President’s Message Continuing Our Benedictine Tradition St. Anselm’s Abbey School and 77 Years of Transformation

"You cannot speak of Catholic education without speaking about humanity, because the Catholic identity is precisely that God became man. Education cannot be reduced to just the transmission of ideas; we must find new ways to help young people develop their capacity to think, to make, and to love.” Pope Francis

August 6th, 2019 + The Feast of the Transfiguration Dear Benefactors, Alumni, Parents, Students, Faculty, and Friends of St. Anselm’s Abbey and School: In this year’s Annual Report, I return to the theme of Transformation. The final draft of my introduction was finished on the Feast of the Transfiguration, a few weeks before the opening of our school on August 22nd. If all education is an exercise in transformation, the Feast The Transfiguration of the TransfigPainted by Fr. Stephen Reid, OSB uration seems (1912-1989) an appropriate time to be reflecting upon what has been happening and what can happen in the future. Each year’s Annual Report is supposed to include the major events from July 1st of one year to June 30th of the next. As usual, the first significant event for the monks—in the quietude of summer—is the Feast of Saint Benedict on July 11th. Great saints like a Benedict or an Anselm were able to seek an ecstasy of life or transfiguration of the ordinary into the extraordinary through their zeal for prayer and work. During summer break, the next important liturgical feast is the Transfiguration, on August 6th. Jesus, in His Transfiguration, gazes back at us with a luminous look of love that makes us desire to live His transparent beauty. Silently from Tabor's splendor, Christ, the Savior, begs: "Become what you behold." Jesus took Peter, and James and his brother, John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with Him. Matthew 17, 1-2

Again Scripture tells us, “In a resplendent cloud the Holy Spirit appeared. The Father’s voice was heard: ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.’” Certainly, in a Benedictine school, through the zeal of prayer and the work of education, our students change from what they are not into what they may become, so that all may be transformed and become a new creation. The whole of the St. Anselm’s Experience is a period of transformation—from young adolescence to young adulthood, from the beginning of understanding to the coming of wisdom. The academic year 2018-2019 was both exciting and notable. Exciting because we intiated our plans for the new Benedictine Learning Center with its focus on academics and scholarship, and notable because this year, St. Anselm’s Abbey School won more athletic banners than in any other year in the school’s history. By the time you receive this Annual Report, the summer of 2019 will be near its end. It is my hope that our readers will be able to share in the strengths and great accomplishments of this small, Benedictine “School of the Lord’s Service.” I want to take this opportunity to thank Bill Crittenberger, who completed his seventh year as headmaster. Bill took office on July 1st, 2012, as the tenth headmaster of St. Anselm’s, and for the past seven years has led the school with warmth, with enthusiasm, and with vision. As you will read later in this Annual Report, our Sixth Form students had many splendid acceptances into top colleges and universities, and I am pleased to report that our mission of academic excellence remains pre-eminent, always challenging, always supportive of each and every student. Our commencement speaker, Patrick Granfield, ’99, a member of the school’s Board of Trustees, challenged the Class of 2019 to take Benedict’s zeal for prayer and hard work to heart and build upon the intellectual foundation they received here; you can read his speech elsewhere in this publication.

Patrick Granfield was appointed Assistant to the President – Capital Campaign and Development, and he began his work for the school and abbey on the 29th of July. His principal focus is to manage the campaign for the Benedictine Learning Center. Let me now review other major events of the 20182019 academic and fiscal year. On August 23rd, the first full day of classes, the school opened its doors to 257 young scholars, and now for 77 years, the miracle we call the Priory or Abbey School has thrived. On September 7th, House Day, each new student was assigned to a particular house—Alban, Austin, Main, or Moore. Afterwards, there was a full day of sports and a picnic lunch so everyone could get acquainted and feel at home. The Parents Association, under the leadership of Laura and Cristian Libanati, held its annual Family Picnic on September 9th with ample food, games, and other delights for the huge crowd of parents, children, teachers, and guests. The social event of the year, the 36th Fall Scholarship Gala, this year called All Hallow’s Eve, took place on the evening of October 27th. I want to thank the scores of parents who worked so very hard to make the Gala a success, and I especially want to thank Kimberly Walhout, our Development Coordinator, who orchestrated the whole event. Likewise, I want to express my sincere gratitude to all who participated in the Gala—raising $313,668 for current-year financial aid. At the Gala, the school community honored Silvija and Brian Devine, ’59, along with their two children, Brooke and Brian, Jr., all of whom are members of the Devine Family Trust, for their many years of financial support. The school would not be what it is today if it were not for the Devine family. Their first gift was a million dollars for the renovation of the 1946 gym into the Devine Theater, and subsequently the Devines have given another four million dollars for the Endowed Scholarship Fund. Through the initiative of those matching Devine Campaigns, the Endowed Scholarship Fund now stands at ten million dollars. This generates over $400,000 each year for need-based financial aid. We are grateful to the entire Devine family for their help. The Alumni Office, under the direction of Lawrence Hamm, ’68, had a full schedule of well-attended events. The traditional Career Day was held on September 17th, when distinguished alumni shared their knowledge and expertise with our Fifth and Sixth Form students. On October 27th, thirty-six alumni and guests gathered at Rocket Bar downtown for the annual Damien Crane, ’55, Alumni Pool Tournament and Happy Hour. Attendees ranged from the Class of 1956 to the Class of 2014. In the singles, Michael Corrigan, ’83, defeated George Mattingly, ‘56. The doubles champions were George Mattingly, ’56, and Blair O’Connell, ‘05. Our Open House on November 4th was a great success; there were 145 potential new students in attendance. Many of the visitors told me that they were warmly greeted by our student guides and were impressed with

