LE T TER TO THE EDITOR
LETTER TO THE EDITOR Send us your letters, giving us your views, opinions or articles of interest (max 500 words). The most interesting letter will be published in the next edition of SA Golf Trader. To the editor
Dear Jane
Seven friends and I played a morning round of golf this week. The course we played was in great shape, nevertheless the rough was a little tough. We teed off a little early, just after 7am.
Thank you for your letter.
We were hoping for a pleasant day of golf but what we got was a lot off waiting and standing around in the hot sun waiting for the group in front of us to clear. It wasn’t that group’s fault nor was it the group in front of them. Somewhere up ahead a group was playing slower than the pace of play and making a nice day of golf miserable for all the groups behind them. We finished 4 hours and 45 minutes later and not one of us enjoyed the day. I wish the course marshalls would do a better job and move slower groups along so that we all can enjoy the golf courses and not just one slow group.
Slow play is a bugbear for golfers and golf clubs alike and the problem needs to be addressed by both parties. Simple things such as moving quickly between shots, taking multiple clubs with you to your next shot if you are uncertain, limiting the banter and letting faster groups through go a long way to speeding play along. Golf clubs must also be mindful of their course set-up and tee time intervals as these factors play a big role.
Regards

he vast majority of golfers arrive for their tee time full of excitement, ready to play the best round of their lives and really pumped up for thei day on-course, expecting to hit some amazing golf shots and to score well. The reality is, they most certainly will hit some amazing golf shots, but th are guaranteed to also hit a whole bunch of bad ones. It is unfortunately our expectations before each round and going into each shot, that can do much more harm than good.
The belief that the best players in the world hit every shot close and make eve putt could not be further from the truth and unfortunately creates completely unrealistic expectations on how we, as casual golfers, should manage ourselve on the golf course and should be performing. To best illustrate this point, the average proximity to the hole from 100 – 125 yards (approx. 90m to 110m) on the PGA Tour is 31.7 ft (Approx. 10m). Many players I work with, will tell you, when asked, that tour average from this distance would be inside 10ft or arou 3m. What these false expectations do is lead to poor decision making! Amateu and weekend golfers are aiming way to aggressively at flags which leads to ba misses and big numbers. Additionally, that when we hit a wedge of some sort 9m from the hole, we get upset and angry resulting in more poor golf, beratin ourselves and killing our confidence, when in fact it is actually a world class go shot.

In putting, tour players are only making 50% of putts from just outside 7ft (2m). There is this belief that tour players never miss short putts. If you pace out 2m and ask someone at your local club how many putts out of 10 a tour player makes from that distance, I can guarantee they will suggest 8/9 out of 10.
Based on these numbers, you absolutely have to be kinder to yourself and reduce your expectations, the nature of golf dictates that you will hit bad shots, you will get bad bounces, you will miss putts both long and short ones, but if your expectations are realistic, you will enjoy it significantly more and ultimately perform better with higher levels of acceptance after each shot and an overall more relaxed approach to each shot.

Greens resurfacing project Golf data started this project with the aim or ridding the greens of the POA that had taken over. It started with the staff sod cutting the greens into strips and then to be removed by hand and by a bobcat. This was all dumped in a stockpile to be collected by truck later on and removed off site. Stripping took a week till completion. Brett our construction manager got to work tying in the sand to the edges and where need be the surrounds weere dropped so the greens would all tie back in. Soon after this a team came from Cape Town to fumigate the greens to rid of any foreign grasses left in the greens profile. Furrows were dug along the whole green then plastic fitted on top. This was air tight and then the gas was pumped in under the plastic. This sat for 10 days with us running around adding water for weight as the strong winds were trying their best to rip up the plastic sheeting. Once the ten days were up we started removing the plastic and the construction crew got stuck to the sand base with the “fluffy’’. Which is a steel plate with teeth dragged behind

He then checked the grades tp make sure the water flowed off the green and not sit in any holes. Final float was then done. A soil amendment fertiliser was added to help aid the growth of the seeds. Seed was applied in 2 directions and we went with 007 bentgrass. Which we feel will do well and perform excellently once grown in.

