What to make of Charlie Woods? Tiger’s 15-year-old son, fell short in a PGA Tour pre-qualifier for the Cognizant Classic after a 12-stroke meltdown on the par-4 seventh, several double bogeys and unruly behaviour by fans who’ve been criticized for overcrowding the teenager.
Based on historical odds, he’ll be lucky to even get a tour card. He’ll have to beat out every up-and-coming tour hopeful. And if he manages that, he’ll have to be better than the existing field to stay there, all the while handling insane media attention.
He has the advantage of limitless resources to train and obviously his father’s DNA. That increases his odds ‘somewhat. But it’s still hard to make the tour, harder to stay there, and harder than hard to be a star. There are a lot of elite amateur golfers who never sniff success at the pro level.
Dear James
It is worth bearing in mind that this was the first time that Charlie Woods had ever participated in a PGA Tour pre-qualifier, events that are limited to players with a 2 handicap or better.
Consensus is that we need to let him develop his game without the constant media coverage, as we know golf is mentally challenging enough without all the added attention and pressure

THE SHORT
Part 4:
Give yourself the best opportunity to make
Putting can be one of the hardest or easiest aspects in the game of golf. It all comes down to a players touch and feel. The most important thing in putting is however the set-up. In this article I will be going through in detail, the set-up and what are the guidelines to give yourself the best opportunity to make more putts.
Set-up
Things to focus on in the set-up:
1. Weight distribution : You should stand comfortably and your weight evenly distributed between each leg, and your feet set naturally apart.
2. Body Alignment :
You should have your feet, hips and shoulders to all be parallel and aiming straight down your target line.
3. Upper Body Tilt :
Bend or tilt forward from the hips slightly but not too much, the right amount of tilt is defined as when your forearms come to the position of where they look like an extension of the putter forming a straight line. You would want to stand in a comfortable position and not feel like you are falling over.
4. Ball Position :
The desired ball position would be in the centre of your stance or slightly in front of middle.
5. Eye Line :
This is where your eyes are situated in terms of the ball and you would want your eyes directly over the ball.
6. Arm Position :
You want your arms to just hang from your body in a

7. Wrist Position
Ideally you want natural and comfortable
8. Hand Position
You want your slightly in front
9. Grip :

many different ways to grip a putter, but the important factor to remember is, that the putter run through the middle of the palm fingers touching the other side of the grip. the hinge in your wrists.
Another way to describe it would be as a pendulum motion with your hands and shoulders just swinging smoothly back and forth.

stroke is fairly simple and can be described as would rock a baby. You want to ensure that you triangle shape with your arms and shoulders and just rocking your shoulders back and forth as rock a baby.
I hope you can apply this to your game and that it helps you hole more putts in the future.

KNOW YOUR GOLF CLUB’S GENERAL MANAGER
Anje Rademan - General ManagerVaal de Grace Golf Estate
You are the current GM at Vaal de Grace. Have you always been in the industry or what were you involved in prior to Vaal de Grace? No, I spent six years in the manufacturing industry building boats and caravans. Before that, I was involved in farming and accounting practices.
What made you choose a career in the hospitality industry?
As I lived on Vaal de Grace, my passion for our estate was there to build and improve all of our experiences on the estate. When the GM resigned last year I applied for the position.
As a women is it difficult for you to make inroads in this industry? Not particularly. While the golfing industry has been traditionally male-dominated, there are already women in the Community Association sector. More women are becoming
involved in golf, both in playing and management. Proving your ability to add value opens up more opportunities.
Who has been your biggest mentor?
It is difficult to mention one person but there is someone who has consistently believed in me and supported my endeavors. He encourage me to step out of my comfort zone, emphasizing self-belief and my capacity to achieve more.
What are your biggest challenges as the GM of Vaal de Grace GE?
Currently on the golf course side – it’s maintaining playable greens, with challenges like loadshedding and water control.
On the HOA side – Water management is a challenge due to inconsistent water supply from the municipality, making it
www.sagolftrader.co.za March | April 2024 18
necessary to rely on our own resources.
With the golf course on the banks of the Vaal river, during the rainy season, are there precautionary measures that can be taken to make the flooding manageable?
Flooding on the golf course side is not common. Only two significant floods occurred, with the most recent one last year when the barage opened all the sluices at once.
The course is designed for efficient drainage following substantial rainfalls. There was a lot of thought put into this excellently designed Nick Price Golf Course.
Has the golf industry grown in your opinion over the last 3 years?
Looking back at our history, the golf industry has grown. There is a lot of growth in the junior and women divisions.
More people are playing different courses, not just their home course. However, there are quieter times, such as January, February, and mid-winter.
With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to Vaal de Grace GE?
We aim to provide a relaxing yet challenging golfing experience. We offer mid-week specials, group
packages, and facilities for conferences, birthday parties, or prize giving after golf days.
Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life?
At times, yes. However, I have a supportive team. It’s crucial to maintain a balance between work and personal life to avoid being overwhelmed.
Do you still have short & long term goals?
Short-term goals include increasing our membership and positioning the course among the top 100.
Long-term goals involve upgrading golf cart paths, constructing a golf cart shed, and fostering a community inside the estate with a shared vision.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love playing golf and enjoy clay pigeon shooting with my son. To socialize with friends and travelling.
Do you still get time to play a round of golf ?
I thought I would play more, but try to play at least once a week, usually on Sunday I want to play more on other courses to gain different experiences and insights into course management.

