President's Sidebar Dear Saint Louis Science Center friends, What an exciting summer! Thousands of people from St. Louis and around the country visited the Saint Louis Science Center over the summer and enjoyed The Discovery of King Tut, the OMNIMAX® Theater and so much more! One of the biggest focuses of the summer was the 2017 Great American Total Solar Eclipse. We have been gearing up for this event all year with a new show at the James S. McDonnell Planetarium, as well as an eclipse exhibit at the Planetarium and in the main building. Throughout the year, we achieved several milestones: more than 22,000 visitors attended Live Sky: Eclipse at the Planetarium; over 200 news stories included the Science Center when talking about the eclipse; nearly 1,000 children attended our eclipse field trips; more than 12,500 people attended SciFest: Eclipsed the weekend before the event; and we sold more than 51,000 pairs of eclipse glasses. The activities culminated on August 21 with an eclipse viewing party outside the Planetarium, where hundreds of people enjoyed activities, food and drinks, live music and, of course, a spectacular view of the eclipse. We also had a team on the ground in Festus, Missouri, which was directly in the path of totality, engaging the public at a large eclipse festival. This was a great example of the entire Science Center team coming together to support exciting experiences for our members and visitors. The Science Center is committed to providing the best experience for our guests, and developing our staff is integral to that. On September 7, we closed to the public for a professional development day for all staff and volunteers. Because our employees are so focused on guests when the Science Center is open, we felt that closing for one day would ensure that the training is efficient and inclusive of all. We explored topics like teamwork, diversity and technology, as well as how we can enhance our skills to best serve our visitors. This is an annual event that began last year. Also in September, we opened a new film at the OMNIMAX, Amazon Adventure. The film tells the story of Henry Bates, a young naturalist and explorer who risked his life for science in the 1850’s, enduring an 11-year journey through the Amazon rainforest. Bates’ research provided evidence of how species evolve, which Charles Darwin called “beautiful proof” for natural selection. Be sure to check out the film and the many related activities throughout the Science Center. In November, we will add a very exciting addition to the Planetarium: the Virtual Reality Transporter. Guests will have the opportunity to experience what space feels like with the VR goggles and 4D-effects. Innovation is key to studying science and technology, and this experience will be impactful for people of all ages as they pitch, elevate and roll as if floating through space. We are in the final months of The Discovery of King Tut, and I hope you will visit or return to see it again before it closes on January 7. Feedback on the exhibit has been outstanding. We will even have short, “spooky” tours available during Science Spooktacular on October 26, so make sure to bring your little scientists out for that! There is always something new at the Science Center, and we appreciate your support that helps make it happen! Sincerely,
Bert Vescolani

Amazon Adventure tells the epic, true story of naturalist and explorer Henry Bates’ fascinating 11-year journey through the visually stunning and biodiverse Amazon rainforest as a young man who risks his life for science in the 1850’s.
Filmed on location in the lush Amazon region, Amazon Adventure uses the immersive IMAX format to plunge audiences into a wild world of beauty, remarkable animal behavior and the fascinating journey of Henry Bates and his amazing story of peril, perseverance and ultimately success. Experience the compelling clues as Bates works toward his major discovery of the phenomenon of mimicry, in which certain animals adopt the look of others to help them deceive predators and gain an advantage to survive. He presented the first and best evidence of how and why species evolve, which Charles Darwin called the “beautiful proof” for natural selection. Get ready to be wowed by the mind-boggling examples of camouflage, which allows animals to blend in with their surroundings. Until they started moving, Bates was often fooled by their disguises. Bates made many other significant contributions to biology, identifying 8,000 species new to science.

Dr. Caitlin Kelleher, PhD Scientist-In-Action Computers are an essential aspect of daily life yet there are few opportunities for children to learn basic computer programming. Dr. Caitlin Kelleher, associate professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Washington University, is focused on increasing computer programming literacy for ages 10 and up. This past August she led two week-long summer camps at the Saint Louis Science Center to teach kids about computer programming by engaging them in animated stories.
outlets for creativity and draw connections to the importance of programming in everyday life. The campers followed basic programming and coding steps to create fun stories by selecting animations of interest that could be programmed to do anything from wave hello and have a conversation to break-dance and back flip. While the campers were creating their animated masterpieces, Dr. Kelleher and her team were researching how programming is learned and taught.
The campers used Looking Glass software that Dr. Kelleher designed to not only teach kids computer programming but also to help them develop problem-solving skills, find new

country or world as a whole, you’re not going to see all of the technologies that could exist. It’s in the best interest of the world’s perspective to have increased diversity in computing.” She was mentored as a doctoral student at Carnegie Mellon by the late Randy Pausch, an expert in human-computer interaction and the author of The Last Lecture. COMMUNITY Calling All Teens to Science Cafés Teen Science Cafés are a FREE, fun way for high schoolers in the St. Louis area to learn more about science and technology. All teens, ages 13-18, are welcome at any café. Each evening event features a stimulating presentation by a scientist, engineer, or inventor and hands-on activities. Past cafés have included the structure of cells, the science of sleep, and the use of GIS to map caves.
Spokes America’s STEM Workshop On August 9 YES teens had the unique opportunity to attend STEM workshops with a team of Stanford students from Spokes America. The team made a stop at the Science Center’s Taylor Community Science Resource Center along their 4,000 miles journey across the country to bring hands-on STEM workshops to diverse groups of students that are underrepresented in the tech industry. The YES teens appreciated the Stanford students’ passion for STEM education and the inspiring workshop activities including studying sheep brains, exploring computer science logic and doing geometric math challenges with the team. YES teen Vishnu Sivaprasad said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and appreciated the extra knowledge gained about a potential career in tech.”
All cafés are planned by the Youth Leadership Team. The team meets monthly for planning and even run the cafés. The Youth Leadership Team gains valuable leadership and communication skills while meeting real scientists and learning about the latest technologies. Youth Leadership Team applications are now open. Application deadline is November 1, 2017. Email kathleen.stevison@slsc.org to request an application form. Teen Science Cafés are sponsored by the Saint Louis Science Center, Academy of Science-St. Louis and Cahokia High School. For more information, call 314.289.4497 or visit teencafestl.wordpress.com.
