You see the thing is that not only was Forrest a great golfer but he stood up for what he felt was wrong and he felt that wearing long pants at golf tournaments was wrong. In protest against the PGA Tours dress code that insists on long pants, Forrest sneaked into a porter toilet on the last

GOLF

TIP

CHIP THOSE DROP SHOTS

OFF THE SCORE CARD by Eugene Schwartz

M

ost golfers can save a few shots on a round of golf if they put in the same time on practicing their short game as they do with their long game. The goal is to hit your drive as far as you can, the 20 meter chip or a 3 foot putt is just as impotant as a 300 meter drive, all these count as a shot on the score card. If you can chip well you can keep those double drops off the score card. Correct setup on a bump and run chip can improve your ball striking and accuracy. When you watch a pro golfer hit a chip ,they want to give themselves a chance to hole the shot. There are many ways to play a chip shot, before you can work on your stroke you must have the correct setup to improve this part of your game.

Professional Golfer - Jacques Blaauw

The following examples will show you how to get a more consistent ball strike:

4

Your weight will favour your left side 60:40.

By doing this your hands will be slightly in front of the ball and this will help you to get a good strike on the ball.

It will also deloft the club.

Your eyes must feel like you are watching the front of the ball.

Your stance is narrower.

You can use your normal grip or your putting grip.

Aim your club face to the spot on the green were you want to land your ball, then aim your body parallel to the target.

DO NOT drop your head behind the ball as this can leed to a thin shot or where you make contact with the ground first.

www.sagolftrader.co.za

January | February 2019

tuition & instruction You want to stand taller and a bit closer to the ball. (about a grip length) By doing this your hands will be a bit more upright and help with less wrist use in the shot. Your arms must hang straight down and be against your body so that your arms and shoulder can move as one. To get a clean strike on the ball make sure that the toe of the club head is on the ground. This will give you a more consistent strike and let the ball roll out straighter as it lands on the green. If your hands are to low (picture 3) your club head toe will be in the air and only the heel of the club will rest on the ground. If the heel of the club makes contact with the ground first on impact the club face can close. Most likely you will put side spin on the ball and pull your chip which will result in your getting no control of the roll of the ball.

3 different ball flights without changing your setup

By just changing your ball position in your stance you can have 3 different shot selections with 1 club; •

To hit a low chip the ball position should be in line with your right heel.

To hit a mid chip the ball position should be in the middle of your feet.

To hit a high chip the ball position should be in line with your left heel.

When practing the 3 different flights use all your wedges to see what flights you get and how far the ball rolls out on the green. Most importantly don’t try help te ball up, let the club do the work.

When did you qualify as a PGA Professional? I qualified in 2007. What made you choose this career? Golf has always been my passion and I was inspired by my father who himself is a golf professional, so I guess you could say it is in my blood.

Has it always been golf for you? I was always very sporty as a youngster and most my time in school was taken up by tennis, but the history and romanticism of the game captured me as I matured and inevitably led me down this path. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour? The thought occasionally crossed my mind as I was a very competitive amateur having played Springbok juniors, but didn’t feel like I had the game to compete at the top level. Who has been you mentor in the golfing industry? Undoubtedly my father Algy Kietzmann who has been a member of the PGA for close on 50 years. You recently won the PGA Professional of the year in the Southern and Eastern Cape, what does this mean to you? I am extremely flattered by this recognition from my peers and undoubtedly it makes me

want to strive to reach even greater heights within the industry. Describe a typical work day for a PGA Club Professional. I try manage my day to make myself as visible and approachable to our members and guests as possible. I try to be front of house in the mornings helping with check in and then generally schedule lessons in the times where the shop is at it’s quietest. As a big part of my job is the day to day running of the club in conjunction with our Director Alistair Beaumont, I focus on making sure everything is running seamlessly. With the devastating fires the garden route had recently, did you have any damage? We were very fortunate to not have had any serious damage to property or the golf course

Do you have any precautionary measures in place? Yes, as per the fire and safety measurements required. 10. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? I guess some of my members will be reading this so that’s a resounding yes!

more playable for a big portion of our market. 13. Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life? Yes it does, I generally take my leave in the winter months as December through March and weekends in general are our busiest periods and I feel like I should be present. 14. What are your short & long term goals? My short term goals include understanding and learning more and more facets of what makes the golfing industry tick and finding ways to implement strategies to keep myself relevant within my role as a golf pro. Long term