NEWS CLIP SUNSHINE TOUR AND SAGDB CLINIC AT BAIN’S WHISKY CAPE TOWN OPEN INSPIRES THE YOUNG GOLFERS OF THE GANGLANDS
The day that Codi Ruiters fell off building machinery and broke his ankle in the Heideveld squatter camp where he lived with his family in a shack with no running water, electricity or a toilets and in the heart of the ganglands of the Cape Flats was the best day of his life.
On that day, in a neighbourhood where children no longer even flinch at the sound of gunshots, Ruiters’ life changed forever.
The machinery belonged to Nedsteel, a company owned by Charles Fourie who came from this same neighbourhood and who was busy with building work for the government. That was the day his path crossed with a young boy who was described as a lost cause, and the game of golf changed that.
As 13-year-old Ruiters hit shots on the

driving range at Royal Cape Golf Club as part of the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open golf development clinic with the Sunshine Tour and European Challenge Tour professionals and a group of South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) golfers, Fourie recalled the journey he has been on with Ruiters.
“When Codi injured himself on our site, I decided to take him under my wing and I arranged for him to be treated and got him to a biokeneticist when his cast came off. I grew up in that area and was lucky to get out of there a long time ago,” says Fourie.
When Codi came to me he couldn’t read. His school principal told me that I’m wasting my time. He said Codi was a bully and wasn’t even going to pass the year and that he’s a lost cause. I arranged that he gets tutoring three times a week. Now he’s a prefect at the school, a top 10 student there and he plays chess for his school.”
Fourie says Ruiters and his family originally lived in a small shack before he recently helped them to get a flat in the area. The prevalence of poverty, drugs and violence is still overwhelming, and the SAGDB’s golf programme is a vital escape.

Peter Little, an SAGDB Coordinator in the Western Province, has seen first hand the impact golf has had on changing a boy like Ruiters’ reality.
“We have kids who come from the ganglands and some very rough environments. Many of them didn’t know anything about golf and in a year they get down to single-figure handicaps. We get letters from the local schools congratulating us as the SAGDB for the players that we have from there and how their marks have improved.
“Western Province won the last Under-19
Interprovincial and the team had two players from the SAGDB, and one of them was voted the MVP (Most Valuable Player) in the A Division. We’ve also had four tournaments victories by SAGDB golfers this year so far. There is a lot of talent around here.”
Ruiters himself has come down to a six handicap and is a member of the SAGDB National Squad. “I’ve been playing golf for three years now. I love the game because golf can take you far in life. I’d like to be a professional one day like my hero on the Sunshine Tour, Robin Williams.”

It’s exactly what Fourie wants to see happen for Ruiters as he knows the power of sport, and specifically golf, to create opportunities.

“It’s a rough area these kids come from and they grow up in an aggressive lifestyle. But you know, since we’ve been working with Codi and seen the change in him, it’s also helped his family. CHARLIE WOODS SUFFERS NIGHTMARE AT PGA TOUR QUALIFYING EVENT
The 15-year-old son of former world No.1 Tiger Woods carded a 16-over-over 86 to finish well outside the five qualification spaces in the pre-qualifying event at Lost Lake in Hobe Sound, Florida.
Woods Jnr had no birdies in a round that included 11 pars, four bogeys, two doubles and a disastrous 12 at the par-4 seventh.
The top five and ties from each of four pre-qualifier sites advance to the Monday qualifier, from which four players earn a spot in the Cognizant Classic at PGA National.Charlie Woods has played the 36-hole PNC Championship with his father the last four years in a scramble format. He ran into trouble early with a pair of bogeys and a double bogey on the par-5 fifth hole. But it was on the seventh, with water down the right side and water behind the green, where the teen’s hopes ended for good. He made a 12.
Woods made the turn in 47 and had two bogeys and a double bogey on the back for an 86. The leading score was a 65, and it took a 67 to advance.
He played alongside Olin Browne Jr, the son of three-time PGA Tour winner Olin Browne, who shot a two-over 72.
The teenager has played the last four PNC Championships in Orlando with his iconic father, but has fallen short on his first attempt to make his debut on the US circuit which Tiger famously dominated.
However, it has now emerged that Charlie had to contend with more than just the natural pressure that
the pre-qualifier must bring.
As reported by the Palm Beach Post, Woods had to deal with several unruly fans who had turned up to watch him play and became nuisances throughout his round.
It’s understood that no rope was in place to keep spectators back, with tournament officials pleading with spectators to keep their distance as Woods made his way round.
More than 50 fans followed the youngster, with one spectator attempting to get his autograph in a copy of his father’s book, “How I Play Golf”, whilst he was in competition.
Tiger Woods who wasn’t in attendance at Lost Lake, made his PGA Tour debut aged 16 at the LA Nissan Open, where he missed the cut after being given a sponsor’s exemption.
The 48-year-old has been recovering from influenza that forced him to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational last week.

WITH WERNER FERREIRA Q A
Golf course superintendent Parys Golf Estate
You’ve been in the golf industry for a long time including being GM at Bredasdorp GC, when did you realise that turf management was the industry you wanted to take further?
I Never thought the turf industry was where I would end up. Developing a passion for turf and knowing how to turn that passion into results. The satisfaction that comes from this is pleasing and the remarks and respect from members is very rewarding.
What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?
Best - As a superintendent, I feel lucky that I get to spend each day out in a beautiful, natural setting.
Worst - Long hours with changing elements.
What are your biggest challenges with a course that has 14 holes on the banks of the Vaal river?
We had to deal with two floods over the past two years. Erosion of the river banks is becoming a problem. As we are on an island this is a huge concern. It is a fine balance to clean the river banks for the scenery without damaging the natural vegetation that helps to protect and strengthen the river banks.
With current temperatures being very high, what are the measures being taken to prevent the course getting burnt without using too much water?
Being next to the Vaal we have more than enough water. Water quality is of concern. A dosing system was installed to improve the quality and reduce algae in the pipes and sprayers. The product that we use also acts as a surfactant and keeps the moisture in the soil.
www.sagolftrader.co.za March | April 2024 32 SPECIAL FEATURE - ALL ABOUT GREENKEEPING
How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance?
In the Cape we have a strong south easter with warm temperatures in the summer and up north more rain with very cold winters. At Parys we have very cold winters (-10c) which effect the cutting and watering practices we apply in winter.
What are the differences in grasses (fairway, rough, greens) at Parys Golf Estate to other parts of the country?
The grasses throughout our course is the same as most courses on the Highveld. Kikuyu from tee to green with bentgrass greens. As we have very cold winters the warm season grasses go dormant from early May.
Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country?
I don’t think the machinery changes very much depending on the type of grasses used on the course. The budget available
and the staff compliment will determine the machines used.
Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf courses to close one day per week for maintenance?
It depends on the number of rounds per club. When a course is busy all the time it’s the only time for projects and to do necessary maintenance and cultural practices. After covid the staff compliment of most clubs were reduced, and this serves as a good time to catch up with work with not too much interference. These days can also be used for junior/ academy golf with the focus more on the driving range.
People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how?
All the greenside bunkers were reconstructed by Bunker Shield. As we spend a lot of money we are under the microscope and regular checks/probes are being done to have consistent bunkers. With the steep faces and washouts after heavy rains the sand gets distributed throughout the bunker and needs to be raked back. A measuring stick is used and this probing exercise is done every second week.

