SPR ING 2019
This year is off to a great start at the Saint Louis Science Center. 2019 will be a big year of growth and change for the organization, with many great efforts to ensure that we continue to serve you, the St. Louis community and beyond, as one of the best science centers in the country. Late this summer, the OMNIMAX® Theater will close for several months while the projection system is converted from film to digital, including new audio and laser projection and a new screen. This is the largest update to the theater since it opened in 1991 and will allow the Science Center to greatly expand the number of new releases it is able to offer to its audiences, including periodic feature-length films. In addition, the theater will include new seats and a redesigned stage area for events and presentations. In order to accommodate construction, the OMNIMAX Theater is scheduled to be closed from August through November. To prepare for these updates, the OMNIMAX will be closed from April 23 through May 2 for construction as well. Prior to the temporary closure of the OMNIMAX, we have two brand new films opening that are sure to be popular. Superpower Dogs opens on March 15 and demonstrates the life-saving superpowers of extraordinary dogs. We will have some special guests at member night to introduce the film, so stay tuned for details! The film Volcanoes will open on May 17, telling the story of the earth’s creation and the contribution of volcanoes to the great wildlife ecosystems and their impact on humans and the world. The OMNIMAX film Volcanoes complements our largest exhibition for 2019, POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION. This remarkable exhibition features more than 150 artifacts excavated from the ruins of the city of Pompeii, on loan from the Naples National Archaeological Museum, as well as body casts of the victims of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. This incredibly moving exhibition will transport visitors back in time to see what the ancient Roman city was like prior to the volcanic eruption, experience the eruption in a 4D theater and see and learn about how the remnants of the city were preserved by the very disaster that destroyed it. POMPEII will also open on May 17, and we hope you will make plans to experience this historic exhibition. We kicked off the year with the opening of GUITAR: THE INSTRUMENT THAT ROCKED THE WORLD in January, and it has been very well received in the community. One of the highlights, which you can see later in this issue, is a guitar on loan from Chuck Berry’s collection. The exhibition closes on April 14, so please make sure you don’t miss it! Again, this year will mark a lot of growth for the Saint Louis Science Center, and we appreciate your support as we continue these efforts to serve you and our community. Sincerely,
Barbara Boyle Interim President and CEO, Chief Operating and Financial Officer

FIRST Robotics Competition Friday, March 15 & Saturday, March 16 Chaifetz Arena at Saint Louis University | FREE and open to the public
Experience the excitement of sports with the rigors of science and technology at the 2019 St. Louis Regional FIRST Robotics Competition. This multi-day event brings regional teams of high school students together for the first level of competition that will culminate in the national FIRST Championship at the end of April. Since 2002, the Saint Louis Science Center has been the major educational partner for the FIRST Robotics Competition, managing the all-volunteer committee that plans the event. “The FIRST Robotics Competition program provides an important avenue for the Science Center to reach high school students with our mission to ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning,” says Paul Freiling, director of Emerging Technologies. “This competition encourages students to pursue careers in engineering and technology, and also inspires self-confidence, leadership and life skills.” The challenge begins the first week in January when the game is revealed to each team. Teams are then given standard robotic parts, a common set of rules, and six weeks to design and build a robot. Local engineers help guide the teams as they design and build their bots. “The FIRST Robotics Competition offers an unprecedented opportunity for the students to work closely with science and engineering professionals and learn about potential career choices through hands-on experience,” says Freiling. FIRST teams are recruited from diverse settings including small private schools and inner-city public schools. Often, teams represent one school; however teams can also be comprised of multiple schools within a school district or geographic region. In 2019, the FIRST Robotics Competition will reach nearly 100,000 high school students representing more than 4,000 teams competing worldwide. LEARN MORE | VISIT stlfirst.org

Portal to the Public
DESTINATION: DEEP SPACE presented by The Boeing Company
The Saint Louis Science Center is a proud member of the Portal to the Public Network. This national network is comprised of more than 50 science museums, zoos and botanical gardens focused on connecting the public to current science in their community. The Portal to the Public training workshops presented by the Saint Louis Science Center offer targeted communication activities specifically developed to help scientists more effectively communicate their research and expertise to the public.
Preparing Scientists to Connect with the Public
Two alliances compete to collect samples on Primus, a planet with unpredictable terrain and weather patterns that make remote robot operation essential to the mission. With limited time until liftoff, the alliances must gather as many cargo pods as possible and prepare their spaceships before the next sandstorm arrives.

Currently, Dr. Matthew Lew, assistant professor of Electrical and Systems Engineering at Washington University students from his lab and from Spectra, a student-led imaging society at Washington University are attending Portal to the Public workshops. Dr. Lew and his lab are researching new ways to see what happens inside cells—things so small that they cannot be seen with a microscope. To be able to see what is happening inside the cells, Dr. Lew is developing nanoscale imaging that is one thousand times stronger than a microscope. Nanoscale imaging has proven to be an invaluable tool for a multitude of health-related research applications. “The Science Center is a great resource for connecting scientists to the public, and Portal to the Public trainings have helped us become more effective communicators of our work,” says Dr. Lew. He also noted the significance of connecting the public with scientists: “It is important that everyone has access to knowledge to inform their perspective.” Dr. Lew and students from his lab will be showcasing their communication skills and nanoscale imaging research at the Scifest: Health Expo later this fall. Congratulations to the YES Class of 2019! The Youth Exploring Science Program (YES) program is proud to celebrate the 20th anniversary graduating class of 38 teens. The YES program has a successful legacy of working with teens from underrepresented communities throughout their high school years to increase their interest in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics (STEAM).
Starting in their freshman year, YES teens devote many hours on weekends and throughout the summer to attending the four-year program. The program emphasizes experiential learning through a full-range of STEAM components and the development of real-world skills needed for a successful transition into higher education. “We are very excited for our 20th anniversary class of graduates and inspired by their many achievements and personal growth.” says Siinya Williams, senior director of the YES program. “They have worked hard both academically and on developing critical college-ready skills that will lead to their success as the next generation of scientists, engineers and problem-solvers.”
1136 YES teens have graduated from the program since 1997 20

Thanks to a grant from The Boeing Company, the Youth Exploring Science (YES) Aerospace component has a full-size RedBird Flight Simulator. “The Boeing grant has changed the face of what we can offer here at the YES program,” says Tim Mulhall, manager of Youth Development for Community Science and YES Aerospace educator. “It represents a huge leap forward in experiential learning for the teens.” The YES teens will not only have the ability to learn how to fly, but they can also accumulate hours toward a private pilot’s license. The SD simulator has eight screens to simulate the actual cockpit of a Cessna 172 aircraft. This allows the instructor and student to look fully left and right and actually view the environment as if they were taking off from a runway, flying in the air and landing. “The new simulator will also be an outstanding tool for our community outreach and engagement, serving as a potential academic outlet for area aviation flight schools,” says Mulhall.
