I hope all families had a special Christmas celebration and a relaxing holiday break. I trust that all students have returned ready to make the most of the opportunities that will be available throughout this year. On behalf of the College community, I especially extend a warm welcome to new students and their families. I am very pleased to especially welcome our 225 Year 7 students and their families who join the St Ignatius community this year. Also, I welcome the 12 new students and their families who join us from other schools in Years 8 - 12 this year. I look forward to a long and happy association over the coming years. We have commenced the year with 1,210 students, and I wish them all a very rewarding year ahead. The new school year provides a fresh start and with this the opportunity for our students to reset their course to enhance their learning and personal outcomes.
The 2015 Semester Reports, subsequent discussions with parents/guardians and subsequent personal reflection would have provided a strong basis for students to resolve where they need to and how they can take better advantage of all the opportunities available to them through our College. I have high expectations for our students and in particular, through their diligent application to their studies they will achieve solid gains in their level of learning and development again this year. I want to encourage a culture where students feel obligated and supported to high achievements. I ask that parents/guardians proactively help their daughter/son settle into good routines, set boundaries that support the priority that should be placed on school and monitor progress. Overall, when looking back on the school’s achievements last year, I think we can be very satisfied, however, I do not want to “rest on one’s laurels.” In my first address to staff for the year I encouraged them to have high expectations for our students and through their professional conversations to continually strive for improvement in their practice. One of the mantras I am using is, “From Good to Great.” ....continued on Page 2

Welcome to the following returning staff: Mr Brad Manczak Returning from Parental Leave
Ms Bek Spencer Returning from Maternity Leave
I am also pleased to inform you that Mr Joe Pannuzzo, a very experienced teacher, will replace Ms Wood as the Year 7 Claver Homeroom Teacher. I remind Year 7 Parents about this evening’s Year 7 Parent Welcome Mass and Information Night. This will provide a valuable opportunity to meet Ms Wood, the Year 7 Homeroom Teachers and our new Deputy Principal (Students), Mr Michael Timms.
Sympathy In recent weeks, some of our school community members have suffered bereavements. On behalf of our school community, I express our sympathy to the following who have lost loved ones.
Ms Isje Timmins Returning from Maternity Leave
The Dumaresq family on the loss of Gerard, father of Jack (Year 10) and Ella (Year 7). Mr Ashley Latchford (Teacher) on the loss of his brother Peter.
Ms Julie Wilson Returning from Maternity Leave
Ms Kymberley Naylor (Teacher) on the loss of her niece, Neisha McLean. Ms Rebekah Spencer (Teacher) on loss of her Aunty, Jean Milsome. Please keep these people in your thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.
First College Assembly I wrote to all Year 7 parents earlier in the week about a change to who would be the Year 7 Coordinator for 2016 and a consequential change of Year 7 Claver Homeroom Teacher. Unfortunately, Ms Allison Carlon is unable to return to work due to slower than expected recovery from a medical condition. Ms Carlon is very disappointed as she was looking forward to leading the Year 7 team of teachers and support staff to introduce another new group of students to their secondary schooling. I am sure you join with me in wishing Ms Carlon a full recovery as soon as possible. I am very pleased, and relieved, that a very experienced teacher, Ms Tory Wood, can replace Ms Carlon in this role for 2016. Ms Wood has held a number of leadership positions in the past including Head of Years 7 and 8 and I am confident she will provide excellent leadership and management of our Year 7 area. Ms Wood was allocated the role of Year 7 Homeroom Teacher before we were aware a change was needed.
Tomorrow the full school will gather for the Commencement Assembly at which we formally welcome our new students and staff members. At this assembly, we traditionally welcome back the Year 12 student high achievers from last year to congratulate them on their significant achievements. We also acknowledge in this way the efforts of all the 2015 VCE and VCAL students who achieved their personal goals. I am sure that you will join with us in extending sincere congratulations to the Class of 2015. Their results are a testament to their dedication and commitment to achieve their best. In a community where quality teaching and learning is valued, these results make us very proud of our young women and men and create in us a confidence in their future. Parents are most welcome to attend the assembly. It commences at 9.00am and will conclude at about 10.30am. Please report to the front office on arrival.
In early December last year School Captain, Noah Hodgson and ViceCaptains, Lucy Simmons and Greg Lewis attended the National Jesuit and Jesuit Partner Schools Student Leaders Conference that was hosted by Xavier Catholic College, Hervey Bay. One outcome of this conference will be the choice of our College theme for 2016 by our College Student Leaders. They will announce the theme at the assembly tomorrow.
Swimming Carnival Mr Andrew Philp (Sport Coordinator) has advertised, with more details, the annual Saint Ignatius College Geelong Swimming Carnival to be held on Thursday 11th February 2016 later in this newsletter. All Year 7 - 12 students are required to attend. Can I please reinforce the requirement that all students attend with the intention of participating if they can? Whole school events like this one are important and as a college we have a clear expectation that all students take an appropriately full and active part in our co-curricular provisions. It is my hope that as many students as appropriate (some for obvious reasons will not be able to swim) will be actively and enthusiastically involved, particularly with the community’s current emphasis on promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. I want to promote in our school culture a positive and enthusiastic participation in such events by our students. I was very pleased with the level of participation in last year’s carnival and look forward to a very successful event again this year. Parents are most welcome to attend. Please sign the Parent Consent Form located in the rear of the Student Planner. Homeroom Teachers will check this as it is a requirement before students can attend.
Beginning of Year Masses This year we will again celebrate three Beginning of Year Masses, they will be on Friday 19th February 2016 as follows: 9.00am 11.00am 1.30pm
Year 8 and 10 Year 9 and 11 Year 7 and 12

