Brian Wolf (Soccer) With 2 young boys, our family is on the soccer field 8 days a week! Seriously though, our family loves soccer. If you don’t find me in my work truck, you will find me on the soccer field. I own a landscaping business, Wolf Land Maintenance. We do local and regional landscaping. Residential & Commercial. Landscape design, retaining walls, mulch & rock, tree and shrub trimming, snow removal, and more. If I can answer any questions for you about soccer in St. Louis, especially the O’Fallon area, please reach out to me: Brian35w@hotmail.com

Pat Culiberk (Hockey) My wife Kathy and I are the proud parents of Kyle and Philip. Kyle is attending SIUE, and Philip is a recent graduate from Triad High School. Currently attending SWIC. The time goes too fast! I started volunteering as a coach in 1995 and have not missed a year since. Currently, I have the honor of serving as the Missouri Hockey Affiliate President. There are tremendous growth opportunities in sports for children: life lessons, self-discipline and creating friendships that last a lifetime. Now is a great time to get signed up for hockey. One website that can help navigate your initial path is The St. Louis Blues site, the Blues for Kids portion, has various “learn-to-play” opportunities. For players that are able to skate and are ready for a team atmosphere, you can go to www.mohockeyyd.org. Search there for the club your child is districted to (districts are determined by zip code) and use the contacts available on the clubs link to registered today. You can email me for more information at: Imontheice@hometel.com

Michele Weinfeld-Johnson (Baseball) I currently have 1 son playing high school and Select Baseball. He’s now 17, a senior in HS and has been playing since he was 4. My 23-year-old also started at 4 and played through HS. He played youth ball, HS Ball and Travel/Select ball, as well. I’ve been a baseball mom for 20 years straight. There were tears due to my boys’ personal disappointments, and celebrations for their personal and team accomplishments. Baseball provided some of the best times I’ve shared with both boys. My greatest knowledge of the sport is being a baseball player’s mom, but I have also learned the ins and outs of young boys playing the game: the commitment needed, rules, politics etc. Watching them play and being a part of a baseball team family have been some of my greatest pleasures. If you have any questions for me, please email me at: lmtbjohnson@aol.com.

EDITOR

Here We Go St. Louis, Here We Go! We are very excited about this new publication, STL KidsCompete! STL KidsCompete is a high-quality magazine and an interactive website, with an app that is under development. Our goal is to create a resource that will be useful for the athletes, their families, coaches, officials, and local businesses. This magazine focuses on our youth athletes instead of on professional or collegiate athletes, however many of our youth athletes aspire to be collegiate and/or professional athletes. We love that there are so many role models here in S. Louis!

STEPHANIE BERK, Ph.D. Stephanie Berk, author of “How to Potty-Train Your Dragon Child”, is a mother of 4 boys. She has a degree in Human Development & Family Studies from Cornell University, a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from University of Connecticut, a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Language Acquisition from Haskins Laboratory/Yale University, and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Neuroimaging from Washington University.

Have you noticed that St. Louis is ushering in a Golden Age of Sports? What with the Blues’ Stanley Cup win, the consistent support for the Cardinals, the Centene Community Ice Arena, the incoming soccer team, the new elite football team, POWERplex, the Chess Club, and the interest in youth sports, among other exciting avenues, this is the perfect time to celebrate our youth athletics! National studies are presenting data showing that parents are spending on average, $14,000 per year, per kid, per elite youth sport, making this the perfect time to give parents a high-quality resource to help guide them through the world of youth sports, fitness, nutrition, and good sportsmanship. The magazine will be available to readers via waiting rooms of gymnastics centers, dance studios, martial arts dojos, hockey rinks, soccer fields, Children's Hospital office waiting rooms, and other locations around the greater St. Louis area, including St. Charles, O'Fallon, and Wentzville, in addition to being online. Please help us make this the best possible resource by urging your school’s coaches to write articles, by submitting calendar items, and telling us what YOU want to see in this magazine!

Sportsmanship Steward

Be Realistic About Youth Sports It's no secret that participation in youth sports has become expensive. Between registration fees, league fees, competition fees, rental cars, hotels, and air travel, parents are being stretched more than ever before. Oh, how could we forget uniforms and equipment? You know, the stuff you actually need to play a given sport.