SWEET & SHORT In our last edition we focused on 9-hole Golf Courses and the fact that you can always find time for nine. An obvious extension to that is Mashie Golf Courses and Driving Ranges which offer an excellent way to sharpen your skills and have loads of fun all within a reasonable time frame.
A mashie was a pre-20th century golf club with a loft of about 33-degrees, wooden shafted and used for approach shots. A 6-iron or 7-iron, sharing characteristics with the mashie, would be the typical club of choice on a short course which subsequently became known as a “mashie course.” Practicing your short game on a par three pitch and putt is perfect for experienced golfers while also being a great place for beginners to learn golf. Furthermore, it is the ideal place to practice your iron shots or concentrate on improving your chip shots and making those up and downs so that you can play your best golf ever.

1. Where were you born and what schools did you attend? I was born in Pretoria many moons ago, I attended Laerskool Elarduspark and moved on to Hoerskool Waterkloof where I matriculated.
growth. The same goes for maintenance on the course, a bigger facility equates to more machinery, employees, consumables, the list goes on. The fundamentals stay the same, just more responsibility and sleepless nights!
2. Do you come from a sporting background? Yes, I played rugby my whole schooling career and participated in athletics in the off-season.
7. Is there a handicap rating system for mashie courses? To answer this quickly, NO. Golf RSA has done our course/slope rating and an unofficial calculation has been made to translate ones handicap index to our course handicap. There are talks between numerous entities to develop a nationally recognized handicap index for par-3 facilities. How far this is in the development stages one can only guess. What would this mean for par-3 facilities across the country and for the game of golf? A major game-changer for entry level golfers!
3. Do you have any sporting hobbies? Its not surprising that I play golf socially but apart from that, I love triathlons. Mastering 3 disciplines compressed into one event is enough adrenaline for the whole year. If I don’t play golf or train you will find me camping or hiking somewhere in the Drakensberg with the family. 4. How did you get into the business of club management? Well, my journey started over 15 years ago in Scotland where I worked in a hotel that had a 9-hole course as part of their leisure facilities. I befriended the greenkeeper and got intrigued with golf. My journey then started at Centurion CC back in 2005 in the greenkeeping industry where my passion for golf and business management lead to my position at Thatchfield Golf Club today. 5. Did you do any tertiary education in the industry? Yes, from a Turfgrass Management Diploma at TUT to a Golf Course Management higher international certificate at Elmwood College. I am currently busy with a MID Diploma in Club Management through the Club Management Association of America. 6. What differences are there in terms of maintenance between a range/mashie course compared to a normal 18-hole golf course? Most businesses have the same fundamentals that need to be applied for sustainability and

8. Do you run competitive events at the mashie course and/or driving range? Yes, we`ve had numerous competitions on the course and driving range. Ranging from our annual club championships for members to compete to longest drive events on the range, the experience is different and that is why we have so much success. 9. What are the differences in driving range balls as opposed to regular golf balls? You would have to ask the reps at the big golfing brands about technical ball composition but in laymen’s terms, a range ball is designed for repetitive ball striking, the design probably leans more towards a hardened feel as apposed to where ball flight, trajectory and performance of the response of a “normal” golf ball is key. On our range we have water features and dams designed to give a “real feel” scenario of what you would expect on an 18-hole course. We make use of floating range balls (quite

pricy) to accommodate easy collection from our water hazards. 10. Is golf etiquette more relaxed on the mashie course? I would say yes because we do attract a lot more “newby” golfers to the facility as to what I feel a well-established 18-hole (without mashie) would attract. To give you an idea, we recorded more than 25000 feet/rounds at the club last year, almost 30% of that figure were people playing golf for the very first time. Asking newbies to spend R500 on golfing apparel before they even touch their clubs would chase them away. We do however feel strongly about a couple of general etiquette/ rules like quantities (4ball) of golfers playing together, speed of play, pitch mark and divot repairs and general use of flag poles and bunker rakes. We focus on a relaxed and fun environment for everyone to come and enjoy.
game driving or in a long iron shot where the rest is basically chip and putt. 12. What other activities do you offer at Thatchfield? Well, the facility was designed almost 20 years ago with the short game in mind but on steroids. Apart from a world-class driving range and a full USGA specification 9-hole mashie we have putting and chipping greens to choose from to further assist in perfecting different shots and putting types. If you would like to take a breather from golf we also have a designated fishing area where catching bass is the main attraction. Catering for events like birthday parties or year-end functions forms part of our offerings to the public looking for a social event in a scenic environment.
11. In my experience, many people who visit the driving range tend to favour their driver, don’t you think people should concentrate more on their short game? It is all about the short game right? Perfecting your clubs from 8 upwards is crucial, it’s interesting to see how stats on the worlds top 10 current golfers and their short game averages weigh up against those with a lower percentage average. You spend 20% of your

