WINNING LETTER Hi Neville Something I always wonder about is how many people cheat at golf and I believe that many, many players do. For instance, have you ever taken a Mulligan? Ever decided to drop a ball near where you lost one, rather than hit a provisional from the tee? Or, maybe you’ve allowed yourself a “gimme” putt without your fellow player’s prior consent? A lot of players will not consider the aforementioned examples to be cheating, however– they are not in accordance with the rules. Yet, they happen, all the time out on the course, don’t they? “Don’t worry about it Rich, it’s the first drive of the day. Go ahead and take a Mulligan.” Or: “OK, I think my ball might be lost. Well, I’ll just drop one over here.” Most of us don’t even give these expressions a second thought. But according to the rules, they constitute cheating. But I guess that the devil lies in the details and whether or not one is playing for fun or not. What are your thoughts?

Thank you for writing in. I think that many casual golfers break numerous rules without even knowing it however I feel that more importantly perhaps in this environment is etiquette. Watch your positioning, mind your shadow, leave the course as you found it. This is really what the game is about and ultimately ensures that everyone has an enjoyable round. Before you tee off decide how seriously you are going to abide with the rules and if you are a hugely competitive group then make sure you know the rules and then stick to them. Otherwise don’t fret too much about the odd rule infringement (so long as your fellow players know about it and its within reason) and worry more about your overall conduct on the course. You will enjoy a beer at the end of the day knowing that you may have taken a mulligan but that your conduct was exemplary and that you played in the spirit of the game. Regards

Assad, Park & Dlamini through to LPGA Stage II 58th at four over 292 and Assad finished the gruelling four day test in a tie for 78th at six-over-par 294 in the group that closed out the top 92 competitors that advanced out of the Stage I Qualifying Tournament at Mission Hills CC to make the field for the Stage II Qualifier in October. Assad began her campaign with a 73 at the Dinah Shore Course and followed with rounds of 73 and 72 at the Arnold Palmer and Gary Player Courses. The final year Texas State University student closed with a 75 at the Dinah Shore Course secure a spot in the Stage II Qualifier at the Plantation G and CC from 17-23 October. Ekurhuleni amateur Lora Assad and Sunshine Ladies Tour campaigners Carrie Park and Nobuhle Dlamini all crossed the first hurdle in qualifying for the 2017 LPGA Tour in late August. Park sealed a top 20 finish at one-under-par 287, Dlamini grabbed a share of

PGA of SA ‘fourball’ shines in golf’s Olympic return PGA NEWS
Llewellyn van Leeuwen, head coach of the TuksSport Golf Academy and the PGA of South Africa’s 2015 Teaching Professional of the Year, is the man behind the swing of Brandon Stone who finished tied 55th in the first men’s Olympic golf competition in 112 years. And Doug Wood, head of the Wanna Be A Champion Golf Academy at Serengeti Golf Estate, coaches Ashleigh Simon who finished 50th in the women’s competition. “We are very proud of the contribution of our PGA professionals to the success of Team SA on such an historic occasion for world golf,” said Ivano Ficalbi, Chief Executive of the PGA of South Africa. “The game of golf was proudly exhibited to millions of people around the world who would never have viewed the sport before, and the success will lead to increased global participation.” Manyama said he was excited by what he saw in Rio and what it means for the future of golf at the Olympics. “It was a highlight of my career to be part of such an historic moment, and for me being the first South African rules official to achieve this was incredible. I think golf was a great success at the Olympics and there was a lot of interest in the competition. It

The PGA of South Africa celebrated a successful return of golf to the Olympic Games as two of its Honorary Life Members and two of its top coaches played a part in South Africa’s presence in the Rio showpiece. Grand Slam champion Gary Player was captain of the South African men’s and women’s golf teams, while internationally respected rules official Theo Manyama made history when he became the first South African rules official to officiate at the Olympic Games during the men’s golf competition.

So I believe there will be an even better response at the next Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.” For Van Leeuwen, Stone’s continued presence in golf’s biggest tournaments is a key part of building his confidence and “a sense of belonging” at the highest level of the game. “The moment Brandon realises that he is actually playing better golf than most of his rivals will be when he will start to finish consistently in the top ten or better in major tournaments,” said Van Leeuwen. And Wood believes Simon is very close to a breakthrough in her own game, saying shortly before her trip to Rio that, “I just have a feeling that she’s on the brink of a breakthrough”.