Please note that unlike previous years the only studnet leaders who will receive their badges at the Mass will be the College Captains, Vice-Captains and other senior Captains. All other Student leaders will receive their badges at the Whole School Assembly scheduled for Term 2. All parents and friends in the Saint Ignatius College community are cordially invited to attend the masses. There will be morning tea, light lunch or afternoon tea provided afterwards for parents.
Parent Information Evenings Please note that there will be Parent Information Evenings early in the year as follows. Parent Information Evenings Term 1 Year 7 8 9 10 11 12
Day & Date Thurs 4th February Mon 8th February Mon 15th February Mon 8th February Mon 22th February Mon 15th February
Time 7.00pm 7.00pm 7.00pm 7.00pm 7.00pm 7.00pm
I encourage you to attend and in particular take this opportunity to meet staff, meet other parents, view classrooms and find out about our programs, procedures and how you can support the school’s contribution to your sons / daughter’s learning. Students are welcome to attend.
Casual Bus Travel All students wishing to travel on any bus that is not their usual means of travel to and from the College must provide our office with a note from their Parent/ Guardian giving permission for the travel at least 48 hours before the intended time of travel. If application is approved a bus pass will be given to the student to give to the bus driver. A pass will not be issued if the required bus is full, so other arrangements will have to be made. Please note that most buses at this stage are full. Late requests will not be processed.
Picking up and Dropping Off Children around schools For the safety of students, parents are reminded to take care and obey parking signs and observe the Road Rules when picking up or dropping off students around schools.
Council’s Parking & Information Officers monitor all supervised school crossings on a regular roster and issue infringements to drivers who stop in unsafe areas, such as ‘No Stopping’ zones, within 20 meters of a school crossing, parallel to a yellow edged line, or if double parked even for a moment to drop off or collect a student.
In times of severe weather or a prolonged search, students and staff may be moved to a re-location site.
Queuing to enter a pick up/drop off zone leads to traffic congestion and vehicles being stationary in prohibited areas.
I would like to reinforce that our number one priority is always the safety of our students and staff.
Remember, as soon as you stop to let your student in or out of the car, you are deemed to be parked.
We will continue to take this matter seriously. So in the current environment of high alert and perhaps even alarm among some, it is obviously also very important that we practice our emergency management plans.
You do not have to leave your car or turn the engine off to be fined, so please ensure you are parked in a legal parking area. At children’s crossings, you must remain stationary at the stop line while any person (including an adult or the supervisor) is on the crossing or the stop sign is displayed. Do not let your child alight from the vehicle at this time, and ensure that they wait until you are safely and legally parked. If you breach a parking regulation or Road Rule the Parking & Information Officer assigned to monitor the crossing will usually record your registration number and details, and the Penalty Infringement Notice will be posted to you in due course.
Emergency Management Plan As you would be aware from media reports, a number of Victorian schools have received serious and threatening phone calls since the start of the school year. Schools in other states across Australia have also received similar calls. The Catholic Education Commission of Victoria has contacted all Catholic schools to provide information and support in relation to this matter. Whilst the Victorian Department of Education website informs that all of the calls so far have been hoaxes, our College, and I expect like all schools, are taking these calls seriously and will enact our emergency management plan upon receiving a call, which includes contacting 000.
Our goal is to operate as normal and parents and carers should assume we would be open unless informed otherwise by my delegate or me.
We routinely practice evacuation and lock-down during each year. We will carry out the evacuation and lock-down practices very soon. This will ensure that our students and staff can calmly respond to emergencies, if required. I feel for the school communities that have been directly affected by these events and understand the level of concern this creates in the community, and the anxiety that it can cause. I wish them all the best as they work to recover and settle back into normal routines after a disrupted start to the new year. Finally, thank you to all parents and carers in anticipation of your support in the face of these potentially disruptive and frustrating threats. I encourage you to please discuss this matter with your daughter/son as another way she/he can be reassured about our risk management. Best wishes for 2016,
Michael Exton Principal
In the event of the need to evacuate, students will be evacuated to the school oval under the supervision of their teacher. The roll would then be taken. Students and Staff would then wait on the oval until the all-clear signal is given.

