In my opinion the Olympic Games were a bit of a damp squib, except however for the golf.
Golf’s inclusion as an Olympic sport really highlights what many have said for many years, golfers are athletes. Lining up these men and women with runners, swimmers, triathletes and more cements golf as being ‘athletic’ and a true sport in every sense of the word.
Research indicates that walking a round of golf is moderate to high exercise intensity for aging adults and low to moderate for middle-aged people. The Olympics were a great opportunity to refresh the image and perception of golf in peoples’ minds and I certainly think that goal was achieved. Well done to Scottie Scheffler and Lydia Ko.

In my opinion the Olympics seemed bizarre in many aspects. That said, I found the golf to be riveting and totally agree with you that the event had a very positive impact on the game.
Golf was played at the Olympics in 1900 and 1904 but was stopped due to a dispute over the format between players and the Olympic committee. It only came back at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Seeing the elation on Scheffler and Ko’s faces when receiving their gold medals also brought home the fact that it is not always about money.

Over the next 6 editions the BSI Coaching Team will bring you a series of articles on how to make your practice more effective and more fun. We start with some key concepts of learning science, or in simple terms, how to get better faster.
Technical vs Skills Training
As golfers we tend to get too caught up in the technique of the swing or short game, thinking that perfecting technique is the secret. While it is important to develop or maintain good technique, much of your practice should focus on skills-based training, which focuses on building the required skills for effective golf.
Each area of golf requires certain key skills. For example, good putting requires 3 skills;
• Green reading
• Pace control
• Start-line control
If you build these 3 skills and can execute consistently under pressure, then you are a good putter. How much do you practice these skills? Probably not much at all. Here is a simple drill that trains all 3 at the same time.
Chose a sloping putt on the practice putting green. Set up a training station as seen in this image, with 3 tee pegs to indicate 3 different start lines. Play putts to each of the tees with the relevant slow, medium or firm pace to allow the slope to bring the ball back to the hole. This drill illustrates that there are multiple lines for all sloping putts and teaches you to match the pace to the line. It also trains your eyes to read the slope, hence training all 3 keys putting skills in one drill.

Try to beat your record each time. This can also be done with a practice partner for additional competition.
'DREAM START' GIVES LAWRENCE DREAM WIN IN SUNBET CHALLENGE
Thriston Lawrence cautioned overnight that his three-shot lead going into the final round of the SunBet Challenge Time Square Casino event at Wingate Park Country Club would not be immune to threat, but he did not see any significant challenges on the last day as he cruised to a five-shot victory in the R2 million Sunshine Tour tournament.
And it’s not as if the rest of the field produced mediocre golf either. Lawrence was just once again pure class as he fired a five-under-par 67 to take him to 20-under for the 54 holes.
The exciting 26-year-old Dylan Naidoo matched that 67 to finish second on 15-under-par, with Yurav Premlall third on 13-under after a 71 on the Friday, both making powerful statements as members of the Sunshine Tour’s Papwa Sewgolum Class for historically disadvantaged golfers. Ryan van Velzen, the 2023/24 winner of the Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy, produced the low round of the day, a 66 that took him into a share of fourth place on

Jacques Blaauw, who was tied for second with Premlall after the second round, struggled off the tee on Friday and shot a 73 that left him on 11-under-par, tied for seventh with George Coetzee (70) and Werner Deyzel (70).
Lawrence settled any nerves right from the outset as he birdied the first two holes, and then went out in four-under 31 as he also birdied the fifth and ninth holes. The world number 76 then birdied the 11th and 13thholes to stretch his lead to a mighty seven shots, and he could afford a bogey on the par-three 14th before cruising home with pars.
“It was definitely a dream start, but from the third to the eighth there was a wind change which made it tricky. But I just had to stay composed and hit my numbers. It was a good driving day, everything pretty much went where I wanted,” Lawrence said.
Even though Lawrence has a hunk of professional titles, he said his fourth Sunshine Tour win was still very special, coming in his first competitive round since injuring his back during his fourth-place finish in the Open Championship last month.

