Creating dog and cat centric facilities will not only reduce the stress and improve the welfare of the animals, but it will increase the likelihood that healing will take place for sick animals and that permanent homes will be found for those in the shelter.

The over arching idea for this project was to design not only the interior of a space to conform to a set of rules written by humans, but to design a new space for animals where both the interior and exterior are products of each other, and their relationship is intertwined with the use of the landscape so that each area is thoughtfully conceived and implemented in a deliberate manner.
The circulation of the animal hospital is a necessity for safety protocol and ease of visibility, mobility, and also disease mitigation. Short, direct passageways are the most economical and safest approach to effective and timely medical care
TREATMENT AREA LOOKING TOWARDS DOG RUNS
The intent was to design not from merely the viewpoint of the human that occupies and uses the space, but mainly to incorporate the perspective that an animal might have as they are visiting, living in, or being treated in these spaces. This project seeks to completely integrate the visions of both parties that will be occupying the space, an innovative design idea that if successfully executed, will maintain better emotional and physical wellbeing of all living things within the building.

The cat pods composed of 3 cubes each give individual cats ample room for sleeping, eating, playing, vertical stretching, and using the litter box without one area overlapping into another. Frosted glass hides the litter boxes and allows for some privacy, while clear
MULTI-CAT
Dutch doors are present on the indoor dog runs with frosted green glass on the bottom and clear glass on the top. This allows visitors and staff visual access to dogs at all times while keeping noise levels lower in the kennel since dogs bark when they see other dogs. Small dogs are also safer because they can’t squeeze under these doors like they can under higher fences. A hole in the bottom door is provided so the dog may smell the visitor before they enter, and selffilling raised water dishes are provided to reduce waste and keep the dog and their run cleaner.

As the highlight of the shelter, the multi-cat home and play area is completely encased in glass allowing for daylight and visual access to all visitors. A glass hallway that surrounds the rooms acts as a simple pathway for visitors to view the cats without interacting physically. Glass boxes extend out from the walls allowing cats to view the humans from different vantage points. The actual rooms are lined with wood boards at various elevations and with various width cut-outs. These boards allow for maximum

TREATMENT
Indoor/outdoor dog runs allow the dogs to be outside or inside depending on their wants. A doggy door divides the two spaces, giving full autonomy to the animal: grass and daylight or air conditioning and fresh water. With both spaces accessible to visitors, adoption won’t be hindered, and the animals will be happier. The orientation of the outdoor runs reduces visual access to other dogs and stress levels. It also allows for maximum southern sun exposure.

Puppy housing rooms are important and safer in that the dens are specifically designed for adolescent dogs. Housing up to three puppies from a single litter, they keep noise and stress levels down by restricting visual access of the puppies.

Outdoor access for both cats and dogs is an important feature of this hospital and shelter. Exterior stimulation, daylight, and natural ventilation all keep animals healthy and happy. The public park area also fosters increased community involvement.