Two men in a silver Ford are being hunted over the firey Western Ring Road crash that killed ute driver Mr Churchill and passenger Ivana Clonaridis. Police belive those in the Ford sedan ‘baited’ drivers along the highway before engaging in a race with Mr Churchill in his blue Holden. Other frightened motorists reported the two vehicles hurtling past a truck on either side at frightening speed before Mr Churchill lost control and the car left the bridge. Police said the ute was doing 160km/h before it hit the embankment and burst into flames. ‘Herald Sun’, Thurs, Jan 28. Knuckle dusters, axes, knives, iron bars, hunting bows and swords are among a potentially deadly haul of weapons being brought into classrooms by (high school) students. Children have fashioned knifes out of scissors and metal rulers, while machetes, fake guns and tomahawks have also been confiscted. Almost a quarter of high school staff have caught students with weapons, a survey has found. Disturbingly, 17 per cent of primary teachers have busted a child with a dangerous instument. “A student was carrying a steak knife in her pocket for months as protection as she believed, falsely, that someone was going to attack her,” one teacher revealed in the poll.
From Fr Kevin Dillon “If we don’t get three inches, man, or four to break this drought, we’ll all be rooned”, said Hanrahan, “before the year is out”. (John O’Brien) It’s not difficult to look at individual news reports and jump to conclusions especially when those reports concern behaviour that is worrisome and disturbing. “The world has gone mad”, “It’s all falling apart” and, for some “I’m glad I’m as old as I am - I’d hate to be growing up in a world like this” are statements which most likely have been regularly expressed and heard since time began. Well, the drought certainly broke this week with Wednesday’s deluge. Hanrahan’s pessimism need not always prevail, and if we look for disturbing trends in our society, we will most certainly find them. But that doesn’t necessarily mean “We’ll all be rooned!”. Nonetheless, there really are some increasingly disturbing signs that our society is losing its way. Fiery deaths of teenagers in high-powered cars, and children in Primary Schools taking weapons to school, to be used either defensively or offensively, depending on how the 10 year-old sees it.
Then there’s the totally out-of-control “parties”, attended by hundreds of youths communicating by “social media” - with car loads of police abused and attacked. Now these news items, all from Thursday’s papers this week, might be inaccurate, exaggerated or unfair, perhaps a little, perhaps considerably. But no-one has so far claimed this to be the case. People who get lost in the bush often stray far from the track before they realise how lost they have become. They keep telling themselves that they will soon get their bearings and all will be well. Life, individual and societal, is often not much different. Stories like these might be dismissed as being of little true meaning. Or they can be genuine indications that there are some problematic issues which are ignored at our peril, and need to be addressed with both courage and conviction. Fr Kevin Dillon, Geelong Deanery Coordinator and Association of Canonical Administrator President OAM