Sunshine Tour event since 2019, and I haven’t had a win anywhere since last year, so this is nice. You never know when you’re going to win again, so I am very grateful. I will always support this tour because it gave me my start.

HUGO CLAIMS RECORD 12TH VODACOM ORIGINS TITLE
Jean Hugo added to his already illustrious history in the Vodacom Origins of Golf when he claimed a record 12th victory on the series after beating Jonathan Broomhead by one stroke at the Highland Gate Golf and Trout Estate in August.
The 48-year-old Hugo birdied the par-five 18th hole, thanks to a brilliant chip-shot, for a two-under-par 70 that left him on 13-under-par for the tournament. Broomhead’s fantastic final round of 65, which included nine birdies but a costly double-bogey on the par-four sixth hole, had lifted him to 12-under-par.
Overnight leader Louis de Jager was also on 12-under as he teed off with Hugo on the final hole, but he ended up making double bogey on 16 and then bogey on 18 to finish in a tie for third on 11-under.
Hugo clinched an astonishing 12th victory on the Vodacom Origins of Golf Series, and his 20th Sunshine Tour title overall. And he did so with a third shot on 18 that was a superb chip to a foot from the hole from the right of the green.

“My best putt of the day was on 16 though, where we all struggled. Louis lost his ball and I had to hack out of the rough a couple of times, we were on the clock as well, and I sank a putt for bogey from more than 15 feet. And on 17 I made another clutch putt for par.
“We made it tough for ourselves with those stumbles and there was a bit of pressure. But I’ve been playing well lately, if I could just putt well then my scores
would be even better. I used to be the best putter on tour, but now anything under 30 putts for a round is good. I was bogey-free the first two rounds and my first bogey today was on the ninth, so I was hitting the ball very well,” Hugo, who only had 27 putts on Sunday, said.
De Jager was in hot form on the front nine, going out in three-under, but he bogeyed the par-five 11th and dropped two shots on the 16th, before closing with another bogey, having hit his drive into the left rough.
Between 2006 and 2015, Hugo was probably the hottest golfer on the Sunshine Tour with 16 victories. But this triumph was his first since 2019.

“To have 12 Vodacom Origins of Golf titles and 20 overall on the Sunshine Tour is what I’m most proud of. I got to 17 quite quickly, but then only won again in 2019 and then there was Covid and in 2020 I had a massive ankle operation.
“But I’ve been working hard and it’s nice to see the results. I can now aim to hit a certain shot and pull it off, it’s about technique and trust way more than just relying on talent. I’ve come close to winning these last few years, but I’m just delighted that I didn’t give it away today. As long as you fight out there, you can be happy,” Hugo said.

YOUNG MPUMALANGA GOLFERS TREATED TO PRO TOURNAMENT EXPERIENCE
Aspiring young golfers from the Pilgrim’s Rest region were given a unique opportunity to experience a professional tournament and receive coaching from Sunshine Tour professionals at the recent Vodacom Origins of Golf event held at the Highland Gate Golf and Trout Estate in August.
The Vodacom’s Origins of Golf series is the longest running pro-am series on the Sunshine Tour. Wherever it is played in the country, Vodacom and the Sunshine Tour invite young golfers from the nearest South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) chapter to a golf clinic.
The children were also fortunate to have two professionals from their hometown coaching them.
Twenty-two youngsters between the ages of eight and 17 – many of them from Pilgrim’s Rest Primary School – took to the driving range at Highland Gate on Thursday 15 August to receive coaching from the Sunshine Tour professionals. And it was an experience they’ll never forget.
“I love sport, having played netball, volleyball and soccer, and I love seeing these children do it as well. To take them out of their location and allow them to see nature as beautiful as this – for some of them it is the first time – is wonderful. This is like a dream come true for them, because they have never been to a place like this before, they mostly don’t see things like this,” said Joyce Mabuye, a teacher at the Pilgrim’s Rest Primary School.
“This motivates them to do something good. I am constantly fighting for children to do something in sports because it keeps them away from the streets. So their parents are very supportive of them playing golf.”
The Mashego brothers, Jastice and Austin, are both busy trying to further their own professional golf careers on the Sunshine Tour but were more than happy to give back to youngsters growing up where they did.
“Our father, Obed, was a keen golfer and a member at Pilgrim’s Rest Golf Club, so we took up the game. I was caddying for Jastice in the Vodacom Origins of Golf this week,” said Austin.
“I love assisting Jastice with the coaching. Being out here hitting balls helps to clear the minds of these youngsters.”
For Jastice, it is about providing an opportunity to dream. “Coming from a small town like Pilgrim’s Rest, there is not much opportunity for these kids and they don’t have role models. So now we can let them see what golf is all about. I hope to inspire them, to give them hope. Just travelling here will open their minds a bit.”
The Estate is merely an hour’s drive from Johannesburg, and once on the island, it is uncanny how swiftly the flurry of city-life is forgotten and left behind. and