I

t can seem overwhelming sometimes. Select teams have evolved into traveling teams which have evolved into college exposure teams. Every one more expensive than the last. Every one promises to get your child closer to that elusive brass ring. Every one squeezes more blood from the proverbial turnip.

And parents make great turnips. What happened to us? How did things get so out of hand? Why do our 12-year-olds have hitting coaches, pitching coaches, strength coaches and mobility experts? Why are we paying for private lessons on top of all that? Is it really for a college scholarship? Multiply

the thousands of dollars you spend a year on sports for your child by the number of years they play through high school. Seriously, do it. The number most of us come up with is enough to pay for our kid's education ourselves - no scholarships, grants or loans needed. Coaches of yesteryear worked with kids in the evenings after work. Now, youth sports coaching and administration have become full-time careers themselves. As a parent recently told me, “I know I’m paying for more than my son’s participation. I’m paying coach’s mortgage and the note on his Escalade.” Few parents want to hear this and even fewer are willing to accept it, but top-level college and professional athletics are a genetic lottery.

They’re most likely not and that’s a tough pill to swallow but accepting this fact will save parents a lot of money and a ton of frustration and aggravation. This doesn’t mean quit your child’s chosen sport or pour cold water on their dreams. Be realistic, though. Children have more gifts than just their ability to run, throw, jump or catch. Encourage them academically. Use the same energy toward geometry that you do toward a jump shot. A change in perspective will do wonders for your sanity, your blood pressure and your bank account.

The top-ranked woman in the world at 15, in 1991, she became the first to earn the grandmaster title by norms and rating. Polgar won the Women's World Rapid and Blitz Championships in 1992, and the 1996 Women's World Championship which made her the first triple crown winner. Polgar won 12 Olympiad medals (five gold, four silver, three bronze) and led the U.S. to second place in 2004. More than 20 million children in the USA, between the ages of 6-12 participate regularly in an organized sport. Stopping Quitting Case Scenario: Jen, Dave, and their daughter, Reyna. Jen and Dave love playing tennis. They wanted Reyna to play tennis too, so that she would have a sport that she could play with them, and because it is great, life-long fun and exercise. When Jen told her friends that she was signing Reyna up for tennis, three of Jen’s friends also signed up for the 12-week session of weekly group lessons. After 3 weeks, Reyna told her parents that she didn’t like tennis and wanted to stop. Dave said, “You can’t quit! You just started, AND your friends are there!” Jen said, “You made a commitment, and we have already paid for the 12 weeks.”

N

ow is the time of year when children are learning their school year routines and after-school activities, e.g. a musical instrument, a sport, or a class. It is also just about the time of year when children are heard saying, “I want to quit! I don’t want to go.” Parents are faced with the dilemma of whether it is best to force the child to go to the activity, and if so, for how long. No one wants to lose money on the gear, uniforms, and lessons. Parents have been told to teach their children “grit”, and responsibility. The first problem is the word “QUIT”, which is a negative word. Using “quit” makes both children and adults feel guilty about the lack of success with the activity, and lazy or inadequate. While not intended as a direct, personal insult, telling a child that they are quitting something is often perceived by the child as s/he did something wrong. Researchers clearly suggest that the more a child is “put down” the worse the child feels about himself/herself, and the harder it is for that child to have a positive self-

12

SEP 2019

STL KidsCompete

esteem. Data from research also suggest that self-esteem is correlated with employment type and status in adults. While there is no intention to emotionally hurt the children, it can unintentionally happen, with long-lasting effects. With Reyna’s situation there is a choice of how to proceed. Perhaps Jen and Dave could use the word “stop” instead of “quit.” Saying to a child of any age, “Let’s decide how and when you are going to stop doing _________/tennis,” is much more accurate, and less harmful to the child than saying, “Why do you want to quit? You can’t quit yet. You have to finish the season.” The second problem is determining why a child wants to stop doing an activity. Three of the most common reasons are 1) the child has found something in particular that is too hard/scary in the activity, 2) the child simply does not enjoy what s/he is doing, and 3) The child is not very good at the activity, despite trying. Regardless of the child’s reason for wanting to stop, the following steps will help

Step 1:

Step 3:

Ask the child why s/he wants to stop the activity. Sometimes there is an easy solution, such as if the child says, “I get really tired.” You can try having the child go to sleep earlier, or packing an extra, high protein snack to be eaten before going to the class/practice. By communicating about the wanting to stop, the child is being taught that there are potential solutions to be tried before stopping. This is a good life skill to have, and also is a justifiable reason for getting a few more weeks in that activity.