Get the right idea by Michael Balderstone Managing Director & Performance Director
O
ne of the key elements of our coaching at TGSE is to make sure that our students have the correct concept or idea about the shot at hand. An incorrect concept can hamper the development of a skill or technique, and prevent a successful execution of a shot. I had the privilege of chatting to Jack Nicklaus a few years ago and he explained that he always tried to make the game as easy as possible for himself. This is the essence of our philosophy on concepts. With this in mind here are a few key concepts about the short game:
you will rarely 3-putt as your line will never be too far away from correct. But if your pace is out, you may often find yourself with lengthy second or third putts. Most people are too focused on getting the line right and don’t realise that all great putters have great feel for pace.
Putting Pace is 99% of good putting. You may argue that the ball will not go in if the line isn’t correct. But there are always numerous lines that you can take and still hole a putt. The key is to match the line with the pace you want to roll it at, choosing your pace first, then the line. Do you want the ball to just fall into the hole or hit the back of the cup? If you develop great feel on the greens then

Chipping The idea here is to get the ball running on the green as soon as possible. All too often we see players flying the ball too high and too far in the air when there is plenty of green on which to run the ball. By taking the aerial route you give yourself more work to do (longer swing), put yourself under more pressure and leave yourself less margin for error. Hands up who wants to give themselves more work than they need to do. I thought not, but we see this time and again on the golf course. The correct procedure should be to pick the nearest available level landing area on the green, allowing a couple of metres from the fringe. Next figure out the trajectory that you need to hit the ball at, to land in this spot and roll to the hole. Visualise yourself throwing the ball to judge this. Once you have your desired landing area and trajectory you match this to the most suitable club. Practicing this with a variety of clubs can help save you many shots in a round.

Greenside Bunker Shot The idea of this shot is to present the bounce of the club to the sand, not the leading edge. Most people don’t know what it is and certainly don’t know what it does, but it is highly important. In a nutshell, the bounce on the sole is the angle between the back of the sole and the leading edge, and allows the club to slide through the sand instead of digging in. Chat to your local PGA Professional for advice on this. By opening the face we add bounce as well as loft to the club. In order to present the optimum bounce to the sand at impact, you need to swing the head so that it comes level with the hands (normally the hands are ahead of the club at impact). To do this you must let your right hand dominate the downswing, essentially early releasing the wrists as if you’re opening an upside down jar. Give it a try.

fter three marriages, a few flings and a divorce or two, BON Hotel Riviera on Vaal celebrates her ninetieth birthday this year and the hotel seems to be enjoying a new lease on life. The Vaal Triangle’s commercial success is steeped in the industrial history books, thanks to Mr Van der Bijl and his expansion of Iscor into Vereeniging. The city of Vereeniging was founded in 1892 and much of its early growth was due to the nearby coal mines. Thousands of jobs were created as a commercial and industrial surge was spearheaded to the area. In those days, the banks of the Vaal River became a hub of leisure activity, holiday homes and hotels popping up as early as the 1920s, and one that has become synonymous with water, fun, golf and the high-life was what is now called BON Hotel Riviera on Vaal. The hotel will be celebrating its Ninetieth birthday this year. Taking in sweeping views of the hotel and the Vaal River from the historic Riviera on Vaal clubhouse, which was developed in 1937 and designed by the legendary Sir Herbert Baker, one is only left to wonder if those walls could talk… The site where the Riviera on Vaal Country Club is situated today was initially built as a kiosk to service revellers to the river who were popping down for a swim, boat ride or picnic on the banks. So popular was the site that the old farmhouse was converted into a hotel in 1926. One certain American film maker, entrepreneur and developer, Isadore William Schlesinger, fell in love with the area and built the ‘ultra-modern’ Riviera Hotel - ultra-modern because it featured a bathroom in each room; this was a luxury unheard of in those years. Mr Schlesinger opened the doors to the hotel on 29 August 1936 and the rest, as they say, is history. The hotel was a popular leisure destination in the years before and after the Second World War. But from the 1960s, the hotel’s popularity declined and it was left neglected. Thankfully, the decrepit hotel was taken over by