LINDBERG HOLDS HIS NERVE IN PLAYOFF TO
WIN
BAIN’S WHISKY CAPE TOWN OPEN
Sweden’s Mikael Lindberg holed a magnificent birdie putt on the second playoff hole to beat South Africa’s Ryan van Velzen and win the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open at the Royal Cape Golf Club in February.
In a tightly-contested final round, Lindberg birdied holes 16 and 17 to take a one-stroke lead over Van Velzen playing the last. But the Swede three-putted the final green for a bogey to slip into a playoff on 16 under par with a final
round of 67. Van Velzen closed with a bogey-free 66.
Both golfers parred the par-four 18th as the first playoff hole. Then playing it again, Lindberg had a similar putt from where he’d three-putted in regulation play, and this time he made no mistake as he holed it.
“It was a rollercoaster day but it was a

very good day,” said Lindberg.
It was a fitting end to a tournament that always seemed destined to go down to the wire, with 10 players sharing the lead after the second round and Lindberg one shot clear of a group of seven players going into Sunday’s final round.
In perfect conditions several players made an early run at the lead, including Van Velzen who made two birdies and an eagle in three holes on the front nine. JC Ritchie came with a charge of his own as he made three birdies in his opening four holes. And Louis Albertse birdied the 16th to put him just one shot out of the playoff as he went on to finish third on 15 under with a final round of 67.
But it was Lindberg’s early birdies on the back nine at holes 11 and 12 and then the
key birdies on 16 and 17 that allowed him the leeway for his bogey on the last.
“I saw a couple of players made an early move and were playing well out there. The putt on 17 was huge for me. Then as I was walking up to the 18th green I just kept telling myself to just two-putt for the win. But my first putt was probably the worst putt I hit all week – I barely hit the ball. In the playoff I had it in the back of my mind that I’d just three-putted this same putt, so it was a huge relief when it went in.”
Lindberg is the second Swede to win the Bain’s Whisky Cape Town Open following countryman Anton Karlsson in 2020, and he was delighted to do so as he paid tribute to a wonderful week in the City of Cape Town.
“I love Cape Town. I love the whole culture here and always enjoy my time here. To win here is really special.”

VAN DER MERWE BOOKS 152ND OPEN BERTH IN
Altin van der Merwe held his nerve under the greatest pressure to secure the Africa Amateur Championship in a sudden-death playoff, and with it a spot in the 152nd Open Championship at Royal Troon later this year.
The 27-year-old GolfRSA No 1 had been hoping to cap off an outstanding amateur career with a strong finish this week, but may need to hold off on turning professional for a little longer, as the win includes exemptions into The Amateur Championship, The Open, the Alfred Dunhill Championship and the Waterfall City Tournament of Champions.
“I can’t wait to play in the Open,” Van der Merwe said. “It’s links golf as well, so I’m going to be licking my chops out there with just a little sting 2-iron all day, and I can’t wait until the time comes.”
It took some clutch golf for Van der Merwe to get there, although it’s fair to say the GolfRSA National Squad member has been delivering under pressure for the past 12 months. Seven days earlier, he holed an unlikely bunker shot on the closing hole at Houghton GC to win the inaugural GolfRSA International Amateur Championship in a tense playoff with Dutchman Jack Ingham. Just a week later, Van der Merwe seized the moment once again.
Starting the day three shots back, he saw numerous putts shave the edge of the hole but kept his nerve to crucially birdie the par-five 18th hole twice in succession – first in regulation play and then in the playoff against compatriots Christiaan Maas and overnight leader Ivan Verster.
“The two competitors I played with are two great friends and we went back and forth. throughout the day,” said Van der Merwe. “I think all three of us had the lead at one stage. On the last hole I just pulled a blinder of an approach out and in the play-off, I made a good two-putt. I can’t describe the feeling; it means everything to me.”
Van der Merwe has been the hottest player in South African men’s amateur golf for the last year, rising to the top of the GolfRSA Open Amateur ranking on the back of four wins and five other top 10s in his last 20 starts. The Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member also finished as the leading amateur in the South African Open.
“It’s awesome to be the new Africa Amateur Champion. It’s an unbelievable feeling but I don’t think it’ll kick in until later,” he said.
The three South Africans were deadlocked on 13-under-par after the regulation 72 holes. Van der Merwe had the best final round of the trio, signing for a two-under-par 70, while Maas finished with a level-par round of 72 and overnight leader Verster shot 73.
Verster got off to a nervy start, dropping shots at the third and the seventh, and making a double bogey at the fourth. However, birdies at the 11th, 12th and 15th saw him return to the top of the leaderboard, before making a costly bogey at the par-three 16th.
“I’m heartbroken just now,” said the 20-year-old from Southern Cape Verster, also a member of the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation, after the playoff.