Set a realistic and attainable goal so that the child finishes the activity on a positive note. For example, with Reyna, her parents could say, “You can stop tennis after you can hit 5 balls in a row.” This way, Reyna has a healthy goal to strive for and is not learning that when things are hard, she can quit/stop. If it is a particular part of the activity that is difficult, then upon being successful, the child will want to continue. However, if the child truly does not enjoy the activity, then the child will still want to stop, even after meeting the goal. At least in this scenario, Reyna finishes on an empowered note.

Step 2: Ask your child if there is something specific that is too difficult, and if so, why. Sometimes you will find that the child’s teacher or coach isn’t using a method that best fits your child’s learning style. This can be very frustrating, but may be fixable by either talking to the teacher/coach, explaining how your child learns best, or switching classes.

Hilton Honors: 20 stays, or 40 nights, in a 12 consecutive month period, gives you Hilton Gold Elite status with an 80% bonus on points, free internet and two bottles of water per stay. Using The Points Guy valuation this status could be worth nearly $1,300 in extra benefits. Each of these programs are free to sign up. These are just two examples of the many loyalty programs every hotel chain offers.

I recommend registering for these programs if you are staying multiple times at a particular chain. It may be worthwhile to sign up just for the free Wi-Fi which may save $15 per day. Another way to maximize hotel stays is to apply for a co-branded credit card. Many of these cards have no annual fees and offer bonus points for signing up. In addition, you may be able to obtain automatic status simply by being a cardholder. The accumulation of points and free hotel stays, plus the other daily benefits, make being a member easily justifiable. As a sports parent, we stay in hotels. We might as well take advantage of their offers and maximize every dollar we spend there.

Coach’s Corner

Minutes Matter — A Coach’s Perspective

16

SEP 2019

STL KidsCompete

As a coach, I have learned that while you can teach all the skills and technical elements of a sport, it is hard to develop that game awareness without actually playing the game. It is important, for young athletes, that they are gaining minutes on the field. For some this may mean playing at the JV level for an extra year. While this is hard for athletes to grasp, it is in their best interest for their development. Standing on the sidelines during a varsity game does not help with development.

Game awareness and readiness comes from playing experiences, the trials and errors. There tends to be a negative response from athletes who are placed on JV teams unless you are a freshman. For me, I would rather my athlete play 40-50 minutes at the JV level for 2-3 years and develop the required skills to PLAY at the Varsity level, than sit on the sidelines for the Varsity team and see little to no playing time. 40-50 minutes of playing time 2-3 times a week will allow for the athlete to develop their decisionmaking skills, enhance performance under pressure and truly allow the athlete to use the skills and technical elements learned in practice during a game setting. Yes, at the JV level the pace of the game may be slower and not as intense, but

athletes who need a little more time to develop than maybe some of their peers will excel under these conditions, build confidence and it will prepare them for that next level. Being an impact player on the JV team not only provides the individual with opportunities to develop their own individual skill but also puts them in a position to be leader their team. A quality that is important beyond the field of play A true athlete wants to play. But a young athlete’s expectations and perceptions may not align with that of their coach. It is important to have open conversations for both coach and player about progress, and what their end goal is.

Athlete’s Journal Patrick Unterreiner Webster Groves High School

Commit! by Patrick Unterreiner

I wake up three times a week at 4:00am, two hours before anyone else in the house has even moved. Once at swim practice, I then attempt to break my body down for an hour and a half, knowing full well that a day of soreness lies ahead. I know that I will be swimming for a two-hour block later in the day and that I am going to be spending eight hours at school and then possibly two to three more hours doing homework at home. But I do it all because I love the sport and am committed to it.