our academic program and the beauty of our abbey grounds. Thanks to Admission Director Peter Young, ’01, many of these visitors blossomed forth into new admission applications. The Priory Players production of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, under the direction of Maureen Boman, our new drama teacher, was staged on the weekend of November 17th. The cast did a superb job; this was a most wonderful musical production, enjoyed by all attendees. On December 18th, our Winter Concert again astounded the audience with the extraordinary talent of our students. Through the guidance of faculty members Maestro Maican, Michael Lodico, and Blair Sutton, the talents of our students exhibited the best part of our fine arts program. The same afternoon, the school hosted Form VII Forever, our Past Parents social organization, and many were able to attend the Christmas Concert, which was followed by a wine and cheese reception on the mezzanine. Abbot James and Bill Crittenberger welcomed the attendees. Then in late January 2019, Assistant Headmaster Kirk Otterson and I went to Boston for the Model United Nations Conference.

Fifth Form students in attendance were: 1st row: Nick Daniel, Terry Flannery, Joshua Gu, Will Monahan, Peter Zorc; 2nd row: Jack Craig, Ian Ogilvie, Anton Wellisz. While in Boston, I attended an alumni gathering at the home of Annette and Michael Mariani, ’88. Pictured are Diane and Brian Elenbaas, ’87, Fr Peter, Michael and Annette, and John Hansen, ’78.

Two weeks later, on Thursday, February 7th, Richard Stafford, ’53, hosted 13 alumni and Headmaster Bill Crittenberger in New York City at the Links Club: Marshall Hayes, ’88, Timothy Taylor, ’04, Taru Thompson, ’09, Lucas Husted, ’09, Paul Yao, ’78, Evan Ernst, ’00, Richard Stafford, ’53, Fr. Peter, Lawrence Lucier, ’86, James Lucier, ’82, Brian McMahon, ’79, Thomas Lee, ’87, Bill Crittenberger, Robert Bond, ’01.

Declan Friel, Lucas Shi, Hayden Dangle, Thomas Caballero, Xavier Preston, Kyle Whilock, Nathan Alakjia, John Commins, Peter Clark, Carlo Pizzano, Michael Gerrety, Fr. Peter.

On the weekend of March 1st, the 72nd Annual St. Anselm’s Invitational Basketball Tournament filled our gym with crowds of athletes and spectators. With longtime coach Paul Grenaldo, our varsity team played valiantly, and for the second year in a row, we won the tournament. I want to thank Athletic Director Steve Roush and all the parents for their hard work and time to make this event such a success.

chestrated the hidden and not-so-hidden talents of our students. The eleventh annual All-Alumni Reunion Weekend events were held April 26 - 28th. As is tradition, a member of the class celebrating its 50th reunion delivered the Distinguished Alumnus Address to the entire school community. This year, the alumni speaker was Peter McLaughlin, who has held a professorship at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) since 2003. His principal interests are philosophy of science and the history of early modern philosophy of science. Everyone enjoyed his address very much. The next day, the 5K Run / Walk in Memory of Peter Samp, ’08, started at 10:00 am and was followed by the Family Barbecue. Many alumni attended Vespers at 6:00 pm and then joined classmates at the Cocktail Reception and the Alumni Banquet. It is with great joy that I can report that on May 25th, Br. Samuel (Padraic) Springuel, ’98, was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Michael Fisher in the abbey chapel. Br. Samuel attended St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vermont, where he started as Physics major, went on to double major in Physics and Psychology and ultimately graduated with a B.A. in Psychology. He completed his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Maine in 2010, having done his thesis work in the sub-field of Physics Education Research. Just before Fr. Samuel joined our abbey, he was a Physics Instructor at the University of Maryland. Fr. Samuel will be teaching Robotics and Computer Science in our school this coming fall.

Lent was late this year, so the second Form VII Forever event was the Lenten Mass and Brunch on March 10th. Fr. Michael Hall, OSB, ’56, school chaplain, celebrated the Mass. Afterwards, 70 guests made their way down to the Commons to partake of a plentiful hot breakfast with clustered platters of cluttered delectables. On the weekend of March 15th, the Priory Players performed Henry V. Director Maureen Boman, the cast, and the crew are once again to be commended for this most professional production. Then on April 13th, the Spring Concert and Art Show took place; again, Maestro Maican, Michael Lodico, and Blair Sutton or2018-2019 Annual Report