You have been in the golf industry for a long time now. What made you choose this career as a PGA Professional?
Like most PGA Professionals, my journey started with a love for the game and playing professionally. While only a select few find success on the tour, becoming a PGA Professional allowed me to remain deeply involved in golf and build a fulfilling career beyond playing.
You have always been involved with courses that are down at the coast. Are you enjoying the Highveld, and what are your biggest challenges currently at Centurion Country Club?
The Highveld has been a pleasant surprise. Many aspire to be near the coast, but as life unfolds, opportunities and circumstances can lead you down unexpected paths. There’s always a bigger reason behind these changes, and my experience here has been incredible so far.
Did you ever have a mentor or someone you looked up to?
I have had the privilege of having several mentors within the industry who have guided me through different phases of my career, from my apprenticeship to becoming a qualified professional and beyond.
Describe a typical workday for you at Centurion Country Club?
Centurion has quickly evolved into a busy club with many moving parts. My day usually begins with a check-in with the Greenkeeper to review the golf course conditions. I then ensure that the clubhouse and golf operations are prepared for the day’s events, whether corporate golf days, member activities, or other functions. Once everyone is comfortable with their tasks, I address my specific responsibilities, including emails and strategic planning. The rest of the day is dedicated to
engaging with the management team, offering assistance as needed, and interacting with members and guests.
Has the hospitality industry grown in your opinion over the last 3 years?
There is no doubt that we have seen tremendous growth within the industry, not only in golf participation but also in the corporate and social spaces at clubs.
With consumers being careful about how they spend their money these days, what is your plan to attract people to Centurion Country Club?
While people are mindful of their spending, they are ultimately seeking value. If they perceive greater value in what they are paying for, they are more comfortable with their expenditures. Our strategy is to increase value combined with exceptional service.
In your opinion, what factors contribute to excellent customer service?
Excellent service stems from a genuine effort to care for individuals and meet their needs. This may not come naturally to everyone, but by fostering a service culture and teamwork, customer service will evolve naturally within the team.
Does your position require you to be available on weekends, evenings, and holidays, and if so, does this place demands on your personal life?
It’s all about managing time effectively and having a strong team around you. As a management team, we strive to collectively manage the environment, but there are times when my presence is necessary. Balancing this with spending quality time with my family is important, and I have learned to manage my time more effectively to achieve this.
What are your short- and long-term goals?
Currently, my primary goal is to see the strategic plan for Centurion Country Club come to fruition and be a part of something special as it unfolds.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
My free time revolves around my wife and kids, and participating in whatever activities are happening in their busy lives.
Do you still get time to play some golf?
I don’t play as much as I used to, but I plan to make more time for it and play more regularly.
BURMESTER TO DEFEND INVESTEC
SOUTH AFRICAN OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
Dean Burmester has confirmed that he will defend his Investec South African Open title when this prestigious championship returns to one of its most historic venues of Durban Country Club from 27 February to 2 March 2025.
Burmester claimed an emotional three-stroke victory in this Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned tournament last season, adding his name to an illustrious list of past home champions from Bobby Locke, Gary Player and Ernie Els to Louis Oosthuizen, Branden Grace, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and
Thriston Lawrence.
Lawrence, the 2022 champion, has also confirmed that he will tee it up as part of a strong field of Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour stars chasing the $1.5 million prize money for the 114th Investec South African Open Championship.
The championship is returning to Durban Country Club for the first time since 2010 when Ernie Els won his fifth national Open here.

