LE T TER TO THE EDITOR

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. Dear Editor

Dear Shane

Recently I heard someone say that the days of a father playing ball outside with the children were on the way out. They implied that computer games such as Wii were taking over and that children from now on would start to abandon traditional sports and become addicted to their television sets and computers.

I could not agree with you more. Though computer games and the like are very much a part of life today there can very few things better than playing rugby, soccer, golf or whatever in the park with your children.

What a lot of nonsense! I have young children and it seems to me that outdoor activities are alive and well with children longing for simple pleasures such as kicking a ball or hitting a ball around the garden. Golf in particular is a perfect activity as it provides uninterrupted family time outdoors and is also a great way to spend quality time with your family and friends! It is great exercise in a beautiful setting. Golf helps children learn how to focus and teaches great life lessons - respect, integrity, sportsmanship, camaraderie and problem solving. It is also an excellent business tool for networking when they get older.

When it comes to golf, I think that more children should be encouraged to visit driving ranges and that a round of golf needs to become more of a family activity. In addition, children should be encouraged to attend golf tournaments as they do for rugby, soccer, cricket etc.

Regards

Golf is a game for a lifetime and can be appreciated by young and old. How many other sports can a parent, child and grandparent participate in together? I feel that sport (real sport) will always be a part and parcel of our children’s lives. Regards Shane Middleton

Performance Tip brought to you by Mark Fairbank – BSI Mental Coach and Head of Golf Performance

Ignore your ego,

10 10

C

ommon questions I receive as a Mental Coach is, “What does it take?” or “What do the tour players do differently?” and the answer is maybe not what you would expect! In working with Sunshine and European Tour players over the years, I have noticed so many similarities between them and amateurs I work with that are 5, 10 sometimes 18 handicappers. The similaritie are that they struggle with confidence, they have doubt over many shots, they are often nervous and feel the pressure. The difference is that Pros are most times able to pull off their desired shot in these circumstances.

The answer is quite simp as to why Tour players ar able to do this - they stic to their strengths. Unles they absolutely have to, you will rarely see any tour player attempt a sh they are not comfortable with or do not know tha they can definitely pull o Successful and consistent players know their weaknesses and their strengths, they use this information to their advantage, by using their strengths as often as possible during their rounds they score consistently well and appear to be playing “easy” golf. My experience with amateurs, ironically more so, higher handicappers, is that despite the reduced level of skill in comparison to tour players, they still attempt incredibly difficult shots and believe that they should be able to hit a perfect draw or fade on demand. Collin Morikawa is one of the most successful players on tour in recent years and is regarded as

one of the best iron players ever. As much as 95% of the shots he hits during a round of golf shape left to right. He is quoted as saying that he practices right to left shots on the range, but because he is uncomfortable hitting this shape under pressure, he does not attempt it during competition. The result of this is that his misses are much more consistent with his irons, he is able to hit many more greens, reducing dropped shots and increased birdie opportunities.

So why do amateurs with less skill attempt shots during their rounds that the world’s best wouldn’t go for? Because of our Ego! Rather than managing ourselves and playing smart golf, we do what we think we ‘should’ be able to do and want to look good, rather than playing the shots we are able to play and playing shots we have the highest percentage chance of executing well.

Golf is about finishing with the lowest score possible, leave your ego behind and hit the shots you are more comfortable and are easiest for you to hit, your end score will look much better!

NEW RULES FOR 2022

he USGA and R&A announced in October that the new year will see a new local rule that caps driver length at 46 inches. Previously, clubs could be up to 48 inches long. However, this rule does not cover all levels of golf. This is a local rule, which allows any tour to apply it to their competitions. The PGA Tour will enact the rule in 2022. Another local rule taking effect Jan. 1 will render greens-reading books a thing of the past on the PGA Tour. Players and caddies will use a “committee

approved” yardage book that contains only general information about a green’s contours. Players can add notes to the books, but those must be based on first-hand observations on the course or during a telecast. Players cannot use tools or devices to measure the slope of greens and cannot add notes to their yardage books based on the use of such tools. “The purpose of this local rule is to return to a position where players and caddies use only their skill, judgment and feel along with any information gained through experience, preparation, and practice to read the line of play on the putting green,” read a memo sent to players by the PGA Tour.

