more than 7 km long, 1.5 km wide and 30 metres deep and are clearly visible from spotter planes or from the surface. It is a time of plenty for all as humans join sharks, gamefish, marine mammals and birds in a feeding orgy. At this time of year you should also consider playing in the highly popular Sardine Run Golf Tournament. Hosted by Scottburgh Golf Club in association with Umkomaas and Selborne golf clubs this annual event is always a huge success.

red Beaver has been the only PGA professional at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club since it opened its doors in September 1982. In the early days Fred worked at the Circle Country Club in Durban, then he moved to Empangeni in Zululand and then back to Circle as the official club pro and owner of his own shop. In March of 1980 he moved to the Royal Swazi Sun but then the Wild Coast offer came up and the rest like they say is history!

Fred was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, where he spent his formative years playing as much golf as possible and getting into and out of trouble with none other than Tony Johnstone. “We were juveniles on the verge of delinquency” says Fred with a laugh. He also played junior golf with Nick Price and Dennis Watson as well as Mark McNulty. The highlight of Fred’s junior career was winning the Rhodesian Boys strokeplay and matchplay titles in 1973. Fred Beaver enjoys life to its fullest and his warm personality and love for the game play a large role in ensuring that the Wild Coast Sun Country Club remains as popular as ever. S pecial F eature – M izuno J PX 900 Tour

The unbelievable story behind the irons used by Brooks Koepka to win the U.S. Open TWICE

T

he story begins sometime in the second half of 2014. Mizuno was laying plans to shuffle the deck on its iron line-up. Like a good bit of the equipment industry, the company’s catalogue had grown bloated. An effort was underway to slim its iron count from 8 to 6 while tweaking its release schedules such that new MP and JPX product would launch in alternating years. A reasonable plan, but Mizuno had a problem. The previous JPX released featured the JPX 850. It was a good iron, but Mizuno willingly concedes it lacked the connection to better players that is synonymous with its MP line. As a consequence of its lack of Tour play, JPX didn’t bring the same credibility to retail. The bulk of retail iron dollars are spent in the

66

game-improvement category, and while the tour heritage of Mizuno’s MP line is undeniable, that rich history had done little to boost JPX sales. Mizuno wasn’t moving the needle where the real money is made. If JPX was going to be successful in the U.S., Mizuno would need to expand its reach beyond the game-improvement space. The line-up would need a shallow cavity back offering; something akin to the MP-62, MP-64, or MP-59. So, a plan was hatched. It called for the literal reshaping of the JPX line. The goal was to make a new and different kind of JPX, get it in play on tour, and bring it to retail as a tour-validated product. If it all came together as planned, that validation would trickle down to the game-improvement space where it would help boost JPX irons sales.

www.sagolftrader.co.za

July | August 2018

S pecial F eature – M izuno J PX 900 Tour Another reasonable plan, but again, Mizuno had a problem. To a man, Mizuno’s tour staff fit the mould of an MP player. Call it classical, timeless, or fundamental; soft-spoken and understated. Luke Donald was an MP player, the face of the brand too, but not at all what Mizuno envisioned for JPX on tour. To rebrand the line, Mizuno would need to put a new face to the JPX franchise. The question being kicked around inside Mizuno was can we sign an athlete, a younger, modern, more aggressive player? Mizuno needed a stud, and it wasn’t long before it had zeroed in on one stud in particular. Titleist’s contracts with Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka were set to expire at the end of the year. The thinking across the industry was that Titleist wouldn’t retain both and most surmised that it would be Koepka who’d be looking for a new equipment deal. The first part of the plan to bring Koepka into the Mizuno fold, involved designing a JPX iron that he would find appealing. Since Mizuno couldn’t work with him directly, Mizuno’s team analysed his game – shot shape, trajectory, launch monitor numbers…that sort of thing. They also looked at how he dressed, and how he carried himself on and off the course. The iron itself would need to look the part of the player. For Mizuno that meant a radical departure from its previous tour offerings. A JPX Tour iron required a modern look; hard lines and hard edges, but it still needed to be compact. It needed to be everything Brooks Koepka would want in an iron. By the time the 2015 Players Championship rolled around, the JPX 900 Tour was ready. Mizuno considered bringing it to Brooks that week, but it would have been a breach of etiquette to put it in the hands of a player with the better part of 8 months left on his contract with a competitor. Typically, the new signing season starts in earnest much later in the summer. Mizuno would have to wait to show Brooks Koepka the iron it had made for him.

July | August 2018

At the same time, the Mizuno team was working to get approval on a proposal to sign a new face player. There’s a culture clash of sorts at Mizuno where the modern pay for play standard of the PGA Tour is often at odds with company leadership’s unwavering belief that there is no greater validation than having your product played without compensation. As sometimes happens, internal negotiations and foot-dragging carried on too long. Young, modern, and aggressive, it turns out, were also the defining characteristics of the prototype Nike Golf athlete. Before Mizuno could even put an offer on the table, Koepka signed with the Swoosh. Mizuno never had the chance to show him his irons. 2015 rolled into 2016 and Mizuno hadn’t signed anyone. There would be no Mr. JPX. Fast forward to August 3rd, 2016. After half a decade of rumours that it was considering pulling the plug, Nike bailed on the golf equipment business. Overnight, a slew of marquee names were equipment free agents. TaylorMade invested heavily in Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, but what no one could have predicted was that Mizuno would be the greatest beneficiary – at least in terms of tour play. And that brings us back to Brooks Koepka… Heading into the 2017 season, nearly everybody in the equipment biz was sending Koepka product with the hope of signing him to a long-term deal, or at the very least, getting their gear in his bag until someone else did. Fortuitously for Mizuno, by the end of the 2017 California swing, Koepka had put the JPX 900 Tour – his JPX 900 Tour - in the bag, still unaware that it had been designed specifically for him. The rest is, as they say, history. Brooks Koepka, with the JPX 900 Tour in the bag, wins the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills by four strokes and then goes back to back at Shinnecock Hills. He claims two Majors, and in doing so, gives Mizuno’s JPX line the tour validation the company hoped he would when it first launched its plan to sign him.