VAN TONDER WINS GARY AND VIVIENNE PLAYER CHALLENGE
Danie van Tonder’s ability to ignore all the nerves that comes with the pressure of winning and simply trust his attacking instincts once again paid off as he eagled the 18th hole to put himself in a playoff which he then won in the Gary & Vivienne Player Challenge at Kyalami Country Club at the end of August.
Van Tonder, who started the final round four strokes off the lead, first of all chipped in to eagle the 480m par-five closing hole in regulation play to complete a brilliant six-under-par 66 and leap to 14-under-par for the tournament.

When did you realise that turf management was the industry you want to take further?
Coming out of High School I realized I wasn’t good enough to go pro, but I knew I needed to be involved in the game one way or another. I was introduced to the African Turf Academy in Pretoria and immediately fell in love with the idea of turf grass maintenance.
What is the best and worst part of being a golf course superintendent?
The best part is definitely reaping what you sow. Maintaining a golf course is almost immediately visible and the compliments from members and visitors alike is what gives me motivation. I would have to say the worst part is waking up at 4:30 in the morning, but as I’ve learnt, if you’re not a morning person then greenkeeping isn’t for you.
You got into greenkeeping at a young age and have been very fortunate to have Gary Barker, who has been in the industry for a very long time as a mentor, how much has his knowledge helped you?
Yes, I am very grateful to have Gary Barker as my mentor. He is one of the most knowledgeable persons I’ve ever met. He brings with him immense experience as well as an eye for detail, which not everyone can see. He will advise tried and tested methods whereas I will suggest new school ideas and we seem to have a winning formula.
You are at Umdoni Park GC, a coastal course, does the coastal weather influence the maintenance and how?
Obviously all golf courses have their challenges. We are blessed with warm weather that suits our summer grasses. Sometimes we experience high winds which effects our spraying and irrigation. These winds can also blow sand out of our bunkers which we have to monitor closely.
What are your biggest challenges currently at Umdoni Park GC?
One of our biggest challenges at Umdoni Park is keeping our disease on our greens at bay as well as making sure our bunkers stay consistent. The biggest complaint from golfers in general are greens and bunkers.
Does one need different machinery on course for different types of grasses around the country?
Generally no. however, here at Umdoni Park we have a broader leaf of grass which takes more strain on the machine, which is why we’ve opted for rotary cutting units for our fairways and rough and cylindrical units for our tees and greens.
How big a difference does climate and location play in golf course maintenance?
It definitely does play a difference. The Western cape experience winter rains which is why they tend to opt for winter grasses whereas more northern courses experience the opposite. Every new course being built has to take location and climate into account in terms of the grasses they choose. Some grasses are easier to maintain and disease resistant, whereas other grasses harbor disease more easily and grow at a rapid rate.
To what extent does course setup affect slow play, and how do you deal with it?
Course set up does have a part to play in slow play. At Umdoni Park we mostly deal with a North East and a South West wind and being along the coast, every time you play it will be different. As a maintenance team we try and take this factor into account. The average golfer does not enjoy playing directly into 40 kph+ winds so we have to be strategic in terms of tee and pin placements.
Do you think it should be mandatory for each golf courses to close one day per week for maintenance?
I do not think it is completely necessary to close your course one day a week unless the golf course experiences a lot players through the week. It is difficult for a maintenance team to complete certain projects when there is a lot of golfers around. Closing the course could also mean more time for turf recovery, attention to detail and also giving the course staff a break. Sometimes you have to way up other factors like amenities that the golf course provides. Closing one day a week could mean a 15% drop in turnover across the board so you have to determine whether closing the course out ways the clubs profitability.
Do maintenance staff ever come into conflict with golfers and how do you deal with this?
Very seldomly. Sometimes we are faced with a situation where we have to get a certain product down immediately due to weather or other factors. I always let my staff know the severity of the situation. There has to be a mutual respect between golfers and maintenance staff and I can guarantee that whatever the maintenance staff are doing is almost always more important than your social game of golf.
How
important is it for golfers to repair their divots and pitch marks immediately vs only a couple of days or week later?
Repairing pitch marks and filling your divots is part of golf etiquette. We are playing an esteemed sport so we need to keep to that tradition. It also helps tremendously in the recovery of the turf and the overall appearance. A fixed pitch mark will take 3 days to recover. A badly fixed or unrepaired pitch mark will take 14 days.
People always complain about inconsistent bunkers, how difficult is it to maintain consistent bunkers and do you implement general checks and how?
Like I’ve said, bunkers are always in our suggestion box. We implement a system where bunker depths are checked every time we rake bunkers. We also have a system where bunker faces need to be 2 inches and compact, whereas the playing area of the bunker needs to be 5 inches plus. As long as the actual sand you are using is the same throughout, then this system can work along with regular trimming of edges.

