Psychology A psychology major is an asset — whether your career goal is to become a clinical psychologist, counselor, social worker, or consultant; to conduct behavioral research; to be a college professor; or to enter industries like business, law or medicine. Your expanded knowledge of human thought, emotion and behavior is relevant to any career. Our students leave our program with a Bachelor of Science rather than a Bachelor of Arts. This means that the degree is primarily based in math and science. The program is research focused with many opportunities for student and faculty research collaborations. We typically bring about 30 students a year to the annual meeting of the Eastern Psychological Association where many of them actually get to present research that they have done with faculty members in the department.

Concentrations Clinical Psychology Focus on how psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Prepare for a career in clinical or counseling psychology by gaining in-depth knowledge of normal developments, psychological disorders, psychological theories, and treatment techniques.

Industrial-Organizational The Industrial-Organizational Psychology (IO) concentration is a good fit for students planning to attend graduate school in IO or a related field like organizational behavior or human resources management. Students considering a career in business may find this concentration useful for careers in training and development, human resources and management.

Forensic Psychology The Forensic Psychology concentration is designed to supplement the study of psychology, criminology, or other justice-related areas with an overview of the intersection of psychology and the criminal justice system. The concentration focuses specifically on mental illness in the criminal justice system, the psychological experiences of the victims, psychological science in the courtroom and psychological factors related to criminal behavior.

Research The Psychology Department research facilities feature top of the line technology so students can dive into research. Facilities include a virtual reality lab, a social experimental lab with a focus on cheating behaviors, cognitive lab that looks into unconscious memory processes and bilingual research, and equipment that can measure physiological responses of participants. There is even a lab that studies political and moral beliefs and another that examines cross-cultural differences in mother/daughter relationships.
