through my designs, i seek to create interior experiences using color, texture, natural light, and architectural elements. i believe that great design is created through the collaboration of architecture and interior design; they are not mutually exclusive. great exteriors are achieved through thoughtful and functional interior spaces and vice versa. i want to create sustainable interior spaces where nature is the inspiration for human focused design. when designs are based on natural ideas, both humans and the earth experience increased benefit and value from one another.

located in the vibrant business district of tokyo, japan, the shinjuku grand art hotel displays the convergence of luxury with artistic modernism. angled walls combined with expansive facades allow guests to experience the changing light and shadows that occur in the city between sunrise and sunset. asymmetrical balance and wabi sabi design principles lend to the traditional japanese cultural aesthetic. bright pops of color and clean, intentional lines reflect the contemporary art culture and introduce form and movement throughout the spaces. unobstructed floor to ceiling curtain walls force the circulation to the exterior, allowing guests to experience the dynamic japanese lifestyle. the juxtaposition of serene natural elements and textures with the large bold art pieces and oversized sculptural forms creates an environment that is both stimulating and calming. this modern art hotel provides a sophisticated yet exciting stay for any guest. 8

the japanese tea ceremony and the spaces designed to support the culture of tea have a long history of forms, rituals, and aesthetic attitudes “steeped” in nature, art, mind, body, and emotion. the purpose of tea ceremony is thoughtful engagement of the five senses, and every aspect of this tea house is designed to enhance sensual awareness. surrounded by hardwoods, this secluded refuge embodies the idea of relaxation and meditation while becoming a part of nature itself. the minimal design of the tea house allows the members partaking in the tea ceremony to focus their thoughts on nature in lieu of materiality.

ode to the sunflower mimicking the petals of the sunflower, the panels provide a haze of diffused sunlight over a open green space.

second floor

courtyard first floor the sunflower head follows the daily sun path through a complex growth mechanism within the stem. windows with operable solar louvers translate this property into the space. the sun path is experienced by transitional changes in the amount of daylight available in the space.

22

solar path

interior pathway

this conceptual project focuses on translating the biomorphic and physical properties of the sunflower into spatial experiences. this abstract design’s overall shape emerged from the idea of the seed, the life cycle of the seed, and the idea of birth and death. through this concept, the beginning and the end are one in the same. additionally, the path of the sun and it’s intimate relationship with the sunflower as well as the water purification abilities of the sunflower were examined.

water purification pipes

spiral staircase

geodesic dome

the sunflower has the ability to cleanse water of toxic chemicals. rain water is collected in the lower basin. steel pipes represent the height and sheer strength of the stem. manual hand pumps in the upper basin, used to bring the water up for filtration, engage the user in the physical process of purification.