11. With consumers being careful on how they spend their money these days, are you finding other ways besides golf to attract people to the club? As Simola is a resort, we are constantly trying to find ways of making it an attractive proposition for families and have recently added a kid friendly play area. We are constantly trying to find innovative ways to make it an affordable holiday including some great stay and play specials, especially in the winter months. 12. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Simola? By enforcing ready golf and encouraging the higher handicappers to tee off markers that are slightly forward which also makes the course

to assume directorship and sustain a love for what I do. 15. What is your opinion on the state of golf in South Africa? We are undoubtedly losing players but I think with the new laws and rules coming in to place to make the game more understandable and quicker it can only help the state of our game. 16. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I am a very social person so I enjoy spending time with friends and exploring our beautiful country when I get the chance. 17. Do you still get time to play? I do not play nearly as much as I used to as a youngster but still look forward to my weekly game with my members in our Tuesday School and I have been making more of an effort to play in our regional Pro Ams.

Champagne Sports Resort – The sparkling crown of the Central Drakensberg

F

ounded in 1996, Champagne Sports Resort has over the past 22 years clearly established itself as the resort of choice for those visiting the central Drakensberg. Swimming pools, tennis courts, a bowling green, trail running, MTB trails, a gym, a spa, basketball, volley ball, badminton, a squash court, Cathkin trails, putt - putt and of course a championship 18-hole golf course make it a mecca for holiday makers who enjoy being active.

“All in all Champagne Sports Resort is a world class destination. The golf course is top notch, with one of the best clubhouses around, the pro-shop is well appointed with friendly staff, the accommodation and meals are superb and there is plenty to do for children. Designed by rain forced us back into the clubhouse. As we former South African professional golfer Hugh watched the heavens opening we reflected on Baiocchi, it is tree lined with ample water just how beautiful the front nine was and also hazards and strategically placed bunkers and all how challenging. The signature par-3 fourth the while Cathkin peak and Champagne peak was a standout as well as the par-3 seventh loom large in the not too distant background. which is so pretty as to almost be unreal.

Tuesday morning saw us up bright and early and tackling a back nine and course conditions significantly different to the day before. The course was noticeably greener and the greens were playing slower. With the sun shining brightly this was one of those mornings where you look around and count your blessings.

The back nine proved to be every inch as good as the front nine with standout holes being the 15th, 16th and the 18th which is a stroke 2, par-4 and a really, really good closing hole.

SUSTAINABLE GOLF IN THE DRAKENSBERG AND NATAL MIDLANDS AND AGENTS FOR CHANGE by John Collier

M

argaret Roberts in her book Sustainability: Principles and Practice published in 2017, defined sustainability as enduring into the long-term future. In this regard, during 2018 the John Collier Team once again collated environmental compliance and good governance data from many clubs in South Africa not the least being, some destination golf courses in the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands. This data will form the basis of the 12th edition of John Collier Annual Survey of South African Golf Courses which will be published in March 2019. The John Collier Team recently visited two golf clubs in the Drakensberg and Natal Midlands, namely Champagne Sports, near Winterton and Bosch Hoek, in the Balgowan area. In discussing sustainability with management of these two courses, probably without realising it, both Trevor Livesey of Champagne Sports and Brad Ross of Bosch Hoek are working as agents for change for a more sustainable golf course. This can be seen in their data, with Champagne Sports achieving Gold Compliance Level Status in 2018. But in order to be an agent for change this takes courage, discipline, engage in big-picture thinking, and the ability to communicate, listen and collaborate. So, to be an effective sustainable golf agent for change, club management and especially greenkeepers need to have relevant course information available to them. In this regard, clubs are encouraged to participate in the 2019 John Collier survey, the cost is negligible, as it is only your time, spent on completing the survey. If you require assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us via email at ajcollier@telkomsa.net. Lastly all persons involved in the turfgrass industry are encouraged to join and participate in the relevant regional Turfgrass Managers Association meetings.

Premier Resort Sani Pass – A Fun Round of Golf in the Mountains

W

e have dealt quite extensively with Premier Hotels & Resorts in the past and when their marketing team contacted us to say that they had a resort in the Southern ‘Berg” with a 9-hole golf course that they would like us to look at we were naturally interested. They stressed the point that the course was new and that a lot of work needed to be done, we stressed the point that not everyone is looking for a championship golf course and that many people just enjoy getting out in the fresh air whilst having some fun hitting a little white ball around! “On the accommodation side they offer rooms which feature the modern amenities you’d expect from a luxury hotel in a comfortable, contemporary and spacious setting”