AHLERS CLAIMS HIS 12TH SUNSHINE TOUR TITLE AT SUNBET CHALLENGE WILD COAST
Jaco Ahlers showed the experience of a mature golfer and the determination that comes from plenty of hard work as he withstood the threat of the on-fire duo of Shaun Norris and Brandon Stone to claim a one-stroke victory in the SunBet Challenge hosted by the Wild Coast Sun at the end of July.
The 42-year-old held a four-stroke lead going into the final round, but with the weather having turned favourable after two days of strong wind, Norris and Stone launched a ferocious charge for the top of the leaderboard.
Norris, who has won 13 times around the world, produced a tremendous round after an early bogey on the par-four second hole. Thereafter the 2021/22 Sunshine Tour Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy winner reeled off three birdies and an eagle on the front nine and collected another six birdies on the back nine. Norris played the stretch of holes from the seventh to the 12th in six-under-par, and he needed a birdie at the last to shoot 59.

Umkomaas golf course was first constructed, as a 9-hole layout, in 1913 but was expanded to 18 holes in 1926. In 1932 reknown course designer Robert "Bob" Grimsdell re-designed the course, capitalising on the natural contours of the land and taking advantage of the glorious sea views - in fact, most holes offer great views of the warm Indian ocean. Stone, meanwhile, produced a superb, bogey-free seven-under-par 63 to finish on 12-under for the tournament, just failing to add to his five professional titles.
When Ahlers double-bogeyed the par-four ninth and then dropped another shot on the par-three 13th, he slipped to 11-under, tied with Norris and with Stone charging. But the now 12-time winner overcame a tough day for him by knuckling down when it really mattered and birdied the par-four 15th and then the par-five 16th, before finishing with two pars.
Having seen what Norris had done when he teed off on the 10th, Ahlers then saw Stone’s score on the 15th. He responded with a drive that left him with an ideal number to hit a
sand-wedge at the flag, hit it close and then holed the putt.
On 16 he hit an even better tee-shot, describing it as the most crucial shot of his round, leaving him with an easy iron into the green and a birdie.
While Ahlers’ two-putt for par and victory on the 18th may have looked devoid of drama, he said he still felt like he had a mountain to climb on the last hole.
“There’s always drama on 18! But I hit a good shot and then hit a wedge away from the flag, for a reasonable two-putt for par. It may have looked drama-less, but there’s always those thoughts in your head,” Ahlers said.
But the Centurion resident silenced those negative thoughts in impressive fashion, signing for a final-round 69 for 13-under-par.

RISING SA STAR VAN VELZEN TO MAKE NEDBANK GOLF CHALLENGE DEBUT
Ryan van Velzen will make his debut in the DP World Tour’s Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City from December 5-8, 2024, as the face of a new generation of young South African professionals seeking to make their mark in ‘Africa’s Major’.
Van Velzen secured his place in a stellar international field for this year’s Nedbank Golf Challenge, in honour of Gary Player, thanks to a groundbreaking performance on the Sunshine Tour last season which saw him crowned the winner of the overall Order of Merit delivered by The Courier Guy.
The 22-year-old will join compatriots Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Erik van Rooyen as well as defending champion Max Homa
from America amongst the early stars announced for this year’s tournament, in partnership with Nedbank and Sun International. The US$6million tournament is part of the DP World Tour’s Opening Swing, which will be the first of five Global Swings on the 2025 Race to Dubai.
“It’s a privilege to have qualified to play in the Nedbank Golf Challenge and to be there with the best players in the world. I’ve been to the Nedbank Golf Challenge a few times with my dad and friends and I watched Lee Westwood and Tommy Fleetwood win it,” said Van Velzen.