NE WS CLIP Driving ranges are facilities where golfers can practice their golf swing. They can also serve as recreational activities for amateur golfers or when enough time for a full game is not available. Many golf courses have a driving range attached and they are also found as stand-alone facilities, especially in urban areas. They are typically run by businesses or sometimes by universities. Distances are usually marked by target greens at regular distances. Driving ranges may have natural grass, similar to a golf course, or players may use synthetic mats that resemble real turf.
Golfers pay for various sizes of buckets of balls, usually designated as small (30–50 balls), medium (50-80 balls), and large (80-150 balls), and hit at their leisure. Some ranges feature electronic tee devices, which load balls automatically, and record ball use on a smart card. Often there are golf professionals available to give lessons and instruction. Balls are retrieved by a specialty cart with a brush and roller attachment that automatically picks up balls and a cage that protects the driver from incoming balls. John Collier Survey “MASHED POTATO...”
G
olf fans, in general, are a pretty respectful bunch, but every so often they ditch the reverential silence of the course to shout completely random nonsense. According to Metro News in the UK, the ‘mashed potato’ shout was made famous by golf fan Andrew Widmar, who was identified by The Golf Channel as the man behind the epic outburst at the Chevron World Championship in 2011. Tiger Woods had played his tee shot on the 18th and Widmar unleashed his comment for the world to hear. Widmar, however, admitted that he did not come up with the incredibly witty idea: ‘I’d seen it before on YouTube. ‘My friends thought it was stupid, but I thought it was hilarious. … I wish I could take credit for starting it, but I will take credit for it becoming popular. It’s a good one to yell,
34
because it’s nice and quick and it means absolutely nothing.’ But I digress, whilst the John Collier Annual Survey does not keep specific data on driving ranges and mashie golf courses, we acknowledge the integral part these facilities play in the game of golf. Apparently, the derivation of the word “mashie” comes from the French word “massue” meaning “club”. Many of the golf clubs manufactured between 1901 and 1935 came from Scotland which included Mid-mashie: 3 Iron; Mashie iron: 4 Iron; Mashie: 5 Iron and Spade mashie: 6 Iron. The modern-day golf club most closely resembling the mashie clubs are the 5-iron or 6-iron but in loft and use only. Therefore, these clubs share the characteristics with the mashie, would be the typical club of choice on a short course which subsequently became known as a “mashie course.”

Have fun and sharpen up your short game at Creek 9 It’s a mid-week morning and Malcolm Hendricks, a Creek 9 regular, has taken an hour out of his busy day to play the picturesque, tree-lined 9-hole Par 3 mashie course located in Johannesburg’s Roosevelt Park suburb and managed by Randpark Club. “I’m so involved with work - I have my own business - and I don’t have time to play full 18-hole rounds on a full-length course so Creek 9 suits me just fine. It’s fun, it’s a way to keep my game in shape, a round only takes an hour or so and it’s very relaxed,” says Malcolm who is accompanied by his five-year-old non-golfing daughter Danelle who, while Dad hits his shots, uses the opportunity to do some exploring in amongst the many beautiful trees. The course is a public facility and frequented by players of all ages with varying ability. It is run on a pitch and play
36
basis, so no bookings are taken. It is perfect for a family outing and ideal for those new to the game. The holes vary in length between 83 metres and 210 metres and each hole has two tee boxes. Because of the many trees accuracy is important so it’s a good place to sharpen up your short game. Creek 9 is found on the corner of Anton Van Wouw Street and Preller Drive in Roosevelt Park next to the Roosevelt Park Recreation Centre. The course is open Tuesdays to Sundays, from 7 am to 5 pm (last tee time is at 4 pm) but is closed on Mondays. Fun-filled “Foot Golf” is also played here whereby a soccer ball is kicked from the tee boxes into big holes situated alongside the golf greens. Throughout the week there are concessions for scholars, pensioners and Randpark members.

