BACK TO SCHOOL

BUILDING FINE YOUNG MEN.

ONE BOY AT A TIME.

WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR.

I hope that the Summer Break has been a wonderful time for you and your family.

A unique aspect of schools is that each year we get to start fresh. It is quite unlike most other organizations. With schools, for the most part, the last year is finished and this year stretches out ahead untouched, with all possibilities available. In fact, the lengthy summer can amplify that sense of newness and fresh starts.

Many aspects of this yearly rhythm can be advantageous for boys — not all, but many. It allows them the opportunity to think of goals within a timeline that is more manageable and motivating for the growing brain — trying to consider goals five to ten years out is really hard for most boys to grasp so focusing on setting goals in one-year chunks is much more inspiring.

We want our boys to be ambitious and bold in th things they try. The likelihood of them jumping fully into those opportunities one year at a time is much more feasible.

As we arrive at the start of this new school year and look at the blank page called the 2024–25 school year, once again, there is a fresh opportunity for your son to commit to big goals, try new things, and develop himself in new ways. The previous school year is finished. His successes from that year are done, and it’s time to reach for new challenges. His failures are also behind him so he should let them go. He can learn from them but should not be shackled to them as that was last year.

And no doubt your son will experience new successes and failures this year, in equal measure. We want him to embrace all of them as they are the ingredients for growth and forward momentum.

We seek to intentionally create a pathway for a boy to grow towards being a good man. The summer pause and the fresh possibilities of a new school year, in a community that cares for him and encourages him to once again take risks and challenge himself, provide an important landscape where he can continue on his journey toward becoming a fine young man.

I wish you all the best for the 2024–25 school year!

Sine Timore Aut Favore.

GREETINGS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL

Dear St. George’s Families,

Welcome back to another exciting year at St. George’s School! I hope this letter finds you and your loved ones in good health and high spirits. The 2024–25 school year is ahead of us and full of promise. The dawn of each school year represents new beginnings and inspiring possibilities and this is particularly true for this upcoming year. We are tremendously excited to see the return of the historic Wings to the Senior School. It is going to be a great deal of fun to watch how spirited competitions between the boys of Clark, Fell, Tupper, and McDougall bring additional energy and community engagement among all of our students.

As I enter into my second year as Senior School Principal, one key observation from year one that I am carrying forward is the realisation of just how much passion and pride exists for St. George’s School among all of the members of our community. From our students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni, our School means a great deal to all of us. I find this to be empowering as we all continue to work together with the goal of providing a school experience that is second to none for everyone in our community.

Schools and parents have a shared ambition to empower children with knowledge, values, and skills that will serve as their compass in navigating the world beyond these halls. As the new school year starts, I like to recommit to this ambition, in concert with you, and look ahead to all the opportunities that we have planned to motivate and engage your children.

Learning is an adventure, one that sparks curiosity, and our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to creating a dynamic and engaging environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and a love of learning. Our Academic Program will always be the foundational pillar of the St. George’s School experience. We also recognize that learning transcends the classroom and is the culmination of each child’s comprehensive experiences at School. Whether it is exploring the outdoors, athletics, visual arts, drama, music, or a myriad of other co-curricular activities, we will continuously strive this year to provide a depth and breadth of opportunities for each of our boys to challenge themselves and experience noteworthy moments of success and fulfilment. We also hope that enthusiastic descriptions of these various experiences make their way home so that families feel intimately connected to daily life at School.

The following document provides details about school start-up, including the Academic and Student Life Programs. As always, please check the website and read the weekly Saints eNews to stay informed about all the amazing activities and events going on at the School. The “My Resources” page of the website is also a helpful tool as it provides invaluable information about the policies and routines of the School.

Here’s to an enriching and fulfilling year ahead! Thank you for your unwavering support and trust in St. George’s School. Together, we will strive to nurture young minds, building fine young men who are becoming ready and relevant to help transform the world for the better.

Kindest regards,

CONSTRUCTION AND NEW SCHOOL UPDATE

We are very excited about the construction of the new Senior School! The southeast corner of the Senior campus continues to be an active construction site and the current safety procedures will remain in place through the completion of the buildings. We will continue to minimize disruption to the daily school routines, and as firm dates are established, we will communicate the move to the new building.

DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP

With our new buildings nearing completion, parking, bus, and drop-off/pick-up areas will be adjusted on an ongoing basis. We strongly encourage all students to take the bus, cycle, or walk to school. If your son must be driven to school, please drop him off a block or two away (eg. Chaldecott Park) and have him walk the final distance. Limited drop-off/pick-up space is available on the west side of Camosun between West 28th Ave and West 29th Ave, and on the south side of West 29th Ave, west of Camosun. Please do not pick up or drop off your son in bus zones or no-stopping areas. Always move your car forward as far as possible before dropping off your child.

SCHEDULES AND COURSE CHANGE REQUESTS

Preliminary schedules were posted in June, and detailed schedules for all students are now posted on the School Portal For technical assistance, including username and password resets, please contact the Communications Team at: communications@stgeorges.bc.ca.