On 9 August 2024, South Africa celebrated National Women’s Day, and the day has been set aside on our calendar, to commemorate the famous women’s march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria on 9 August 1956. Additionally, this year’s Women’s Month commemoration theme is “Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development”, and celebrates women as active agents of change and social transformation. The commemoration also allows us to reflect, and take stock of achievements and the challenges that remain, while mobilising further support for the further development of women.
In terms of golf there is a need to acknowledge women’s accomplishments, as well as the leadership role and huge contribution women make in the areas of management and administration of golf at national, provincial and club level, all women golfers, whether they are professionals or amateurs, and last, but not least, all the women involved in the turf grass and green industries.
In terms of mobilising support for the further development of women in golf, the amalgamation of women’s golf into the other golfing associations to establish GOLFRSA, as a non-profit company to operate as the national sporting organisation of amateur golf in the Republic, has been a huge step in breaking through the “glass ceiling” for women to take up more leadership roles in golf in South Africa.
Furthermore, the Department of Sport and
Recreation has also added to the importance of the role of women in sport.
In April 2023, the Department of Sport published the draft Women in Sport Policy, wherein are outlined a set of measures that will promote and support women in sport, and help to ensure programmes are in place to address gender disparities in sporting codes and structures.
The draft also addresses barriers to entry by women in sport, such as lack of funding, sponsorship and inadequate remuneration.
A cabinet press release stated; “The proposed policy intends to promote increased active participation of women in sport and leadership roles such as coaching and officiating. It also seeks to promote equity and ensure women receive respect or recognition on the professional front, including equal remuneration as their male counterparts.”
This is a call to action; at your next meeting why not place the issue of sustainability of golf and its three pillars namely environmental sustainability, social responsibility and good governance on your agenda, focusing on the principles that underpin celebrating Women’s Month, including, women as active agents of change and social transformation, taking stock of achievements, and the challenges that remain, while mobilising support for the further development of women.

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK WHO is the Golfer from the past?
• Our mystery golfer was born in Naugatuck, Connecticut on December 14, 1902, and passed away in Clearwater, Florida on April 19, 1972.
• He was of Lithuanian descent.
• As a teenager, an accident took off the ring finger on his left hand, plus part of his left pinkie. After that, he had to rebuild his golf grip to work for him despite those missing fingers.
• His greatest season was 1931, when he won the U.S. Open, reached the semi-finals of the PGA Championship, and won four events on the professional circuit. He also made the first of two appearances on Team USA in the Ryder Cup winning both matches he played.
• His U.S. Open win came in a marathon playoff. He and George Von Elm were tied at 292 (8-over-par) after regulation play. They played a 36-hole playoff the next day and tied again at 149 (7-over-par). The following day they played 36 more holes and Burke emerged victorious 148 to 149.
• He was inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame in 1966

SUNSHINE TOUR TO HOST TWO EVENTS ON DP WORLD TOUR’S OPENING SWING
The Sunshine Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Championship and AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open will form part of a strong Opening Swing on the DP World Tour when it tees off its new season on southern hemisphere fairways this December.
In announcing the five-tournament Opening Swing, the DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour confirmed that the Alfred Dunhill Championship and AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open will be the final two events of the Swing, which is another powerful example of the global pathway of opportunity that exists on the Sunshine Tour.
The Opening Swing is one of five Global Swings on the 2025 Race to Dubai, with each Swing rewarding its individual champion with exemptions into some of the biggest tournaments on the Tour as well as extra prize money incentives.

The Sunshine Tour will announce the remainder of its summer co-sanctioned tournaments in due course.