could not survive—thank you so much. Know that the monks pray daily for you and your families. Since November, the school has also raised $2,134,616 for the Benedictine Learning Center during this “Quiet Phase” of the campaign. And so another year has passed. As I said in my opening paragraph, great saints like a Benedict or an Anselm were able to seek an ecstasy of life or transfiguration of the ordinary into the extraordinary through their zeal for prayer and work. This occurs when insight or revelation of an underlying pattern or understanding pierces the heart and reconfigures the mind, thereby transforming our frequently chaotic or confused experiences. On Monday June 3rd; the 26th Annual Golf Outing in Memory of Patrick Attridge, ’74, was held for the last time at the Glenn Dale Golf Club. We must find a new golf course for next year since Glenn Dale has been sold for a housing project. The Golf Outing was founded by James Filpi, ’86, but Pat Attridge enthusiastically ran it for 23 years. Pat was a member of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association from 1990 to 2012, its Treasurer from 1992 to 2012, and the recipient of the Abbot Alban Boultwood Award for service to the school community in 2011. He was the brother of Daniel F. Attridge, ’72, and the father of Brian, ’00, Kevin, ’03, Michael, ’07, and Sean, ’12.

great saints are able to begin again and renew their efforts. Somehow, they have a genius sufficient to meet these continual new challenges through prayer and work. It is my hope, my prayer, and my work that this tranquility and peace is found here at St. Anselm’s for each and every person who comes in contact with our “school for the Lord’s service.” Pax in Sapientia,

Fr. Peter Weigand, OSB President

A day of great weather and much celebration, this year the Golf Outing raised $25,000 for the Scholarship Fund. On Sunday the 9th of June, the students participating in the Appalachia Service Project left our gym parking lot for a week of hard work transforming / rehabbing houses in West Virginia with much camaraderie and excitement.

As June came to a close, Kimberly Walhout, our Development Coordinator, told me that in the 2018-2019 fiscal year, the Annual Fund raised $409,489. Since July 1st, 2018, the school has raised a total of $895,384; this includes $313,668 from the Gala but does not include money raised for the Benedictine Learning Center. A full list of donors and gifts is presented in the following pages. Without your prayers and benefactions, this Benedictine abbey and school in the Nation’s Capital

Headmaster’s Letter Dear Members of the St. Anselm’s Community: Dear St. Anselm’s Community, The ’18-’19 school year was among the best in recent memory, marked by a senior class that comfortably rivaled any of the six previous graduating cohorts. As strong a senior class as this one was, the upcoming group, 2020, may be even stronger. Time will tell. The rising seniors, the class of 2020, absolutely killed it on their AP showing this spring, earning marks of 3, 4, or 5 on a stratospheric 92 percent of their exams. [3s, 4s, and 5s are considered “passing,” as these marks, depending on a college’s academic policy, are what earns a student “college credit.”] 92 percent (or 23 out of 25) stands in stark contrast to the national average of 65 percent (13 out of 20) and, further, lands this group beyond that of any recent Abbey class, those from the 2010s. [Yes, time will tell.]

Chair’s Report Dear Members of the St. Anselm’s Community, It has been a great privilege for me to serve as the Chair of the Board of Trustees during the past year, continuing my previous six years as a Board member. During the 2018-19 academic year, the Board has focused on three priorities – the Benedictine Learning Center; student enrollment; and Board engagement. As described below, we have made significant progress on all three objectives. Benedictine Learning Center: After reviewing the results of a feasibility study conducted by an outside consultant, the Board decided at our September 2018 meeting to move forward with the proposal to raise the funds to construct a new building to be called the Benedictine Learning Center. The BLC is designed to provide much needed space for both the School and the Monastery. For the School, the BLC will contain a larger, updated computer and technology center, a new library, multimedia space, tutorial rooms, an art display area, and a campus ministry office. For the Monastery, it will contain a new library, a conference and seminar center, and the monastic archives. In addition, the BLC will have a chapel large enough for 50 worshipers and a sacristy. The estimated cost of this project is approximately $10 million. To raise these funds, we have benefited from the leadership of Fr. Peter Weigand, Abbot James Wiseman, Board members Christian Barry, ’85 and Margit Nahra, and past parent Erich Schwartz. While we are just getting started in the quiet phase of our capital campaign, we have already received gifts and pledges that total in excess of $2 million, with financial commitments from 100% of the lay Board members. We are now pursuing six and seven figure commitments from other prospective donors before we move to the public phase of the campaign. We greatly appreciate the support we have received thus far, and we look forward to achieving our goal of building the BLC. Student Enrollment: One of the keys to the School’s success over the years has been our ability to attract bright boys who have the potential to become exceptional men. As a consequence, the School must consistently focus our finite resources on maximizing our opportunities to recruit boys who can take advantage of our program. During the past year, under the leadership of Board member Patrick Granfield, ’99 and Director of Admissions Peter Young, ’01, we have taken a fresh look at our enrollment efforts. This has led to the pursuit of some new initiatives based on the following principles: (1) improving the use of data for targeted outreach to potential applicants; (2) forging collaborative relationships with parents and other recruiting partners; (3) utilizing social media platforms

