It’s important to feel confident whilst playing golf and wearing the right attire is part of that.

On the PGA tour all the professionals look smart and cool in their golfing gear and the women on the LPGA tour always look great in their stylish, often colourful golf gear.

However, I think the clothing that some players wear is inappropriate. For instance, ankle-baring trousers, hoodies and sneakers should be banned. I know if we turned up to play in something similar, we wouldn’t’ be allowed on the course. Indeed, no golf course I know would allow such attire.

I think the various Tours have a responsibility to golfers, particularly junior golfers, to stop the wearing of this inappropriate clothing on the golf course. There are traditions after all and if most pros are prepared to dress in appropriate golfing attire, shouldn’t everyone else be made to follow suit? It’s a poor example in my view.

Regards

Dear Sam

Traditions were often set in the past by people with a very different mindset and I think we would do well, in every aspect of life, to question the origins of many traditions especially when they appear to limit some people’s freedom of choice.

Women golfers are no longer wearing long, tweed skirts and presumably, the change to trousers and other types of clothing caused great controversy.

Golf equipment, courses and even the rules are changing and evolving so why shouldn’t dress codes?

Regards

Improve your golf game

Are you playing with the right golf ball?

How many times do you walk into a golf pro shop and the first thing you notice is a huge display of shiny boxes and a variety of brand new golf balls you have never heard of before?

Most social golfers go for the colourful, or to be fair cheapest golf ball, without realising that selecting the right golf ball can make a critical impact to their game. There are many different factors to consider when selecting and buying golf balls. These range from:

• Trajectory

• Spin

Performance Tip brought to you by Michelle Steyn –BSI Golf Coach

• Spin and control on greens

• Distance

• Compression

• Feel

Thus, selecting the right golf ball is very important for maximum performance and enjoyment.

As there are different levels of golfers, so does each ball selection differ:

If you are a beginner with a slower swing speed, the recommendation for the best ball to play with would be a ball that is designed for distance and durability. Playing with a ball with lower compression will definitely benefit your game and support the slower swing speeds.

The Srixon Soft Feel is a great ball to start off your game

Intermediate golfers should consider playing with a give them more spin and control on the with a softer cover that will allow more with a ball with a medium compression not only good balance but also the everyone is aiming for.

The Srixon Q-star Tour with 3 layers and softer feel is a great ball for intermediate golfer

ASHLEIGH BUHAI CLINCHES SECOND LPGA TITLE AND FOURTH VICTORY WORLDWIDE IN LESS THAN A YEAR

Ashleigh Buhai won for the fourth time worldwide in 10 months when she collected her second LPGA victory at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

The 34-year-old, the oldest player to win on tour this season, played more than 200 tournaments on the LPGA before breaking through with her first title at the 2022 AIG Women’s British Open at Muirfield.

“I had the same feelings as Muirfield except I was able to hold it down the stretch a little bit,” said Buhai, “which was something that … only comes from experience.”

Buhai, who won the Australian Women’s Open last December and the South African Women’s Open in

March, becomes only the second South African with multiple LPGA wins, following Sally Little (15).

“Definitely the best golf I’ve played in my career,” said Buhai, who celebrated on the 18th with husband David, who caddies on tour for Jeongeun Lee6. “I think we have found a good balance. I’m on the older side on tour nowadays, one of the veterans.”

The former prodigy credited much of her success to her work with sports psychologist Duncan McCarthy.

“I really only have one thought with everything,” said Buhai. “I have one thought with the swing, one thought with the chipping, one thought with the putting, and I just tried and do that over and over.

John Collier Survey

BLAIR ATHOLL IS SOUTH AFRICA’S TOP CLUB

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5 June each year and its intention is to stimulate awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and public action. Since its inception in 1974, this is the United Nation’s most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness, for doing something to take care of the Earth. That ‘something’ can have a local, national or global focus.

In addition to marking WED, it is also appropriate to celebrate with BLAIR ATHOLL GOLF AND EQUESTRIAN ESTATE on its achievement of winning the 2023 John Collier TOP CLUB Award for good governance and environmental compliance for South African golf courses and a Special Mention Award to Elements Private Reserve.

What BLAIR ATHOLL did so well in its survey was to emphasise not only the physical, tangible aspects of good governance and environmental compliance, which is underpinned by its ethos of environmental stewardship of the land, water, river, fauna and flora. Furthermore, BLAIR

ATHOLL demonstrated a determined and consistent effort, not only to protect and manage the environment in general, but also in protecting the beautiful natural landscape, around the estate.

BLAIR ATHOLL’S commitment to its environmental stewardship role sets a benchmark that many clubs in South Africa should want to emulate.

Notwithstanding BLAIR ATHOLL’s award, special mention must also be made of the Elements Private Reserve, and their efforts towards environmental sustainability.

Winning a TOP CLUB AWARD is achieved through the support of committed and passionate people, who wholly embrace the benefits of good governance and environmental compliance. Therefore, special congratulations must go to the BLAIR ATHOLL’s Chairperson Cindy Page, its governing body, members and residents, the Club Captain Roelf Odendaal, the General Manager Steve van Greunen, The Golf Director Paul Marks, and Golf Course Superintendent Jan-Hendrik Duvenage, and their respective teams.

YOUR

GENERAL MANAGER

1. You have been in the hospitality industry for a long time. What made you choose this career?

I have been in the hospitality business for 34 years. I have loved every minute and would not change the experience for the world. Every day is different, and every day presents a unique challenge. My career begun at Mikes Kitchen in Umhlanga through the course of my studies. Experiencing the bustle of a busy restaurant, the efficiency of a well-oiled team and the genuine appreciation from patrons after a memorable experience was all the fuel I craved.