F

our years ago, before I started high school I didn’t want to commit to anything. I thought that everything that I was asked to do required too much work. This took the joy out of anything that I was doing. When I got to high school, I decided that if I was going to be forced to swim, I might as well try to be good at it. This is what made me start relishing the opportunity of being at the pool every day rather than dreading going to it. I saw each practice as an opportunity to improve, instead of two hours I would spend mindlessly swimming up and down the pool. As I sought to improve, my mindset of the sport changed. In my freshman year, I never would have imagined where I am now with the sport. Waking up at 4:00am was something I would only do if it meant a plane ride to some exotic location, never for some hour and a half long swim practice that I would detest. This all changed at the end of freshman year when I saw that I could succeed and actually made the conscious decision to switch to a team that forced me to wake up early to swim. It has instilled a work ethic in me and has shown me that some difficulty and pain is not a bad thing. Pain and difficulty can instead be something necessary for growth as a person. Succeeding never ever comes

18

SEP 2019

STL KidsCompete

without giving something else in return, whether that be time, focus, or pain. My coach likes to tell my team any day we are not performing to either his expectations or our expectations, that this is not the hardest thing that we will do in our lives. And he’s right; at the moment it may seem like what we're doing is incredibly difficult and feels to us as torture, but it is not even close to the hardest thing we will ever do — especially since my friends are there and working beside me. Though it may be difficult, it will prepare us for more difficult things to come by instilling discipline through effort. I think that committing to something that I am passionate about is very important as a teenager. It shows that I can set priorities, and it shows other people that I am a competitive person who wants to be better than others. I love competition, as it validates my efforts and proves that I am better than those around me, either in my resolve or ability. I think that one should always strive to be the best they can be in what they do because that is how you achieve success with anything. So sometimes I come off as a little too competitive, but in this world, you must be competitive in order to succeed.

Riley Oberman Ladue High School 10th Grade

Tough Transitions by Riley Oberman

For many people, a sport is something that can be played before, and in high school, as well as maybe even in college. Throughout this time, they can continue to excel at it and develop more skills. For me, gymnastics was only possible through eighth grade, then I had to stop competing when I went to high school. I no longer had the amount of time needed for practice, which added up to at least twelve hours a week. Once at high school, I wanted to find a sport that would fit me, but there was no school gymnastics club. Everyone else was choosing to try out for sports that they had been practicing for the past few years in middle school and maybe even elementary school. It would have been hard to be good enough, quickly enough, for me to make a high school team.

G

ymnastics, being such a unique sport, left me wondering what I could pick up easily using the skills I already knew. I started by trying cheer, I went to try outs, I made the team, but it just wasn’t my thing. Shortly after, I rushed into dive without knowing much about it, because I was desperate to have a sport to do all four years, and I knew that joining the dive team should be my best bet, given my tumbling background. Once I joined the team, it did not take me long to learn how to apply the skills I had learned in gymnastics, like my form and flexibility, to diving. Though there were many new aspects to diving, I was able to catch on. Normally diving is not a very popular sport, and teams consist of anywhere from zero to four divers, but my team had eight, with six of us being former gymnasts.

Though this meant less time on the board, I had a lot of experienced divers to learn from, which I truly felt helped me. By the time the first meet came along, I was able to be one of the divers to compete for Ladue. In the end, I would have liked to have done better, but I learned that my competitors, many juniors and seniors, had also been gymnasts before high school. Throughout the season I found this to be a pattern, and at the end of the season, I felt that I could continue with dive for the next three years. We had similar backgrounds, and there was a somewhat even playing ground. Using the skills I had developed in one sport gave me the tools I needed for another. I will likely try other sports as well, but with the understanding that each one I try helps me in other areas.