and digital messaging to promote the School; (4) identifying small investments that can yield a big impact in the School’s appeal; and (5) engaging the community as a whole in the recruitment efforts. We are confident that these measures will aid our efforts to attract the best and the brightest. Board Engagement: Although the Board’s primary focus is on issues that are long-term and strategic, it is essential that we have strong working relationships with the School’s various constituencies. To that end, guided by Board member Faith Schwartz, we took a close look at the ways that we connect with the School community with a goal of achieving a higher level of engagement. We came up with five areas for promoting better engagement: (1) inviting leaders of the various constituencies to make informal presentations at Board meetings; (2) making available opportunities for the Trustees to visit the School to observe the educational experience in operation; (3) encouraging Trustees to attend School events; (4) designating a Board representative to attend Parents’ Association meetings; and (5) communicating with the School’s constituencies about the Board’s role and responsibilities. Headmaster: After much reflection and discussion, the Board and our Headmaster, Bill Crittenberger, mutually determined that he would conclude his service at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. Bill has served with distinction during the past seven years. He has been strongly dedicated to maintaining and advancing the success of the School despite the many challenges we have faced. Working cooperatively with our community, Bill has taken steps to promote the School’s outstanding academic reputation and our Benedictine ethos. The Board is profoundly grateful for his leadership, and we look forward to continuing to work with him during the coming year as we undertake a nationwide search for his successor. Board member Matt Nolan, ’76, an internationally recognized attorney, will chair the Board’s search committee. The committee welcomes input from the St. Anselm’s community, especially your referral of highly qualified candidates. Continued on next page

Continued from previous page Board Members: The Board expresses its appreciation to five of our members who have concluded their terms of service: Beth Blaufuss, Herb Brooks, Susan Creighton, Jim Hearn, ’77, and Margit Nahra. All five have been fantastic contributors to our efforts to support the School’s mission, and we are very grateful for their service. Joining the Board as new members are Robert Bell (a past parent and preeminent attorney), Michael Mariani, ’88 (an alumnus and highly regarded business executive), and Katy Prebble (President of the Academy of the Holy Cross). We welcome them and look forward to their thoughtful contributions. Monks, Faculty, Staff, and Parents: The School and our students are blessed by the remarkable support that

we receive from a highly dedicated group of monks led by Abbot James, Fr. Peter, and Fr. Michael Hall, ’56, our wonderful faculty and staff, and our tremendous parents. The Board is grateful to them, especially for the many times they go above and beyond what might reasonably be expected. It is what makes St. Anselm’s such as special community. Without their efforts, our students would not be able to achieve their goals. With best regards,

Daniel Attridge, ’72 Chair of the Board of Trustees

Why I give...

Brendan Gleason, ’03

Those of us who were lucky enough to attend St. Anselm’s remember working hard in the classroom; we remember gathering for announcements; many of us remember dropping eggs from the gym, and some of us remember learning all of the ways to join independent clauses in a sentence; however, we also remember that this community prepared us not just for college but for life beyond. (And we also learned to recognize a run-on sentence when we see one.) I want to make sure that this St. Anselm’s experience remains in reach for all Abbey boys, present and future. And because I know that, every school day, students are going up the hill to have as much fun at the top as I did.

It is a school and community that celebrates not just academic and athletic excellence but also kindness, integrity, humility, faith, service, humor, wit, and camaraderie. The staff and faculty carefully cultivate an environment that balances a rigorous workload and high expectations with support, understanding and friendship. Each student is truly known and valued. We are constantly amazed by the sense of community at the school. Certainly, our son’s class has a bond of friendship that we suspect will endure for many, many years to come. As our son begins his adult life we know that St. Anselm’s prepared him to work hard, think critically, recover from setbacks, and help those around him succeed in the process. We proudly give to St. Anselm’s with the knowledge that our support will provide other young men with the transformative education that our son has had in his six years at the school. Kristi and Bruce Craig, parents of Jack (class of 2020)

I came to the Abbey in 1972 - terrified, insecure, lost and adrift. I did not know that our little school would become central and transformative, that the experience would forever render me capable of amazing things - not always in the ways I expected, but amazing nonetheless. I was given what most are not given at other institutions: support, kindness, grounding, and most of all, love. These gifts, this grace, were freely given to a child who couldn't even afford to be there. These things can be felt still today, even by my children through me. I am humbled and grateful. I will contribute to this school in any way I can, for as long as I can, and it will never be enough. Pax. Michael O'Connell, Esq., 1978 Class of 2001

The Benedictine Learning Center The Benedictine Learning Center will be for our laity a concrete example of their empowerment in carrying our Benedictine mission well into the future. This new facility will offer more than libraries, a student chapel, multi-media rooms, a technology center, galleries, and new areas for gathering, teaching, and enrichment. Most importantly, it will be a place for prayer, reading, studying, and work; a Sacred Space where the commitment to Ora et Labora and Pax in Sapientia is evident.

and our students to the capabilities they need to serve and thrive in our world today. The Benedictine Learning Center will strengthen our “school for the Lord’s service,” allowing each member of our community to develop more completely their God-given talents and to appreciate more clearly how they are called to affirm the inherent dignity of all. Abbot James Wiseman, OSB Fr. Peter Weigand, OSB

The Benedictine Learning center will become a literal bridge between our school and monastery. Just as powerfully, it will bridge our tradition to our future

Dr. Ines Bustillo, past parent and board member, Chevy Chase, MD

"The heart and soul of a St. Anselm's experience is the knowledge and spiritual nourishment gained by the students' interaction with the monks. The unification of the School and the Abbey in the common space of the Benedictine Learning Center will enhance this experience and advance St. Anselm's academic excellence in the years to come." Cmdr. (USN) Gavan Montague, ’91, current parent, Takoma Park, MD

"The world is a complicated place, but we don’t need to figure it out all for ourselves in the limited time span of our own lives. We have the benefit of history and tradition – millennia of thought and divinely inspired work – to guide us. The Benedictine Learning Center will allow our community greater access to this invaluable resource."

