Info-graphics or rather information vizulation has and is becoming more so used as an industry standard tool in the representation of data. With the rapid development and impact of the internet in addition to data becoming more so readily available to the general public, rather than just an elite few many graphic designers and enthusiast have taken it upon themselves to represent data almost
about absolutely anything in very new and unique ways. There are also many websites and well published books that are dedicated to the display of such graphics. It has become quite a phenonomen as the examples above (including my own) care to show.

8 house//BIG Commissioned by St. Frederikslund and Hopfner Ltd. in 2006, the 8 House, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) was their joint third instalment of multi-housing to the developing Ă˜restad, Denmark city area. It can be suspected that this successful relationship between the architect and the developers started in 1999 with construc-
tion of the first instalment (VM House) carried out between 2004-2005. I will apply the principles of the RIBA stages to different parts of this project. The following Information is applicable for the 8 House (2010) project:
9
PREPARATION Stage A, Appraisal
it is likely that feasibility studies suggested a figure around this value as the projects budget.
Clients Needs: create 500 dwellings and 400 workspaces. a new house or rather two new house: a gigantic block and a small tower*
Collaborators, clients and partners involved in this project include: Hopfner Ltd. St. Frederikslund Holding MOE & Brodsgaard KLAR
Being that Per Hopfner had previously completed two housing projects with BIG it was easier for him to make the decision to proceed and go on to select the procurement method. The projects final cost totalled to â‚Ź92,000,000 therefore
10
By this point the contract and brief have started development.
Stage B, Design Brief Here Hopfner and St. Frederikslund and any additional partners and contributors commit to a binding contract alongside BIG, whom then start to finalise, a detailed brief. Site conditions are also analysed, for example: project area (61,000sqm) ground conditions weather conditions Partnering team members are also now included within the project and contract.
TEAM: Partner-In-Charge: Bjarke Ingels, Thomas Christoffersen Project Leader: Ole Elkjaer-Larsen, Henrick Poulsen Project Team: Dennis Rasmussen, Rune Hansen, Agustin Perez Torres, Annette Jensen, Carolien Schippers, Caroline Vogelius Wiener, Claus Tversted, David Duffus, Hans Larsen, Jan Magasanik, Anders Nissen, Christian Alvarez Gomez, Hjalti Gestsson, Johan Cool, James Duggan Schrader, Jakob Lange, Kirstine Ragnhild, Jakob Monefeldt, Jeppe Marling Kiib, Joost Van Nes, Kasia Brzusnian, Kasper Broendum Larsen, Louise Heboell, Maria Sole Bravo, Ole Nannberg, Pablo Labra, Pernille Uglvig Jessen, Peter Rieff, Peter Voigt Albertsen, Peter Larsson, Rasmus Kragh Bjerregaard, Richard Howis, Soeren Lambertsen, Eduardo Perez, Ondrej Tichy, Sara Sosio, Karsten Hammer Hansen, Christer Nesvik, Soeren Peter Kristensen, Lacin Karaoz, Marcello Cova, Luis Felipe González Delgado, Janghee Yoo, SunMing Lee
Usually at this point proposal sketches are also made. In the case of BIG it is uncertain as of if their diagrammatical initiations and animations can be considered as proposal sketches. However the presentation video in addition to BIG’s acclaimed monograph ‘Yes Is More (2009) shows BIG propose to design the block housing in layer cake like system rather than a simulation of different housing next to each other. This can arguably be seen as the sketch which progressed into the the concept. It is also likely that at the early parts of this stage, a Gantt-time chart is made to ensure a schedule of progress.
DESIGN Stage C, Concept
Block vertex has been pushed down to ‘open up the south-western courtyard and it’s apartments’
This stage gives Hopfner, St. Frederikslund and additional parties the chance to evaluate the brief that has been further developed by BIG, in a matter to finalise for the following stages.
Furthermore plans and sections begin to take development at this point. Here we are presented with plans that are at a scale of 1:500 and sections at a scale of 1:200.
This part also sees the form and architectural qualities of the building take shape, with the elements of the concept taking form as of the what the site and the brief has called for. The images upon the previous page show how certain aspects of the site context have informed the design.
The Brief should not be modified substantially after this point. Depending on the procurement route, changes after this stage can incur additional cost or lengthen the programme.
11
Stage D, Development of Ideas At this point, construction professionals from other disciplines become more apparent, such as the project quantity surveyor (QS), the engineers (which in this case was MOE & Brodsgaard), the partnering architects (KLAR). These groups are now all vital as a conglomerate to ensure that the constructional possibilities of the designs, drawings and concepts can be fulfilled. The development of the brief is also at its final stage.
