Africana Studies Minor Program The Africana Studies minor focuses on the interconnected historical, cultural, artistic and political forces of African-American, Central and South American, African and Caribbean peoples. The interdisciplinary minor in Africana Studies utilizes its own specialty courses and courses from Anthropology, Business Administration, Education, Economics, Fine Arts, History, Latin American/Latino Studies, Mathematics, Political Science, Sociology, Theology, Urban Studies, and Women’s Studies to provide students with a foundation for understanding the historical underpinnings of current events involving people of African ancestry. The program compares cultures within Africa as well as in the diaspora. Our focus is both national and international. Africana Studies welcomes students of all ethnicities to think critically about the function of race within individuals, institutions and societies, and simultaneously facilitate heightened awareness of issues surrounding social justice and community/service. Our interdisciplinary approach attracts students from a variety of majors from the sciences, humanities and social science. Minoring in Africana Studies will better prepare you for a variety of careers. You will be combining this minor with your major, giving you a broader foundation for what you offer the world. Perhaps the greatest skill you will acquire with this minor is an in-depth understanding of one group in the context of a complicated world. This comprehension makes you more qualified to fit into the 21st century, no matter what path you chose.