Dr. Vincent Sawicki, friend of the school, Richmond, VA

"The Benedictine Learning Center will help provide the intellectual nourishment to prepare these young men for the future. The ripple effect of what it achieves will be felt far beyond the walls of the Abbey."

2018-2019 Annual Report

A Message from the Abbot Dear Friends of St. Anselm’s, Having been reminded by email that my letter for our annual report would soon be due, I decided to write it while enjoying a few weeks visiting relatives and friends in other parts of our country. As I write, I am sitting on the patio of a friend’s home in Louisville on a mild and perfectly peaceful summer evening, with not a disturbing sound in earshot. Earlier, I had just finished reading a rather well-known account of the clash between “civilization and barbarism” in the first half of the nineteenth century in Argentina, a particularly troubled period in that nation’s history. The author, Domingo Sarmiento, eventually became his country’s ambassador to the United States and also served for a while as president of Argentina, but he devoted much of his life’s work to promoting education throughout his native land, for he was convinced that widespread education was the only remedy for the barbarism that was so often reflected in the words and deeds of those who had gained positions of great power, whether regional or national. It is really that same conviction that has made education a key part of the work that our monastic community has always done. We have never assumed that we have finally gotten everything “just right,” so we are constantly striving to provide an ever-better education for the young men who attend our school. It is certainly gratifying to learn of the many ways in which their schooling has enabled our graduates to serve others in a wide variety of professions. One such alumnus was Bernard Hillig, M.D., who died this summer at a very advanced age. His widow, Jean, subsequently sent me a card expressing her gratitude that two of us monks had concelebrated his funeral Mass. She added that “the best-known secret of Bernie’s life is how much he appreciated and loved his dear St. Anselm’s education over these many years.” I have no doubt that countless alumni feel the same way. As always, we are immensely grateful for all the support that you give us, whether by volunteering your time or making monetary gifts. A separate section of this annual report lists those who have made donations specifically for the needs of the abbey itself, while other lists refer to gifts made to our school. Be assured of our regular prayers for all of our benefactors. Sincerely in Saint Benedict,

James A. Wiseman, OSB Abbot

St. Anselm’s Abbey School

Vespers of Graduation Commencement Address

PATRICK GRANFIELD, ’99 Wow. What an honor. When my mom heard I was speaking today she was really proud. And my step-father: well, he was absolutely amazed. It was four or five years ago that Father Peter spoke to me about coming to the Abbey to say a few words. I was at the State Department then and I told him, “Father, I’m sorry but I’m traveling a lot. Sure, I’m on the sidelines for most of it – but we do have a few balls in the air – Syria, the Iran Deal, Middle East Peace – can we wait until things settle down a bit?" Well, now that’s all figured out. So, here I am. But to Abbot James, Father Peter, and the Monastic Community, to Mr. Crittenberger, fellow Trustees, faculty and staff, to parents families, and friends, and most of all, to the Class of 2019, thank you for having me today. It really is one of the great honors of my life to speak to you from this special place on what is a deeply meaningful day for these young men. And the Class of 2019 has left a real legacy. Some of you helped start a swim team. Others set an example through your service in Appalachia. And of course, you’ve won more PVAC titles than other class in St. Anselm’s history. I’ve actually heard your teachers say that you are one of the closest and most creative classes they’ve seen. There’s an accomplished ballet dancer, a wonderful cantor, and even a champion power lifter. That’s some real diversity. You have achieved great things. In part, that’s due to this community and what makes St. Anselm’s great – That even as classes and times change – certain foundations remain. And it’s these foundations – the qualities that animate this community: a spirit of humility, a concern for human dignity, and what St. Benedict called “the good zeal,” that I want to talk about today. Because it’s these qualities I hope these graduates carry forward. I’ll start with humility. And I know for teachers who were here when I was a senior; they might find that a bit ironic. But I can remember the pride I felt 20 years ago when I sat where you are today. I can probably count on my two hands the times I’ve felt as much pride. And maybe that’s a sign I peaked in high school. Actually, my sister tells me that all the time.