Improve your game and have fun at Randpark’s Driving Range Randpark’s Driving Range, a high-tech Inrange facility, the only one in Gauteng and one of only two in South Africa, is completely revolutionising a golfer’s driving range experience. Emptying a bucket of balls followed by a frustrating hit-and-miss period of “spray and pray” is a thing of the past with Inrange. Designed by South African engineers with a growing global presence and already in place at the famed David Leadbetter Academy in Orlando, Florida, Inrange – to put it simply – uses ingenious technology involving a ball-tracking system and radar sensors placed in and around the range to create the ideal practice and entertainment environment for golfers of all skill levels. Data is relayed either to an in-bay touchscreen or via the cloud to the Inrange app on the player’s mobile device. Easily covering the 46 bays at Randpark’s two-tier weather-proof range, these sensors can track dozens of balls hit simultaneously, each from a different origin, and provide detailed data on speed, trajectory, path, landing point and more, to within a yard.
Having Inrange® in your arsenal is like having a golfing “secret weapon”. Some of the many benefits include: • Being able to track every club in your bag. How far you’re hitting it, how accurately, how high, how low. How good, how bad. You can use this information to take the edges off your weaknesses and power up your existing strengths making for better golf out on the course. • Improving your consistency – by choosing a target to aim at, Inrange lets you know how consistently you’re hitting the right shot. • Having fun – You can get your mates together and head on down to the range for a complete entertainment experience even if you’ve never picked up a golf club before. Some of the games you can play: Inrange+ Games – Longest Drive, Bullseye, Twenty One, Shrinking Target. Inrange+ Courses – transports you onto the course to pit your skills against meticulously mapped virtual fairways, sandtraps and water hazards without ever leaving your bay. Randpark’s Driving Range offers so much more … a contemporary-style café with a great selection of casual dining meals, served on the range or while seated at the café. State of the art coaching studios with Trackman and Wellputt. Randpark adventure golf, a 9-hole putt-putt course and a demo club studio, showcasing a wide variety of second-hand clubs. If practice, play and fun is on your bucket list then it is time to visit the Randpark Driving Range!

he European Tour will visit the historic Muthaiga Golf Club for the first time when the Magical Kenya Open returns to the Race to Dubai from March 3-6, 2022. The Magical Kenya Open has a history dating back to 1967 and appeared on the European Tour’s schedule for the first time in 2019, having previously taken its place on the Challenge Tour schedule since 1991. Justin Harding claimed the 2021 Magical Kenya Open title courtesy of a two-stroke triumph over American Kurt Kitayama, with the South African winning for the second time on the European Tour and eighth time overall on the African continent, having seven Sunshine Tour victories already to his name. tradition and with the support of the European Tour, we plan to host a truly memorable 2022 Kenya Open Championship.” Cabinet Secretary for Sports Culture and Heritage, Amb. Dr. Amina Mohamed, hailed the Magical Kenya Open as a Kenyan asset: “The Magical Kenya Open has grown in popularity and stature as one of the hallmarks of the Kenyan sporting calendar. As the Government, we appreciate the cordial relationship that we enjoy with the European Tour and we hope to see more of the events hosted here in future.” She added: “The presence of top golfers from all over the world on Kenyan soil gives our young golfers role models that they can emulate. The Ministry of Sports will continue to work with the Kenya Golf Union to popularise the game of golf among our young people. We remain hopeful that our junior golfers will tap into the experience and inspiration as they follow their golf stars in person here at the Muthaiga Golf Club. We hope that it will translate in one of our young golfers winning the tournament in the near future.”

ASIAN TOUR UNVEILS 2021 RESUMPTION PLANS
T
he Asian Tour today announced exciting and ambitious plans to stage a series of season-ending tournaments to finish its 2020-21 schedule, ensuring that the Tour can complete its Order of Merit, and crown a Merit list champion.
In January, following the Christmas and New Year breaks, the Tour is planning to stage two more tournaments in Singapore over consecutive weeks. All four tournaments will be broadcast live on television with further details to be announced soon.
The Tour, which stopped play in March last year because of the pandemic, will make its eagerly awaited return by staging back-to-back inaugural events at two of the most renowned golf courses on Phuket Island in Thailand with purses of US$1 million respectively.
The sprint to the season’s finish line is expected to be more exciting than ever, as the top 30 players from the final Order of Merit will receive automatic entry into next year’s season-opening US$5 million Saudi International powered by SoftBank Investment Advisers.
The Blue Canyon Championship will first take place at Blue Canyon Country Club from November 25-28, followed by the Laguna Phuket Championship, which will be held at the Laguna Phuket Resort from December 2-5.
The four Asian Tour events played in early 2020 will be added to the blended 2020-21 schedule. Australian Wade Ormsby has led the Order of Merit throughout the hiatus since winning the Hong Kong Open last January.