20

Premier Resort Sani Pass is a spectacular resort nestled at the foot of the Sani Pass and on the banks of the Mkhomazana River with its fresh water coming straight from the Drakensberg Mountains. Only 19km from the town of Underberg with a road built from the Lesotho border post via the Katse & Mohali dams to Maseru and the South African border post through to Ladybrand in the Free State. “As you walk down the fairway of life you must smell the roses, for you only get to play one round” Surrounded by mountains, the resort is the base for 4X4 excursions up the Sani Pass, which can be reserved for guests at their reception desk. The resort also provides access to horse trails up the mountain to Lesotho as well as shorter horse rides around the property and pony

“It’s an unpretentious golf course where you will find sheep grazing on the fairway” When we got on to the golf course it was a revelation, we had been travelling for more than 4 hours and we were in need of some relaxation and to be honest we didn’t feel like a serious round of golf. Fun, that’s what we felt like having – some fun and boy does this little 9-holer provide that. It’s an unpretentious golf course where you will find sheep grazing on the fairways; here it is not so much about pristine putting surfaces and USGA spec bunker sand but more about enjoying the experience of playing a round of golf IN the mountains at the foot of the world famous Sani Pass.

Ben Hogan famously said “As you walk down the fairway of life you must smell the roses, for you only get to play one round.” Playing golf at Premier Resort reminds one of how true this is.

to the challenges of 2019. This year has been one of my best, but my ultimate goal was to get on the European Tour and my other achievements were really stepping stones to get there. “It just hit me an hour ago that I really have to plan my year now because there are also some new events on the European Tour, but my focus has really been on this week because it is such a big one. Last year I knew my game was there and maybe I put too much expectation on myself. This year I didn’t have any expectations, I just took it shot-by-shot.”

She finished 10th in the finals in December of the Lalla Aicha Tour School at Amelkis GC in Morocco, finishing her five rounds on nine-under-par and having to bounce back from a 75 in the first round.

South African Ladies Cricket Captain 1. Where were you born? Pretoria. 2. Tell us about your schooling as you started your international career at the age of 15, which must have made it difficult. I was in Centurion High school until grade 10 and then attended home schooling via Brainline for my last 2 years. 3. What sports did you do at school? Hockey and Softball. 4. Did you come from a sporting background? Yes definitely. Grew up with sport and watching it all the time. 5. When did you realize that cricket was the sport you want to take further? Never thought I could play cricket as a profession but I loved it so much that it didn’t matter if I could do it for a living or not. Now, here I am having the best job in the world. 6. What has been your biggest achievement so far? Being selected as the captain of the Protea Women’s Team. 7. Being captain ads a lot of extra responsibilities and pressures, how do you cope?

32

I’m very lucky, I have a great team and team mates around me and they help take the pressure off me. It helps that I don’t take things too seriously. 8. How difficult is it for you and the team to get over the recent World Cup disappointment? It’s a difficult pill to swallow but at the end of the day we need to learn from our mistakes to become better players and better prepared for future tournaments. 9. You are currently at the BBL, you obviously enjoy the shortest format of the game? Yes absolutely love it. Intense 3 hours of cricket and the margins are so much smaller. 10. Batting or Bowling? Tough one, but I have to say bowling. 11. What are your other interests besides cricket? We get to spend very little time at home so I have to say I’m interested in spending time at home in front of my braai. 12. What advice would you give to youngsters today as far as sport is concerned? It’s one of the best jobs in the world. It’s tough work but if you persist then you will reap the rewards of hard work.

SPECIAL FEATURE - CELEBRIT Y GOLFER PROFILE

GETTING ON TO GOLF •

When did you start playing golf? Probably got into golf about a year ago.

What is your current handicap? Honestly I don’t have one. Trying not to lose too many balls during a round of golf.

Are you a member of a golf club? I am not but would love to join.

Which is your favorite golf course and why? I’ve only played on a few courses but the one that has stood out for me is definitely The Coast Golf Course in Sydney.

Have you had any embarrassing moments whilst playing golf? Haha I played with one of my English and S.A friends in England and as I tried to be a really good friend and retrieve one of the balls that was laying in, what looked to be just wet sand, I jumped to get the ball and it was actually knee deep mud. Took me a while to get out.

What is your favorite club in the bag? Nr 7 iron.

When you play, do you walk or take a cart? Cart 100%.

If you could pick a golf swing, who’s would it be? Probably Tiger’s because he’s a legend.

Have you ever had a hole-in-one? I wish.

What would be your ideal fourball? AB de Villiers, Tiger Woods, Patrick Reed & Kevin Hart.