But what I’ve learned a few times since, is that it’s often moments like this – at times when you’ve really arrived – when a little humility goes a long way. Let me tell you about two times that was true for me. One of them involves Father Peter. And now I’m sure I’m making him nervous about what I’m about to say. Six or seven summers ago, when Father Peter came to Chicago, I could not have been more pleased with my self that I could take Father Peter to City Hall, whisk him up to the 5th floor, and get him a meeting with my boss, Mayor Rahm Emanuel. I couldn’t hide my pride – even as Father Peter started telling Rahm – in his own loving way – that I wasn’t the most gifted student when I came to St. Anselm’s. That when I arrived – I was a little "rough around the edges” Of course, Rahm interrupted, “Father, I hate to break it to you,” the Mayor said, “he’s still rough around the edges.” I have one more story along those lines that’s more relevant to the graduates. And Rahm Emanuel isn’t in it so there’s no need to censor it. After I taught at the Abbey for three years, I went to the Middle East to launch a newspaper. And really the paper launched me with it. I was traveling from Beirut to Baghdad every other week it seemed. Basically, I thought I was a really big deal. But much of what I achieved was due to this one grizzled Scottish editor, Ross Anderson, and what he taught me. Now Ross had never completed college. He didn’t have a complete set of teeth. Imagine a cross between Austin Powers, the Highlander, and Hagrid from Harry Potter. One night, I picked up the phone to hear his deep Glaswegian. “Patrick. I’ve got some good news. I’ve heard they’re naming you the opinion editor.” Of course he heard it. I’m sure it was him who put me up for the job.

2018-2019 Annual Report

| 37

“It’s a good fit,” he said, “Because you do have many opinions. And for an Irish Catholic, you have quite a Protestant work ethic. But a wee bit of advice,” he continued, “Remember: I taught you everything you know, and you still know nothing.” As it turned out, he was right. I did know very little.

You cannot allow that to happen. The moment you walk across this stage, the opportunities you have had here become your obligation. And that’s where the final aspect of this community, what St. Benedict called good zeal, comes into play.

Less than a year later the Arab Spring began. A counter-reformation began just as quickly. Bloggers and activists were thrown in jail. There was little room for journalism, much less opinion. Not too long after getting a top job, my wife and I returned to the U.S.

As you leave this Benedictine community, especially at this moment in history, it’s worth thinking about what Benedict did and how he did it. Benedict was born just after the Roman Empire fell in the West. He lived at a time when an old order was dying but a new one had yet to be born. In some ways, Benedict was like you. He was well-educated. He was privileged. So how did Benedict react to the challenge and change of his day? Did he hoard his riches or protect his privilege? Did he curse other cultures and traditions?

Now graduates, you’re an accomplished group. I’m not here to tell you that you know nothing. But please, take time today to thank the people who taught YOU almost everything you know. Those are the people sitting in front of you – your parents, teachers, and friends. Take time today to thank your families for the sacrifices they made so that you could receive this wonderful education. Thank those in this community who didn’t just teach you a subject; they showed you how to be lifelong learners, they showed you respect and dignity. And that brings me to my second theme – dignity, and what it demands of you. It was probably my junior year here that I began to notice how every day, without fail, Father Edmund opened the door for me. Every day, he greeted me and every other student by name. One day, I finally asked him why. “Every person should be recognized,” he said, “They should be treated with dignity. They should know their own dignity.” Father Edmund left us a couple years ago. But what he said about dignity is part of what defines this school. I hope it will define your lives long after you leave it. Because I hate to break it to you – but dignity is not the driving force behind every community. Some will remind you more of the Department of Motor Vehicles than St. Anselm’s Abbey. Sometimes you’ll be a number rather than a name. Always resist the urge to make others the same. I know a graduation speaker isn’t supposed to compare the world to the DMV. I’m supposed to tell you about the places you’ll go, or “to follow your dreams,” or that the world is your oyster. But at times the world is more like the ocean – it can be vast and moody and often random. And that’s probably truer for you in 2019 than it was in 1999 or even for graduates in 1949.

No, he did none of that. He put forth the best blueprint for building community he knew. He built a community united by shared prayer and work, a community that prized humility, hospitality, and dignity. They don’t usually tell you this at St. Anselm’s but, at first, he failed miserably. His fellow monks tried to poison him. But Benedict was persistent. He wasn’t a zealot, but he lived with the zeal he wrote about in his Rule. He knew what he believed and he had the zeal to get after it. An old boss of mine used to paraphrase Dr. King and talk about how the arc of history is long but it bends towards justice. But history doesn’t bend itself by itself. It only bends towards justice by people who live with zeal, who build communities that affirm the dignity of others. So how do you bend history? And now I know I’m that guy – I’ve been talking for 10 minutes but haven’t provided a single answer. I’ll leave you with something I learned when I was a senior. It was from Pericles, the Athenian leader, speaking to his fellow citizens, before an attack from Sparta. Pericles said that the, “the tomb of heroic men and their story is not only given on stone monuments,” Instead, “it abides everywhere without visible symbol. Their memory is woven into the stuff of other men’s lives.”

You’re entering a world changing faster than ever before, where American influence is threatened more than ever before – a world where technologies like quantum computing, AI, and autonomy will transform your lives.

You are and you will be the monument of what St. Anselm’s has provided for you. No, the world is not your oyster. But if you remember the spirit of humility, dignity, and zeal you saw here, no matter what the tide may bring, no matter how the currents change, you will create something lasting and something true.

There’s plenty of uncertainty ahead. But one thing’s for certain: you’ll need to lean on others to navigate these changes. You’ll need to work with others in community to answer its challenges. And you cannot allow your intellect to be an excuse for cynicism or inaction.

What you create will be woven up into the lives of others. Class of 2019, congratulations on all you have achieved. I can’t wait to see what you build and create in the years to come. Thank you. ♦

As one of my favorite poets, W.B. Yeats once wrote, “The worst are full of passionate intensity, while the best lack all conviction.”