the Behr family and in 1970 and a completely renovated version was opened. Mrs Cynthia Behr, clearly a very good hotelier, is owed the accolades for the hotel’s success during this period. People once again started flocking to the hotel over the weekends, to enjoy the river, the golf course and the spectacular food. Sunday dinner and a movie became a hit as South Africans did not have the privilege of television until 1976. The Riviera on Vaal Hotel was the place to be and be seen. The hotel, thanks to the Behr family survived the devastating floods of early 1975, when most of the low-lying areas of Vereeniging were completely submerged in water, including most of the hotel grounds and the entire adjacent golf course. Anyone who remembers The Bee Gees or Depeche Mode will also have a story or two to share of their wonderful times spent at Riviera on Vaal. In the late 70s and early 80s, as casino fever hit South Africa, the hotel enjoyed a short courtship with Sun International who were hoping to secure a gambling licence. It was then bought by Sir John Sherry, who enjoyed much of the beauty of the property during the 1990s – even building a bird park. As a river ebbs and flows, the Riviera Hotel’s popularity decreased dramatically in the 1990s and early 2000s and it was placed on auction in 2003 and bought by businessman Mac van der Merwe, who saw its potential. The entire grounds were completely renovated and reopened in 2004 as the golf course and hotel benefited from the new energy. BON Hotels, which is a South African-based company that owns and operates hotels, took over in 2013 and has raised it to new levels of popularity. Flanked by two golf courses (Riviera on Vaal and Maccauvlei Country Club), along the banks of the river, with a spa, kids’ club, river cruises and stunning restaurants, the hotel offers Gautengers a wonderful recreational venue situated right in their backyard.

The continued support of Coca-Cola and Sun International for a further three years is a resounding endorsement of a tournament that first teed off in 2000 as part of Gary Player’s vision to raise funds for underprivileged children in South Africa. The tournament has since grown to include a global series of six tournaments worldwide raising more than $62 million for charity. The Gary Player Invitational remains the single most influential series of charity golf tournaments in the game, travelling to Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Abu Dhabi and South Africa as part of Player’s quest to raise $100 million for underprivileged children. Following our annual month-long ‘Winter break’ on the Sunshine Tour, we teed it up at Wild Coast Sun Country Club and caught the South Coast weather Gods in a pretty foul mood. It was the first event in Vodacom’s Origins of Golf series for 2016, which is always a favourite among the players. The world-class venues and entertaining evening functions really make this series of tournaments stand out, year after year.

s we had not seen each other for a few weeks, there was a Players Meeting scheduled on the eve of the first round. For the most part, these meetings are simply used to discuss any new sponsorships or events being added to the schedule, player-category adjustments and other general topics - It’s always the ‘General’ category on the agenda which brings out the best laughs in the meetings, courtesy of characters like Wallie Coetsee and Titch Moore. I’ll have to stealthily film and upload a snippet on social media after the next meeting, as no justice could possibly be done to their comedic timing through this short story - They may have missed their calling on the standup comedy circuit, as the whole room was almost in tears listening to them! The tournament rolled on and as so often happens at coastal courses, the cut was determined by either being on the good or bad side of the draw regarding the weather. Despite being on the wrong side of that coin, Madalitso Muthiya fired a seven under par 65 to take the early lead. He never looked back from there and finished -11 over the three days to claim his first Sunshine Tour win. Being from Zim myself and ‘Maddy’ from Zambia, we’ve formed a great friendship and also travel together. There is no question that Madalitso has formed a love affair with Wild Coast Country Club since, as last week we went back for the Sun International event and he finished 4th on -13, putting him 24 under in his last six rounds!
paid the price. Next up we returned to Gary Player Country Club after a five year hiatus from our schedule, for the start of the Sun International series of tournaments. This is not exactly the golf course you would like to walk onto, following a poor final round performance just a couple of days earlier. With confidence in my tee shots a little lower than usual, I survived the first sixteen holes until coming completely unstuck on the 8th tee box (my seventeen hole) - You never see this hole much on TV during the Nedbank Golf Challenge but I can assure you that even those top guys stand up there and gently whisper a Hail Mary before taking the club away into their backswings. From the Championship tees it takes a couple of seconds for your eyes to adjust and notice the thin sliver of fairway in the distance - Along with the encroaching bush and red-staked hazards surrounding this hole, comes a 220 yard carry just to reach the fairway over yet another, you guessed it - Water Hazard. Having reached this hole in a decent position, I Jaco Ahlers - Winner of the Wild Coast Sun Challenge
I was lying ninth heading into the final round, just three shots behind the overnight leaders but went backwards with a 77 to finish in 31st. Two keys to keep in mind when chasing a lead in windy conditions are 1) be patient and 2) swing smoothly - I unfortunately suffered from memory loss on both of these points for the duration of my round and

