Digital Drawing and Illustration
EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAM
Session 2, #1157, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 3, #1165, M-F, 9-12, In-Person Begin with traditional media and processes and then translate your ideas digitally in programs such as Procreate. Presentations will feature work by contemporary illustrators who are pushing the field of illustration forward using new approaches to mark-making.

Session 1, #1152, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 2, #1156, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 3, #1160, M-F, 1–4, Online Session 4, #1171, M-F, 1-4, In-Person Express yourself through drawing and learn a variety of techniques and approaches to build your technical, spatial, and creative abilities. Working with a range of materials, investigate contemporary subjects and themes through skills such as line, perspective, tone, proportion, composition, value, gesture, and contour. All levels are welcome.
Session 1: June 24-28 | Session 2: July 8-12 | Session 3: July 15-26 | Session 4: July 29-August 9
ANIMATION AND VIDEO Animation Studio Session 3, #1164, M-F, 9-12, In-Person Explore traditional and digital animation techniques, such as frame-by-frame, stop-motion, and more. Students complete several projects that focus on communicating ideas through motion studies, character/environment development, storytelling, and other cinematic devices such as composition, set creation, and props.
Figure Drawing Session 3, #1159, M-F, 1-4, In-Person Session 4, #1169, M-F, 1-4, In-Person Working from the nude model, you will learn to draw the human form from direct observation and gain skills in representing proportion, volume, composition, gesture, and the accurate and expressive use of line and tone.
Moving Images: Video Production Session 3, #1163, M-F, 1-4, In-Person This course serves as a foundation for students interested in video production, motion graphics, and animation. Students may work with traditional processes such as sketchbooking alongside digital applications such as Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere.
ARCHITECTURE Architecture: Design & Drawing Session 4, #1168, M-F, 1-4, Online Learn basic architectural drawing, perspective, drafting techniques, and 3D modeling. You will create a final piece that may include prints and drawings, 3D physical models, and much more. No experience is necessary.
DRAWING AND ILLUSTRATION Comics and Graphic Novels Session 4, #1170, M-F, 1-4, In-Person Learn how to tell engaging stories and investigate character development, plot structure, scripting, and storyboarding. Explore penciling, inking, coloring, space, and perspective through a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional media, including colored pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, and handmade zines. All levels are welcome.

FASHION Fashion Construction Session 3, #1162, M-F, 1-4, In-Person Session 4, #1172, M-F, 1-4, In-Person You will be designing, constructing, and sewing your own garments from start to finish utilizing a wide variety of materials such as paper, muslin, secondhand clothing, and fabric off the bolt. No experience is necessary.
Fashion Design Session 1, #1153, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 4, #1173, M-F, 9-12, In-Person Develop skills in illustrating the fashion figure, styling, draping, and fabric selection; explore the history of fashion design; investigate contemporary designers and design practices. Create unique textile and garment designs and learn about clothing as a language. All levels are welcome.
Fashion Illustration Session 3, #1161, M-F, 9-12, In-Person Develop drawing skills and fashion illustration techniques with an emphasis on individual style and expression, inspired by live and clothed models and garments from SAIC’s Fashion Resource Center. Previous drawing experience is helpful but not necessary.

INTERDISCIPLINARY Artist Materials and Techniques
PAINTING
Session 1, #1154, M-F, 9-4, In-Person This course is designed for students who want to explore contemporary art materials and techniques. Students are exposed to what is happening right now in the art world. They experiment with various methods, which may include drawing, sculpture, image transfer, collage, laser cutting, and/or 3D printing. The course starts with several smaller exercises and demos combined with discussion to help students develop a larger final project that reflects their individual interests.
From Drawing to Painting Session 1, #1155, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Session 4, #1175, M-F, 9-12, In-Person Transition from drawing to acquiring painting skills such as line, volume, space, materiality, form and function, and palette using a variety of traditional and contemporary materials. This course is recommended for both beginners and those wanting to improve and develop their current abilities.
Oil Painting Session 3, #1166, M-F, 1-4, In-Person Session 4, #1174, M-F, 9-12, In-Person Learn to stretch a canvas, lay out a palette, and explore paint application techniques and color mixing. Develop color theory, composition, structure, proportion, and perspective skills through observational painting, as well as through exercises that encourage you to find your own direction and style.
Water-Based Painting Session 2, #1158, M-F, 9-4, In-Person Explore traditional and nontraditional materials and methods used in water-based painting. Working from a variety of subjects, you may use ink, acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media while building skills in color, tone, volume, contrast, and temperature.
SCULPTURE Eco Sculpture: Social Practice Art Studio This course is designed in partnership with Knowledge Lab, the SAIC sculpture department’s “living laboratory” with an innovative, green, and sustainable focus.

Session 3, #1167, M-F, 1-4, In-Person This course guides students through the process of creating ecologically engaged art in a variety of media, from initial inspiration, artistic research, material exploration, construction, and installation/presentation. Emphasis will be placed on working with and responding to the natural world, with the SAIC Sculpture Department’s Knowledge Lab as our base. Plant tending and harvesting in the K-Lab Garden, foraging walks around downtown, and trips to nearby art and ecological spaces will provide inspiration.

Registration Register online at continuingstudies.saic.edu. Call 312.629.6170 or email cs@saic.edu if you have any questions about online registration. All students in grades 9–12 may register for noncredit. Students who have completed their sophomore year have the option of enrolling for one college credit per course.
Tuition Audit (noncredit) course: $600 1.0 college credit (student must have completed their sophomore year): $1,785 Tuition does not include supplies. Students provide their own supplies and will receive a material list on the first day of class. Supplies vary by class and can range from $50–$200.
Refund Policy 100 percent tuition refund will be issued if courses are cancelled at least one week prior to the session start date. No refunds will be issued after this date. All requests to drop a course must be submitted in writing to cs@saic.edu and include the student’s name, ID number, and course information. Refunds take four to six weeks to process. Refunds will not be issued if a course delivery format changes from in-person to online due to health guidelines.
Financial Assistance Financial assistance is available in the form of limited need-based aid and scholarships where need is not a requirement. Visit saic.edu/ecpfinancialaid for more information and how to apply.
ECP Chicago Youth Artist Scholarship Founded in 2012, the ECP Chicago Youth Artist Educational Scholarship will benefit Chicago Public Schools high school students enrolled in the Early College Program. The scholarship will cover 100 percent tuition for a fall, spring, or summer class. Applicants must submit the ECP registration form and CYA application form which can be found at saic.edu/cya.
Grace and Walter Byron Smith Scholarship The Smith Scholarship covers 100 percent of tuition for any non-credit (audit) ECP course taken in fall, spring, or summer, and is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to students living in Illinois. Applicants must submit the ECP registration form and Smith application form which can be found at saic.edu/smith.