12
Completed drawings are also seen and approved by a senior figure within the architecture team within this stage. It is likely to be Bjarke Ingels or the subsequent partner-in-charge Thomas Christoffersen. Stage D also brings about the application for planning permission
which can more often than not be one of the most difficult process in projects, as this would leave the architect and the client under the scrutiny of the local authority, whom decline or approve the application for full development control. The 8 House doesn’t portray signs of much difficulty within this area, especially considering the fact that Ørestad is a developing city, with a lot of open land and has been described as a “function as a testing ground for new ideas”. Furthermore with BIG successfully completing other projects within the city, signs of difficulty in the application process are difficult to see. Amager which is very close by, is a protected area, and is addressed by BIG.
Stage E, Technical Design At this point all parties which have so far been addressed are involved, as this includes preparation of technical design(s) and specifications, sufficient to co-ordinate components and elements of the project and information for statutory standards and construction safety. The following below displays the detail drawings of 8 House. Furthermore completion of the brief with decisions made on the planning arrangement, appearance, construction method, outline specification and cost of the project. Here the quantity surveyor plays a vital role as even the calculation of the apparatus and the man-labour used in construction has to be calculated.
All approvals will be obtained at this stage, including for Building Regulations. In effect, during this Stage final proposals are developed for the Project sufficient for co-ordination of all its components and elements to realise the construction. Full design of every part and component of the building by collaboration of all concerned. Complete cost checking of designs.
As the 8 House is not a UK based project I will, and tender documents are as such that you cannot easily access them online I will now outline general descriptions of these particular Stages, only showing images where I can.
13
PRE-CONSTRUCTION Stage F, Production Information F1 Preparation of production information in sufficient detail to enable a tender or tenders to be obtained.
Prepare and collate tender documentation in sufficient detail to enable a tender or tenders to be obtained for the construction of the Project. It should be noted that this Stage is much more relevant to Traditional forms of procurement.
F2 Application for statutory approvals. Preparation of further information for construction required under the building contract.
Prepare Bills of Quantities and tender documents.
Final decisions taken on every matter related to design, specification, construction and cost. For a traditional procurement process, production information is first prepared in sufficient detail to enable a tender or tenders to be obtained. Any further production information required under the building contract to complete the information for construction is then prepared. All statutory approvals should be obtained by the end of this phase. Prepare final production information i.e. drawings, schedules and specifications. At this point those involved include the architects, engineers, specialists and if appointed at this point the contractor.
14
Stage G, Tender Documentation
Again at this point those involved include the architects, engineers, specialists and if appointed at this point the contractor.
Stage H, Tender Action Identification and evaluation of potential contractors and/or specialists for the project. Obtaining and appraising tenders; submission of recommendations to the client. Tenders obtained and appraised with recommendations made to the client body or Steering Group to allow an appointment to be made. It is important that the contractors’ understanding of, and commitment to, the project vision and its sustainability is tested at this stage. This can be achieved by the inclusion of this as a key selection criterion early in the procurement process.
CONSTRUCTION Stage J, Mobilisation
lowing image.
At this stage the following must be carried out:
USE Stage L, Post Practical Completion
Letting the building contract, appointing the contractor. Issuing of information to the contractor. Arranging site hand over to the contractor. Take action in accordance with the RIBA Plan of Work
L1 Administration of the building contract after Practical Completion and making final inspections.
At this point the sub-contractors are introduced to the project, which involves the individuals who carrying out the physical labour in the construction of the works Stage K, Construction to Practical Completion Contractor programmes the work in accordance with the contract and commences work on site. The client or their representative - the architect in Traditional procurement - administers the building contract up to and including practical completion (this is the point at which the contractor hands back ownership of the site and completed project to the client). Further information supplied to the contractor as and when reasonably required. Take action in accordance with the RIBA Plan of Work and regular site inspections of work to ensure it meets specification. The example of this is shown in the above/fol-
L2 Assisting building user during initial occupation period. L3 Review of project performance in use. At this Stage, the building has been handed over to the client for occupation. Any defects will have been remedied and the final account settled. This allows the management, construction and performance of the project to be assessed. Analyse job records and inspect completed building(s) as appropriate. Conduct studies of the building in use. These are particularly important to focus on energy in use against the design specification. This is much of the information that also becomes available to publications.

"Sai Wentum was born in London in 1990. He is currently in his final year of his BA (Hons) Architecture, undergraduate degree at the Canterbury School of Architecture. Although studying architecture, Wentum's background of graphic and product design, heavily influence his architectural work, believing that it is important for these three design disciplines to be in sync. Often Sai collaborates alongside Laith Wallace and Dean Jackson in their soon to be established group Pixeloute Design StudioŠ, where they produce a high calibre of work within the areas of graphics, illustration, photography, web design and motion graphics. Wentum is based in both London and Canterbury."
