Data Science The B.S. in Data Science program provides an undergraduate option for students wishing to pursue and/or advance careers in the data science field and joins the M.S. and Ph.D. programs to provide full expertise. Students will learn about enterprise data analytics, apply analytic techniques and software to interact with data, evaluate methods of data and analytic modeling and apply analytics to support data-driven business decision-making. You will also gain skills in programming, cloud computing, machine learning, and business analytics, allowing them to pursue certification in Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and IBM Data Science Professional. The Institute previously solely offered master’s programs in data science, business analytics, marketing science and cyber security. These latest programs will significantly expand offerings for current and prospective students in the rapidly growing fields of analytics and data science. The Institute is currently comprised of the fastest growing collection of academic programs in the Frank J. Guarini School of Business and has tripled its enrollment since 2018.

Learning Goals and Objectives • Prepare students in addressing complex issues and by following a “learn-by-doing” pedagogy. • Develop in-depth understanding of the principal tools and techniques in data science and business analytics, including data mining, predictive modeling, visualization techniques, and complex statistical analysis. • Understand the ethical issues and implications in data science, including informed consent, bias, access, and data privacy. • Gain practical, hands-on skills by applying data science skills and concepts in experiential projects and research, and effectively interpreting and communicating results. • Every student to participate in an internship to apply the skills acquired from the course to a real-world job experience. • Acquire skills that employers are looking for to hire, so students are ready on day one for the job.

Graduates of this program will be able to: • Become a skilled Data Scientist with knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs), ready to work in industry or to pursue a Master’s Degree. • Demonstrate mastery of skill in analytical tools, programming languages, and machine learning to include R, Python, SQL, Database/Cloud technology, and Tableau. • Evaluate legal & ethical issues to promote corporate social responsibility. • Use specialist software tools for data storage, analysis and visualization. • Consider and recognize cultural needs, so that data science solutions can serve a wide array of diverse individuals. • Determine how data science innovations and outcomes impact society. • Conduct research/investigation to solve practical problems.

Microsoft Academic Initiative The Data Science Institute is experiencing exponential growth, which has allowed us to roll out new initiatives for our students that will streamline and enhance your learning experience. In order to better prepare you for the evolving Data industry we're kicking off our Microsoft Academic Initiative, meant to standardize the technical aspect of studies at the Data Science Institute. All of our new, incoming students will be equipped with a Microsoft Surface Laptop Go with all pre-installed applications needed to complete your coursework with ease.

You have access to these pre-installed programs: • Anaconda • PostgreSQL • Microsoft Visual Studio Code • Microsoft 365 & Microsoft OneDrive • Tableau Prep Builder/Tableau Desktop • Git & Github Desktop Deployment Tool And access to Microsoft Azure, a cloud computing service which offers you: • MySQL access • Databricks • Spark • Cloud • Machine Learning • Python Notebooks/Pipeline scripts

Data Science Career Growth According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (2021), the job outlook for data scientists and those in related fields is projected to increase by 15 percent between 2019 and 2029—a growth rate that is much faster than the average growth rate of four percent for all other occupations. According to Glassdoor (2021), data scientists have a median base salary of $113,736 per year, one of the highest in the nation. Machine learning engineers have a median salary of $104,837. These salaries are for all individuals—most being master’s degrees prepared. Those with an undergraduate degree are likely to enter this market boom and have a successful career growth. Graduates will be equipped with the skills and knowledge for many potential career paths: • • • • • •

Studying the World More than 20% of Saint Peter’s students choose to take part in credit bearing travel courses in India, China, Cuba, and many other areas of the world. For many students, this is an opportunity to expand their horizons beyond their own experiences. For all students, study abroad trips help shape awareness of the world in which we live. Not an experienced globe trotter? That’s OK! Faculty plan short-term study courses.