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - U ps & downs: L ife on the S unshine Tour proceeded to pull my tee shot so deep into the hazard that I had to take my penalty drop next to the bridge by the ladies tee box. Four shots later I was down for a double-bogey six and trudged to the ninth tee feeling like I had just been in a bar fight. The rest of the holes dragged on with little improvement and ended in a ‘short week’, which means ‘missed cut’ but sounds less painful. The tournament was won by Oliver Bekker on -8, with only nine of the one hundred and twenty players breaking par that week! ‘Bekks’ had been off the boil for a while before this win and I’m sure that it will kickstart another run of form, as he’s a very strong player and an all-round good guy. Arabella Golf Estate in Hermanus was next up on the schedule, which I decided to withdraw from in order to focus on some much needed range and gym time. Vaughn Groenewald won down in the Cape for his 5th career victory and 4th since turning 40. Vaughn is also such a great guy and seems to just be getting better each season! Last week we were back at Wild Coast, as mentioned earlier and following my week of training I felt ready to be out there again. Three of us shared the seven hour trip down in order to subsidize some of the inevitable traveling costs associated with playing golf on Tour. Coming through Pieter-
maritzburg however, my cam-belt snapped leaving us stranded on the side of the road until Frans, (the friendliest tow-truck driver on earth) pulled us into his mate’s garage. After waving goodbye to Frans, we entered into a full-blown negotiation with the mechanic. This involved us explaining that Sunshine Tour Players don’t make millions of dollars like Tiger and Rory - It wasn’t pretty for a while but proved fruitful in the end, with his quote coming in a lot lower than expected. With that issue out the way, we now had to find a lift for the remaining 200km to the Wild Coast. Thankfully Madalitso landed at King Shaka, rented a bigger car and then took the Maritzburg detour to our rescue. After only managing a nine-hole practice round I teed off in the afternoon on Day One, in perfect conditions at Wild Coast Country Club. Despite a shaky start I gathered myself and finished strongly with three closing birdies to shoot an opening 70, which is even par on the Wild Coast lay-out. The early morning weather for my tee time in round 2 was even better than the previous afternoon. I hit the ball much better than two weeks prior at Gary Player CC thanks to that extra week of work I had put in, but still wasn’t scoring well enough. Some costly mental errors over the first 34 holes found me at even par playing the par 3, seventeenth. With the ‘projected cut’ being displayed all over the on-course leaderboards at -1, this was not the