Hydrate Our Kids Part 1: Pre-hydration & Peri-hydration

Sufficient hydration is key to every activity. Dehydration can be overlooked because our body does not send warning signals until it’s too late. Thirst is actually a sign of dehydration can cause a decrease in their performance by at least 30%. Fluids also cools the body preventing heat illnesses such as fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and overheating. Pre-hydration and perihydration are important strategies to ensure young athletes perform to their highest potential. Pre-hydration (before activity) often times is, but should never be, overlooked. The benefit of drinking fluids before exercise reduces and delays the effects of dehydration. Depending on your child’s age, under 12yrs should have 4-8oz an hour prior and 4-8oz just before activity. Older ages, 13-18yrs need 8-16oz an hour prior and 8-12oz before activity. Peri-hydration (during activity) keeps the body cooled off and replaces water lost by sweating. This is a great opportunity to drink electrolytes or fluids containing salt, to prevent dehydration. The best time to encourage drinking is during breaks and sipping throughout training and competition. Under 12yrs, 5-9oz every 20 minutes. For ages 13-18yrs old, 5-10oz every 20 minutes.

It's about more than just winning. Buckingham helps St. Louis families build their financial playbook.

Easy ways to stay hydrated:

1. Water isn’t the only hydration source – most fruits and vegetable are 90-98%

water. Offer oranges, grapes, watermelon, cucumbers, and pickles as snacks.

2. Make homemade fruit popsicles – See this month’s recipe. 3. Gather reusable water bottles, have them cool and ready in the refrigerator. 4. Create a drink reminder chart on the refrigerator door or schedule reminders on your phone.

It is important for parents and coaches to work with sports dietitians as a team to establish hydration protocol that will consider the athletes’ training regimen, environmental factors, intensity, and availability of fluids. This addresses the extent of sweat loss and electrolytes (especially sodium) needs that are underrepresented as children transition through puberty. When our kids are supplied with sufficient hydration, they are bound to excel!

Sports Doc Writes

CONCUSSIONS IN YOUTH SPORTS:

When to Get Back in the Game Head injuries and concussions have probably become the most worrisome injury for parents – especially when their kids play contact sports. There are even laws under review in numerous states trying to limit contact (focusing mostly on football and hockey) at young ages in the hopes of preventing head injuries and the possible future consequences that may follow. Although the consequences of head injuries, particularly multiple head injuries, are still under debate, it is important for parents to know when it is safe for their child to return to sports if a head injury does occur.

STL KidsCompete

Signs & Symptoms of a Concussion Recognition of concussion/head injury on the sideline is the first step in keeping your child safe. Coaches undergo training to help them understand what to do in the event of a concussion, but if you as a parent have concerns, it is important to advocate for your young athlete. If after a hard hit or a fall during a practice or a game, your child looks slow to get up, complains of a headache, or isn’t able to answer simple questions from an athletic trainer, it is important for them to leave the game and be evaluated by a medical professional. “When in doubt, hold them out!” It is better to be more careful than less careful if there are any concerns. Any child with symptoms after a hit or fall should NEVER return to play the same day. Even with so many safety measures in place, we still see kids return to the game after a head injury that is likely a concussion. They are trying to be tough for their team or because of coaching pressure. This is never the right answer and it may prolong the course of their recovery. Symptoms of concussion can often evolve over the first 24-48 hours—meaning your child may have a mild headache after a game and then feel dizzy, fatigued, nauseated, etc in the days that follow. I always tell patients when I see them quickly after a concussion—it is going to get worse before it gets better. Young athletes need to be followed closely by an athletic trainer, primary care physician, or sports medicine doctor so that symptoms can be monitored to determine treatment plans and course of action for return to play. There is no definite time period that

an athlete should stay out of sports after a concussion. Every kid is different! Each athlete should be treated on an individual basis to determine when it is safe for them to go back. For some it may be a few days and for others it may be a few weeks to a few months.

When to Return to Sports A healthcare provider should be involved in determining return to sports. We don’t allow kids to go out and play in a game the first day back after a concussion. The return is gradual so that symptoms can be monitored and we can confirm your child is ready to go back. The bottom line is good education for coaches, parents, athletes, and physicians. Talk to your kids about concussions. Discourage “toughing it out” if they don’t feel well after a hit or fall during a game. It is always disappointing to come out of a game, especially a playoff or tournament game, but your brain will thank you for it! More information about concussions and talking to your kids about concussions can be found at https://www.cdc.gov/ headsup/index.html.