“I mean, I played unbelievable golf for the first three rounds, so I have to be happy with my performance in some ways. I’ve enjoyed everything about this week and The R&A has been absolutely incredible. It’s been a really special week at Leopard Creek and it’s my favourite place in the world to be.”
For Maas, it was another near miss at the iconic venue.
“Today wasn’t a good performance,” he said. “I had a couple of unlucky breaks early on so I couldn’t get momentum. I felt like I could have made a lot more birdies on the back nine and holed the putts. This stuff happens though and that’s why we play golf. The way Altin finished was unbelievable.
“I love this place and Mr Rupert has always been nice to me with this place, so hopefully one day I can come down here and become a champion.”
Maas also lost his share of the course record he equalled in the third round, as Zimbabwean Keegan Schutt produced the round of a lifetime to sign for a 10-under-par 62 that included eight birdies and an eagle.
“I’m buzzing, words can’t express it,” said Shutt, who finished in a tie for eighth. “I don’t know how I kept my nerves today, especially coming up to the closing holes. I’m just really glad that I held it together. This is my best round of golf competitively and a 62 at this amazing course at Leopard Creek tops everything. Before the day, I would never have imagined being in this position. I’m just so happy that I managed to do it.”

HAT TRICK HEAVEN FOR VAN KAN
Kyra van Kan’s month of love continued as she made it a hat trick of February wins with a commanding nine-stroke victory in the inaugural Africa Amateur Women’s Invitational.
Having swept to runaway victories in the South African Stroke Play Championship and the inaugural GolfRSA International Amateur Championship on the GolfRSA South African Swing earlier in February, Van Kan sealed her third title in three weeks with a wire-to-wire victory over 54 holes at Leopard Creek CC.
“Finishing here on such a prestigious golf course, I’m really honoured to have played golf in front of Mr [Johann] Rupert, The R&A and GolfRSA. It’s just incredible, this feeling. I’m really honoured to have my name on that trophy.
“This is something that I don’t think I’ll forget until I’m like 90. I think I’ll always cherish this moment. The R&A has made this moment feel so special and I’m forever grateful for that.”
The Gauteng North golfer opened with a round of level-par 72 for a three-stroke lead and following it up with rounds of 71 and 72 to finish as the only player under par, ensured the Africa Women’s Invitational
would be added to an already bulging trophy cabinet.
“I have to admit that I felt more nervous this morning than finishing up” Van Kan said.
“You know, anything can happen, especially around Leopard Creek. You have to play seriously good golf. You don’t usually shoot a really low one on the last day, so I decided I would play boring golf and let everyone try and catch me.”
The solid strategy that paid off for Van Kan.
With the win, the former GolfRSA No 1 earned starts in The Women’s Amateur Championship, Final Qualifying for the AIG Women’s Open and The Investec South African Women’s Open in 2024, as well as in the Ladies European Tour’s Lalla Meryem Cup and Magical Kenya Ladies Open in 2025.
These invites will provide a major boost to a very promising career. “I’m really excited for these opportunities,” said Van Kan, last year’s leafing amateur in Investec South African Women’s Open.

GRAHAM ADDS TO SCOTTISH SUCCESS IN SA AMATEUR
Scotland’s Gregor Graham continued his country’s fine record in the South African Amateur Championship when he edged local favourite Jordan Burnand 4&2 in the 36-hole final at Royal Johannesburg GC.
The Blairgowrie player became the fifth Scot to lift the most sought-after amateur title in South Africa, emulating compatriots Michael Stewart (2011), Brian Soutar (2012), Daniel Young (2015) and Craig Scott (2016).
Burnand, the reigning South African Stroke Play champion and second in the GolfRSA national ranking, was heavily favoured going into the final on home soil, but Graham had shown he was coming into form with a runner-up finish in the Gauteng North Open at The Els Club Copperleaf and a top 10 in the SA Stroke Play at Mount Edgecombe CC.
The Scotsman produced a near faultless display of golf to take command of the match over the opening 18 holes, racing to a commanding 5-up lead with a barrage of eight birdies in the first 15 holes.
A surprising double-bogey on the 16th handed Burnand a timely boost, and the Ebotse golfer –chasing the rare calendar double – clawed back two holes with successive birdies go 3-down through the first 18 holes.
Both players birdied the 19th hole, and Graham still had a fight on his hands after Burnand birdied the 22nd (fourth) to go 2-down.
However, with the experienced Gregor Tait on the bag, and encouraged by fellow squad members James Morgan, Jack McDonald and Matthew Wilson, as well as Scottish Golf men’s performance coach Spencer Henderson, the Scotsman closed the door on Burnand with a brilliant two on the 30th hole and
sealed the win with a final birdie on the 34th hole (16th).
“It’s amazing, I couldn’t be happier,” the 20-year-old Graham. “There is so much Scottish history in this event, so to add to that feels great. I’m delighted to have finally won a big amateur event.”
Graham’s great golf in a championship that was first held in 1892, will see his name etched alongside some of the greats of the game, including five-time Open champion Bobby Lock, Major champions Ernie Els and Trevor Immelman, PGA Tour winner Hugh Biaocchi, and DP World Tour winners George Coetzee and Thriston Lawrence, among others.
Graham attributed his success to a strong driving game. “I hit ball very well off the tee and gave myself lots of birdie opportunities,” he said. “Obviously I putted nicely, but I was just taking things one hole at a time and concentrating on giving myself birdie opportunities.”
The Scot made 14 birdies over 34 holes, with his only blemish being a double bogey on the 16th and it was his consistency that wore down his opponent, who was desperate to add the Match Play title to his Stroke Play win a week earlier.