My Hospitality portfolio spans Restaurants in KZN, Theme Parks in Cape Town and Kuwait, I have worked with Sheiks in Saudi Arabia and have opened and expanded the offerings of both Atlantic Beach Golf Club and Simbithi Country Club. I enjoy creating the experience on every level.

2. Who has been your Biggest Mentor?

William Taylor (Bill) has been my mentor since 1999. I met Bill when he was working at Mt Edgecombe Country Club and our friendship grew from there. To the “Oldies” in the industry

they will all know who he is. He taught me all about the private Club Business and what it meant to deliver superior service and consistent product. The “What have you done for me lately” philosophy has stuck with me since. To this day he continues to inspire me and is now the COO of Liberty National Golf Club New Jersey NY.

3. Describe a typical workday for you at Simbithi?

Managing and touching base with my staff is my priority. Understand challenges and where our focus needs to be for the day is important to ensure we are all on the same page. The focus then shifts to our Capital projects that we are currently undertaking at the Club. We have revamped our Fig Tree Restaurant. Drop Zone bar and have upgraded our deck and lower service area that overlooks the 18th fairway and green. We have also built a Members Service Centre and have invested R5.7 million into a 3-year Golf Course improvement upgrade for the club.

As of the middle of this year we are now focused on our biggest project to date which is the first phased upgrade to the Simbithi Country Club:

a R24 million-rand expansion to our sporting and food and beverage facilities that include Squash, Bowls, Paddle and a Lap bool as well as extending our current food and beverage offerings and our Tennis courts. Ensuring that these Capital projects remain on track and are completed on time and on budge currently occupies most of my hours.

4. What are your biggest challenges currently at Simbithi?

A few days ago, it was to ensure we had the support of our members to approve biggest capital project in Simbithi Country Club history. This took personal engagement sessions, webinars, the publishing of info packs and Q&A’s highlighting plans and featuring renderings and fly byes. We also made sure we chatted about the project whenever we could. The Simbithi Eco Estates homeowners’ association and our Operations teams are excited to deliver.

5. Has the hospitality industry grown in your opinion in the past three years?

I have been at Simbithi Country Club for just over three and a half years, they have been some of the most challenging I have every had to deal with. It certainly has evaluated all my experience. knowledge and resolve. Having to deal with COVID, The KZN Floods, unrest and continuous rolling blackouts have been just some of the MACRO challenges we all face.

6. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to Simbithi?

We follow a marketing strategy where we focus on our residents and members, they get the first bite of the proverbial apple. The 4 Ps of Marketing which are Product, Promotion, Price, and Place are always front and centre. By ensuring we offer a product that has quality, is effectively communicated, competitively priced

and is positioned correctly gives us the ability to conduct a well-orchestrated event. We have a saying “Plan the work and work the plan.

7. In your opinion what factors contribute to excellent customer service and keeping your standards high?

My philosophy consists of the three basics of service which is “Warm Welcome, Magic Moment and Fond Farewell” If you can deliver on all three fronts you have created an experience where the patron has felt welcomed, lived the expectation and has been provided with a personal memory. If you can maintain that philosophy in all your offerings you will succeed and the strongest marketing tool, word of mouth will ensure the business will flourish.

8. What are your short-term goal & long-term goals?

Short terms goals for now are to get our Sports Precinct over the line which should take 14 – 18 months. Long Term Goals is to keep working towards our mission of being the Pre -Eminent residential Eco Estate in Southern Africa .

9. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Family is important and time spent creating memories is priceless. Fortunately, we all love the sea and the outdoors so swimming and hiking always features high on the time out list. Playing a whole bunch of different sports with my little guy or cooking up a storm in the kitchen is also firm favourites.

10. Do you still get time to play a round of golf?

We are lucky in that Simbithi is an Executive course so time spent (well for me mostly in the bushes) is challenging but time efficient, Sadly I do not get to play as much as I would like to. With the unpresented growth that has occurred at our Club. Mrs Simbithi has kept me busy. But I relish its day-to-day challenges.

FRADE CLAIMS SEASON-OPENER IN A PLAY-OFF AT RANDPARK

Nicholas Frade showed some big-match temperament as he claimed a come-from-behind victory after the first playoff hole in the final round of the season-opening Altron Big Easy Tournament at Randpark Golf Club.

Along with Pecanwood Golf Estate’s Slade Pickering and Vryburg Golf Club’s Leon Vorster, Frade finished the tournament on 14-under-par in regulation, necessitating a playoff to decide the winner of this first event of the new season.

Coming into the final round, the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington golfer was two shots off Leon Vorster and Allister de Kock’s lead and knew that an unrelenting push in the closing round would give him a fair chance at victory.

As he had done in the previous round, Frade was meticulous and deliberate in every shot he played, resulting in a second successive five-under 67 which placed him in a three-way share of the lead with

Vorster and Pickering.

Pickering was first off the tee in sudden death, sending his tee shot left and into the trees lining the 18th fairway on the Bushwillow track. Vorster, too, pushed his tee shot left and into trees while Frade found the fairway and a clear view of the 18th green. His second shot was just as impressive as he easily found the green, leaving him about two meters from the flag.

Vorster manufactured a beautiful shot out of the trees to find the green while Pickering’s second ball landed on the fringe behind the green. Pickering’s third shot was well-weighted and stopped half a meter from the flag. Vorster also failed to make a birdie with his third shot, leaving Frade with a glorious opportunity to make a birdie and claim the win.

