This Watermark is focused on the generosity of so many at Saint Edward’s School. On behalf of our entire school community, I extend our heartfelt gratitude for your generous support and unwavering commitment to our mission. Your contributions have profoundly impacted our students, faculty and the broader community, and we are truly grateful for your continued partnership.
This year has been a transformative period for our School. Thanks to your donations, we have been able to enhance our educational programs, providing our students with the tools and resources necessary for a holistic and enriching learning experience. From upgrading our Academic Learning Lab to expanding our environmental science, arts and sports programs, your generosity has touched every aspect of our students’ lives.
Moreover, your gifts have enabled us to invest in professional development for our teachers, ensuring they remain at the forefront of educational innovation. Our faculty members have attended numerous workshops and conferences, bringing back fresh ideas and strategies that directly benefi t our students’ learning experience.
In addition to these tangible improvements, your support fosters a spirit of community and shared purpose. It reminds us all that we are part of something bigger—a collective effort to nurture the next generation of leaders, thinkers and innovators.
Thank you for believing in our vision and for your continued support. We are excited about the future and look forward to sharing more successes with you in the years to come. Together, we are making a lasting difference.
With sincere appreciation,
Stuart Hirstein, Ed.D. Head of School
“We shape the future.” Saint Edward’s Vision Statement serves as an inspiring lens through which we view the daily experiences of our Lower School students. While this vision is reflected in countless ways, one of the most powerful tools we provide is the ability for students to find and use their voice.
Helping our students understand that their thoughts matter is an essential aspect of developing writing and communication skills in the Lower School. This journey begins with our youngest learners in Little Pirates, where they share a special item from home and provide three clues for their classmates to guess. This simple activity encourages students to articulate their thoughts and engage in active listening.
In PK 4, “Open Mic Monday” further amplifies student voice. Each Monday, a student has the opportunity to share whatever is on their mind—whether it’s a personal experience or something they find fascinating.
In kindergarten, they learn to craft clear and concise opinion statements, expressing their likes and dislikes about a topic or a book through writing and illustrations. The enthusiasm they bring to sharing their ideas is a testament to the importance of fostering early communication skills.
Our older students learn to confidently make claims on topics or texts, supporting their opinions with clear, well-reasoned arguments and carefully chosen evidence. Their reasoning is distinct and organized in a logical progression, ensuring clarity and cohesion. By fifth grade, our writers are honing their craft by incorporating precise language, metaphors and vivid imagery to convey their message effectively. They also experiment with varied sentence structures to set the tone and control the pace of their writing, adding depth and sophistication to their work.
In the Lower School, we cultivate not only academic skills but also the ability for students to express themselves thoughtfully and persuasively. From sharing simple observations in Pre-K to constructing complex arguments in fifth grade, our students develop a strong voice that reflects their growing confidence, clarity and creativity. By providing opportunities for them to engage with meaningful topics, we empower them to become thoughtful communicators who understand the impact of their words.
Middle school is a critical period for students as they build foundational skills, content knowledge and social competencies necessary for upper school and beyond. This unique time bridges childhood and adolescence, uniting learning across the Saint Edward’s campus.
Our students are talented scholars, athletes, artists and leaders. The middle school curriculum builds on prior knowledge while challenging them with complex concepts. Teachers design lessons that emphasize critical thinking and inspire curiosity and engagement. Opportunities through our wheel classes, arts curriculum and extracurricular activities encourage students to explore their passions, helping them discover new strengths.
One of the most remarkable aspects of our Middle School is the vibrant community. Students have numerous opportunities to form lasting relationships. Events like fall field trips, foc used on team building, teach students to collaborate and support one another in problem-solving. Our advisory and community time provide essential mentoring, guiding students as they navigate challenges and develop interpersonal skills.
This inspiring community of learners is poised for an exciting year, and we encourage you to engage with your student about his or her experiences both inside and outside the classroom. These middle years should not merely be a passage but a meaningful and enriching period of growth in our students’ lives.
JACK MACMULLAN, HEAD OF UPPER SCHOOL
It’s been a terrific start to the year in the Upper School! As is so often the case, the tone has been set by our seniors, the Class of 2025, who were officially handed the reins of leadership in our traditional Senior Commissioning Ceremony on September 6. We count on our seniors to serve as role models for the rest of our community, and they have not disappointed. Whether it is painting their parking spaces in late August monsoons, demonstrating their many talents in the classroom, field or stage, or walking hand-in-hand with their first grade buddies in the Halloween parade, these seniors have consistently proven themselves to be a creative, respectful, enthusiastic bunch. As of this writing, many are feeling the time crunch of college applications, as they apply to a wide array of selective institutions throughout the nation. Wherever the members of the Class of 2025 land, we know they will represent us well.
Grades 9 through 11 have followed the lead of our seniors, and have settled in well to the new school year. The class trips, held in late September, presented an amazing opportunity for these students to get to know their teachers and peers in a very different setting. They engaged in leadership-building activities such as low and high ropes courses; they visited the campuses of the University of Florida, University of Tampa and Rollins College; and they bonded over the joys of long bus rides and camp food. Rumor has it they even survived long stretches of time without their phones! These future leaders of our school continue to learn how to find the proper balance between fun and work and to discover and develop their own strengths and interests. We look forward to supporting them on their journey.
Lastly, I would be remiss if I did not highlight the work of our teachers. We are blessed with a talented group of educators who work really hard, care about young people, and consistently seek to improve at their craft. Yes, it’s about building knowledge and skills, but it’s also about building relationships. These professionals understand the critical importance of the work they do, and they do it with a smile. It is my pleasure to work with them, as well as our many outstanding students and families.
I hope to see you on campus soon!