The math was fairly simple though; if I don’t play the last two holes under par, I’m going home early, with no pay-cheque, oh and a R3,800 mechanics bill to pay before the lonely seven hour drive back to Joburg. What lay ahead of me on that 17th tee was 175 yards of par 3, into a cross wind, before the 400 yard par 4, 18th hole with a back right hole location, directly into the wind - a walk in the park? Having hit a seven iron to 30 feet on the 17th, I marched down from the tee box with my caddie Jake intensely discussing our strategy for trying to make this cut. After reading the line I assured him that “I’ve got it”, then took one last look at the hole and pictured it going in. The strike was solid and it started off on line. Curling just in front of the cup, it dived in and we were now on the cut line at -1, heading to the 18th tee. With the last hole being a dog-leg right, most players hit a long iron or 3-wood to the corner followed by a wedge to the green. The club of choice for me on these type of holes, is always my trusty 2-iron. With a welcomed feeling of relief having just birdied 17, I was not 100% focused on my tee shot in this moment. My trusty 2-iron flared way right off the club-face and was now hurtling uncontrollably into the middle of what looked like a scene location from the new Jurrasic World movie. Needless to say that it disappeared completely, as if being sucked into an abyss of broken dreams. At that moment I looked at my caddie and had a choice to make; either that ball is lost and we’re missing the cut OR we are going to find it and somehow rescue the par we need to stay alive in this tournament.
With four feet standing between you and the cut line, a few weird thoughts can enter your mind. In my experience, it’s always best to walk in, look at the hole and commit to hitting a solid putt. As soon as you start thinking about holing it, (or missing it), you’ve already lost the battle. So I took my last look, hit a solid putt and it snuck in on the left edge. Hands down, my personal best par, ever. I went out in the final round T34th as only the Top 40 make the cut in the Sun International and Vodacom events. With momentum on my side after the previous day’s finish I went on to shoot a closing 66 and move up to finish in 14th place. This game really does teach you so many lessons throughout each round, hole and sometimes even just how you choose to react to a single shot - I can almost guarantee, that if I had reacted negatively to my tee shot on 18 at Wild Coast, the end of this story would have been very different. Choices are always there to be made - So the next time your ball flies off in an undesirable direction, I hope that this story will remind you to choose wisely. Until then, swing freely and thanks for reading!
After a couple of minutes the ball was spotted, but lying down in what I can only imagine was once a well hidden bunker used in the Boer War. The only club I could get at the ball was a lob wedge. With every bit of swing speed available, the club face somehow got it out of there but only as far as the fairway bunker, still 125 yards from the green. Pitching wedge in hand now, I swung through and made clean contact before catching a glimpse of the ball clearing the bunker face. Running up the hill like a ‘99 Sergio Garcia, I then watched as the ball pitched 3 feet passed the pin and spun back 4 feet below it.

Keegan Daniel - Springbok and Sharks loose forward 1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend? I was born in Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape and attended Dale junior (92), Gonubie primary (93-98) and Dale College (99-03). 2. Who did you first play provincial rugby for? I first played for Border in 03 in the Craven Week, and then moved up to KZN where I played junior level in 05, before starting my pro career with the Sharks in 06.
The game in Japan is still an amateur sport; hence it is not as competitive as a Currie Cup. The average stanndard of the player there is vastly different to the kind of player you find in the Currie Cup. The game is evolving but there is a resistance to change and using more effective ways to improve the game. As far as a country, I loved my experience over there. It is vastly different to anything I had experienced before and it required me to step out of my comfort zone. I would definitely return with friends to explore the country.
5. Are you now fluent in Japanese? Not even close. It’s a very complex language and not easy to pick up. 3. To date you have played five tests for the Springboks with your last one being against Argentina in 2012. Argentina have made big strides in their rugby, do you think they could have a chance of winning the next World Cup? They have made huge strides; they play an exciting brand of rugby and with them being in the Super comp, they are only going to get better. As far as World Cups are concerned, it’s all about the draw that you get; it really is a door wide open scenario. We’ve seen the likes of Japan in the last World Cup create a few upsets, so world rugby is catching up to the so called power-houses of world rugby.
4. You spent two seasons with the Kubota Spears over in Japan, how was that and how did it compare for example to playing in the Currie Cup?

6. In three words what can be done to improve South African rugby? Skills, skills and skills. 7. An incident that I personally always remember concerning you was when the Sharks were playing the Cheetahs and “the Beast” Tendai Mtawarira held you in the air for a few seconds demonstrating impressive strength. What did you say to him after that and did the boys chirp you in the change room after the game? I It wasn’t the first time he had done that. There was an instance with Anton Breslar, who weighs a lot more than I do, and beast was able to look after him. Beast is an incredibly powerful human being and it shows on the field. I think beast would’ve been the one getting chirped had he dropped either of us.