St. Anselm’s Abbey School

Austin Scholar Award

HENRY YUAN, ’19

I would like to start by saying thank you to all the teachers, monks, family, and friends who have played a part in getting this class to graduation. We are very grateful for all the love and support you have given us. Last week at the Parent Association panel I was asked, “What was the most challenging, but most rewarding class you have taken at St. Anselm’s?” Mr. Alspaugh’s Ethics immediately popped into my head because of all the deep philosophical questions like “Do the ends justify the means.” But I chose Dr. Downey’s Humanities instead. I did not enjoy taking this class at the time because of all the memorization, but afterwards I enjoyed being able to walk into a museum and recognize the difference between Monet and Cezanne. It didn’t occur to me then, but I now realize that any class we have taken here at St. Anselm’s could be considered the most difficult but most rewarding class. I also realized that my overall experience at this school has been similar; I was not very fond of some aspects of this school earlier on, but my appreciation for them has grown over the years and will continue to grow as I move on to the next step of my life. When I think about my time here, three main aspects of this school will stick out in my memory: the academics, the community, and the spirituality.

But even with this force pulling me away, I appreciate the community here and always will. The small class has really allowed us to make long-lasting friendships, but also to bond with everyone in the class. I will never forget how supportive everyone was despite our differences in interests, political views, or religious faiths. I remember that for the first year or so that I was here, I did not tell anyone that I did ballet because I got negative feedback at the public school I previously attended, but I eventually found out that this school is a place where people can be open about who they are. I will also never forget how everyone was always willing to help and look out for everyone else. It was always comforting to know that the Calculus group chat was always there if I had a question about a problem or if I wanted to see where I was relative to the Power Curve. Lastly, I will feel this same kind of nostalgia for the spiritual aspect of this school even if while I was here I did not necessarily recognize the value in morning masses, standing up for morning prayer, or religion class every year. We will all appreciate the depth of Christian education we have received and maybe even remember all the Benedictine Hallmarks. I am not religious, but I’m sure all the stories about Jesus, facts about papal infallibility, and arguments from the Summa Theologica will come in handy because of the relevance of Christianity in our society today. I will find myself reminiscing about the years I have spent here, and my gratitude for my experience here will continue to grow. We will all remember the good times we have shared here, but we must also move on. Hopefully we will all find, in the next step of our lives, a place that offers a similar academic rigor, close-knit community, and spirituality. Also, let the class of 2019 use the education, friendships, and religious experience that St. Anselm’s Abbey School has given us to give back to the world and work for a better one. ♦

First of all, the academic curriculum at St. Anselm’s is very rigorous, and at times torturous, but having gone through the curriculum, I appreciate what I have learned and will appreciate it later, whether it be through having a leg up on a religion class in college or knowing the answer to a trivia question about Alexander the Great. Every class at this school, especially the crazy difficult ones, have taught us important skills and information. Ethics taught us to think and how to use our best judgment, Language and Composition taught us to write and how to pass the infamous Terms Test, Humanities taught us art history and how to use the laptops for good instead of evil. I don’t think anyone enjoys writing a ten-page research paper in one night or doing VHL or mastering physics homework, but we will reap the benefits, and we will miss and more fully appreciate the small classes and passionate teachers at this school. Second, I will also miss the community at this school. I had a hard time appreciating the small, warm, and supportive community because I left early almost everyday for ballet, and rehearsals on weekends limited my time to hang out with friends outside of school.

ROTC scholarship. If anyone saw the work he put in, they would be inspired as well. I figured if he could do it with hard work, so could I. I looked at the challenge to balance academics and three sports as a way of preparing myself for future successes. How I do anything was how I was going to do everything. I took the time to set goals for myself. In this process, learning from my pains and failures strengthened me. The Abbey pushed me and many of my classmates to learn from our failures.

Abbot James, Father Peter, Father Michael, Mr. Crittenberger, Faculty and Staff, Parents, and my fellow classmates. I think this speech cannot begin without pointing out my parents. If nothing stands out in my speech today, make sure you remember how awesome my parents are. For all my brother and I have done for this school, he and I reflect the love, care, discipline, humility, and commitment to excellence my mother and father have instilled into their children. Shout out to my sister Anna, my Uncle Randy. I know you both wish you were here but it is still all love. My time at the abbey began mostly from such great reviews from my older brother CJ. I did not expect to stay here long at all, hoping to use my smarts and athleticism to get into Dematha, Spaulding, or Gonzaga. Once I decided to stay and I saw my brother graduate with such high recognition; I knew this is where I was meant to be. I saw him work his tail off to get that

My father always says, “Old age is not for the weak minded.” I beg to differ, as I believe success isn’t for the weak minded. Success is in your control, you determine what success is for you and no one else can touch it. Yes the pains and failures will teach you something but the act of persevering will be far more important in your life journey. Today is not the end of the road and neither is our college graduation. Every act of perseverance will push you to your successes. I found the strength to persevere from a book called Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. My mother was the one to give it to me. Peale said that the greatest power of the human intellect is the ability to change your attitude. This line taught me that in the face of external or internal negativity, adversity, or hardship, a positive attitude will help me to persevere. My life would be much different without this understanding. As much as prayer strengthens me, when adversity strikes, having a positive attitude to encourage myself and my classmates helped us achieve our successes. My successes are nothing without my friends who are to the left and right of me. When I failed, when any of us failed, we had each other, we had family. We persevered through many of our individual pains as family. The class of 2019 is the greatest class to ever run through the abbey. ♦

