Dear Saint Louis Science Center friends, The word has been quickly spreading throughout St. Louis and beyond – The Discovery of King Tut is a must-see exhibition! More than 40,000 people have come to the Science Center to see this beautiful display of replicas of the treasure found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922. This November marks 95 years since the tomb was discovered, but the mystery of King Tut still fascinates people today. Who was the boy king? What was his life like? How did he die? The Discovery of King Tut sheds light on the details and theories about his life and death. World renowned Egyptologists have visited The Discovery of King Tut and say it is the best experience you can get outside of going to the actual tomb in Egypt. If you haven’t been able to see the exhibition, I encourage you to visit soon. The St. Louis region will have a front row seat for an experience of a lifetime during the Great American Total Solar Eclipse on August 21. The Science Center has been preparing for this remarkable event for months. In January, we introduced a new show at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium called Live Sky: Eclipse, which shares the science behind the eclipse and how to safely view it. You can check our website for show times at slsc.org. On August 19-20, the weekend leading up to the eclipse, the Science Center will host SciFest: Eclipsed, an event-filled weekend featuring activities for all ages and presentations by NASA experts, local astronomers and planetary scientists. Finally, if you are looking for a place to celebrate the eclipse on August 21, we will have activities throughout the day. Check our website for details. The fun will continue in the fall with many fun events and programs, as well as a new OMNIMAX® Theater film, Amazon Adventure. For details, check out this issue of NewScience (which is now available digitally) or visit our website for details. Thank you for your continued support of the Saint Louis Science Center. We hope to see you soon! Sincerely,

Bert Vescolani

Famed Egyptologist Bob Brier’s Tips from the Tomb Explore the recreation of Tutankhamun’s remarkable tomb and over 1000 iconic treasures exactly as they were discovered in 1922 by famed archeologist Howard Carter. Look for Dr. Brier’s insights at the exhibition.

Secrets of the Shrine

Rosetta Stone

This shrine is one of the largest pieces in Tutankhamun’s tomb– it almost filled the burial chamber. Inside it held multiple shrines and the stone sarcophagus and three coffins. Dr. Brier explains, “What I think is neat is that it was a kit that had to be assembled in pieces in the tomb because it was so big it could not fit through the door. Each piece was separate and included graffiti instructions to tell the workmen assembly instructions - it is kind of like a very early Ikea piece.”

The Rosetta Stone was key to deciphering hieroglyphs. Even though it looks like the stone was written in three languages it was actually written in two, Egyptian and Greek. According to Dr. Brier, “What made the Rosetta Stone so important was down at the bottom where it says it was written in the language of the priests, the language of the people and the Greeks. So it was clear the same words were written in different languages and that is how they deciphered hieroglyphs. “

STEM SPOTLIGHT

Dr. Wasit Wulamu, PhD Scientist-In-Action

Dr. Wasit Wulamu, associate professor at Saint Louis University’s Center for Sustainability, and his team are doing scientific research in our very own GROW fields! As part of a National Science Foundation-funded project, they are studying the effects of drought on corn and soybean plants. Using a specially designed robot, lovingly called “GROWbot,” they measure soil moisture and air temperature around plants. Dr. Wulamu’s research simulates the effects of a changing climate on our food supply and finds ways to address the challenges. The team uses special cameras mounted high above the ground or on drones to detect how drought affects plants even before farmers can spot the damage. These cameras can pinpoint sections of a fields stressed due to lack of water, sometimes narrowing the affected area down to the individual leaf. The goal is for farmers to someday use the science developed by Dr. Wulamu’s team to help manage drought on a much larger scale.

8 August • September

Throughout the growing season, Dr. Wulamu and his team visit the GROW fields for public demonstrations of their work with GROWbot and drones. “I like most the opportunity to interact with the public, talking about our research and why it’s interesting,” says Wulamu. He finds that working with the public helps him communicate his work to those who wouldn’t otherwise have access to it. “The Science Center is a great platform to fill this gap.” When not working on his research, teaching or attending scientific conferences, Dr. Wulamu enjoys traveling with his family and flying an unmanned aerial system that he built himself! Join us in the GROW Gallery to learn more about Dr. Wulamu’s work on Friday, August 4 and Saturday, September 9 from 10:30am–12:30pm. Rain Dates: August 5 & September 9.

Astronomy James S. McDonnell Planetarium Throughout the summer, YES teens enrolled in the Astronomy component could be found helping Science Center guests learn more about the total solar eclipse and living in space. Guests could be found with YES teens navigating The Total Solar Eclipse Exhibit and outside learning about solar eye safety. The teens also led hands-on work-out activities and games to show what it takes to stay physically and mentally in shape in space The YES teens not only developed new and innovative hands-on activities, they also visited other area attractions to focus on what it is like to be a guest and see how other educators engage with visitors. “The group really worked hard at both honing their communication skills to connect with guests along with truly understanding the science behind their demonstrations,” says Tim Mulhall, manager of Youth Development/Community Science.

YES Networking Event

On July 13, the YES Teens had the unique opportunity to practice communicating on a professional level and gathering career advice from an outstanding group of supportive role models and mentors during the 7th annual Youth Exploring Science Networking Extravaganza. The event was held at the Saint Louis Science Center’s Taylor Community Science Resource Center and attracted over 50 business and community professionals dedicated to helping the teens understand the power of networking. This year’s event was moderated by Candace Jarrett, a YES alumna, and included Dr. Hattie Jackson from the Science Center’s Board of Trustees, FBI Agent Matthew Brummund, Chef Eric McNeil from ArchYouHungry, LLC, engineer Nicole Adewale from ABNA, Dr. Will Ross from the Washington University School of Medicine, and a number of YES alumni who now have professional careers.
