Connect with curiosity. Dear Saint Louis Science Center Friends, I am honored to begin this journey as president and CEO of the Saint Louis Science Center. In my first month in this role, I have learned how important our members are to us. Your support helps us to bring science literacy and learning to the St. Louis community and beyond. We live in a world where change is so rapid. STEM is at the center of much of this change, and as a leader in STEM education, we have a responsibility to foster the talents and key skill sets of our current and future leaders. You are crucial in our mission “to ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning.” This year has been great at the Science Center. POMPEII: THE EXHIBITION welcomed more than 136,000 guests. We are on pace to welcome more guests in 2019 than we have in a single year since 2007. In fact, this past September was the largest attendance for the month of September since we began keeping records in 2004. It is thrilling to welcome this many into this great place. There are many exciting things happening at the Science Center. The OMNIMAX® Theater is reopening after its largest renovation since it opened in 1991. The projection system has been converted from film to digital, featuring IMAX® with Laser. We have made many other upgrades that will create a state-of-the-art, more comfortable viewing experience for our members and guests. In addition to the improved experience, we are also able to show a much wider variety of documentaries and more feature-length films. You can read more about it later in this issue of New Science. We hope you will have the opportunity to enjoy a show at the OMNIMAX soon. The Science Center is geared up for a great 2020. We are excited to open Da Vinci The Exhibition on January 11. The exhibition is a hands-on examination of Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci’s life, research and art. Da Vinci was a master of innovation, which is integral to exploration, discovery and STEM, so we are thrilled to share this exhibition. Our Makerspace gallery is a Science Center forum for invention, trial and error and innovation, so look for a Makerspace tie-in to da Vinci as well. More details on Da Vinci The Exhibition are provided later in this issue. As I get to know the Science Center better, I am particularly looking forward to getting to know you, our members. I hope you will be able to join us at one of the upcoming member events. I’d love to hear your ideas and feedback on how we can continue our Science Center’s role as one of the best science centers in the country and pave the way for future generations in STEM. I’d like to close by reiterating how meaningful your support of the Science Center is. Your contributions to the Science Center, through membership and beyond, make it possible for us to connect our guests and community to science every day. Imagine how awesome it would be if the learning experiences we provided ignited her or his interest in STEM at the Saint Louis Science Center. Wishing you a safe, happy and healthy new year.

.

Sincerely,

Todd President and CEO

Science Center welcomes new CEO Todd Bastean

Ignite Their Imagination As we look to the new year, the Saint Louis Science Center continues to seek unique experiences that ignite a lifelong interest in STEM by featuring special exhibitions like Da Vinci The Exhibition and new opportunities for discovery by renovating our OMNIMAX® Theater. You, our valued member, provide us with important feedback and information as well as challenge us to create programs, events and exhibits that resonate with you and the community – and, of course, our youth. With your help, the Saint Louis Science Center continues to empower young people to be curious about the world we live in and understand that their own intellectual curiosity can lead to the discoveries and advancements of tomorrow. We look forward to your continued support as we look to the future.

On October 2, the Saint Louis Science Center announced Todd Bastean, former president of Bunge North America, as our new President and CEO. One week later, Bastean officially started his new position and assumed leadership from Barbara Boyle, interim President and CEO for the past year. “It is a great honor to join the Saint Louis Science Center and contribute to its continued growth,” said Bastean. “The Saint Louis Science Center is a nationally recognized institution we should all be proud of.... I look forward to working with such a gifted team and helping the Science Center reach its greatest potential.” Along with leading the Bunge team since 1994, Bastean has been an active community volunteer, serving on the Saint Louis Science Center Board of Trustees for the past three years and on the advisory council for The Yield Lab. A native of Quincy, Illinois, Bastean holds a B.S. degree in accounting from Western Illinois University. He has been a St. Louis resident for 25 years. He and his wife, Kim, have two grown children.

COMMUNITY

YES Teens participate in local and national competitions St. Louis Area Brain Bee Late January/Early February Youth Exploring Science (YES) Teens will be participating in the St. Louis Area Brain Bee (SLABB), a high school competition that focuses on neuroscience. This year, the Science Center will host tutorials at the Taylor Community Science Resource Center. The competition, hosted by Washington University in mid-February, begins with a formal, timed test that has participants answer questions from the Society of Neuroscience publication “Brain Facts.” Top performers move on to a spelling-bee type challenge in which a winner is selected. Participants will also do handson activities focused on the latest research and technology in neuroscience.

FIRST Robotics Tech Challenge The FIRST Robotics Tech Challenge is a competition for high school students with a focus on robot design, fabrication and strategy. This year YES is fielding two teams who will design and build robots while documenting their team’s journey. YES teens have the opportunity to develop STEM skills and practice engineering principles, while realizing the value of hard work, innovation and working as a team. The season kicked off in early September, and competition could go as late as April depending on the teams’ advancement. There are also non-official events at the Taylor Community Science Resource Center where other local teams strategize, hone their skills and make use of the resources of YES Engineering’s Makerspace.

YES Open House On Wednesday, October 16, the Taylor Community Science Resource Center hosted an Open House event that gave community leaders and Science Center donors the opportunity to learn more about the nationally recognized YES program. Educators and YES teens were onsite to proudly demonstrate current projects in the seven STEM topics and entrepreneurial components studied in the program. The YES program actively prepares participants to join the STEM workforce by focusing on hands-on learning with realworld applications that encourages the creative and critical thinking skills necessary in the 21st century economy.

In our ever-changing world, it’s more important than ever that our nation’s youth are prepared to solve the complex global challenges of the future and this begins with STEM education. Our mission is vitally important to the economy of St. Louis, Missouri and the United States, which is falling behind other nations in producing a STEM-educated workforce that will drive important innovations. National studies have projected the employment in STEM fields will grow almost twice as fast as other fields. Please consider investing in science this giving season. With your help, we can continue to encourage our youngest generation to imagine the profound impact that they can make on the world we live in by exploring what science makes possible. #GivingTuesday (YES program) The 21st century economy requires a workforce that is fluent in STEM. Our Youth Exploring Science (YES) program works with local students to prepare them for careers in STEM fields. YES has transformed the lives of young people in our community by connecting them to STEM professionals and hands-on projects that focus on college and career readiness. Help us continue inspiring students to explore STEM professions. Learn more at slsc.org/givingtuesday