Frade is no stranger to a Sunshine Tour winner’s circle. He claimed his first win of any Sunshine

Tour-sanctioned event in the Blue Label series last year at Modderfontein. The Blue Label Series is another avenue the Sunshine Tour established to maximise playing opportunities for players who are not eligible for a start on the main Tour.

Having secured his Sunshine Tour privileges after a successful Altron Big Easy Tour campaign last term, Frade will be eager to take the confidence with which a victory comes into the next tournaments he plays.

VAN WYK TAKES AMATEUR QUALIFIER HONOURS

George amateur Ben van Wyk continued the country’s proud tradition in the prestigious Amateur Championship when he became the third South African in the last six years to win the 36-hole Stroke Play Qualifier in England last month.

Following in the footsteps of GolfRSA National Squad graduates Wilco Nienaber (2018) and Jono Broomhead (2022), the 22-year-old University of Georgia senior led from start to finish.

Van Wyk produced a masterclass in his debut in the 128th Amateur Championship, firing seven birdies on the back nine at Hillside GC for an eight-under-par 64 and a one-shot lead in the first round.

Staying patient in the sweeping rain over the final round, the World No 88 turned in one-over but he rallied with a flurry of four birdies over the last six holes for a three-under-par 68 to retain pole position.

The 288-man international field battled for supremacy, and survival, in England’s north-west, with Eliot Baker from England and Swiss golfer Ronan Kleu getting within a shot of Van Wyk, but neither could match or better the Fancourt

golfer’s 11-under total of 132.

“I am happy with the result, because it was real tough in the beginning,” said Van Wyk, who recently earned All-American honours. “You have to accept pars and just try and make the long putts. I just stayed patient, stuck in there, made a few good pars and heated up on the back nine.

“I hit it straight off the tee and I’ve always putted well. I’ve been working a lot on my iron play and if the irons are good, I’m going to have birdie looks. They have just fallen this week.”

Van Wyk also credited his caddie, Norman Seton, for keeping him focussed.

“It has been great to have my best friend on the bag. He helped me simplify the game. He is also from George. Growing up, since we were like 10, he’s always played well. He always beat me when we were younger. It’s nice to get him back. He is on my bag and he’s actually my mental coach and all those things. It’s very impressive for a young age and he helped me for sure a lot on the course.”

SA’S LAMPRECHT CLAIMS THE AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

“I tried to stay in my zone the last couple of holes because Ronan was playing good and fighting back hard. It hasn’t sunk in yet, but it feels good. I guess South Africans like playing links golf. We kind of like being creative, so I guess that flowed over into this Championship. I cannot comprehend my feelings right now. I’m just over the moon.”

With the biggest victory of his career, the towering 22-year-old earned exemptions into The 151st Open at Royal Liverpool, the 2024 U.S. Open, and, by tradition, an invitation to play in the Masters Tournament next year. He also joined a Championship roll of honour which includes legends of the game like Bobby Jones, Sir Michael Bonallack, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia.

Christo Lamprecht continued South Africa’s proud history in The Amateur Championship when he became the fourth winner – and third GolfRSA National Squad champion in the last six years – to lift one of the most prestigious trophies in the amateur game.

The World No 6 defeated Ronan Kleu from Switzerland 3 & 2 in a thrilling 36-hole final to win the 128th edition in front of large crowds in what was an exciting contest at Hillside GC in June.

Now, Lamprecht has done South Africa, and GolfRSA, proud again.

“I’m just over the moon,” said Lamprecht, whose affinity for Links courses previously netted him victories in the 2017 South African Amateur at Humewood and the 2018 East of Ireland Amateur at County Lowth GC. “I haven’t kind of won something big in a long time and it’s the one to win for sure. I’m ecstatic. It’s always nice to be part of history with South Africa and to enrich that history and I just love my country.

“It’s tough to even think about the Majors right now. My biggest goal this year was to try and qualify for a Major before I turn pro to get that experience, and now I’m into three. It’s the biggest of milestone I’ve achieved. I’m not going to lie, to get into three is pretty amazing.”

Lamprecht was full of praise for his caddie, fellow GolfRSA National Squad player and International Arnold Palmer Cup teammate Christiaan Maas. The 2022 Brabazon Trophy champion was also on the bag for Potgieter when he won 12 months ago.

“The word caddie is insulting him a little bit, because Christiaan is an amazing golfer in his own right and he is going to do amazing things and probably going to win this championship, as well, in my opinion,” Lamprecht said. “We kind of play golf very similarly and kind of approach the game the same way, and he has a bit of experience, so having him on there for an extra bit of advice was amazing.”

WHY TOUR ROOKIE ERIC COLE DROVE OVERNIGHT TO PLAY (AND WIN) A MINI-TOUR EVENT

PGA TOUR rookie Eric Cole, son of South African golfer Bobby Cole has earned nearly $3 million this season.

But it’s perhaps a $20,000 winner’s check that means the most.

In a golf season that has been anything but conventional, Cole took one of the year’s most unconventional journeys – an overnight 480-mile drive from Connecticut to western Pennsylvania to play (and win) the final Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational, an event that once kept his career afloat.

After finishing T24 at the Travelers, his 10th straight week on TOUR, Cole embarked on a seven-anda-half-hour journey to play the Frank B. Fuhrer Jr. Invitational, a mini-tour event with significance that dates to his time in golf’s hinterlands.

Back in 2014, Fuhrer Jr. gave Cole a spot in the field. At the time, Cole was a struggling mini-tour player without much status to speak of. He paid the tournament entry fee on a credit card. He won.