Louis makes history with six-stroke SA Open win to have the two oldest opens in the world. There was a lot of emotions at the end there. It was a tough four days but I feel like I put everything together until the end.” Already exempt for the open championship to be played at Royal Troon next season, Oosthuizen’s main objective was to win at Randpark while compatriot and friend, Schwartzel’s mission was two-sided. He wanted to claim his maiden South African Open Championship while eyeing a spot in The Open. He had to settle for the latter as he and England’s Oliver Wilson joined Langasque as the three players earning spots to the oldest open championship in the world after he finished in a share of third alongside Wilson and compatriots Bryce Easton and Thomas Aiken.

L

ouis Oosthuizen cemented his place in the history books when he won the South African Open Championship, co-sanctioned for the first time by the Sunshine Tour, the European Tour and the Asian Tour at Randpark GC in December. His six-stroke victory over France’s Romain Langasque also earned him the unique distinction of being only the fourth South African player to claim the oldest open championships in the world, namely The Open Championship and the South African Open Championship. He joins Bobby Locke, Gary Player and Ernie Els in that unique club of champions. “I think I’m the fourth South African to do it,” he said after his victory. “It feels very special

Girls Bringing a Powerful Game to Golf Shasta Averyhardt The first African-American golfer on the LPGA Tour since 2001

Shasta Averyhardt’s pathway to golf began at the age of 7 on behalf of her father. Born and raised in Flint, Michigan, she pursued the game of golf with a dedication that landed her with a full-ride golf scholarship to Jackson State University. With a successful collegiate career, Shasta set her sights on the LPGA Tour. She earned her LPGA Tour card within two years after graduation. Shasta has learned over the years that the pathway to success is first knowing your life’s purpose and then being able to take the next step with confidence. The best inspiration she has received was a quote that stated, “You should never, absolutely NEVER ask someone else what they think you should do unless that person has already done what you want to do.”

Simpson seals stylish Junior Series double at Randpark

S

am Simpson underlined his billing as one of South Africa’s emerging young stars when he stormed to a five-shot victory in the Joburg Junior Open at Randpark GC in December. The 16-year-old Bellville golfer announced himself in July when he captured his first title on the Sunshine Tour Junior Series in the Tshwane Junior Open at Irene CC.

“It was a little daunting at first, but I felt really good about my game,” he said. “We played the course the same way it was set up for the pros in the SA Open. There were some tricky pins and you really had to manage your game. I struck the ball really well over both days. I hit a lot of fairways and greens and I limited my mistakes. That was key to my win.”

A month later, Simpson travelled to Italy with the GolfRSA National Squad team, where he impressed with a runner-up finish in the highly-rated Italian Under-16 Championship. The Western Province junior had another chance in the Africa Junior Open in August, but lost out to 2018 Nomads SA Boys U-15 and U-17 champion Casey Jarvis at the Fish River Resort.

Simpson fired 11 birdies and only dropped two shots in the 36-hole tournament.

He tied for fourth in the Cape Town Junior Open in October, but went back to his winning ways in November. Simpson outperformed some of the country’s top amateurs with a winning performance in the Bobby Locke at Parkview GC. It was his first victory on the Open Amateur circuit and Simpson arrived at Randpark for the season-finale busting with confidence.

“I am really excited to finish the season so strong. It’s great to sign off on a high note and to set the tone for next year.”

Golfing Galant brothers dominate in Rondebosch

T

ristan Galant’s 2-under-par 70 saw him win the Bridge Fund Junior Series event at Rondebosch.

It was a proud day for the Galant family of Belhar as teen brothers Tristan and Jaydon dominated the u19 and u13 divisions respectively of the prestigious Bridge Fund Managers Junior Series tournament at Rondebosch GC in December. Tristan, who recently turned 17, bookended his round with a birdie on the opening hole and two birdies to finish, as he shot 70 to win the u19 division on a scorching hot day on the fairways. His 11-year-old brother parred the final nine holes on the way to shooting a magnificent 74 to claim the u13 title. By winning the u19 title Tristan qualifies for the regional finals of the #BridgeJuniorSeries in April 2019 where the ultimate prize is an all-expenses paid trip to compete in the glittering Junior North and South Championship at Pinehurst, USA. Tristan is considering taking up an offer to complete his high schooling at a golf academy in South Carolina, but will fly back to Cape Town to compete in the Bridge regional final in April. “I really want to win that trip to play Pinehurst,” he says. “I feel that if I prepare well I

74

can compete on any course.”