VAN TONDER WINS THE SA OPEN Daniel van Tonder echoed exactly what every South African golfer dreams of when he said, “I can walk around knowing I’m the South African Open champion”. With his one-stroke victory at the Gary Player CC in December, Van Tonder joined the greats of South African golf in adding his name to this prestigious trophy. “This is a special win. This is the second oldest Open in golf, and winning it is big. Watching people win it has always looked so good. And now I can say I’m the SA Open champion,” said Van Tonder. On an overcast and at times wet Sunday at Sun City, Van Tonder produced a magnificent final round of 65 and birdied the final hole to win on 16 under par.

putts. My mindset was to just go for it,” he said. The win caps a memorable year for Van Tonder in which he claimed his maiden DP World Tour title and played in two Majors for the first time. “This year has been incredible, but it’s also been long and hard. We’ve been away for six months because of the travel restrictions. So to come back home and to a golf course I love, and win the South African Open is very special,” he said. The amateur Premlall was delighted with his Freddie Tait triumph in his fourth appearance in the South African Open. “I’ve waited a long time for this and it’s something I’ve always wanted. This one means a lot to me,” he said.

Oliver Bekker took second place on 15 under with a closing 66, and Hennie du Plessis finished third on 12 under with a final round of 69. Sunday morning began with the third round still to be completed, and with Justin Harding taking a commanding four-stroke lead at the end of it. But Van Tonder held his nerve and began his run with a birdie at the first hole. He turned in three under for his round and then produced the kind of back nine worthy of a champion as he made four birdies – including two in his last three holes – to take the title. “I’ve been seven shots behind before. I’ve even been nine shots behind before. So I just played my game and made my

SUNSHINE TOUR ANNOUNCE JAM-PACKED 2022 SEASON The Sunshine Tour has announced its 2022 schedule, which includes co-sanctioning two new DP World Tour events and seven tournaments co-sanctioned with the Challenge Tour. South African golfers will compete for almost R80 million in total tournament prize money in 2022. The Sunshine Tour’s 2022 season will tee off in Sun City with the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final at the Gary Player Country Club from 17-20 January. Then the Sunshine Tour will co-sanction seven Challenge Tour events with this Southern African swing commencing in February, March and April. These new Challenge Tour events will join the existing Dimension Data Pro-Am (Fancourt), Cape Town Open (Royal Cape Golf Club and Rondebosch Golf Club), and the Limpopo Championship (Euphoria Golf & Lifestyle Estate and Koro Creek Bushveld Estate). For the first time, Sunshine Tour will also co-sanction an event in Tanzania with the new Mount Kilimanjaro Klassic at the Kilimanjaro Golf & Wildlife Estate. Meanwhile in March, the DP World Tour will feature two new South African tournaments - the $1.5 million Pecanwood Classic at the Pecanwood Golf Estate and the $1.5 million Steyn City Championship at Steyn City. The Kit Kat Group Pro-Am (Irene Country Club), Players Championship

(Dainfern Golf Estate) and Tour Championship (Serengeti Estates) round off the new schedule. “A tremendous amount of work together with the ongoing support of our chairperson Johann Rupert, our Executive Director Selwyn Nathan, our Board of Directors, our partners and sponsors has allowed us to announce what we believe is a fabulous Sunshine Tour schedule to start the year with,” said Thomas Abt, commissioner of the Sunshine Tour. “We are delighted to be able to grow our relationship with the DP World Tour and the Challenge Tour with the offering of even more opportunities for our member professionals to secure a place on an international tour while playing at home. This significantly enhances what has always been our global pathway to success for our professionals. “We also have several new sponsors on board that have recognised the value professional golf offers. I’d also like to pay tribute to our existing sponsors Dimension Data, Bain’s Whisky, City of Cape Town, the Limpopo Tourism Authority, Vodacom and the Kit Kat Group - many of whom have been with us for a very long time and who continue to give us the means to build on a Sunshine Tour brand that is globally recognised as a place of opportunity and reflective of our slogan that ‘GreatnessBeginsHere’.”