Resolve I resolve with hope and grace to amend my life tomorrow. ‘Examen’ adaption by Fr. Michael Hansen SJ)
Faith Matters Reflection, Repentance and Renewal
some of it to others often we have missed the fundamental point of the Gospel entirely.
I have been touched by the enthusiasm and excitement I have been fortunate to witness over the first few days of the school year.
When you give up your time for another you are in many ways Christ to that person. Jesus himself was fortunate enough to experience the Holy presence of others in his life, Mary and the woman who was a sinner, who illustrated this concept of giving (Luke 10:3842 and Luke 7:36-50).
Staff and students are full of hope for all that might be and joyful in their approach to the new year. As Catholics we will next week celebrate Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. I hope that as a community we may enter into this time of reflection, repentance and renewal in a similar way. Lent is a liturgical season lasting forty days, excluding Sundays, end on Holy Thursday. During this time we are reminded of the need to reaffirm our relationship with God. Our Tradition offers us three actions during Lent that enable us to live more fully in communion with the Creator. These are giving alms (offering support to others), fasting and prayer. Fasting enables us to experience a personal sacrifice in memory of Jesus’ death and all that he gave up for us. Some possible personal responses include: Not eating meat on Friday, or Good Friday; not eating chocolate or coffee or abstaining from alcohol. In a biblical sense we aim to experience in some way the fasting of Christ in the desert as he prepared for his ministry (Matthew 4:1-2). Alms giving or doing good works, encourages us to reach out to those in need. The cornerstone of Jesus’ ministry was helping those in need; the outcasts, the forgotten and those at the margins. In giving of himself, he was able to heal the wounds of selfishness, greed and intolerance. Through his Divine nature he was able to cure illness and overcome death. We, too, can become Christ to our brothers and sisters through our actions. Opportunities such as Project Compassion, the Christ Church ‘Meals Program’ and other social justice initiatives assist us in helping others.
Likewise, prayer is a practice that we can fail to engage in, due to the pressures of life. Making a change in this area is difficult as we are ‘busy’ and may not know how to go about it. I would suggest that we are not ‘too busy to pray’; we are in fact “too busy not to pray”. Making time to pray can be difficult unless it becomes something that you wish to develop as a habit, place value upon and make time for. During Jesus’ ministry he often had to physically make time for prayer by moving away from people (Luke 5:16). If Jesus, God’s own Son, found the need to make time to pray in solitude, we probably need to do the same. Communal prayer and sharing of Eucharist at Mass are vital to our faith, yet a personal relationship with God is something equally important. Some suggestions to help you start might include the following: Praying while setting aside the two minutes it takes to boil the kettle, praying whilst walking your dog in the evening, praying when you first wake up or as you go to sleep. Ultimately, when, how and where you pray is not important, what is important is that you do! Praying does not need to be demanding experience. In fact Jesus teaches us that we need to not go on at length to be heard or build a relationship. [Mark 6:7). Instead speak to God honestly and from your heart. He is your most trusted friend who knows what you need before you even ask and understands the depth of your love for Him. If you are unsure of how to pray, begin by giving thanks for the good God has provided, make a sincere request or an intercession for another and acknowledge that only God can provide what we require.
What you are able to do for another, or how much money you can offer in support is somewhat inconsequential. What is of substance is heart felt giving and the most important gift we can give to another is time. Often our time is limited due to our work and home life commitments, but the time we offer to others is even more valuable as a result.
I hope that throughout Lent you are able to be more fully present to those in your life and are also able to enter into this time of repentance and preparation for the great celebration of Easter. I wish you all the very best and hope that you achieve success in turning back to God and spreading the Gospel.
How we choose to spend each day, hour or minute is up to us, although if we do not offer

Every homeroom is allocated a classroom as its base and a teacher or teachers (who usually teaches that class for a number of classes) is/are assigned the role of Homeroom Teacher. This teacher is the key person contributing to the pastoral care of students and the smooth running of our College. The Homeroom teacher is usually the first person for parents to contact re school matters. If you are unsure about who to contact or would like to speak to any other member of staff please inform the receptionist about the nature of your enquiry and she will help you make contact with someone who can help or who you would like to speak to. 2016 Homeroom teachers are listed on the insert included with this Saint Ignatius Newsletter.