The $40,000 winner’s check provided a catalyst for his professional career. He paid off the entry fee and suddenly had a cushion for subsequent entry fees and the typical expenses of a mini-tour pro. Essentially, it allowed him to keep going.

This marked the final edition of the event. Cole had played it every year since, and he was intent on seeing the streak through.

“Mr. Fuhrer passed away last year … this was the last year of his tournament, so I felt like it was a really important thing for me to be there and play in it,” Cole said. “It was cool to be part of the last edition of his tournament. To be there, one, and then to win the last edition of his tournament was awesome.”

Depending on which way you travel, the distance between East London and Port Elizabeth is roughly 300 kilometres. This is a remarkable part of our country as it offers pristine beaches and some of the best Game Reserves that South Africa has to offer.

EAST LONDON GOLF CLUB is 130 years old this year.

A traditional course layout set amongst hills, dunes and coastal indigenous bush. ELGC has a combination of both links and parkland features. The course is also home to a variety of buck, the Knysna Loerie and other species of bird life. ELGC has retained – over the years – a position of high recognition as one of the best Championship courses in South Africa and is a “bucket list” golf course.

KATBERG ECO GOLF ESTATE, truly a hidden gem of the Winterberg Mountains in the Eastern Cape

Set on a spectacular 400-hectare estate this mountain getaway combines luxury self-catering accommodation, an 18-hole championship golf course and majestically scenic surroundings that encourage relaxation. This relatively new estate and golf course has emerged and since been established as a must-visit destination in the Eastern Cape.

The Katberg Eco Golf Estate offers a secure child friendly environment, club house, equestrian centre, Katberg Mountain Spa and a variety of leisure attractions. The Katberg Manor Golf Club House facilities include a restaurant and bar, tennis courts, swimming pool and Pro-shop.

Nestled at the base of the Katberg Mountains, which makes up part of the Winterberg Mountain range, this golf course has been placed in the top 100 golf courses of South Africa and welcomes returning touring groups and IPT tournaments annually.

The challenge on the 18-hole classic country style championship golf course is keeping your head down –surrounding views are spectacular! This magnificent site inspired Golf Data to design a course tuned to the natural lie of the land.

The 6300m par 72 course, with 4 par 3’s and 4 par 5’s, presents challenging but balanced golf. Under full satellite irrigation, kikuyu fairways and bent grass greens flow with the natural undulating contours of the land. Bunkering adds to the intricate strategy of each hole. The beauty of the course culminates at a waterfall between the 17th and 18th holes.

When visiting Katberg Eco Golf Estate you have an option of spacious self-catering golf villa

bedrooms, sleeping 4 to 8 people, and are fully equipped with televisions, dishwashers and other modern conveniences to meet your every need. With cosy indoor gas fireplaces for those chilly evenings and a braai on the outdoor patio for sunny days these villas can be enjoyed year-round. A home away from home for your family or golfing group.

The surrounding area has a number of attractions including a local nature reserve and some of South Africa’s best trout fishing at the nearby Thrift Dam on the plateau of the Winterberg Mountains. This region is steeped in Frontier history and the story of its original inhabitants unfolds in the delicate San rock art along nearby cave walls.

From family vacations to an ideal venue for corporate golf days this tranquil mountain retreat is located only a 2-hour drive from East London and 2 hours 30 minutes from Port Elizabeth.

As part of the Kat Leisure Hotel Group with hotels located in East London, neighbouring Hogsback, Queenstown and Knysna we look forward to welcoming you.

In 1923 a visitor described the course as “A monument to the origins of golf played on a South African links next to a southern sea” Not much has changed since then.

The undulating course snakes its way through thickets of pristine coastal forest and over hilly dunes always with the smell and sounds of the Indian Ocean close by whose blue waters offer the most panoramic views from many of the fairways. In true links tradition every slope, mound and dip remains untouched, demanding creative shot making and deft reading of angles. Adding to the allure and charm of the course is its resident wild life. Normally shy bushbuck will continue grazing contently as you walk by while springbok and impala pronk with delight. The blesbok, fallow deer duiker and giant tortoise peer at the golfers with suspicion and there is bird life in abundance. Come and see for yourself.

Port Elizabeth Golf Club: A Family-Driven Oasis of Fun, Music, and Exceptional Service

Port Elizabeth Golf Club (PEGC), founded in 1890, holds a treasured place as one of South Africa’s oldest and most beloved golf clubs. Nestled in the heart of the city, this parkland gem, affectionately known as “The Hill,” has stood witness to countless championships, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s golfing landscape.

Steeped in rich history, PEGC’s story stretches back to November 1902, when golf first graced the fairways of this Mill Park venue. In 1917, it became an even more iconic site as it welcomed the first aircraft to land in Port Elizabeth, with the wooden propeller from that historic flight still proudly displayed in the clubhouse. This heritage and charm have resonated throughout the years, fostering a deep connection between the club and the community it serves.

In 2001/2002, PEGC underwent a remarkable transformation led by renowned architects Danie Obermeyer and Philip Basson of Golfscape. The course saw a comprehensive upgrade, including rebuilding and contouring the greens, introducing modern bunkering, and adding two captivating new holes. These enhancements, which reduced the par from 73 to 72, have cemented PEGC as a challenging yet exhilarating test of golfing prowess, especially when the wind makes its presence known.

A testament to its enduring legacy, PEGC has played host to prestigious events such as the SA Boys Championship in 2004, where the talented Anton Haig emerged victorious. The club’s back nine boasts an exceptional collection of holes, with a captivating finishing stretch that lures players into a world of strategic shot-making.