If you noticed out there, I didn’t really play a whole lot of draws. If I did, they were all short irons. Most of them were just hot cuts or slappy cuts up there, you know, something out there. The hardest part for me was that -- what I saw distance-wise and what I felt on my last look -- I always play by my hands and my last look, it didn’t match up a lot of times. I was short. And then a few times, I actually hit it solid and I smoked it over a couple greens. You know, I’ve got some work ahead of me.” On feeling competitive: “The competitive

THE GROWTH OF GOLF AND WHY NEVER BEEN A MORE LUCRATIVE BE AN ELITE TOUR PROFESSIONA PGA Tour announces massive purse increases, other income streams for players. You couldn’t blame Rory McIlroy if he’s thinking green in more ways than one. In November the PGA Tour announced more than $100 million in purse increases for the 2022 season, according to a three-page memo from Commissioner Jay Monahan sent to players that was circulated on social media and first reported by Golfweek. The increases, which span well beyond traditional prize money and into a variety of different potential revenue streams for players, represent the Tour’s biggest movement yet in response to outside competition posed by the rumored league from Greg Norman-led LIV Golf Investments. In the memo, the Tour outlines $105 million in increases for 2022, roughly $70 million of which come from surging revenues (Tour forecasts project total revenue will increase to $1.522 billion in 2022). According to Monahan, the remaining $32 million comes from the Tour’s “reserves” — ostensibly unspent money from previous years — rounding out the remainder of the purse increases. FedEx Cup bonus pool will grow from $60 million to $75 million. Comcast Business Tour Top 10 will double from $10 million to $20 million.

purses on the Challenge Tour, the European Tour’s development circuit. As part of that initiative, the top five finishers on the season-end rankings will have their travel and expenses covered during the ensuing season on the DP World Tour. These cash infusions come amidst an arms race that is raging between the professional golf tours, driven by threats of rival circuits baiting away the game’s best players with huge guaranteed paydays. Greg Norman was named CEO of Saudi-backed LIV Golf Investments, which announced a $200 million investment in the Asian Tour — and which is reportedly also on the verge of announcing plans for an alternative, big-money global tour. Organizers of yet another would-be tour, the Premier Golf League, also are still hopeful their circuit will become a reality, with cooperation from the PGA Tour. All of this activity comes just months after the PGA and European tours announced a strategic alliance. Under that partnership, three tournaments in 2022 will be co-sanctioned by the two tours: the Genesis Scottish Open, the Barbasol Championship and the Barracuda Championship. “I’ve said before that our respective Tours are positioned to grow — together — over the next 10 years faster than we ever have at any point in our existence, and this announcement is another point of proof in those efforts,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement. In a time of great uncertainty in professional golf, one thing’s for sure: It’s never been a more lucrative time to be an elite tour professional.

Prize money isn’t just growing on the DP World Tour Tour. It’s doubling.

GROWTH OF GOLF THROUGH LEA

oard governance (in other words the management committee of a golf club) is fundamental to the success of non-profit sport organisations such as golf. The guidance of the board in setting direction, and ensuring the organisation maintains that direction in a fiscally responsible manner, is found in organisations ranging from national sport governing bodies to local sports clubs. In essence amateur golf in South Africa, with the exception of the employees of GolfRSA, by and large all other administrators representing amateur golf in South Africa, such as the South African Golf Association and other national representative bodies, the provincial unions and individual golf clubs carry out their functions in an unpaid capacity. In this regard the growth of golf in South Africa is inextricably intertwined with leadership and governance. Over the past few years there has been increasing research into understanding the mechanisms and impact of non-profit sport board performance. Much of this research is focusing on the need to understand the mechanisms that contribute to “teamwork” or dynamics of the volunteer board of directors, its members, and its leaders.