AFFORDABLE GOLF - THE GARDEN ROUTE
Follow us on
At Oubaai this is the cornerstone of our belief. Home means something different to all, but a home should be a place that nourishes the body, mind and spirit. This is the underlying value that has created and grown Oubaai Golf Resort into the outstanding residential estate that it is today. Situated adjacent to Herolds Bay on the Garden Route, a mere 8 minutes from George Airport, this hidden gem is ideally located with 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean. Authentic is one of the first words that comes to mind when thinking about Oubaai, designed to blend in with the natural splendor of the Cape. The eco-friendly ethos has created a natural paradise – providing a haven to an array of wildlife. State of the art security systems offer complete peace of mind, enabling Oubaai residents to wander the expanse of the 546 hectare estate without a worry. The Ernie Els 18 hole Championship course is kept in mint condition and it is one of the most beautiful settings that can be seen anywhere in the golfing world. It was recently awarded 3rd best conditioned course in Southern Cape and 10th in South Africa. The layout of the course is a traditional links type layout where veld grasses line the manicured fairways. The course measures 6,516 meters from the pro tees, which is uniquely long for a coastal course.

LEWTHWAITE CLAIMS INVITATIONAL WIN ON HER RETURN HOME
L
ejan Lewthwaite shrugged off a poor season abroad, coming back home to claim a solid playoff win in the Standard Bank Pro-Am Invitational at Randpark Golf Club in October. The Standard Bank Pro-Am Invitational is the final Order of Merit event for the professionals and comes at the back of an eight-tournament pro-am series that was played at venues across Gauteng from March, with the eighth tournament played at Randpark. The series was launched early last year but could not be played due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 but with the restrictions loosened and with health protocols in place, the series finally teed off at Killarney Country Club in March. “It’s good to be back home and playing good golf again,” said Lewthwaite. “I haven’t had a very good year overseas, so it’s really nice to be back home and playing decent golf again. What Standard bank has done for us is huge; another corporate coming to support ladies golf is massive for the growth of the sport and the development of women’s golf. “I know I missed a few of these tournaments because I was overseas but as soon as I was able to come home, I made sure I was available to play and I’m so glad I did.”
tournament of the Standard Bank Pro-Am Series which was also played on the Firethorn layout at Randpark. Nobuhle Dlamini – who is also the Standard Bank Golf Development ambassador – and Ivanna Samu shared victory there since there was no playoff for the pro-am. That was Dlamini’s second win while it was Samu’s fourth in the series. “It feels really good to win the last series event, it was under tough conditions but fun,” said Dlamini, “It’s been a great initiative from standard bank. I’ve seen it from the beginning, the growth that has happened so far is tremendous. From kids learning to play up to pros surviving and taking their career further through the Standard Bank-sponsored events. There’s so much positivity around the events, it can only get better.” Having won four events and the Order of Merit prize after a difficult two years of struggling with health

The jewel of the Simbithi Country Club is undoubtedly the magnificent 18-hole golf course, designed by Peter Matkovich. Thoughtfully-placed greens that hold a well-struck shot, pristine fairways and a layout that allows you to play every club in your bag. South Africa’s first executive course, Simbithi has a par of 60 comprising par-3s, par-4s and one par 5. Each hole is intriguingly named after the area it occupied when Simbithi was once farmland.
Simbithi Country Club incorporates a selection of eateries, wedding and conference venues and, of course, the unparalleled 18-hole Executive Golf Course.