SCOTLAND'S KYLIE HENRY BAGS DIMENSION DATA LADIES PRO-AM TITLE
With crosswinds whizzing over the Montague fairways on the back nine, Kylie Henry was best able to keep her round on track as she sealed a two-stroke victory in the Dimension Data Ladies Pro-Am at Fancourt in February. Henry was two strokes off the lead at the start of the final round, but the other leading contenders spluttered along on the third day. Even though the Scotswoman went out in one-over-par 37, a string of six successive pars on the back nine saw her claim a share of the lead with Ana Dawson, who had led after both the first and second rounds.
And then, as the pressure mounted and
Dawson missed some crucial putts, Henry pounced with key birdies on the par-four 16th and 18th holes. It was her first professional win since 2014, when she won twice on the Ladies European Tour, and the 37-year-old said she was delighted to get back on the winner’s podium after a couple of tough years.
“It means so much to me, I have been playing for a long time, this is my 15th season on tour. But the last couple of seasons have been really tough. I broke my elbow and then last year was just very difficult for me personally and my golf suffered as a result,” Henry said.

VIVE LA RAVETTO AS FRENCHMAN WINS DIMENSION DATA PRO-AM
Frenchman David Ravetto claimed his maiden victory on both the Sunshine Tour and the European Challenge Tour when he won the Dimension Data Pro-Am by two strokes at Fancourt in February
Ravetto took a two-shot lead into the final round on the Montagu course, and two birdies in his opening three holes and then another two birdies in three holes over the turn kept him beyond reach of the field as he closed with a 69
to finish on 15 under par.
“It feels amazing. I’m really proud of myself with how I played. The last six months haven’t been easy for me and I’m super happy,” said Ravetto.
Remarkably, Ravetto is the first French winner of one of South Africa’s longest-standing pro-am tournaments dating back to 1996.

“The key for me this week was just to play solid golf and try to hit as many good shots as I can. I did that today. Today was windy and the pins were tough. I’m happy I didn’t panic. I made a few early birdies and then just tried to play solid golf thereafter,” he said.
England’s Sam Hutsby did his best to catch Ravetto on the final day. When the Frenchman bogeyed the 13th Hutsby had closed to within one shot of him. But Hutsby’s double-bogey on 17 ended his charge as he signed for a 68 and second place on 13 under par.
South Africans Hennie du Plessis and Robin Williams as well as Spain’s Victor Pastor shared third place on 11 under par.
Ravetto admits that the victory has changed his plans somewhat as he now looks to a year of even greater opportunities.
“This will definitely change my planning a bit. I think I’ll still play the DP World Tour a bit, but this proves to me that I’m good enough to win out here. It’s always nice in South Africa as well. The people are so friendly and the courses are in great condition. The three golf courses here at Fancourt are just amazing.”

ÅKESSON MARKS GOLF COMEBACK WITH NMB CHAMPIONSHIP WIN
Swede Björn Åkesson made a fairytale comeback to the game when he won the NMB Championship at Humewood Golf Club in February.
Åkesson was declared the winner after three rounds which he led by a single stroke on 18 under par. The fourth and final round had to be cancelled due to high winds, with the tournament decided over 54 holes.
It was a dream result for the Swede who retired from golf in 2017 after losing his DP World Tour card, and then returned to the Challenge Tour this year.
“It feels amazing. This is my first win on the Challenge Tour and it hasn’t really sunk in yet. It means a lot to me,” he said.

“To get my first win on the Challenge Tour will certainly give me more confidence on the golf course.”
Åkesson started the tournament with a brilliant 63, but the key to his victory was undoubtedly the following two rounds of 67 and 68 which he played in incredibly difficult conditions at Humewood. They proved vital as Saturday’s play was delayed until just after 2pm because of high winds, and then the final round had to be called off on Sunday.
It was very windy on Friday afternoon. It was tough conditions and I played really well. But I think the hole I am most proud of is the 54th hole. I pulled a driver left, found it in the bush, dropped, laid up to 79 metres and then hit that to two metres and made the putt. That meant the most to me because I wasn’t feeling very good at the time.
“But I just kept playing shot by shot. It was tough. But I’ve always been
quite good in these tricky conditions. I don’t enjoy it but I’m good at it.”
England’s Lee Slattery took second place on 17 under par with rounds of 65, 67 and 67. Australia’s Hayden Hopewell was third on 16 under par with rounds of 63, 69 and 68.
The leading South African was Jaco Prinsloo on 13 under par, which secured him a share of sixth place.
This was the final tournament on the Sunshine Tour and Challenge Tour swing, with Åkesson praising the South African run of tournaments.
“The Challenge Tour and Sunshine Tour co-sanctioned events are very good because they give us the opportunity to play when it’s cold in Europe.”