SPECIAL FEATURE - CELEBRIT Y GOLFER PROFILE 8. You have won the Currie Cup twice with the Sharks and they have started this season well, could 2016 be number three? I’ve actually had the privilege of winning it 3 times, 08, 10, 13 and this year would make it a fourth. For me the Currie Cup is the competition I love the most. We’ve had a good solid start to the season so far and need to keep on improving; ultimately we want to give ourselves the chance to host a home semi and final. Those are the two games that matter most. 9. What are your thoughts on Super Rugby and where it should be headed (more teams/less teams)? I think the competition is saturated and can be restructured to a format consisting of fewer teams. The biggest change that I believe needs to happen is that we need to go back to a round robin type format, where each team plays everyone once. That is the fairest way in which you can judge which teams are the top teams. 10. Who was your hero when you were a boy? Rugby wise it was Corne Krige and Jonny Wilkinson and cricket was Darryl Cullinan.
GETTING ON TO GOLF • When did you start playing golf? Probably around the age of 18 or 19, but if I played 3 times a year that would be a lot. I only really started getting into golf about 6 years ago. • What is your current handicap? It’s a very good 16. Ha ha ha. • Are you a member of a golf club? Yes, at Simbithi CC.
• Which is your favourite golf course? Durban has so many to choose from, but for me, Zimbali, Simbithi and DCC are always great courses to play, each offering different challenges. • If you had to play a round of golf with one club, which one would you choose? It would have to be my 6 iron. • Do you walk or take a cart? We have to take carts, as not to tire out the legs during the week, but I actually prefer to walk, it gives you chance to think about your game and enjoy the course. • Your favourite golfer is? Who doesn’t love Andrew “beef” Johnston. You can see he just loves what he does, but I have always admired Tiger Woods, he had an incredible talent. He changed world golf with his dominance and brought the crowds. • Have you ever had a hole-in-one? Never. Not from a lack of effort though. One day......one day.
11. Which would it be; a lovely meal at a fancy restaurant or a braai? Without a doubt a braai! Nothing beats having your mates over, sitting around the open flame, having a few drinks and having a good time.

The 84-year-old “Hutchy” delighted in remembering the rounds he played with Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and so many others and the times he beat some of them, rather than the fact that an 11th-place finish in the Dutch Open earned him zero prize money in those days. Yet if there is one thing he could change about the game, it would be making it easier for the average golfer. “It’s become too difficult for the ordinary golfer. The ball goes so far for the modern pro, but the ordinary club golfer still struggles.” And then he recalled how far Sunshine Tour campaigner Merrick Bremner hits the ball and added, “I don’t know how he does it, but I do know that every time he does, that little golf ball says ‘ouch’.

She began the final round two shots clear of KeNako Golf Academy’s Meichtry, who carded rounds of 70 and 73. The Pretoria CC player kept the reigns through the turn, but Meichtry closed the gap with birdies at 12 and 13 and the Swiss amateur grabbed a share of the lead at five under when Du Toit dropped a shot at the pat three 14th. Both players birdied 15, but Du Toit holed a birdie putt at 16 to reclaim the lead and matched Meichtry with pars over the closing holes to seal the victory. Du Toit converted a handful of top 10 finishes in 2015 with her first provincial victory in the 35th Ackerman Championship in October and carried that winning form to turns in the winner’s circle at the World Amateur Reunion Championship in March.

auteng North rising star Danielle du Toit edged out local favourite Azelia Meichtry to celebrate a third victory this season in the Southern Cape Championship in George late last month. The 17-year-old from Pretoria CC staved off a spirited challenge from the top ranked Swiss amateur to clinch a one stroke victory at Oubaai GC “I am really, really proud of this win, because Azelia applied a lot of pressure in the final round,” said the Grade 11 Menlo Park scholar. “I knew off the bat that Azelia was going to be tough to beat when she finished within two strokes of me after round two. She lives down in the Southern Cape and she is familiar with the courses and conditions in the region. “My only aim for this tournament was to try and minimize mistakes and to take advantage at the holes where I could get up birdie opportunities. I’m really proud that I kept my focus and stayed calm and in the moment to close it out. “To finish ahead of Azelia is a huge confidence booster for the rest of the season, because she is a class player with a