In recognition of the 60th anniversary of the School, Saint Edward’s thespians staged The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee , one decade after its debut on the Waxlax Center for the Performing Arts stage. We thought it would be fun to share a “then and now” moment with some of the alumni actors and their current Pirate characters, so we asked them how they spell S-U-C-C-E-S-S .
Cassidy Layton, ‘15 (2014 Schwartzy): P-R-O-C-E-S-S
Cassidy is currently a successful artist in New York. She says, “My journey from Saint Edward’s to New York City has been both thrilling and chaotic, teaching me to embrace the process. I consider myself a full-time artist as a recurring character on the Apple+ show “Severance.” What they don’t teach in acting school is that landing the big role is just the tip of the iceberg. Success is fleeting, but learning to love the often confusing and challenging process of evolving as an artist is what truly lasts, which leads me to my big reveal: I’m not just an actor! I channel my artistic passion into running my own non-profit theater company, Divine Riot, which focuses on rock and roll theater by utilizing experimental work by both established and emerging artists—a space for taking risks. I’m also a writer; my musical Goliath had its first full workshop in NYC this year, and just this week my one-woman show was selected as a finalist to go up at a theater festival in Vermont. Interestingly, I’m also a Senior Design Lead at JP Morgan Chase, where I’ve come to love the digital design process and bringing my explosive creative energy into the corporate world, much to the bankers’ tolerance!”
Isabella Peters ‘27 (2024 Schwartzy): P-R-O-U-D
Success is when you put out everything you have to accomplish something and are proud of all of the work that got you to that final result.”
Karissa Mokoban ‘16 (2014 Mitch Mahoney): S-U-P-P-O-R-T
For Karissa, success means being able to financially support herself in a career she loves. After graduating with a Master’s in Public Health in 2023, she is currently an Infection Preventionist for the University of Miami Health System. Her career includes tracking hospital-associated infections and developing initiatives to prevent them, providing feedback to healthcare providers, and monitoring compliance with national infection prevention standards.
Lily Postlethwaite ‘31 (2024 Mitch Mahoney): S-T-R-E-N-G-T-H
“Success means using my brain power and showing all of my strengths.”
Saad Nooruddin ‘15 (2014 Chip Tolentino): R-E-S-I-L-I-E-N-T
Saad graduated medical school in 2023 and is currently a second year internal medicine resident in North Carolina. He says, “I would say that Chip would simply say ‘success, s- u- c-e -s- s… wait no, two Cs’.” But in all seriousness, in order to succeed you must be resilient and not quit until you have accomplished your goal. Many people will say a task is impossible because they feel they simply can’t do it. I feel that rather than think about the things we can’t do, focus on how we can make those seemingly impossible goals a reality. You simply need to have the will to keep trying and not quit until you have succeeded.”
Alex Mira ‘27 (2024 Chip Tolentino): G-R-O-W-T-H
“True success is learning and growing from the less than desired outcomes.”