•THE MATCH’ MAX HOMA LETS HIS MOM DOWN, BUT RORY MCILROY THRIVES UNDER LIGHTS AT ‘THE MATCH.
McIlroy wins skins game at The Park against Homa, Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang; $2.1 million and counting to charity.
Max Homa knew a 3-footer after dark is different. So he tried his best to elude it.
“You guys are bad people … my mom’s watching,” Homa told his fellow competitors as he lined up a short par putt at the eighth hole during the ninth edition of “Capital One’s The Match.”
“Could you imagine this?” Homa continued. “My mom’s going to watch me three-putt from 15 feet.”
Moments later, his 3-footer lipped out on the left side. “Had that feeling,” he said afterward.
Homa’s mom wasn’t alone in watching her son vexed by The Park’s lighted setup. The Match’s ninth edition featured a 12-hole skins game between Homa, Rory McIlroy, Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang, with all proceeds to benefit charity. The foursome didn’t hold back in delivering barbs, whether self-deprecating or toward each other, in a spirited competition under the lights in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The Match’s nine editions have combined to raise more than $41 million for charity.
“How much fun it was, being out here with Max and Rose and Lexi, and playing at such a great facility,” McIlroy said, “all these people out here, the atmosphere, it was a really cool night.”
“What we’ve seen with what The Park is doing, and we can feel it here,” McIlroy continued, “so many kids, creating so many opportunities to get into the game of golf, it’s really cool.”
McIlroy won six of the first eight skins, but the final four skins carried over, setting up a closest-to-the-pin challenge from 100 yards, worth $1.1 million to charity, to determine the winner. McIlroy went first and stuffed a wedge to 4 feet, an effort that couldn’t be matched by his fellow three competitors. The final tally: McIlroy with 10 skins (worth $1.9 million), Thompson with two skins (worth $200,000).
The Park charmed The Match participants in its first major broadcast showcase, less than a year after the former West Palm Beach Golf Course reopened for play –following an extensive redesign by Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner and Dirk Ziff. The Park’s 18-hole championship course is complemented by a nine-hole lighted course and putting course, promoting access and inclusivity for South Floridians to fall in love with the game of golf. In contrast to typical Florida marshland, The Park presents minimal water hazards; alternatively, the challenges come via undulating fairways that run off into thick fescue areas, and multi-tier greens.
These greens grew particularly feisty as Monday evening progressed, with night golf’s charms taking the forefront. Green speeds varied as temperatures lowered into the evening; creeping dew made short putts a notably vexing proposition. Nor was course management a straightforward

task; although the course was amply lit, players had trouble adjusting to distances and directions – Homa called “Fore, I think?” after his second shot at the par-4 fourth (from a fairway bunker) sailed left of the green. Zhang striped her tee shot down the middle at the par-4 ninth but wasn’t sure of its fate until she received word it was dead center. “Am I chilling?” she asked. “Let’s goooo!” she replied when the answer was affirmative.
Not even short-iron shots were safe from the evening’s distance challenges.
“That went long?” Homa asked in disbelief when told he went long-left at the 136yard, par-3 11th. “I don’t like the groaning.”
It was the continuation of a frustrating stretch for Homa, who was
forced to scramble at times but took the adversity in stride, maintaining his trademark dry wit throughout.
“Just give me one cool thing,” Homa remarked after missing a 15-foot birdie try that would have won the par-4 10th.
“Everyone out here is like, ‘Man, this Max guy hates charity. Just giving zero dollars back.’”
His name might not be tied to a direct contribution, but Homa was certainly part of a winning evening at The Park.
“This was amazing,” Homa said afterward. “Here at The Park, this is what golf should be more like … The golf course is amazing in itself, but to see the excitement around this place, I’m really excited for the future of hopefully building more places like this, but this is a tremendous start.”

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. The course layout has remained largely unchanged and as a result, one of Umkomaas' unique features are the raised greens, thanks to over 100 years of top-dressings and treatments.
Although not overly long, the course offers a great challenge for low handicappers, especially when the coastal winds blow. It is however forgiving for even an occasional golfer making it the perfect option for families and groups. Well placed bunkers and undulating fairways mean that those seeking to card a low round need to think their way around the course whilst those looking to simply have fun will enjoy themselves too.
Umkomaas is a great choice for those wanting to get the whole family out into the fresh air. We offer exceptional family membership packages and the opportunity to learn to play via our KidzGolf programme
Living up to our reputation as the Friendliest Club, Umkomaas offers a warm welcome to visitors both on and off the course. Competitions are held weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays and visitors are always welcome.
We look forward to welcoming you soon!

The place to stay when visiting the KZN South Coast
After deciding to do a feature on the golf courses of the KZN South Coast, we then needed to find a place to stay. Ideally, a place that was centrally located within a reasonable driving distance of all the courses in the area. Pumula Beach Hotel was an obvious choice, recommended by all we spoke to and situated right on one of the few select beaches in the country that enjoys Blue Flag status.
On arrival, we were greeted by friendly, efficient staff and taken to our well-appointed rooms, overlooking the Indian Ocean. We were here on work, but it was impossible to not let the holiday mode set in. Their attentive team continued to go above and beyond to make us feel at home, no request seemed too big, and no detail was too small. They certainly take great pride in making a genuine difference to every guest’s experience.
Visitors are indeed spoilt for choice. Never-ending golden beaches, protected bathing, rock pools, surfing, excellent fishing opportunities, the
annual sardine run, and dolphin or whale watching to name a few. They have a heated saltwater pool and toddler pool, where little ones can splash about in a safe, controlled (and warm!) environment, while you get to relax comfortably on a sun lounger in the balmy sub-tropical weather.
Pumula, which means ‘place to rest’, is somewhere you can really relax after a round of golf. As an all-inclusive hotel, your accommodation, all your delicious chef-prepared meals and all-day tea and coffees are included in the rate.
Conveniently situated, just 100km south of Durban, 1.5 hours from King Shaka International Airport and an easy drive from Durban or Johannesburg. It is easy to see why Pumula Beach Hotel has been the destination of choice for families, friends and conference guests for decades.