Activities can include performing arts productions, and concerts, excursions, religious ceremonies, with visiting speakers and workshop conveners or during class activities.
It is also worth noting that the library will be open until 4.30pm most days – a good opportunity for study/research time for students waiting for late buses or senior student study. Please use the short-term carpark off Peninsula Drive to drop off or pick up your student(s). No supervision of students is provided along Peninsula Drive, roadways and all out of bounds areas. Homeroom teachers have informed students about which areas are out of bounds.
Photographs complement the written material and are always carefully chosen. A permission form has been sent home with students seeking parent consent for use of images. If parents do not wish the photographic image of their child to be included for any of the above purposes, could you please notify Mrs. Claire Hewitt, Development Manager as soon as possible please.
Any queries can be forwarded to the Office. Examples of acceptable heal heights:

Important Notice: Dear Parents / Guardians, We would like to ask for your co-operation in an important matter. One of the children at the College is receiving medical treatment, which puts them at risk if they develop chicken pox or measles. The risk for this child can be reduced by receiving a special injection as soon as possible after coming into contact with these illnesses.
It is very important therefore, that you let us know immediately if your child develops chicken pox or measles, so that the child at risk receives the protective injection at the earliest opportunity by contacting the office on 5251 1136. This protection lasts for a few weeks only, and must be repeated every time they come into contact with these illnesses.
Your child is at no risk whatsoever for this situation. However, the health and well being of one of his / her classmates does depend on your help and co-operation. With many thanks. A Jesuit Partner School

The aim of the event is to connect the community and celebrate families in all of their diversity. The day has been designed so that families may attend, bring a picnic if you would like and have a wonderful day without paying a cent. There will be stalls and food vans that will offer a variety of goods, along with entertainment and activities for young children and teenagers. If you would like to support the day further we do have need of some volunteers to make cakes and or jams. If you are able to assist please contact Brendan Nicholls via the front office. All are invited and we hope that you are able to enjoy the day with your loved ones and the community. Sincerely, Brendan Nicholls

INSIGHTS Building parent-school partnerships WORDS Michael Grose
Creating good study and work habits in secondary school Here are seven healthy and strong study habits that will serve your young person well throughout their school years and their lives. Natural smarts is not the only factor that will impact on your young person’s success at school this year. A positive attitude, a sense of resilience and a willingness to persist and work through difficulties will help. Perhaps more importantly, it’s your young person’s work and study habits that will have the most potent impact on the marks they receive at the end of the year. It’s worth keeping in mind that the study habits they develop in school also impact on their success in life beyond school. Here are seven ways to develop healthy, strong study skills that will serve your young person well this year and throughout their lives.
1 Establish a thorough homework process Doing the homework is one thing, but there are many steps in the process before handing an assignment in. Encourage your young person to: • Write down an assignment when it’s given orally • Ask the teacher clarifying questions if he doesn’t understand anything • Use a planner or some other organiser to plan his or time • Place his homework in a designated place as soon as its finished.
2 Establish a Study Zone at home Choose a consistent study or homework space that’s conducive to working. Encourage your young person to stick to this space. Some young people need absolute quiet when doing homework, while others work better with soft music. Contrary to the opinions of many teens, studies consistently show that loud music and/or TV are highly distracting to students. Don’t let your young person develop the habit of working in bed as this will make it difficult to go to sleep. Keep work and sleep spaces separate.
3 Establish a regular study time The establishment of a consistent and specific time to do home work has been linked to academic success. Help your young person work out the best time for him or her to crack the books – before or after dinner, or both. Encourage your young person to take regular breaks to keep their brain alert. Every hour – or whenever she feels frustrated or angry – she should get up and walk around, get a snack and let her brain recover.
4 Establish a way to stay organised Getting organised reduces stress levels and improves the chance of success. Consider a colour-coding system to keep assignments organised by selecting a single colour for each class (like science or history). Use that colour for that subject’s folder, highlighters,
sticky notes, etc. The colours will not only keep your teen organised but will also enhance his or her recall of the subject.
5 Establish good time management skills The best way to help your young person organise their time is to use a large wall calendar so they can jot down study, leisure, family and other activities. The visual nature of the wall calendar will enable you as a parent to help them stay on track as well.
6 Eliminate time robbers Many teens work inefficiently wasting time on mobile devices and other activities. Help your teen recognise time robbers and eliminate them so they can finish homework quickly and have more time to do other things.
7 Conduct a regular extracurricular audit Take a hard look at your young person’s overall time commitments. Help them reprioritise their commitments if much of their time and energy is taken up with a parttime job, extracurricular activities, and their social lives. While it’s important that young people have interests outside school, it’s equally important that these commitments don’t overwhelm or impact negatively on their study.