Form II Transition Alumni Speaker ADRIAN DHANARAJ, ’09

Good Afternoon Everyone! Thank you, Mr. Leathers, for that kind introduction. And thank you to Fr. Peter, Fr. Michael, Mr. Crittenberger, the faculty, staff, parents and family members, and especially the Form II Abbey Boys whom we are celebrating today. I’m honored to be here to celebrate your transition to high school. Congratulations! As someone who was once in your shoes, I know that each of you have accomplished so much to be here today. I imagine, if you’re like I was, you are also really excited about the many opportunities ahead as you begin the next four years here at the Abbey. And you should be excited about this. As Mr. Leathers mentioned, I currently serve young men who have had the highest of obstacles stacked against them their entire lives. My students are currently incarcerated, and they’re facing very difficult circumstances because they have been denied so many opportunities to grow and learn in a safe and nurturing environment. So many of my students have not had adequate housing, food, physical healthcare, and mental health care, not to mention not having teachers and mentors who are able to build up their confidence and let my students know that there’s someone in their corner. They haven’t had someone who believes they can do great things and who can support them. Many of my students tell us that the first time they ever felt that their needs are met and that they have people who believe in them has been when they get to our school, the Maya Angelou Academy. Unfortunately at this point, they are now incarcerated. I share this today because there is not a day that goes by in my work at Maya Angelou that I do not reflect on the numerous opportunities that were available to me throughout my life, especially because I had the opportunity to be an Abbey Boy. I had my share of struggles growing up, as I’m sure many of you have as well. But the opportunity to go to this school opens doors for all of us that so many young men can only dream of. It’s up to us to make the most of these opportunities and, I believe, show gratitude for having them.

their voices heard. Their voices have so much to bring to every discussion but are often drowned out. The second is to lead with humility. Your teachers and the monks model this every day. You are going to have so many leadership skills because of the experiences you have had and will continue to have here at the Abbey. Those skills will speak for themselves as you seek to lead others, whether it’s in class, in extracurriculars, community service projects, and eventually in college and your career. Remaining humble as you lead will help you build stronger and more meaningful relationships with others. It will make you a stronger leader. My final piece of advice is to keep nurturing your love of learning. I developed my love of learning here at the Abbey. Be open and have the humility to believe that you can learn something from everyone you encounter, regardless of their educational experiences or background. In the past couple years I learned a tremendous amount from my graduate school professors at Columbia, but I learned even more from the young people I’ve taught, both in Arkansas and here in DC. Our nation and the world are in desperate need of men who are willing to use their privilege to lead with compassion, humility, and awareness of the obstacles facing those around them. Keep this in mind as you spend these next four years soaking in everything the Abbey has to offer. But, also, enjoy yourselves. This is a special place, and I’m sure you will always appreciate your time here. I know my class of ‘09 classmates and I certainly do. Congratulations, Form II, and the best of luck to each of you! ♦

As you all make the transition to the next four years, I have just a few pieces of advice for making the most of the opportunities to come: The first is to become the best listener you can be. One of the greatest skills I learned from my teachers, mentors, and the monks was how to be a patient and kind listener. To seek to understand what others have to say. There is a certain amount of privilege that comes with being young men, and it means that you will almost always have other people paying attention to what you have to say. However, you should be mindful of whether you are allowing the space for the women or the people of color in the room to have

fit in and also thought I wasn’t smart enough to be here. Listening to the conversations that the kids were having was fascinating and I thought, "how am I supposed to compete with that?" But with the support of my Abbey friends, family, and my teachers, I strived throughout the school year, with a few bumps and bruises along the way. I learned a lot of new information and gained life skills that will be useful now and later in life. I also learned that in order to be an “Abbey Boy” you just need to be yourself.

Form II Student Speaker MALACHI ROBINSON Hello friends, family, and faculty. My name is Malachi Robinson. My first experience at St. Anselm's was during a Shadow Day. I admit that I was really nervous. But from the moment I arrived, the environment was amazing. The hallways were quiet but not too quiet and I saw classrooms with teachers having fun teaching and students having fun while learning. All of the students and staff I met during my Shadow Day were warm and welcoming. As many of you know, this is my first year here. The first few weeks were tough, and I thought I wasn’t going to

Now, we are all here getting ready to transition and move from middle school to high school. Today is the last day that I may see some of you because you may be going to new schools. But no matter where you go, always remember to just be yourself and know that I, along with all of Form II, will miss you. And for those of you who are returning to the Abbey, I will see you in August. So, enjoy your summer break, be safe and have fun. To Mr. Crittenberger, Mr. Leathers, and all of the Abbey community who helped me and my mom in any way, thank you for the honor of being chosen to receive the 2019 Form II Headmaster’s Award. Thank you. ♦