From the dogleg right par 4 at 15 to the enticingly short par 4 at 16, followed by the water-hazard par 3 at 17, and finally, the unforgettable dogleg left par 5 18th, PEGC ensures that every swing counts, with the potential for eagle heroics to decide memorable tournaments.

However, PEGC’s appeal extends far beyond its challenging layout. It has embraced its status as the busiest and most popular golf club in the Eastern Cape, offering affordable membership options with convenient monthly payments. Moreover, PEGC understands the importance of creating a vibrant atmosphere that caters to the entire family.

Nestled next to the halfway house, the lively coffee shop known as Jack’s Bagels has become a favourite gathering spot for members and visitors alike. Offering a warm and welcoming ambience, it serves as a hub of social activity on weekends and early weekday mornings. The tantalising aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the laughter and camaraderie, creating a sense of community that sets PEGC apart.

To further elevate the experience, PEGC has introduced live music Fridays, where the vibrant sounds of talented local artists fill the air, enhancing the festive spirit of the club. Whether enjoying a relaxing round of golf, savouring delectable cuisine at the clubhouse, or tapping your feet to the rhythm of live melodies, PEGC ensures that every visit is imbued with a sense of joy, belonging, and shared experiences.

Wedgewood Golf & Country estate

Members of the Port Elizabeth Jewish community established Wedgewood Park Country Club in 1949 and it was named in honour of British politician Josiah Clement Wedgwood, a strong campaigner for social justice who was also instrumental in saving the lives of many Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Europe in the 1930s.

The last game of golf on the old Wedgewood Park Country Club course was played in April 2007. The re-design and re-construction of the layout began shortly thereafter.

Sean Quinn of Golf Data designed the golf course, and it was opened in 2013, built on the same land as the old Wedgwood Country Club and the sporting focal point of a residential development. Several new lakes have been installed on the front nine to enhance the scenery and raise the strategic challenge. Many of the original playing corridors have been altered on the more undulating back nine, with only the new 12th and 13th (the old 15th and 16th) remaining largely intact.

Located just outside of Port Elizabeth, Wedgewood Golf & Country Estate is a major attraction for golfers in the Eastern Cape, featuring bent grass greens that can compete against any golf course in the country. Although not the longest course, it is a challenge for all handicap players. It offers a lot of birdie opportunities on a good day but can bite back just as quickly if you are not careful.

Wedgewood is the home of the Eastern Province Strokeplay, a national event that is well supported and enjoyed by top amateurs from all around the country.

The estate is growing every day with +- 100 houses and plenty more under construction. Future plans include a driving range, gym, hotel, tennis courts, swimming pools, restaurants and many more attractions to ensure that residents and visitors don’t need to leave the estate to enjoy a good time.

SPECIAL FEATURE - EL TO PE

Wedgewood Golf and Country Estate is on the rapid growing outskirts of Port Elizabeth. A brand new shopping mall, top schools and a fast growing network of residential estates promise owners a bustling extension of Port Elizabeth City in the near future. What makes Wedgewood different? BERNHARD LANGER WINS U.S. SENIOR OPEN TO BREAK PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS RECORD

Bernhard Langer claimed a record-breaking 46th PGA Tour Champions title with victory at the U.S. Senior Open. The German had been tied with Hale Irwin for the most wins for a player on the American over-50s circuit since he won the Chubb Classic for a record fifth time in February.

Holding a two-shot lead heading into the final round at SentryWorld in Wisconsin, Langer carded a one-under-par 70 to claim a two-shot victory over Steve Stricker.

With his 12th senior Major title, and the

65-year-old becomes the oldest player to win on the PGA Tour Champions, extending his record for both.

“It feels awesome,” Langer said. “It’s been a long time coming, but very, very happy.

“Never thought it would happen at a U.S. Senior Open, but I’m very thrilled that the record of 46 wins happened this week.

“It’s certainly one of the greatest tournaments we ever compete in, and to beat this field,

where everybody was here, especially Stricker and [Jerry] Kelly on their home grounds, is a very special feeling. Very grateful.”

Two-time Masters Champion Langer seized control on Sunday with birdies at his first two holes and three of his first five before another gain at the ninth saw him stretch his lead to six shots. Despite bogeying his final three holes, it did not prevent him celebrating a deserved victory.

Fellow former Ryder Cup Captain Stricker, who was

bidding to make history of his own by becoming the first player to win the first three senior Majors of a season, was among those quick to pay credit to Langer’s achievement.

“It’s amazing, isn’t it? All-time win record, and now 12 majors,” Stricker said.

“He’s going strong at - what is he, 65 or 66? Sixty-five.

“It gives all of us hope, I guess, that are out here still playing that we can continue to play as good as he’s played for such a long time. It’s really impressive.”

SUNSHINE TOUR RELEASES SCHEDULE FOR NEW BIG EASY TOUR SEASON

Following the successful return of the Altron Big Easy Tour to the local golfing scene last year, the Sunshine Tour has released a 12-tournament schedule for the 2023/24 season.

This is an increase of two tournaments more than last year’s schedule, thereby creating more opportunities for the players to compete at a high level.

Having secured the sponsorship of IT solutions giant, Altron, when the Tour returned under the commissioning of professional golf’s mother body, the Sunshine Tour, the second season of this developmental tour begins this July.

With each tournament carrying a total of R150 000 and the final R300 000 in prize money, the first event tees off on the Bushwillow layout at Randpark Golf Club on July 4 while the second will be played at Reading Country Club in the East Rand, Gauteng, a week later.