It’s so rewarding to see a child who has suffered a setback get healthy and back on the field. I have three kids of my own, who are now 2, 4 and 6. My husband, Jeffrey, and I love to spend our time away from work exploring the city with them. And when I’m on my own, I like to run and participate in obstacle course races — and cook and bake when I can! Athlete Development ages

13-18

BY BRANDONN S. HARRIS, PH.D., CC-AASP

Dr. Harris, a St Louis native, is currently the Program Director and Associate Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology at Georgia Southern University in the School of Health and Kinesiology. He is also a Certified Consultant with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (CC-AASP). His expertise and research interests are in the areas of youth sport, burnout, and ethics in sport and exercise psychology.

CURRENT TRENDS IN YOUTH SPORTS:

Suggestions and Guidelines for Parents With over 60 million youth involved in organized sports within the United States, a substantial number of children and adolescents have opportunities to benefit from the physical, social, psychological, and emotional benefits shown to exist from participating. Unfortunately, data also suggests that 1/3 of those youth drop out of sport annually, and 70% of youth athletes will drop out of sport by the age of 13. With several reasons accounting for this alarming percentage, it is easy for parents and coaches to be misinformed about aspects of their child’s involvement. Some may wonder how early is “too early” for their child to be involved in an organized sport and how much should they train. Others might be concerned about choosing qualified individuals to work with their child.

24

SEP 2019

STL KidsCompete

Sport Specialization Some children engage in what we refer to as early sport specialization, where athletes prematurely commit to one specific sport when they would benefit more from sampling different sports and activities (between 6-12 years of age). With early sport specialization, young athletes are at risk for burnout, decreased mood, anxiety, less enjoyment, and lower self-esteem. Increased risk for injury is also associated with early specialization as these athletes may have heavier, and often unbalanced, training loads beyond what their developing physiology is able to tolerate. Fortunately, recent evidences suggest that premature sport specialization before the ages of 13-15 does not appear to increase the likelihood for future athletic success regarding collegiate opportunities and scholarships. For example, the majority of athletes selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft played multiple sports in high school rather than specializing in only football. Members of the 2015 World Cup Champion U.S. Women’s Soccer team were also multisport athletes during their youth. So, children can have enjoyable and prosperous athletic experiences without investing prematurely in only one sport-related activity when there are physical, social, and emotional benefits from being involved in a variety of activities they find enjoyable.

Practice and Training: Is There Too Much of a Good Thing? Youth athletes can actually train too much. This, combined with a lack of rest and proper nutrition can lead to certain negative physical and psychological consequences. So, it is important to have qualified medical professionals and coaches with appropriate training working with youth, monitor young athletes during their practices and conditioning. Since every youth athlete is different in terms of their physical, social, and emotional development, their training should be appropriate for their current development. Some signs to be aware of if children and adolescents are being over-trained might include being physically and mentally exhausted, sleep problems, decreased appetite, irritability or mood changes, chronic muscle pain/soreness, recurrent injuries, difficulty concentrating, and a lack of interest or enjoyment in the sport itself.

Tips for Parents/Guardians and Coaches Children want their parents involved, but in the “right” way. Parental involvement requires a careful balance; being too involved or not involved enough has been associated with burnout, stress, and anxiety among youth athletes. Consider the following suggestions to help work towards supporting youth athletes so their sport experiences are positive and enjoyable. Ensure coaches and other professionals working with youth have been educated in the sport and possess proper credentials to work effectively with youth athletes. Information and resources for parents can be accessed among the leading organizations in this area including the National Alliance for Youth Sports (www.nays.org), the American College of Sports Medicine (www. acsm.org), and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (www.appliedsportpsych.org) Children cite “fun” as the number one reason for engaging in a sport; it is also the lack of fun which is the number one reason why they discontinue. Youth athletes have previously identified 81 elements associated with “fun” in sport. Surprisingly, “winning” was number 48 on this list; positive coaching, support, trying hard, and learning and improving were among the most important factors. Thus, parents and coaches should focus on providing support and encouragement, as well as opportunities for children to experience a sense of accomplishment relative to effort and personal improvement, not based only on winning or in comparison to others. Remember, keep it fun! Consider allowing youth to make decisions about their sport participation including what sports/ activities they choose to be involved in.