De Villiers Graaff drives to SA High Schools victory founded just over two years ago in the small Boland hamlet. “I am incredibly proud of their achievement, considering that the academy is only two years old and this is only their second appearance in this championship,” said De Villiers Graaff High School principal, Gesina Loubser. “We were so excited when they finished fifth overall last year, so you can only imagine our excitement after winning this year. To see them go all the way to the winner’s circle is unbelievable. We are a very small high school with only 252 learners and this will not only inspire the rest of our scholars, but it will really motivate the younger pupils at the Golf Academy. “Our primary school team also played in the Ernie Els SA Primary School Championship for the first time last year. They finished ninth overall and this year, they took third place. We are going home with a gold and a bronze from both school team events and that really is an incredible achievement for the teams, the schools and the De Villiers Graaff Golf Academy.” Loubser also clinched the Individual Competition on three under 143. He finished one stroke ahead of Franklin Manchest from Rundell College, who vaulted to second with a blistering eightunder-par 65 in the final round.

ust a year after their first appearance in the SA High School Championship, De Villiers Graaff High School blew away the competition and celebrated victory in the prestigious high school team event in East London last month. Herman Loubser, Tyron Davidowitz and Daniel Cronje posted rounds of 228 and 219 at East London GC to steer the team to a seven stroke victory on nine over 447. The trio laid the foundation for their success with an opening 228. De Beer drives Africa Junior Open victory “Luca hit his second to the far side of the green and he had at least 10 metres to the pin, so I attacked the pin. The ball rolled about 10 feet past the flag. Luca lagged his putt to tap-in distance and I knew I had to nail the birdie putt to win. “I got really nervous over the putter at the last two holes in regulation play and I missed two short putts. This time I just blocked everything out. I went through my routine like I would for any putt at any hole and I struck it perfectly.” Filippi broke in the Nomads National Order of Merit event at St Francis Links in June and the 17-year-old Milnerton junior looked to be heading to the winner’s circle for a second time after taking the 36-hole lead with rounds of 67 and 72. De Beer had gone into the final round two shots behind Filippi and one off the pace from Ekurhuleni’s Jayden Schaper – already a two-time winner this season – and Kian Rose from Central Gauteng. The St Dominic’s Priory matriculant closed the gap with birdies at three, eight and nine and surged into the lead with another pair of birdies at 14 and 15. I didn’t expect to be in a play-off, but when he also missed his par putt, it was game on. It definitely helped to play the playoff against Luca, because we are very good friends and I didn’t feel nervous going into extra time against him.

change in tactics at the fourth extra hole yielded a huge pay off for Eastern Province junior Kyle de Beer, who bagged his first national victory in the Africa Junior Open in a play-off last month. The 18-year-old Port Elizabeth golfer had taken the outright lead in the final round at the Fish River Sun CC, but squandered his chance at victory with back-to-back bogeys at the closing holes. De Beer got a reprieve for his late wobble, though, when Luca Filippi from Western Province also dropped a shot at the closing hole. De Beer’s 69 and a 71 from the overnight leader saw them tie for six-under-par 210 at the end regulation play. The pair was still dead-locked after playing the 18th hole twice and one trip down the 10th. “Neither of us got really aggressive at the first three play-off holes, but I changed my tactics when we went down the 18th for a third time,” De Beer explained.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic. The biggest thing for me was keeping my focus, but I had the late wobble and was lucky to get a second chance in the play-off. Those two putts at eight and nine was key, because I’d been struggling with the putter lately and to knock in back-to-back birdie putts gave me a lot of confidence and the birdies at 14 and 15 just reinforced my self-belief. “I can’t say how much this means to me. I’ve had massive encouragement from my family and my coach, Graeme Whale, and the members at Port Elizabeth GC and it’s to pay back their support with this first win.”

kurhuleni amateur Kyle McClatchie added to his trophy haul this season after denying local favourite Matt Saulez a home victory in the KwaZulu-Natal Championship late last month. Coming off a maiden win on the IGT Tour, the Golf RSA National Squad member made sure he was tucked in the log-jam of the 36-hole Stroke Play Qualifier and secured his spot in the 32-strong field for the match play stage with a top eight finish at Margate CC. McClatchie defeated KwaZulu-Natal’s Clayton Mansfield 3 & 2 in round one and eliminated another local hope, Tristan Brice, at the 21st hole to advance to the quarter-final. The Wanna Be A Champions Academy player despatched fellow Ekurhuleni amateur Angus Cole-Ellis 3 & 2 and booked his spot in the final match when he knocked out Western Province junior Luca Filippi at the 20th hole. Saulez was also in blistering form during his campaign to the final. He whipped Emilio Pera 6 & 5 in the first round, knocked out Louis Albertse 3 & 2 in round two and handed Graham Fabricius an 8 & 7 thumping to reach the semi-final. He set a date with McClatchie with a 5 & 4 victory over Jason

