Chemistry The chemistry major at Saint Peter’s University offers a strong background in all traditional areas of chemistry: analytical, physical, inorganic, organic and biochemistry. Chemistry students are prepared for careers in the chemical and chemistry-related industry, graduate school, or a career as a teacher. Students can also pursue a course of study with an emphasis in Education, Medicinal Chemistry, or Forensic Science.

Medicinal Chemistry Major For students looking to enter the pharmaceutical field, Medicinal Chemistry is the major for you. Medicinal Chemistry focuses on organic and analytical areas to complement chemistry courses. Students will learn about drug design, mechanism of action of drugs, classes of drugs, and modern methods of synthesis.

Forensic Science Concentration What does it take to crack a criminal case? More often than not, it’s forensic evidence gained through meticulous testing done in the lab. The forensic science concentration gives students a comprehensive and in-depth study of forensic science that prepares them for careers in forensic science or other natural science or, for education at the graduate level. This concentration has been developed to meet the criteria set by the New Jersey State Police and other law enforcement agencies for a position as a forensic scientist.

Tech and Tools SPU students are exposed to lab techniques and instruments that are seen in the real world including: • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) • Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) • Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) • Atomic Absorption/Flame Emission (AA/FE) • High-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) • Ultraviolet/Visible Spectroscopy (UV-Vis)

Education Minor The chemistry major with an education minor prepares you to teach science in grades 7–12. The field-intensive curriculum allows students to complete both a bachelor’s degree and all coursework for middle and high school teacher certification.

Learning Opportunities Undergraduate Research

Thinking About Graduate School?

Students can complete undergraduate research with one of our faculty in areas impacting medicine and renewable energy. These research projects give students the opportunity to be published in scientific journals and present at regional conferences.

The faculty, support staff and STEM center are dedicated to helping students navigate the application process to professional schools including: Pharmacy, MD, PhD and MS programs. Our students have gone on to grad school at prestigious universities like Montclair State University, Rutgers University and New York University.

Internships Through our diverse network of employer and community partners we connect students to paid internships and professional opportunities, and assist them in obtaining gainful employment. Some of our students have interned at companies like Symrise, Liberty Science Center, Sensient Cosmetic Technologies and more.

STEM Grants TREX Grant The TREX program is an opportunity for students in STEM majors to be in a paid internship program that also counts for academic credit. Selected students receive up to $1,500 while participating in an unpaid internship, opportunity for resume-boosting hands-on-experience and a multiple mentor network to support them during the internship application process and beyond.

INVEST Scholars Program Want to teach science to the next generation of students? INVEST Scholars Program prepares SPU students for a teaching career through partnerships with high need school districts. Selected students can receive up to $20,000 in scholarships in their junior and senior years. INVEST Scholars also participate in a paid four-week summer Immersion Program, work alongside a math or science professor as a learning assistant and have opportunities to work as a tutor in high-need school districts.