However, hugging the Kwa Zulu Natal coastline, we have the Indian Ocean Coastal Belt biome.
Along the KZN South Coast, golfers can enjoy at least 11 different golf courses, set in a sub-tropical paradise, with the picturesque Indian Ocean as a backdrop.
Golfers are spoilt for choice.
However, the science indicates that in the future, the available selection of golf courses may be compromised by various climate factors including rising sea levels, erosion, flooding, and heat.
In response to this challenge, many South Coast golf courses have already recognised the threats, and plans are being put in place to mitigate the risks.
These plans are underpinned by gathering and documenting environmental compliance, social responsibility, and good governance (ESG) data, and reporting through management reports, such as the John Collier Survey.
Currently ESG reporting is a requirement for companies registered on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), the London Stock Exchange (LSE) the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE), Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE), and Beijing Stock Exchange (BSE), the European Union’s Corporate Sustainable Reporting Directive (CSRD), the U.S. SEC’s climate disclosure rules, and other jurisdictions, including Australia, Brazil, and Singapore.
Over and above stock exchange compliance, it will not be long before the South African Climate Change Bill (B9 – 2022) will be promulgated and in time the reporting net will close in.
The KZN South Coast golf courses are definitely one of the best kept golfing secrets in South Africa, but if ESG reporting does not become a business imperative, including the mantra, which states - that which is not measured cannot be managed - this sub-tropical golfing paradise, which we enjoy today, may soon become a Paradise Lost.
If you have any queries why not contact the John Collier Survey through our website at https://johncolliergolf.com/, or via email ajcollier@telkomsa.net?

CHRISTO LAMPRECHT TAKES HOLD OF NO. 1 SPOT IN PGA TOUR UNIVERSITY RANKING
After finishing runner-up at the Watersound Invitational in February, Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht overtook the No. 1 spot in the 2024 PGA TOUR University Ranking from Stanford’s Michael Thorbjornsen. This is the second time this season that Lamprecht is at the top of the ranking, as he previously passed Thorbjornsen in October after his victory at the OFCC Fighting Illini Invitational followed by a second-place finish at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational.
In the back-and-forth battle at the top, Lamprecht’s finish at Watersound increased the gap between the top two spots. With Thorbjornsen finishing T17 at The Prestige,
Lamprecht now holds a 41-point lead over the Stanford senior.
The top 10 of the ranking featured lots of movement this week, with the Watersound Invitational, The Prestige and the PGA TOUR’s Mexico Open at Vidanta taking place. Cole Sherwood (Vanderbilt) and Cole Anderson (Florida State) each finished T5 at Watersound. Sherwood moved inside the top-10 to No. 8 and Anderson improved two spots to No. 15. Alabama’s Thomas Ponder recorded a fourth-place finish to move up 12 spots to No. 31.

Petr Hruby (Washington) and Karl Vilips (Stanford) each shared a runner-up finish at The Prestige. Hruby’s second runner-up finish of the season helped him move four spots to No. 14. Vilipsreturned to the top-25 this week, improving six spots to No. 20.
Tyran Snyders (Texas Tech) continued his excellent play and claimed his third top-five finish of the season, resulting in an improvement of four spots to No. 21. Of all competitors at The Prestige, Kansas’ Cecil Belisle topped the leaderboard at 13-under to make the biggest jump this week, improving from No. 123 to No. 80.
Houston’s Santiago De la Fuente notched a T46 finish at the Mexico Open at Vidanta, boosting him 11 spots up the ranking to No. 28. Winner of the Latin America Amateur Championship in January, De la Fuente was the only amateur to make the cut in the PGA TOUR event, finishing at 6-under after an opening-round 67.

For the Pineapple
·1 fresh pineapple
·1 cup of water
·1 cup of granulated white sugar
·1 stick of cinnamon
·2 whole star anise
·2 whole cloves
Method
Recipe
RECIPE: PINEAPPLE SABAYON
RECIPE BY: CHEF LOUIS LESCH
EXECUTIVE CHEF: SIMBITHI COUNTRY CLUB
For the Sabayon
·1 Egg
·2 tbsp granulated white sugar
·1 tbsp white wine vinegar OR
·1 tbsp sweet white wine
To serve: Vanilla ice-cream, Maraschino cherries
1. Peel and core the pineapple and cut into thick-ish slices, about 1.5 to 2cm each.
2. In a medium sized saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and spices.
3. Place the syrup over medium heat until the sugar is completely dissolved.
4. Once the sugar is dissolved, bring to a gentle simmer
5. Add the pineapple slices to the syrup and simmer gently until the pineapple is tender This should take between five and seven minutes.
6. Once the pineapple is tender, put it to the side (you can leave it in the syrup until needed).
7. Now, begin with the sabayon: Fill a medium sized pot to ¼ with water.
8. Bring the water to a rolling boil.
9. In a large, heat proof mixing bowl (one that will sit comfortably on top of the pot with boiling water) add the whole egg, the granulated white sugar and vinegar/wine.
10 Now the hard work starts…
11. You must whisk vigorously and continuously for about 10 to 12 minutes. The more you can aerate the egg mixture, the better Your goal here is to aerate and cook the egg mixture.
12 Once the egg mixture is light coloured and very frothy – like foam, it is ready to use. You can test whether the egg mixture is ready by:
a. Touching a bit of the mixture to your lip. It must feel hot but not burn your lips. Or,
b. If you dangle the whisk over the mixture and let the mixture that is on the whisk drizzle down, it must form a ribbon on the surface of the egg mixture that will hold for at least five seconds. If the mixture seems 'dry' you can add a bit more wine or even water A tablespoon should be more than sufficient.
Plate Up!
As this dessert is sauce-based, it is best to serve it in a bowl. Place a pool of the sabayon, then arrange the cooked pineapple rings in a stack, in the centre of the bowl. Pour over more of the sabayon. Serve with ice-cream and decorate with Maraschino cherries. You can brûlée the dessert if you have a torch.

Plant growth regulators have changed the life of turf managers allowing us to produce a high quality playing surface with a healthier plant (increased rooting & tillering –sideways growth), improved colour & of course playability as the ball sits up so well on a fairway.