Leader behaviour is one of the most researched topics in management studies, yet it is notably missing from non-profit sport board literature. Generally, research is focused on three contemporary theories namely shared leadership, servant leadership, and values-based leadership. Space does not permit elaboration on these theories save to say that the growth of golf is intertwined with governance and leadership whether it is shared, servant or values based. At Oubaai this is the cornerstone of our belief. Home means something different to all, but a home should be a place that nourishes the body, mind and spirit. This is the underlying value that has created and grown Oubaai Golf Resort into the outstanding residential estate that it is today. Situated adjacent to Herolds Bay on the Garden Route, a mere 8 minutes from George Airport, this hidden gem is ideally located with 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean. Authentic is one of the first words that comes to mind when thinking about Oubaai, designed to blend in with the natural splendor of the Cape. The eco-friendly ethos has created a natural paradise – providing a haven to an array of wildlife. State of the art security systems offer complete peace of mind, enabling Oubaai residents to wander the expanse of the 546 hectare estate without a worry. The Ernie Els 18 hole Championship course is kept in mint condition and it is one of the most beautiful settings that can be seen anywhere in the golfing world. It was recently awarded 3rd best conditioned course in Southern Cape and 10th in South Africa. The layout of the course is a traditional links type layout where veld grasses line the manicured fairways. The course measures 6,516 meters from the pro tees, which is uniquely long for a coastal course.

The jewel of the Simbithi Country Club is undoubtedly the magnificent 18-hole golf course, designed by Peter Matkovich. Thoughtfully-placed greens that hold a well-struck shot, pristine fairways and a layout that allows you to play every club in your bag. South Africa’s first executive course, Simbithi has a par of 60 comprising par-3s, par-4s and one par 5. Each hole is intriguingly named after the area it occupied when Simbithi was once farmland.

Simbithi Country Club incorporates a selection of eateries, wedding and conference venues and, of course, the unparalleled 18-hole Executive Golf Course.

PREMLALL PREVAILS TO LIFT THE FREDDIE TAIT CUP Yurav Premlall dreamt of winning the Freddie Tait Cup long before he made South African Open Championship history, and on Sunday 5 December at Sun City, the GolfRSA National Squad member achieved his goal. In 2018, the Glendower amateur made international headlines when - at the age of 15 years and five months - he became the youngest amateur in history to qualify for the SA Open at Randpark GC, and the youngest to make the 36-hole cut. In his fourth appearance in the national Open, Premlall once again entered the history books when he took centre stage on the iconic island green at the Gary Player CC alongside 2021 champion Danie van Tonder. The 18-year-old bagged the leading amateur prize with rounds of 70, 69, 72 and 75 on a total score of two-under-par 286. “It took me four tries, and I am over the moon that that I got the job done. I’ve been waiting a long time for this moment. It was something I always wanted to achieve, and this means the world to me,” he said. It wasn’t the first time that Premlall conquered the challenging championship layout this year. Seven months ago, he went wire-to-wire against the country’s top ranked juniors to lift the inaugural Nedbank Junior Challenge title. “I guess something about this course brings out the best in me,” he said.“It just suits my

70

game. Coming back here after winning the Nedbank Junior Challenge definitely boosted my confidence. “To be honest, I almost lost it by getting too aggressive. I wasn’t disciplined and made a terrible start with a double at 11 and bogey at 12. I went back to playing the last nine holes conservatively and not doing anything stupid. Even coming into the final hole, I could have gone for the green, but I chose the safer option. “To lift the Freddie Tait Cup is very special. Ours is the second oldest Open in golf, and to finish as the leading amateur and to join the list of past winners is something we all aspire to. To join guys like Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Charl Schwartzel and Branden

A M AT E U R N E W S Grace as a winner is a dream come true and I am over the moon that I pulled it through.” Exempt spots for the 111th edition was awarded to GolfRSA’s five leading available amateurs on the Open Amateur rankings and Premlall once again had to do it the hard way and prequalify for the SA Open, joining Christiaan Maas (1), Kieron van Wyk (2), Casey Jarvis (3), Christiaan Burke (5) and Jordan Duminy (6) at Sun City. Premlall guaranteed his start by winning the Irene Qualifier alongside fellow GolfRSA National Squad member Werner Deyzel, while yet another squad member, Kyle de Beer, booked his berth with a runner-up finish in the ERPM Qualifier. Louis Oosthuizen Junior Golf Academy member Ivan Verster made it a nine-strong amateur challenge with his win in the

Modderfontein Qualifier. Premlall, Van Wyk, Deyzel and De Beer made it to the weekend and the Freddie Tait Cup winner shared 30th position with former winner Jayden Schaper, European Tour champion George Coetzee, Jean Hugo and squad graduates Luca Filippi and Dylan Naidoo. Van Wyk, back from his first six months at the College of Charleston and representing South Africa in the Spirit International in November, finished on one-over 289. The CMR golfer tied for 45th squad graduate Malcolm Mitchell, Peter Karmis, David Drysdale, Jacques Kruyswijk and Pieter Moolman. Woodhill’s Deyzel tied for 51st on two-over 290 and De Beer’s final-round 72 earned the Port Elizabeth golfer a share of 65th on six over with Adilson da Silva from Brazil.