WESTERN PROVINCE FINISH ON TOP IN SA MID-AM IPT Western Province added yet another Inter-Provincial title to their collection this year when the Mid-Amateur team took the honours at Elements Private Golf Reserve in October. The Union has achieved unprecedented success in the IPTs in 2021, with victories in the Men’s and Women’s premier events, as well as the Senior and Super Senior IPTs. On top of that, the women comfortably won the WGSA 72-hole Teams Championship in April. The Western Province Mid-Am team came agonisingly close to winning the title two years ago on home soil, when one bad session cost them dearly and they lost out to Gauteng North. This year, they were determined to claim the title and keep the province’s momentum going. In the end, they had the tournament wrapped up with a day to spare, thanks to victories against KwaZulu-Natal and Free State on the first day, a narrow win against Ekurhuleni on day two, and maximum points against Eastern Province and Central Gauteng on day three. When nearest rivals Free State slipped up against Central Gauteng on the penultimate day – while Western Province enjoyed a rest day – the title was theirs for the first time since 2016. Not even a narrow final-day loss to Gauteng North could dampen their spirits as the Western Province team added yet another IPT trophy to the bulging cabinet.
74
“The team really had a special week,” said team manager Werner Theart. “Obviously they played well, and particularly in the big moments, but I was so impressed with the spirit amongst the guys. It is a great achievement for us to win an inland IPT– as all our other wins have come at the coast.” “Obviously we were gutted to lose to Gauteng North in our backyard two years ago, but we came here with a great team and a great team spirit, and got the job done,” he said. “It’s a pity that we couldn’t win the last one, but well done to Gauteng North, who was the better team on the day. “We came here with five rookies, so on paper we probably didn’t rate as favourites, but everyone on the team put their hand up to get us to the finish line. I want to applaud all the guys for their incredible commitment and team spirit and send a big thank you to our manager for all his hard work.” Western Province Golf president Mike de Swardt was delighted to receive the good news. “It’s unbelievable,” he said. “So many little things have to go right to achieve these results. It’s hard to put my finger on it, but we have such a talented group of players here in Cape Town and we also have an established executive that runs the Union. It’s fantastic that all our teams seem to hit form at the right time.” Meanwhile Central Gauteng finished as group runners-up, just a point behind Western Province, with Gauteng North in third, a further point adrift.

A M AT E U R N E W S Free State claimed fourth spot, with Eastern Province in fifth. The relegation battle between Ekuhuleni and KwaZulu-Natal went down to the wire, but in the end, it was the men from the coast who was sent down to the B Section, losing on a games count-out after both teams finished on two log points. One of Western Province’s novices also clinched the Most Valuable Player honour. Roux Burger enjoyed an unbeaten week and claimed the top spot on 12 points, edging out Eastern Province’s Dillon Germshuys by 1 point. Geno Belfiore – another Province first-timer – tied for third on 10 points with Louis Moolman from Gauteng North, while former KZN standout Derek Scullard, who lined up for Central Gauteng, shared fifth on points with Ryno Ferreira from EP.

pristine course.
The 2021 champions sounded a warning on day one when they downed Northern Cape and Southern Cape. After a second-round bye, the side shot back into pole position after mowing down Border and Boland and wrapped up the promotion battle with a commanding result over Limpopo in round four.
North West, not surprisingly, also dominated the Most Valuable Player’s list.
“Our team spirit and our dominance in the foursomes were key to our success,” said North West manager Leon Bevan on day four.
FINAL B-SECTION LOG
“When we faced Southern Cape on day one, we knew we were in for a tough match. Southern Cape was relegated at the last IPT in 2019 and edging them really set the tone for us for the week. After that we just kept on improving and we wanted to finish the tournament on a high note. “The commitment from the guys showed in our final round performance. We are a team without stars; we are eight guys who played for each other, for our manager and for our union. We are proud to return as the champions.
Southern Cape finished second, Boland third and the host union, thanks to a huge 10 – 2 win over Northern Cape took fourth place on the final log.
Krugel and team-mate Wessel Louwrens shared the top spot honours on 10.5 points, while fellow North Westers Doug McCabe and Nic Weber shared third on 9.5 points with Janneman Combrink from Mpumalanga.

LYALL THE LIONHEART SEALS DREAM VICTORY AT GLENDOWER Lyall McNeill carded the low round of the day to win the 2021 South African Senior Amateur Championship on debut at Glendower GC at the end of October. The KZN golfer posted a closing two-under-par 70 to finish at level for the tournament. He was pushed all the way by American Tom Sweigart, who carded his third successive 73 to finish on three-over in second place, three shots behind the maiden winner. McNeill, who turned 50 in November last year, had three wins and two runner-up finishes in his five starts on the GolfRSA senior circuit. “It’s been an amazing start and to stand here, holding the SA Senior Amateur trophy is incredible,” McNeill said. “This was the first big tournament I played since I joined the senior circuit and I looked forward to it with some trepidation, but it has just been amazing. I feel very honoured and proud to leave as the champion. “It was pretty bunched at the top of the leaderboard, but as we teed off, the rain dissipated, so we were very lucky with the later start to get the better conditions,” McNeill said. “They always say no lead is big enough and I had a couple of missed putts there towards the end, but they fortunately didn’t count, and I managed to get it over the line. I enjoyed playing with Tom and Graeme – he is such a tough competitor. He had a bad first nine, but he came back strong.