Broomhead, but on the day, the Durban Country Club standout couldn’t hold off the in-form number six, who took the 36-hole match 3 & 2. “I think the runner-up finish on the Big Easy Tour followed by the win on the IGT Tour gave me a lot of self-belief, especially to keep fighting even when the stakes are down,” said McClatchie, who rose to third in the South African Golf Association Open Amateur Rankings on Monday. “It definitely helped me to pull through in the matches that went into extra holes and against Matt in the final.” McClatchie was one down through five, but drew level with Saulez when the KZN amateur dropped a shot at the sixth. “I birdied seven and nine to go 2-up at the turn,” McClatchie said. “We both played really well on the back nine and made of loads of birdies. It was very tight. I won 14 with a birdie to go 3-up, but lost 15 to an eagle from Matt. I birdied 16 and we both birdied 18, so I had a 3-up lead going into the last 18 holes. “My putter saved me, because the match stayed really tight, but I made the crucial putts to keep the lead. I was dormie up at 16 and closed out the win with a par. It was a very tight final, even if the score doesn’t suggest it. It was great fun going up against Matt in the final. He was a great opponent who gave as good as he got.”

Naidoo nails Border Stroke Play victory

olf RSA National Squad player Dylan Naidoo rocketed to fourth in the Open Amateur rankings following a two stroke victory in the Border Stroke Play Championship at the Fish River Sun CC last month.
The 18-year-old from Modderfontein reeled in four birdies from the second hole in the first round and another gain at nine saw him lead the field at the turn. However, a costly eight at the par five 12th put paid to his challenge and he closed with a 70 to finish two shots off the pace from Western Province junior Luca Filippi. Naidoo got off to a fast start in the second round with back-toback birdies and a run of 16 pars saw the HPC Golf Academies player sign for a second 70. In the final round, the Central Gauteng golfer offset a lone bogey with four birdies to close with a four under 68 and sealed his victory on eight-under-par 208. Filippi, who triumphed in the St Francis Links Nomads National Order of Merit event in June, followed an opening 68 with successive rounds of 71 to finish in second on six under 210, four strokes ahead of Ekurhuleni’s Kyle McClatchie. The Border victory came on the heels of a tie for 51st in the 110th Southern Amateur Championship at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in South Carolina and marks his first success on the South African Amateur Association Open Amateur circuit this season.

• Our mystery golfer was born on the 23rd August 1929 in Brunswick Australia. • He is best remembered for his five wins in the British Open between 1954 and 1965. • In the era that he won his first four Open Championships, very few of the leading professionals from the United States travelled to Britain to play in that event. However he demonstrated with his win in 1965 that he could beat a field of the world’s very best players, as that victory came against a field that included Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tony Lema. • He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1988 and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985. • Among golf’s top players; he has perhaps been the most active as a golf writer, having contributed to the Melbourne Age for some 50 years, since the early 1950s. • He has designed over a hundred golf courses in Australia and around the world.

Brooke Henderson is now a Major Champion
The 18-year-old Canadian defeated world No.1 Lydia Ko on the first playoff hole at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship to capture her first Major title and second win on the LPGA Tour. Henderson made a charge on the Sunday at Sahalee Country Club to catch Ko, carding a final round six-under par, 65 to match Ko for the low round of the week and force extra holes with Ko. The duo returned to the tee at the par 4, 18th for the first playoff hole where both found the fairway off the tee. Ko hit her approach to 20 feet then Henderson responded, stuffing her approach to three feet and the win. The week seemed to belong to Henderson from the start. The world No.4 opened with a four-under par on the Thursday which included her first ace on Tour to take the outright lead on day one. Henderson fell back into a share of the lead on the Friday and trailed by two entering the final round. The victory was the first for Henderson as a member of the LPGA Tour and first Major title. Her first win at the 2015 Cambia Portland Classic came as a non-member.