All students should look at their schedules twice before school starts: now and again after 5:00 pm on September 3rd for an updated version (this may include change in room numbers, confirmation of any course change requests, etc).

FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 8–10:

Your final schedule is based on school requirements, the information you gave us in the spring, class capacities, teacher and facility availability, and school approval.

There are a few opportunities to request a change in your schedule depending on the grade you are in. Please see this document for more information on when changes are possible.

If you would like to request a change, please take the following steps:

• Review your schedule on the School Portal and discuss it with your parents/guardians.

• Review the 2024-25 Master Timetable to see what other options are available. Please keep in mind that if you change English courses, you are still expected to have completed your Summer Reading before the start of class.

• Make any requests for changes using the appropriate form: Course Change Into Grade 8 (Opens August 15th at 8:00 am until August 30th at 4:00 pm).

Course Change Into Grade 9 and 10 (Opens August 15th at 8:00 am until August 30th at 4:00 pm).

• You do not need to communicate with anyone else for approval (Teacher, Head of Department, etc.).

• Look again on your School Portal after 5:00 pm on September 3rd for any changes that were possible.

• Before Winter Break, Grade 8 and 9 students will have an opportunity to request changes for Semester 2 Visual Arts, Theatre Arts, Music, and Applied Design, Skills, and Technology courses.

FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 11–12:

Our 2024-25 Master Timetable is optimised based on the combination of student choice, teacher and facility availability, and school approval. You may have elements of your own schedule that no longer serve your interests, goals, or capacities. You have multiple opportunities to request course changes. Please see the list of Course Change Request Windows here.

If you would like to request a change that fits the restrictions in the Course Change Request Window, please take the following steps:

• Review your schedule on the School Portal and discuss it with your parents/guardians.

• Review the 2024-25 Master Timetable to see what other options are available. Please keep in mind that if you change English courses, you are still expected to have completed your Summer Reading before the start of class.

• Refer to the Course Change Request Windows for further course change details.

• Visit page 9 of the Academic Handbook for graduation and course load requirements, and the rest of the handbook for course descriptions and prerequisites.

• Make requests using the Course Change Into Grade 11 and 12 form. Returning students should use their St George’s email address to complete the form. New students can use their personal email address.

• After this, you do not need to take any further action. You do not need to consult with your University Counsellor separately. The University Counsellors, Mr. Vytasek, and Ms. Bahia will be reviewing requests and will reach out to you via email should there be any questions. Please check your email regularly during this time period.

• Review your updated schedule by 5:00 pm on September 3rd for changes that were possible during the first Course Change Window and attend classes as scheduled.

TEXTBOOKS

There is no advanced textbook collection. Teachers will make arrangements for students to receive textbooks if needed during class time. Please Note: When textbooks are signed out, students are responsible for returning the books with the specific barcodes assigned to them. Charges are incurred for lost, damaged, or textbooks not returned by June 27, 2025.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

A list of required school supplies is available HERE. Students are encouraged to develop their own system of managing their daily, weekly, and monthly schedules and will be provided with organization ideas through Flex Day Programming. Additionally, to further support the development of time management and organisational skills, all students in Grades 8–11 will be provided with a personal planner this year.

SUMMER

READING

Every year, students in each grade are provided with a Summer Reading List, based on their grade. The lists have a combination of required and optional texts that students are expected to read before the first day of school. The first unit of the year in English classes is devoted to these texts. We encourage you to read them as a family! The Summer Reading List can be found here

MR. BRIAN LEE, ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL, STUDENT LIFE:

Mr. Lee oversees the overall Student Life Program at the Senior Campus. His portfolio includes but is not restricted to the following: Heads of Grade, Personal Counselling, Student Learning Support, Health Services, Co-curricular Activities, Advisory, Character Education, and Student Standards and Expectations.

For further clarification or questions about anything in this section, please contact: Mr. Brian Lee at: blee@stgeorges.bc.ca

STUDENT LIFE

Student Life enriches the schooling experience of our students, ensuring that the development of our Core Values and the social-emotional growth of each individual remains at the forefront of our daily endeavours.

Grounded in positive relationships, our school community nurtures a sense of belonging and provides opportunities for students to gain a strong sense of identity. We accomplish these goals of identity formation through a systems approach and intentional programming within our Advisory structure, Co-curricular activities, Student Support Services, Flex Days, and our Wings Program by capitalizing on teachable moments.

It is through sustained engagement in the aforementioned that we believe our students will gain a stronger sense of their values and personal beliefs; a foundation that will serve them well beyond the walls of St. George’s School.

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS

Co-curricular Programs are an important aspect of our education program and include competitive Athletics, Recreational, Arts and Leisure, and Co-Curricular Clubs. All students in Grades 8–10 must participate in a co-curricular activity each term; students in Grades 11 and 12 are permitted to take one term off.

Students’ co-curricular assignments will be posted on Canvas along with details about the location and the start time of activities. The following is an outline of the After-School Co-Curricular Programming Timelines for Term 1 (September 16–November 22, 2024):

• Online Sign-up Opens:

• Boarders: September 9 - Early Registration

• Day Students: Tuesday, September 10 at 7:00 pm

• Sign-up Closes: Friday, September 13 at 2:00 pm

• Official Co-Curricular Start: Monday, September 16

• Co-Curricular Change Deadline: Tuesday, October 1

• Official Co-Curricular Ends: Friday, November, 22

• A full list of the Term 1 options is available HERE

Students will receive a report card comment outlining their attendance and participation in each Co-Curricular activity.