ALL ABOUT GREEN KEEPING

QA &

WITH

CHARL POTGIETER

Head Greenkeeper - Southbroom Golf Club

1. When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further? I always wanted to do law and I enrolled at RAU, but a last minute change of mind meant that I ended up going to Wits Hotel School. After realising that i did not want to work in hospitality, I tried to turn Pro, although I am a good golfer I will never make money out of the game. My time spent on golf courses and watching the way the ball behaves interested me and that was the start of getting into greenkeeping. 2. What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent? The best part of being a greenkeeper is getting to the course every morning to watch the sunrise. That quite time of reflection, gathering your thoughts and driving around the course with a sense of purpose. The worst is when things happen and you can’t give your members the product they deserve. 3. You are at Southbroom, a coastal course, what is your biggest challenge maintaining a KZN coastal course? Our biggest challenge at Southbroom is definitely dealing with the elements. Staying on track with your spraying programme sometimes only having 2 to 3 mornings to spray before the winds pick up. We also struggle more with disease than up country. We have a grass on our greens, paspalum vaginatum, which is very susceptable to fungus. 4. What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) in KZN to other parts of the country? In KZN we generally have cynodin tees and fairways and on the coast paspalum greens. When you move more inbound towards Pietermartitzburg you to tend to have the more traditional kikuyu tees and fairways and bentgrass greens.

82

5. Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country? Our machinery on most courses are very similar. The only major difference is in that the upcountry courses use walkbehinds far more extensively than us on the coast. 6. How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance? Climate and location play a big role in the way you maintain the course. We are located on the beach and we have very hot, humid summers, that is why we have paspalum on the greens, for this grass is very salt tolerant and can take heat but will not grow in cooler conditions. We are also on dunes where the cynodin thrives under the drier conditions on the coast if cut at a bit higher height. 7. To what extent does course setup affect slow play, and how do you deal with it? I take time to set up the course and for bigger days it is in consultation with the director of golf as to what his requirements might be for either the competition or sponsor day. You must know your bottle neck holes and on busy days set them up easy as to encourage faster play on those specific holes. Does not always work but does help. On blind or semi blind tee shots put out a forecaddy as a spotter and to indicate in or out of bounds so there is no need to return to the tee and waste time. You can immediately reload. 8. In your opinion does course machinery or golfers spread more seeds like POA or diseases? I think there are a few elements in the spread of POA seed. Golfers do spread the seed and so does machinery but I think especially on our course it is mostly spread by birds. We have flocks of these tiny black birds moving from green to green in winter eating the seed and then also moving it around.

ALL ABOUT GREEN KEEPING of grass in a divot. It is our job to remove all dead divots and fill the hole with the required amount of sand to enable recovery. Pitchmarks on greens are a major problem. My greens operators must inspect every green in the morning and repair pitchmarks before mowing. If golfers repaired them it would save time as well as speed up recovery. I feel the golf cart culture has contributed to golfers not fixing pitchmarks. We used to walk onto a green from the front, fix our pitchmark and proceed to mark the ball. Now most carts park behind the green, golfers tend to walk to their ball and not go to the front and look for their pitchmark.

9. Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf course to close one day per week for maintenance? I do not feel it should be mandatory to close once a week for maintenance, it would be nice though. To charge a player full price to play while dusting on is not fair, but in this current economic climate to close 52 days of the year is also not financially viable. That is where communication between the golf director and greenkeeper is vital as to when cultural practices can take place causing the least disruption.