The Ebotse golfer carded 74 and had to settle for a share of fourth on five-over with Rustenburg’s Johan Krugel, who signed for 71. HOW FEMALE ROLE MODELS ARE CHANGING THE GAME OF GOLF When young girls –who have never dreamt of becoming golfers – see successful female golfers blazing trails on the golf courses of South Africa and beyond, this is when the game will truly capture their imaginations and create a desire to partake. This is the thinking behind Standard Bank’s Golf Development Programme, which is affiliated with top female role models such as Ladies European Tour professional golfer Nobuhle Dlamini, who now ranks 51st in the world amateur lady rankings. As the programme’s ambassador and knowing how a little encouragement can inspire others –and just a couple of days after returning from doing duty in Europe – Dlamini was overseeing the start of Level One of the Standard Bank Golf Development Programme at Nomimi Primary School in Orange Farm, in the Midvaal. This was before she went on to win the Standard Bank Pro-Am Series tournament that was held at the magnificent Silverlakes Golf Estate in Tshwane on Thursday, 7 October.
“There is room for everyone to grow – from the young beginner who is setting foot on a golf course for the first time to top amateur and professional players wanting more playing time so that they can further hone their skills.” Nobuhle herself confirms that golf in South Africa has become far more accessible to young girls and women than when she first started playing. “I wish I had had such facilities available to me when I first got introduced to the sport,” she says, referring to the Standard Bank Golf Development Programme. “I hope in working closely with the organisation we can reach more young girls and women and help close the accessibility gap through the development clinics.” For girls and young women not yet convinced about the benefits of taking up golf, here are a few more advantages to consider:
“As more and more young South African girls and women are discovering, there is no game like golf for opening doors in all walks of life,” says Lee-John Maans, Head: Personal Banking, Gauteng Province at Standard Bank. “Whether your aim is to work towards a place at the pinnacle of the sport – as Nobuhle and others are doing – or simply to play golf for the joy of it, there has never been a better time for young South African girls and women to take up the sport.” An Ambassador of the Standard Bank Golf Development Programme, Nobuhle will also be visiting the golf clinics arranged for the day and offering the participants – all aspiring young female golfers – some tips on how to be great at the game of golf.
78
This is because the level and quality of support for young female golfers is unprecedented, says Maans.
Playing golf helps your ability to focus and concentrate, relieves stress, and has an overall calming effect. It’s a healthy activity. Played outdoors and in the fresh air, golf can provide moderate-intensity physical exercise that counters the effects of today’s sedentary lifestyle. Golf is a great way to network, which can enhance career and business success. It’s empowering and uplifting, particularly for young girls and women. “The sport has transitioned immensely in recent years, with girls and women making their presence felt on the golf course,” adds Maans. “As a financial institution, we are excited to be part of the drive to grow women’s golf on all levels and create opportunities for women golfers.”