The historic Soweto Country Club will host the third event of the season from August 1 before Kyalami Country Club gets its own piece of professional golf action a month later. The two venues, along with Blue Valley Golf Estate, are hosting Altron Big Easy Tour events for the second successive time each after they all played hosts last year. The year will close off with Blue Valley hosting the fifth tournament of the season before the Christmas break in November.

In the new year, Dainfern Country Club will host the sixth event in the second week of January while

Waterkloof Golf Club in Pretoria will be the next destination. The East Rand will be the next stop as Benoni Country Club hosts the seventh event before the playoffs.

Just as it was in the previous season, Centurion Country Club returns to the calendar and will again host the playoffs early in April before the season-ending event returns to Country Club Johannesburg – Rocklands for the grand finale which carries R300 000 in prize money. The two venues for the new tournaments are yet to be confirmed but will certainly be held in Gauteng too.

“The rerun of the Altron Big Easy Tour to the main golfing scene last year proved to be a great success for the Tour and our sponsor,” said Sunshine Tour Tournament Director, Ludwick Manyama.

“Through a tough period economically, our main sponsors, Altron, were able to see our vision of turning this developmental tour into a professional series which benefited our players immensely. We had a full schedule with 10 events and this season won’t be much different.

“We anticipate a total of 12 tournaments for this season to provide further playing opportunities for the players, especially those who aren’t eligible to play on the main Sunshine Tour circuit. We are grateful to our sponsors because their contributions help us realise our vision of making golf accessible.”

The Big Easy Tour was founded in 2011 and enjoys the support of Ernie Els among other greats.

ALDRICH POTGIETER MAKES AN ALBATROSS AT THE JOHN DEERE CLASSIC QUALIFIER

18-year-old Aldrich Potgieter hit a hole-in-one on a 345-yard Par 4 at the John Deere Classic Monday Qualifier. It happened at Pinnacle CC in Milan, Illinois.. Unfortunately, Potgieter missed qualifying by 1 stroke.

There has been just one par-4 hole-in-one recorded in PGA Tour-sanctioned competition, Andrew Magee on the 17th hole at the 2001 WM Phoenix Open. Potgieter’s won’t count in the record books, but for an intriguing young talent who won last year’s The Amateur Championship at age 17, it’s another tale for the lore.

The albatross moved Potgieter to 6-under through eight holes, after making four birdies against a bogey in his first seven. He played his last 10 in even-par to card 6-under 66 and keep a puncher’s chance at a tee time at TPC Deere Run, ultimately finishing one shot away.

Potgieter’s standing is quickly rising in the golf world. Last year, he became the second-youngest winner of The Amateur, an event that dates back to 1885. He made the cut at last month’s U.S. Open, averaging more than 190 mph ball speed. The following week, he competed in the Korn Ferry Tour’s Compliance Solutions Championship, finishing T35.

MICHELLE WIE WEST RETIRES

After making a splash at the Sony Open in Hawaii at age 14, Wie West will walk away after this week’s U.S. Women’s Open.

Michelle Wie West made her career on the LPGA Tour and was among her LPGA peers as she spoke about calling it a career after this week’s U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach.

But what she said on the dais echoed back to her eight PGA TOUR starts.

What, she was asked, would be her legacy?

“Ooh, I think that one word comes to mind: Bold,” Wie West said. “Made a lot of bold choices in my career, and I’m proud of it. I’m proud of being fearless at times and just doing what felt right. I hope that I inspire a lot of other girls to make bold and fearless decisions and choices in their careers, as well.”

Her career highlight came at the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open, one of her five LPGA wins, but she was never more bold and fearless than at the 2004 Sony Open in Hawaii. Still just a 14-year-old ninth grader at Oahu’s Punahou School, Wie West, a sponsor exemption, shot 72-68 to miss the cut by one, turning the golf world upside-down.

“Just one more shot and I would have made it,” she said that day. “It’s killing me now.”

Such was the buzz of her Sony surprise that Sports Illustrated even made comparisons to Tiger Woods, who had missed the cut by six in his first TOUR start, at the 1992 L.A. Open (Genesis Invitational), at age 16.

Wie West was already 6 feet tall, and her 300-yard drives were helping her reach par-5s in two. She beat 47 of the men that week at Waialae CC, including 18 PGA TOUR winners. She tied Jim Furyk. Her nickname, “The Big Wiesy,” alluded to her Ernie Els-like tempo; their swings were uncannily similar.

“She can play on this TOUR,” said Els (the original Big Easy). “If she keeps working, doing the right things, there’s no reason why she shouldn’t be out here.”

“I went to a normal high school and none of my friends knew what I was doing,” she said from Pebble Beach this week, when asked if the public’s interest in new LPGA sensation Rose Zhang reminded her of those years. “So, it was

weird that we were at dinner and there was a camera there and people were coming up.”

Wie West spent most of her career on the LPGA, making a mark with five victories, including a major, despite coping with injuries. Now 33, she has myriad other interests, including fashion design, podcasting, and, she said from Pebble, making pickles from the cucumbers in her garden.

Those who saw her tee it up against the guys, though, won’t soon forget it.

“When I made the (retirement) announcement last year,” she said, “even still it was like, oh, I’m transitioning out, but I have Pebble. Now I don’t have anything in the foreseeable future, so it’s definitely an emotional week for me. I just realized everything I’m doing I’m doing for the last time.

Whatever happened

“Next up in our series of South African golf stars from the past is Hendrik Buhrmann. We chatted to Hendrik and asked him to take us through from where it all began, to what life was like on Tour and what he is up to today.