The brothers, both members of King David Mowbray GC, look set to follow in the footsteps of their uncle Mervin Galant who played as a professional golfer on the Sunshine Tour. “My uncle is an excellent coach. He doesn’t focus too much on technique, but is more about feel, and touch around the greens,” says Tristan, who is also coached by Paul McKenzie. The highlight of Tristan’s round was on the 5th hole where his drive of about 300m nestled just short of the green, and he stepped up to chip in for an eagle two. Jaydon Galant emulated his older brother by winning the U13 division. Young Jaydon can’t bomb his drives like his strapping older brother … not yet! So, he has a more conservative game plan. “The key for me is to stay calm, hit a lot of fairways so I have clear shots to the greens, and then back myself to sink some putts,” says Jaydon, a Grade 4 pupil at Erica Primary, Belhar. “Tristan and Jaydon are wonderful golfers and do the SA Golf Development Board proud with their golfing skills and their attitude,” says Paul Stewart, Executive Director at Bridge Fund Managers.

Rebula marches to Freddie Tait Cup glory in SA Open

R

eigning Amateur champion Jovan Rebula joined an extraordinary league of gentlemen when he claimed the coveted Freddie Tait Cup in the 2019 South African Open Championship. The 21-year-old George golfer carried a two-shot overnight lead into the final round and sealed the low amateur honour by four shots on six-under-par 278 at Randpark Golf Club on Sunday.

“I dreamt about winning the Freddie Tait Cup since I won my first junior tournament. It has taken me three tries to do it, and I really had to grind it out today, but this rates right up there with winning the Amateur Championship. It’s incredibly satisfying to tick another huge box on my bucket list,” a smiling Rebula said. “Almost every Major champion and top South African golfers have won the Freddie Tait Cup. Bobby Locke, Trevor Immelman, Charl Schwartzel, Hennie Otto, Branden Grace, Brandon Stone. If winning the SA Open is the ultimate prize for our South African pros, the Freddie Tait is the rite of passage for every South African amateurs. “My uncle (Ernie Els) won it in 1989 and I am so incredibly proud that I’ve kept the family tradition going and added my name to the past winner’s list.” He started a memorable third round alongside Els in the front, after three fellow GolfRSA National Squad members also made the cut to 65 and ties, set at two-under. Rebula was one shot clear of South Africa’s top ranked Wilco Nienaber and three strokes ahead of 2018 Sanlam SA Amateur champion Deon Germishuys and 15-year-old Yurav Premlall, the youngest amateur in the history of the SA Open to qualify and make the weekend. Spurred on by four-time Major winner Els, Rebula produced a second successive round of 70 on Firethorn to tighten his grip on the Freddie Tait Cup.

January | February 2019

“It was undoubtedly one of the most amazing experiences of my career to play with my uncle,” said the Auburn University student. “It was incredibly special, but it went by so quickly. I could have stayed out there for another 18 holes. “He has been a huge role model for me, even more off the course than on, and to tee it up with him in the SA Open for the first time, is a memory I will cherish for ever. The conditions were tough, especially through the stretch between 11 and 14, but he kept me positive.” Rebula started the final round on six-under, three clear of Erne Els and Fancourt Foundation stable-mate Germishuys and five shots ahead of Premlall and Nienaber. He underlined his growing reputation as a future world-beater when he rallied with birdies at four and nine to wipe out a bogey-bogey start and turn level par. “It definitely wasn’t my best ball striking week, but I putted really well all week and I made a lot of clutch putts to keep the round going today,” said Rebula, who signed for a final round 71. “I’m really proud of the guys who teed it up and Deon, Wilco and Yurav, who made the cut. It’s great for amateur golf to see four amateurs on the weekend, and I hope we inspired the next generation.” Rebula tied for 24th alongside last year’s champion Chris Paisley, among others. Premlall and Germishuys grabbed a share of 43rd on two-under with Austin Connelly from Canada, Frenchman Gregory Bourdy and Henric Sturehed from Sweden. The Edengled junior carded rounds of 73, 67, 72 and 70, while Strand golfer Germishuys followed three successive rounds of 70 with a final round 72. Nienaber from Bloemfontein tied for 54th on one-over after posting rounds of 69, 69, 74 and 72.

is the Golfer from the past?

Born in Australia on 10th January 1862, he passed away on 31st July 1927 in Denver, Colorado. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1890. He first played golf just three months before his 35th birthday. Within a month of hitting his first golf shot, he won his first trophy by winning the Oakland Golf Club handicap competition. Driven by an intense and compulsive dedication to the game, he was soon the country’s top amateur golfer, winning the U.S. Amateur in 1900, 1901 & 1903. In 1904, he became the first player from America to win the British Amateur. He was respectfully referred to as “The Old Man” or “The Grand Old Man” due to his late start in the game. With declining health diminishing his skills, he announced his retirement from competitive golf in 1916. Answer on page 88