After being on the original Primo Maxx trials at Pebble Beach back in 1996. I sprayed NoMow on the kikuyu tees, fairways & semi rough at Leopard Creek when I returned in 1997. With reduced mowing and increased turf quality it is a no brainer.
With a cost saving on maintenance I was able to produce a fantastic playing surface – mowing less

days per week and spraying every 28 days.
Remember to reduce the rate as you increase your height of cut. Fairways would typically be sprayed at 1 litre/ha with 12,5 kg of TT Foliar in 300 litres water per ha. Semi rough – best to reduce the rate to 500 ml/ha. You will soon have a healthy semi –members may even complain that the ball sits up too well!
The great news is we have managed to re-register NoMow for the kikuyu golf and sports field market
of South Africa. This product not only makes your life so much easier it also makes you look like the star!

RHYS RISES TO THE TOP IN SDC OPEN
Welshman Rhys Enoch overcame a weather delay and an onslaught of low scoring in the final round of the Sunshine Tour and European Challenge Tour co-sanctioned SDC Open to claim a two-stroke victory at Zebula Golf Estate and Spa in February.
Enoch started the final round one shot behind the leaders and made three straight birdies from the first on his way to a 66 and a winning total of 24 under par.
It was an emotional triumph for Enoch who dedicated the victory to the passing of his father’s best friend on the Friday
of the tournament. It’s also a win that comes after a difficult past two years of injury for Enoch.
“I had an operation on my left shoulder in April 2022 and I’ve just had a few niggles. I was trying to improve and didn’t quite have the control I needed. But I’m now a bit more settled with what I’m doing and I feel like I’ve stepped up a level, which is nice,” said Enoch.
It was a thrilling final round of some incredible scoring and a weather delay.

Englishman Joshua Berry turned in 29 and was 11 under before the delay and seemingly on track for a 59. A bogey on the restart cost him that honour, but he still signed for a remarkable 61 to finish on 17 under overall.
Deon Germishuys and Martin Rohwer then came surging up the leaderboard and both signed for rounds of 64 to share second place on 22 under par.
But as he rolled in a birdie putt on the last to win, Enoch says he felt an immense sense of relief.
“It’s been three years since I last won and you keep asking when it will happen again. I’m just so happy to be playing the
golf I know I can play again.”
Enoch also wins a four-night stay for two in the Presidential Suite at QWABI Private Game Reserve valued at R150 000 and including accommodation, private dining, drinks, game drives and a signature spa treatment for two.

JUSTIN WALTERS PROUD BY 'STAYING POWER' OF BIRDIES 4 RHINOS
Seven years on since instigating the launch of a conservation charity, Birdies 4 Rhinos, Justin Walters remains as passionate as ever in his mission to unite golfers behind the cause.
Alongside four-time DP World Tour winner Dean Burmester, Walters co-founded the fundraising initiative in 2017 which sees participating players donate money for every birdie they make throughout the season.
The idea was born out of Waters’ fear that his children would grow up not seeing a rhinoceros, with South Africa home to most of the world’s species.
With awareness of the plight of the rhino amid illegal poaching continuing to grow, Walters is pleased by the support he has re-
ceived from within the game to raise funds for conservation projects to protect threatened wildlife.
Among a host of DP World Tour members to offer their support since the launch of Birdies 4 Rhinos are Tommy Fleetwood, Ryan Fox and Ewen Ferguson.
Asked about the progress of the initiative, Walters told the DP World Tour: “At the beginning of last year, Tommy Fleetwood came on board. That was a big moment for us. He’s very passionate about wildlife.
“A lot of the players are now starting to see and talk about it. The more players we have

and the more interest from the public we have, then the more money and awareness we can raise. It’s like a snowball effect.
“We’ve also brought on one person that’s helped to revamp the whole website for merchandise and how it gets shipped and procured, and that’s been huge.
“We’ve brought on another person to help count all the birdies because it’s actually quite a time consuming affair every month to build the leaderboards, counting the cards of the 25 odd players.” Walters, 43, admits his desire is to have player representation from across the world.
broad base from all over the world, so you get someone representing all corners and I think that’s really important.”
He added: “Players go through different transitions in their career. They might not play as much, they might lose their card and they might not want to donate money or be a part of the programme.
“So as someone drops out, it’s nice to have someone join in, so it’s always important to keep people that are interested. But it’s not something that’s ever really forced on anyone or, you know, we don’t go shopping for players.”
“Obviously, the more players you have, the more money you know you you’re able to raise, but I think it would be nice to get a
While a Birdies4Rhinos leaderboard tracks the progress of how players are doing on the course, online purchases of merchandise and donations from the public are also an important source of the funds raised for projects across Africa.

MALIK SECURES SUPERSPORT LADIES CHALLENGE TITLE
India’s Tvesa Malik claimed her first professional win on foreign soil as she kept the ball on the fairways and putted well to win the SuperSport Ladies Challenge presented by Sun International by three strokes at the Lost City Golf Club in February.
Malik began the final round as co-leader with 2022 SuperSport Ladies Challenge champion Paula Reto, and the 28-year-old produced the sort of
controlled golf required on the last day to clinch titles. Malik made just two bogeys, one on each nine, but collected three birdies to post a one-under-par 71 and finish on nine-under overall.
It was a round that none of the other contenders could better.

and really firm. The greens are big so hitting from good positions on the fairways is fine and my putting is what I was most pleased with. I gave myself several opportunities and I hit so many good putts that just did not go in. But then 10-foot birdies on the 11th and 16th holes were really important,” Malik said.
“I just wanted to focus today and not get too wrapped up in every shot being do-or-die. I just tried to stay stable mentally and not stress too much about making birdies. I am thrilled and relieved to have my first pro win outside India.”
First-round leader Lauren Taylor drew level with Malik as she collected two birdies on a faultless front nine, but the Englishwoman saw her chances go up in smoke when she came home in 41 shots with three bogeys and a double drop on the par-four 16th.
Reto found herself on a sinking ship on the front nine, as she double-bogeyed both the second and sixth holes to go out in 40. The South African fought back on the back nine to come home in 35 shots and finished third on five-under-par.