12. People always complain about the inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how? Inconsistent bunkers especially on the coast is a big talking point. We lose sand because of wind and also sand moving within the bunker, then there is also rain and different types of sand. Very few of our coastal courses have properly constructed bunkers, filled with silica sand, as the cost is to high so we have holes filled with sand from a local supplier. I have now taken one of my staff and put him permanantly on bunkers. He rakes daily and then I have spread the bunkers over a 5 day week so that he can inspect each bunker every week. This has led to a big improvement in overall consistency.

10. Do maintenance staff come to conflict with golfers and how do you deal with this? I am very fortunate that my staff have been commended for their happy demeanour. They always wave and smile. We rely on the tourist trade and the way the staff treat them is a large part of the package in selling our product. I constantly drive the staff to exceed expectations not only in their work but in dealing with the public. 11. How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately vs only a couple of days or week later? I am not a great advocate for replacing divots especially on the coast. Very seldom enough of the grass is removed to start growing again and in replacing it you end up with a dead piece

He also touched on the general growth of golf around the country which is very exciting for our industry. The number of hours that gets put in, all the three o’clock early mornings and the attention to detail is quite fascinating. We also had the privilege of a quick 9- holes around Lost City before we enjoyed a late lunch at the Shebeen, one of Sun City’s unique restaurant facilities. After a delicious meal and an all-round fantastic day, it was time to head back to the bus and return to Gauteng.

SPECIAL FEATURE - A T R I C KY T I M E O F YE A R

A tricky time of year By: Sue de Zwart Producing your ultimate playing surface with Talking Turf It is this time of year where you truly reap the benefits of spring treatment & sound cultural practises. It is a time of high rainfall or heat & wind. The plant is under stress one way or another. Moisture management remains a critical component in determining your playing surface quality. We rely on our tools Qualibra (holds 21 % more moisture in the root zone as well as moves water off the playing surface) & Ryder (helps the plant hope with heat or cold stress) Ensure your greens are freely draining – particularly if they are close to a dam. If your green is draining into a dam & the drainage outlet is under water it is time to install a simple sump pump. They are truly simple to build & hassle free to maintain. A poorly draining green brings numerous complications: Moss – best to hand weed this the minute you see it as it spreads like wild fire. Algae – reduce water, regular spiking (every 21 days of a needle tyne), dusting (every 21 days) In dry weather you can rub humic powder onto your algae areas – this is very effective & so is Daconil Weatherstik.

98

Disease prevention: 1. Reduce your leaf wetness period is critical as dew is full of nutrient rich exudates. If you are not mowing for some reason then you need to roll, wip off the dew or remove it by dragging a hose pipe. Greens should be mowed at least 6 days per week. 2. Sound nutrition according to your latest soil analysis – this is my passion & I will gladly assist clubs with this. 3. Moisture management using a basic moisture meter at the very least – guessing is inconsistent & dangerous. 4. Preventative fungicide applications that do not affect beneficial insects, birds or mammals. By running a sound IPM you will save your club money in the long run & produce a more consistent playing surface.

5. Mow at a reasonable height 3-4mm and apply Primo Maxx to give you consistent speed for the morning & afternoon fields. Improve rooting, density & playability. I have worked with this product on every turf type since 1996 & it truly is the silver bullet to taking your turf to a new level. 6. Spiking & dusting every 21 days (this breaks down thatch & leads to a great firm playing surface). It also protects the crown from diseases like anthracnose. 7. Cultural practises – I love a 12mm hollow tyne in spring & a 8-12 mm hollow tyne in autumn. Thatch is the breeding ground for disease & insects. In order to break down the thatch you need to pull a core and broom sand (preferably by hand) into each hole. The surface should be free of sand once you are done brooming in the sand.

Anthracnose Hyphae The minute you see something starting whether it be moss, algae, disease react immediately. The longer you leave issues the longer your recovery period will be. Let’s make 2022 our best year yet to produce your ultimate playing surface.

Pythium is the dollar spot of wet weather – these two diseases are so easy to confuse yet best we don’t make this error. This makes your early morning dew checks even more critical. Dollar spot you can pick up by the mycelium (spider webs) in the dew & they are larger spots (roughly the size of a R5 coin). Pythium blight starts as smaller spots which can feel slimy. Anthracnose loves this time of year on cool season & paspalum greens