“I was born in Vereeniging but grew up on the farm Oudekraal, just south of Bloemfontein (where my sister still has a guest house). I went to school in Edenburg and then attended Grey College in Bloemfontein. After I matriculated, I went into the army.

“I started playing golf after injuring my ankle whilst playing rugby for Grey College. I wasn’t a top rugby player and I played in the C or D side but if you if you are at Grey, you must play a sport and I couldn’t play after a doctor advised that I give it a 2–3-week break. Some of the guys suggested that I try golf, which I must admit, I thought of at the time as a ‘sissy sport’.

“I played nine holes one afternoon with them at Tempe golf course and I saw that I was as good, if not better than them without even knowing the game. My ankle got better, and I went back to rugby and cricket, but I got the golf going a little bit. By the age of 17, I decided to take the game seriously as I realised that I could potentially be the top golfer at Grey. From there on I never looked back and at 21 years of age, I was the top amateur in the country.

“Becoming a professional golfer for had a junior career, the only junior at Royal Durban, so nobody knew was under 18 not under 19).

All these and we built really good relationhobbies as such; I like fishing but I’m profession. My passion is workbetter; how I can help people to next generation of young players.

“These days I am a professional golf coach based at Eagle Canyon. I focus not only the technical side but on performance, meaning, how can you get your technique in sync with your mind because the two-work hand in hand, like hardware and software you must get the two to be compatible with each other to maximize your opportunities to play the best golf you can.

“I’ve read nearly every book that there is about the mental side and with my experience as a professional golfer, I can assist my clients to be better and help them perform to their best.

“I still play now and again with friends and some juniors but not much. I played a little bit in the senior events this year, in Port Elizabeth I finished 10th. But I’m really focused on teaching more than playing, I love the game and I still play well enough.

“I would like to play more but you know golf takes so much time you can’t be a good coach and play a lot of golf, that doesn’t work. You must do either or and that’s the main reason why I don’t play that much.”

Welcome. Yo 're home.

& Golf Superintendent Knysna Golf Club

WITH ANDRE GERBER Q A

1. When did you realize that turf management was the industry you want to take further?

I started playing golf from a tender age of 9 years old and always loved dragging my dad out for 9 holes at George GC. I always wanted to be outside getting my hands dirty, and I guess that planted the seed. My first job was coincidently at George GC in 1995 where they wanted to employ two young guys to train and show the ropes – I was hooked!

2. What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?

It is an industry with many ups and downs. Through the years I have had the privilege to have some great young assistants and staff as part of my team and if I look back now at how successful they have become in their own managerial roles it gives me a great feeling knowing that I could have been part of their achievements.

Winter in the Western Cape can be a daunting couple of months with cold and wet weather persisting – It must be my worst feeling during the year when you see all the hard work you have put in during the year get set back by Mother Nature.

3. You are at Knysna GC, which is a fairly flat course and very close to the water level of the lagoon, what are your biggest challenges with the incoming and outgoing tides?

Knysna must be one of the flattest courses in the world, but being said; our lowest point on the course is 1.7m still above sea level. We decided to let the waterways be part of the natural estuary and the old “sluice” system was taken out. This allows water movement throughout the course and you won’t see any cleaner and more natural wetlands anywhere.

The whole course is part of the bigger Knysna Estuary which is the biggest protected water mass in South Africa and we try not to disturb nor disrupt this natural and aesthetically pleasing feature. My biggest challenge like most coastal courses is managing the salinity on the course and especially the greens. During summer months Knysna do get up to the late 30-degree mark and carefully planned agronomy programs must be followed.

4. Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country?

Absolutely ! It is not always just about the turf species that you have on your course, but also the design layout. My course being very flat do not need any machines with a 4x4 function compared to some course that have big undulations. Ideally one would have your lightest possible mowers on and around your greens and approaches to try and somehow keep wear and compaction to the minimum. Different bladed reels are very important, for example – your greens will have a unit with an 11 bladed reel as the turf is much finer than a fairway with thick kikuyu on. Here you will get away with 9 or even 7 bladed reels.

www.sagolftrader.co.za July | August 2023 86 SPECIAL FEATURE - ALL ABOUT GREENKEEPING

5. How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance?

I would say it sure does make a difference. 25 years ago we used to mow it, water it and fertilize it once a year and the rest was up to Mother Nature and a sharp eye on Attention to Detail. Working in the North of SA is completely different than working down the south between Cape Town to East London. Diseases are more active during the warmer seasons and winters are cold and wet. We do not have much rain during the summer months, whereas the courses up in the north enjoy some decent thunderstorms which take the pressure off the continued irrigation cycles.

and do a proper spring treatment – this is the only time of the year where we can get away with slow, sandy and bumpy greens for two to three weeks.

7. How important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately vs only a couple of days or week later?

On busy courses it is very important. Par 3’s always have the most pitch marks and it is a continued discussion throughout all clubs. More important to me is that golfers know how to repair a pitch mark and whether the course prefers divots to be replaced or rather to be filled with sand/topsoil depending on the turf types. In a nutshell – the sooner is is repaired or filled to quicker the recovery period.

8. People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers?

It must be understood that a bunker is a hazard which was put in place to penalize a bad shot and one cannot expect to have a perfect lie every time you hit a bad shot that is why we have beautiful fairways.

6. Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf course to close one day per week for maintenance?