Switching off in a world that is always on The Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdowns seem to have blurred the lines between work, home and play, making it tough for employees and entrepreneurs to completely switch off and reap the benefits of any “down time” they may be able to carve out for themselves. “The stress of the last year has seen people work harder than ever to protect their livelihoods, which is why taking well-deserved break has become more important than ever,” says Shaun Lamont, Managing Director of First Group Hotels and Resorts. In fact, according to the American Psychological Association, going on holiday improves your physical health by decreasing the risk of heart disease, and improving mental health by reducing depression and anxiety. Shaun says that that whilst most recognise the benefits of going on holiday, many are failing to reap those benefits. “We have witnessed firsthand the lines of pleasure being blurred by business as more and more of our guests are plagued with work whilst on vacation. ”He adds, “Going on holiday is the equivalent of sending your brain in for its annual service. You wouldn’t let your car skip its annual check-up and risk a breakdown on the highway, so why do this to your body? Equally essential to taking the time off to go away, is ensuring that you maximise the health benefits thereof by totally embracing the moment.” To do this, Shaun offers 5 tips on how to switch off on holiday: 1. Do a proper hand over to your stand in: The key to a successful stress-free, work-free holiday is a comprehensive hand over. Ease into the idea of being away, by using your email signature to notify everybody of your upcoming leave (way before you’ve even left). Find a reliable, capable colleague who you can trust to be a point of contact in your absence, and hand over any and all outstanding pieces of work to them. Tell your clients, manager/s and employees that you will be uncontactable (gulp!), set your out of office message and update your voicemail (if you still have one).
84
2. Turn off your phone: As scary as this may sound for someone who is always available, this is a biggie! Unless you turn your phone off totally (putting it on silent just won’t cut it), there will still be messages, emails, news alerts, and app notifications coming through constantly. Your phone is always screaming for your attention so vow to only check it once a day! 3. Take time to unwind and take it easy: Resolve to do less. Don’t try to fill your daily itinerary with as much as possible. Pick just one thing per day - one sight to see, one restaurant to try, one mountain to climb… and then relax for the rest of the day. Laze at the pool, read a book, take an afternoon siesta. You don’t want to feel like you need a holiday from your holiday. 4. Pick the right accommodation: Where you stay can affect your entire holiday experience. If you are travelling with children, make sure you go to a child-friendly resort. If you are going away without the kids, consider a quieter hotel/ resort. If you hate the beach, don’t pick a beach holiday – you’ll be miserable. 5. Be present in the moment: Delay the desire to post every photo on social media. Be present in every moment and make lasting, magical memories with your travel crew. If you want to capture the moment, ensure that your data/WIFI on your phone is turned off, so you don’t get tempted into checking notifications. Just use your camera and post the pics later. For those who absolutely can’t afford time off work, Shaun suggests that you consider the idea of a workation, “COVID has changes the rules of work. You no longer have to be confined to the four walls of your dining room or office cubicle. Instead, you can choose to work from some of South Africa’s most beautiful spots and be surrounded by nature or have a sea view. First Group properties, for example, lend themselves to catching up on Zoom or Teams and then taking a break to soak in the scenery – a wonderful balance of work and play. After all, if you’re going to work, why not make it the best of it?” Shaun concludes.

Bellerive adds the Presidents Cup to its storied history of hosting the game’s most prestigious events dating back to the 1965 U.S. Open won by Gary Player, who completed the career grand slam with his victory in St. Louis. Since then, Bellerive welcomed the 1981 U.S. Mid-Amateur; two PGA Championships (1992, 2018); the 2001 World Golf Championships-American Express

The course underwent a major renovation in 2005, as well as strategic renovations in 2013 and 2019, all of which were led by Jones’ son, Rees Jones, whose work helped position Bellerive to host more of the game’s premier events well into the future.

PAUL CASEY'S CADDIE, JOHN MCLAREN, TO TAKE MENTAL HEALTH BREAK
J
ohn McLaren has been called many things over his lengthy and impressive caddie career. Obvious things like true professional or hard working and sincere. Others like fun-loving, friendly and approachable. And more obscure things like wine connoisseur, restaurant guru and fashion icon. But now his boss Paul Casey is adding “courageous” as McLaren begins an indefinite mental health break from the game. He is speaking out to increase awareness for others who may also be facing similar pressures.
Championship in Dubai in November before finishing up with Casey’s title defence at the Dubai Desert Classic early next year. McLaren, 55, who has carried sticks for Luke Donald and Tony Johnstone among others in the past 31 years, came to the realization that the anxiety of cross-Atlantic travel on a regular basis in this current pandemic-punctured world was not healthy.
The CJ Cup @ Summit in Las Vegas marked McLaren’s last tournament in the U.S. for some time. He will stay on Casey’s bag for the European Tour’s season ending DP World Tour

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK is the Golfer from the past?
WHO
• • • • • • • • •
Born on the 12th December 1928, he was a South African professional golfer of ethnic Indian origin. He began his career as a caddie for amateur golfer Graham Wulff. He qualified for the 1959 Open Championship and finished 13th at the same event in 1963. He was the first non-white to take part in the South African Open (1961). Just two years after he broke the colour barrier he finished second, losing by one shot to Retief Waltman. He won the Dutch Open in 1959 and defended his title the following year. He won it again in 1964. In 1963 he became the first golfer of colour to win a provincial open in South Africa, the Natal Open. In 1965, he won the Natal Open for a second time, defeating runner-up Gary Player. He was noted for his unconventional grip, holding the club with his right hand above the left. He died impoverished in 1978 at the age of 48. Answer on page 110