COMMENCEMENT
Dear Saint Edward’s School Community,
It is my pleasure to thank the many alumni, parents, grandparents, friends, faculty and staff who made Saint Edward’s School a philanthropic priority during the 2023-24 fiscal year. Together we raised over $1.9 million in support of our operating budget, endowment and capital funds and special projects.
It is important that Indian River County has a top-tier school that is well funded, so it can provide wonderful facilities, an exceptional educational experience and tuition assistance for our students. As a donor, you should take great pride in knowing your gifts, along with the collective support of others, are helping hundreds of students a year experience the benefits of a Saint Edward’s education. The School’s fiscal health is excellent, and we hope you are inspired to continue your support for years to come. Thank you for making a difference.
With warm regards,
Kathy A. Savage Director of Development
A healthy endowment fund is a crucial element for independent schools. By continuing to grow our endowment we are able to support our culture of constant improvement. A strong endowment fund enables us to deliver high-quality education, support a diverse student body, and maintain our mission and values through various economic climates. It provides for long-term planning so that we can invest in facilities, programs and faculty without being overly reliant on short-term funding sources helps offset the cost of tuition, making Saint Edward’s more accessible to a broader range of students. The income generated from the endowment also provides for program enhancements, extracurricular activities and special projects. This enriches the overall student experience. Endowment funds also provide resources for competitive salaries, professional development and other benefits for faculty and staff, as attracting and retaining talented educators is crucial for maintaining high educational standards.
I n December 2023, The Academic Learning Lab Endowment was established by The Corrigan-Goddard Foundation, and we could not be more appreciative. The Corrigan-Goddard family is passionate about this initiative and what it means for our students’ success. Due to their generosity over the years, Saint Edward’s School is blessed to have two well-staffed learning labs that support the diverse needs of our community. This endowment fund supports the overall program with an emphasis on supporting faculty salaries , so we can continue to properly staff the labs and support our students.
In 2021, Sally and Hoyt Goodrich, grandparents of Harlan Swift ’12 and Sara Swift ’14 established
The Saint Edward’s Society Endowment. The Goodriches, in their desire to make the School’s financial aid program last in perpetuity, had this in mind when they established this fund.
At this time, we are committed to increasing funding to both The Academic Learning Lab Endowment and The Saint Edward’s Society Endowment.
If you are interested in supporting either of these funds, or any of the funds listed below, please contact Director of Development, Kathy Savage at 772.231.5192 or ksavage@steds.org.

In June 2007, with the blessing of Peter and Nancy Benedict, Saint Edward’s School established The Benedict Legacy Society. Through their unselfish commitment to the School as parents, leaders, headmaster and benefactors, Peter and Nancy have demonstrated an unparalleled spirit of life-long commitment and philanthropy to Saint Edward’s, for which we are forever grateful.
The Benedict Legacy Society was founded to honor Peter and Nancy and to recognize those individuals who follow the Benedicts’ example by providing for the future fiscal security of the School through their personal long-term financial planning.
Providing for Saint Edward’s School in your estate planning ensures that we can continue to thrive and provide a transformative educational experience for students for years to come. You can join this incredible group of individuals by becoming a member of the Society in a variety of ways.
• Including a bequest to Saint Edward’s in your will or trust is the easiest way to make sure that the things you value most about the School will endure and flourish in the future.
• Naming the School as a beneficiary on your life insurance policy or pension is a simple yet meaningful way to support Saint Edward’s.
• The IRA Charitable Rollover is a tax-wise way to support the School. Annual withdrawals from an IRA account, normally taxable, can satisfy your annual Required Minimum Distribution, and you can exclude these funds from your taxable income.
Always consult with your attorney before proceeding.
The Society recognizes alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends of the School who include provisions in their wills or estate plans to benefit Saint Edward’s School and who have informed the School of their generosity. Members of the Benedict Legacy Society are given a distinctive pin (shown above) that has become the visual identity of the society.

The Saint Edward’s Society is a remarkable community of individuals dedicated to changing lives through education. For over two decades this financial assistance program has been the driving force behind the dreams of over 120 bright young minds. With the generous support of Society members, the School can currently offer over $200,000 in additional financial aid to students in grades 6 through 12. Beneficiaries of the program have gone on to attend top-notch universities, and they recognize that this program has changed their lives.
On behalf of the students you have assisted, and the entire Saint Edward’s community, we thank the 2023-2024 Society Members.

Saint Edward’s School is a community and culture which promotes life-long learning by developing critical thinking, collaboration, and a thorough preparation for college and the future. Founded upon the Episcopal tradition, the focus is on the whole child, led by a strong faculty who work to help all students reach their full potential in the classroom and beyond.
Centered on a love for children, advocacy is an environment of mutually supportive and respectful relationships. As advocates in a compassionate community, we are purposefully committed to nurturing and championing each other and to bringing out the best in each individual. It is a way of life!
Ashley Shackelton
Ashley Shackelton is a passionate advocate for education, mental health and community development. She holds a BA in psychology from Dartmouth College (2005), and an MBA with a marketing specialization from NYU Stern School of Business (2010).

Outside of her professional and volunteer work, Ashley is an active parent with husband Chris, of four young Pirates: Alex, Maggie, Clara and Lily. Ashley is deeply committed to fostering strong communities, supporting mental health initiatives and promoting the next generation of leaders.