INTEREST CLUBS

Interest Clubs also form an important part of school engagement and relationship building at the Senior campus. Although optional, Interest Clubs offer flexibility in commitment and a breadth of activities for students to engage in during lunch periods. Essentially, they provide another opportunity for students who share similar areas of passion to come together, connect, and collaborate.

ADVISORY

The purpose of the St. George’s Advisory Program is to cultivate a positive school climate and ensure that each student experiences a sense of belonging in our school community. Through nested communities, our students gain a more personalised learning experience where pastoral care, teaching and learning, character development, and community building are nurtured.

Student Advisory Classes will be assigned and confirmed on their finalised course schedule that will be available for review in September on the School Portal. Students will remain with the same Advisory Group throughout their time at the Senior School.

Advisory classes occur weekly during the Connection Block on Tuesdays or Fridays.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

Student comportment is a core aspect of life at St. George’s School. How we interact with one another and how we accept responsibility for ourselves are essential parts of becoming a “fine young man.” As always, we hold our students to the highest level of expectations and are pleased with how they learn to meet these expectations on a daily basis, forming habits that create a foundation for their success for years to come.

CODE OF CONDUCT

Each year, our students review the Code of Conduct during their Advisory class. The Code of Conduct outlines our expectations of our students as they relate to behaviour both on and off campus. It is essential that all students take the time to review the key principles outlined and have a full understanding of the expectations. As parents, you would have reviewed and signed the Code of Conduct during the registration process.

UNIFORMS AND PERSONAL APPEARANCE

St. George’s School’s Uniform and Student Personal Appearance Policy exist in order to cultivate a safe and respectful educational environment. The dress code outlines our high standards for presentation and complements our expectations for work and behaviour. The shared uniform is an expression of our shared community and we ask students to wear their uniform with respect and responsibility.

The St. George’s School’s Uniform and Student Personal Appearance Policy both supports and fosters an inclusive school environment. Students’ hair should be kept neat and tidy and away from the face. Neatly trimmed facial hair is permitted and the School will respect the religious and cultural traditions of students who observe a particular manner of dress or personal appearance.

We expect that all students will meet our Uniform and Personal Appearance standards. Students should wear their uniforms with pride and follow the standards set by the School. Specifically, they should be dressed in the following:

• White School Logo Golf Shirt (September and Spring Dress) OR

• White Dress Shirt with School Tie (# 1 School Uniform)

• Grey Pants

• Black Belt

• Grey Socks

• Polished Black Dress Shoes

• School Blazer (for Assemblies and Special Occasions)

During school hours, students are not permitted to wear sweatshirts, hoodies, or jackets in the building. If students require warmer clothing in the winter, they are advised to purchase a school sweater or wear their school blazer.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is mandatory for all students. Being physically at school and working with classmates and teachers is a key component of the educational experience. If students are going to be absent from school for any reason, please communicate prior to the absence to our Attendance Clerk by emailing: senior_ attendance@stgeorges.bc.ca or by leaving a voice message at: 604-221-3636.

SCHOOL ENTRY AND LATE STUDENTS

Arriving on time is essential for our student success. Students who are late for classes should enter through the Great Hall (Door C) and physically check in with our Attendance Clerk prior to attending class. Students who demonstrate a pattern of tardiness will be held accountable and subject to school disciplinary action.

TECHNOLOGY

The use of laptops is an important part of the learning environment. All students are required to bring a charged laptop or tablet with them daily. These devices will allow them to connect to our Canvas Learning System as well as other applications used throughout the school.

During the 2024-25 academic year, St. George’s Senior School will continue with its restricted use of cell phones and personal data devices for entertainment purposes (games, videos). Students are not permitted to use technology of any type during their lunch period except for academic purposes, and only within designated areas (Learning Commons and areas supervised by a teacher or staff member) of the school.

The Cell Phone Use Policy has been updated and coincides with the order by the BC Ministry of Education to restrict cell phone use in schools throughout the province. As a school, we remain committed to providing educational experiences that are consistent with and make use of the world of interconnected technology.

FOOD SERVICES AND LUNCHTIME

All students, including Grads, will eat in the McLean Hall during their designated lunch period. Students may choose to bring their own lunch to McLean Hall or participate in the Hot Lunch Program.

Sign-up for the Hot Lunch Program is available HERE

Students who bring their lunch from home are expected to recycle their lunch containers as appropriate.

Dietary Restrictions:

Students with special diets will be accommodated. Please contact Ms. Julie Matandac Food Services Supervisor, via email at: jmatandac@stgeorges.bc.ca.

To learn more about the Lunch Program, visit our website HERE.

Students are not permitted to order food from external food services unless authorized by school administration for club or group meeting purposes. Food should not be eaten outside of McLean Hall, and dishes should not be removed from the dining area.