CURRENTLY: In 2015 a group of business partners decided to investigate the potential idea of owning the name St. Louis Steamers. The group included: Jason Glover, Doug Gum, Jim Thebeau and Tara Luhr. After much research, the group decided to legally own the trademark name and logo of St. Louis Steamers, and start a youth athletics soccer team..

HISTORY: The St. Louis Steamers played in the original Major Indoor Soccer League from 1979 through 1988. Their home games were held at the St. Louis Arena. The Steamers were popular for a number of years, with average attendance exceeding 12,000 for each season from 1981 through 1985, even outdrawing professional teams for four consecutive seasons!

In 2015 the St. Louis Steamers Soccer Club entered 1 team in SLSG Premier League in partnership with St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club. With the rich history of St. Louis Steamers and legendary All-Star Steve Pecher, (now Missouri Girls Director for SLSG) it seemed fitting to allow Steamers to play in the SLSG Premier League. After two years the St. Louis Steamers switched to the SLYSA league. Fast forward to 2019 and St. Louis Steamers have 38 teams and close to 500 players making it one of the larger clubs in St. Louis with plans to grow even more.

The Major Indoor Soccer League awarded St. Louis a franchise on July 31, 1979. The home opener on December 14, 1979 drew over 18,000 fans to the Arena. A large part of the Steamers' attraction was that their roster was drawn from local talent. The Steamers' popularity reached its peak during the 1981–82 season, when the team averaged 17,107 fans per game, including 19,298 fans in the Steamers' match at the Arena against the Denver Avalanche. In 1981–82, the Steamers won their second straight division title, and reached the MISL Championship finals, where they lost to New York in a five-game series. The team eventually dissolved in 1988. Ownership • Marvin Mann (1979–1980) • Stan Musial & Partnership (1980–83) • Thomas M. Bowers & Partnership (1983–87) • Bing Devine (1987–88)

PHILOSOPHY: The St. Louis Steamers Soccer Club has three pillars of Development: Development: (technical, tactical) Learn how to train Put like-players with like-players: Train to train together Compete at your highest level: Train to compete Each player is taken through various stages of player development. This experience encompasses athletic, technical, tactical, nutritional and social development. Some players will choose not to take this same path and our responsibility is to place those

players with individuals who have the same interests as they do. We train individuals and we rarely focus on the team aspect of development at the younger ages. We have adopted an organizational model that educates our coaches and motivates each coaching member to be actively involved with training sessions. Our coaches receive training information each week electronically. We educate our coaches with training content as well as overall soccer content.

SPEED SKATING

Speed skaters only go left! Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating, in which the competitors race each other in different distances from 111m–5000m on an oval track. There are 2 widely recognized types of speed skating: Long Track, and Short Track speed skating. In the Olympic Games, long-track speed skating is usually referred to as just "speed skating", while shorttrack speed skating is known as "short track".

34

SEP 2019

STL KidsCompete

A

n international federation for Speedskating was founded in 1892, the first for any winter sport. The sport of Speed skating is popular in the Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, China, Canada, U.S.A., Hungary, Germany, Russia, Italy, and Kazakhstan. Speed skates are different from hockey and figure skates. The speed skate blades go past the end of the skate, and the boots go to about the ankle. Short track skates have the blades fixed to the bottom of the boots in two places and are bent in a radius that allows the skaters to make tight turns on the track. Long track skates known as “clap” skates, have the blade affixed only to the front of the skate, which means that the skaters make a “clapping” sound when they walk. The clap skates help the skaters extend the push. For both types of skates, the blades are very sharp, such that the skaters wear cut-proof suits under their “skin suits”.

The competitive speed skating season for youth athletics in St. Louis, is roughly from mid- October through Mid-March, with 3 meets in Missouri, per season. Practice ranges from 1- 4 days per week, and 1- 1.5 hours per session. Getting started in St. Louis is easy, and affordable! There are speed skating “Learn-to-Skate” programs. If your child already knows how to skate, contact the club to try a practice. When the children are ready to compete, they are most often put in “ability” groups, such that they are competing against other skaters of similar ability, giving everyone a great chance to win! Speed skating in St. Louis is a rich tradition. We have numerous Olympians who make St. Louis their home. Fun fact: St. Louis has played a pivotal role in the development of the sport of Speed Skating!