For most courses this is just not feasible anymore. As a superintendent we have to start thinking outside the box and make time for our cultural practices when it will not interrupt with any possible income generating opportunities. There is nothing wrong with planning a little verti-cut, sand dusting or light solid tining or slicing behind the field of play on any given day. One might also consider to have a one tee start on a Monday with tee times from only 09h00 for instance to allow the maintenance crew to have 9 holes done before golfers start playing. The important thing for me is that when the course schedule course closures once or twice per year, that the opportunity is grabbed with both hands

Maintaining consistent bunkers have become more difficult, not only because of seasonal factors, but also due to budget constraints. Hands on monitoring of bunkers are the most effective and that is why I have always encouraged Superintendents to play golf and walk your course at least once a week. You can pick up on an inconsistent bunker immediately; whether there are too much sand in it or too little.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments.

Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too.

Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme

Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome.

We look forward to welcoming you soon!

KOEPKA GIVES UP ON MATTHEW WOLFF

According to a Sports Illustrated report, Koepka isn’t happy with fellow Smash GC member Matthew Wolff, who could be on the move following LIV Golf’s second season.

Wolff who won on the PGA Tour in just his third pro start in Summer 2019, has struggled over the past few years – and especially in recent months on the Saudi-backed circuit, which he joined a little over a year ago. He entered the event in London having not cracked the top 40 in his past five starts.

Wolff’s low point came during LIV’s event outside Washington, D.C., in May. After a pair of grueling team workouts before Rounds 2 and 3, both initiated by Koepka, Smash’s captain, Wolff, sitting 46th on the leaderboard, opted to withdraw prior to that Sunday’s final round, citing an undisclosed injury.

That decision apparently didn’t sit well with Koepka, and Wolff’s handles were later removed from Smash’s Twitter and Instagram pages.

While Wolff has continued to play under the Smash flag, in Spain and in London, that didn’t stop Koepka from publicly criticizing Wolff at Centurion GC

“I mean, when you quit on your round, you give up and stuff like that, that’s not competing,” Koepka told SI. “I’m not a big fan of that. You don’t work hard. It’s very tough. It’s very tough to have even like a team dynamic when you’ve got one guy that won’t work, one guy is not going to give any effort, he’s going to quit on the course, break clubs, gets down, bad body language, it’s very tough. I’ve basically given up on him – a lot of talent, but I mean the talent’s wasted.”

SNAKE ON THE COURSE! AUSSIE PLAYERS DISCOVER DEADLY CREATURE HIDING IN CUP

Golf in Australia just hits different.

Tiger snakes in bunkers, massive pythons eating wallabies in the middle of the fairway, and now, a lethal red-bellied beast lurking in the cup.

That’s right, some golfers were just minding their business in Sydney last month when they discovered a deadly red-bellied black snake hiding in the hole on the second green

Seeing as it’s currently summer Down Under, The Coast Golf and Recreation Club suspects the

creature was simply seeking shelter from the scorching summer heat, not trying to mount a sneak attack on unsuspecting players.

The 4-foot-long “little fella” chilled in the cup as a few groups came through before slithering on to its next oasis. In exchange for their understanding, the club offered all golfers two putts to move on to the next hole.

While the red-bellied black snake’s venom is potentially deadly to humans, there have been no recorded human deaths by bite from this particular species in Australia.

FICHARDT BACK IN WINNERS CIRCLE

Darren Fichardt is a winner on the European Challenge Tour for the first time after producing an outstanding finish to claim the Le Vaudreuil Golf Challenge title at Golf PGA France du Vaudreuil.

The South African, a five-time winner on the DP World Tour, saved his best golf of the week for the back nine, signing for a five under par round of 67 and a 15 under par total, two strokes ahead of Oliver Farr who finished in solo second on 13 under par.

“I haven’t won in a few years now and to come out here and win on such a beautiful, challenging golf course is awesome,” he said. “I’ve been working hard and have been playing pretty well but I’ve also been experimenting a lot.

“I was surprisingly very calm. I thought I could ease round in two under par today which I thought might get the job done, but I had to dig deep and I made a few really crucial putts. I’m very proud of myself.”

The South African was full of praise for Farr, admitting that they pushed each other all the way in Normandy.

“Oliver was playing very well and at one stage I was three back,” he added. “When you win a tournament you obviously want it to be easy, but when you have a battle like that, it’s so much more rewarding. I feel like I really won it, as it wasn’t given to me. Oliver definitely brought that to the day.

“I’ve been in this situation quite a few times and there’s no better way to get the job done, to show your opponent that you’re not falling off. You’re there on every single hole and you’re not going away.”

The win sees Fichardt catapult into 20th on the Road to Mallorca Rankings. Frenchman Ugo Coussaud remains in first place with Spaniard Manuel Elvira retaining second. Scalise climbed one place to third, Casey Jarvis dropped one place to fourth, and Swede Adam Blomme completes the top five.

RAHM RETURNS TO BMW PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Reigning Masters champion Jon Rahm will return to the BMW PGA Championship from September 12-17.

The double Major winner is aiming to add to his impressive record at the fourth Rolex Series event of the season, with runner-up finishes in his two previous BMW PGA Championship appearances in 2019 and 2022. He produced the round of the week last season with a remarkable closing 62 that included two eagles and seven birdies, to move from six shots back into a tie for second alongside Rory McIlroy, and one shot behind eventual winner Shane Lowry.

The World Number Two rounded out his 2022 DP World Tour season with two memorable victories, sealing an emotional win on home soil to emulate his hero Seve Ballesteros with a third acciona Open de España presented by Madrid title, before securing a third win at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship and a fifth Rolex Series title.

The 28-year-old carried that scintillating form into 2023, winning three PGA TOUR titles in five starts before triumphing at Augusta National in April to add a second Major title to his collection, after becoming the first Spaniard to win the U.S. Open in 2021.
