BACK TO SCHOOL

BUILDING FINE YOUNG MEN.

ONE BOY AT A TIME.

WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR.

I hope that the Summer Break has been a wonderful time for you and your family.

A unique aspect of schools is that each year we get to start fresh. It is quite unlike most other organizations. With schools, for the most part, the last year is finished and this year stretches out ahead untouched, with all possibilities available. In fact, the lengthy summer can amplify that sense of newness and fresh starts.

Many aspects of this yearly rhythm can be advantageous for boys — not all, but many. It allows them the opportunity to think of goals within a timeline that is more manageable and motivating for the growing brain — trying to consider goals five to ten years out is really hard for most boys to grasp so focusing on setting goals in one-year chunks is much more inspiring.

We want our boys to be ambitious and bold in th things they try. The likelihood of them jumping fully into those opportunities one year at a time is much more feasible.

As we arrive at the start of this new school year and look at the blank page called the 2024–25 school year, once again, there is a fresh opportunity for your son to commit to big goals, try new things, and develop himself in new ways. The previous school year is finished. His successes from that year are done, and it’s time to reach for new challenges. His failures are also behind him so he should let them go. He can learn from them but should not be shackled to them as that was last year.

And no doubt your son will experience new successes and failures this year, in equal measure. We want him to embrace all of them as they are the ingredients for growth and forward momentum.

We seek to intentionally create a pathway for a boy to grow towards being a good man. The summer pause and the fresh possibilities of a new school year, in a community that cares for him and encourages him to once again take risks and challenge himself, provide an important landscape where he can continue on his journey toward becoming a fine young man.

I wish you all the best for the 2024–25 school year!

Sine Timore Aut Favore.

GREETINGS

FROM THE PRINCIPAL OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

It was a sunny morning one day this summer when my family and I impulsively decided to hike the Stawamus Chief in Squamish. I said, “Oh yeah, we could totally do that!” — an easy comment to make curled up on my couch sipping coffee. I remembered the beautiful snapshots of scenery along the hike. I remembered taking in the breathtaking views from the top of the mountain. I did not remember the climb, though. It turns out the actual climb was a bit tricky. There were rock scrambles and a ladder to climb. The canyon? I conveniently blocked that from my memory! School can feel a bit like an intense hike. As adults, we often forget how challenging the day-to-day can be for our kids. By design, they are purposefully facing new difficulties every day. It’s no wonder that many boys feel a twinge of nervousness when they think about heading back to school. I want to assure you that the climb is worth it. The mental snapshots your son will enjoy throughout the year will keep him going. Without really knowing it, he will get stronger and grow in resilience and character. And at the end of the year, much like hiking the Chief, he will feel a sense of accomplishment and pride as he looks back on how far he’s come. Before we start this hike, though, it’s best to be prepared.

Here is some helpful information to get you started:

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION IS ON AUGUST 28:

For New Students: We look forward to welcoming new students at our New Student Orientation on Wednesday, August 28th. Students entering Grades 3–5 will have orientation from 9:30–11:30 am. Students entering Grades 6 & 7 will have orientation from 1:00–3:00 pm. Please bring a snack and a water bottle. Students may come in casual clothes.

FOR STUDENTS ENTERING KINDERGARTEN: Each Kindergarten boy will receive information from the Kindergarten and Admissions Team regarding gradual entry for September 4–6. Kindergarten students should arrive for their gradual entry sessions dressed in their school-crested golf shirt, grey flannels, and black shoes. The school blazer is optional for the entire school year. The first full day of classes for Kindergarten is Monday, September 9th.

FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 1–7:

The first day of school will be Wednesday, September 4th from 8:20 am–3:10 pm. All students should be dressed smartly in their #1 School Uniform: blue blazer, grey flannels, grey socks, black shoes, white shirt, and school tie. New boys are asked to not wear a tie on the first day as they will be presented with a school tie during a Formal Assembly at the end of the day. All students are reminded to bring their gym strip. The boys will be in their homerooms from 8:20–11:25 am and then begin rotation in the afternoon. Grade 7 students trying out for the “A” Soccer Team should bring their soccer kit for tryouts after school.

PLEASE ENSURE STUDENTS ARRIVE ON TIME: I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for the boys to arrive on time. The purpose of morning homeroom time is to help the boys settle in and begin to focus on their day. They will have time in their homeroom to collect their materials, organize their books, and review their daily schedule. Teachers also use this time to share announcements, check prep books, and have class discussions. Boys who constantly arrive late are not organized and develop bad habits. Students should be at school by 8:20 am on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and by 8:30 am on Wednesdays.

LATE START WEDNESDAYS:

This year we will be continuing our late start day on Wednesdays.

Late Start Wednesdays allow our faculty to focus on boycentred learning; examine and refine our teaching practices from Kindergarten to Grade 7; and continue to develop our rubrics and assessments. Collaboration time is essential for these projects, so we will use Wednesday mornings for our meeting time. Junior School faculty arrive early on Wednesday mornings to meet and work on our school goals. As a result, we are asking parents to drop their sons off between 8:20–8:30 am on Wednesday mornings only. We will not have supervision before 8:15 am on Wednesdays. The morning bell will ring at 8:30 am and students will proceed to their homerooms and then attend the first period. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday morning, the school bell will ring at 8:20 am for the beginning of the day. This time of the day is very important for both our teachers and boys as this is an opportunity for all to check in and organize the day ahead together.

CODE OF CONDUCT:

I would also like to draw your attention to our Code of Conduct. This document outlines our community values and is something that, upon enrollment or re-enrollment, each family commits to upholding.

In terms of expectations, we ask that families show commitment to our School. Regular attendance is outlined in our Code of Conduct. Students who play high-level sports of any kind are not permitted to miss school on a regular basis for practices. If they have occasional tournaments, they can request permission from their teacher and principals to miss some school. Attendance and participation are important, valued parts of our School Program and are included in our Code of Conduct.

PLEASE CONSIDER USING OUR BUS SERVICE TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

We strongly encourage all Junior School families to use our Bus Service. Regular bus travel is good for the environment and helps alleviate traffic congestion in the neighbourhood. There is no additional cost for the Bus Service; however, students must register in order to be eligible to ride the bus. More information about our Bus Service and registration process is provided later in this book.

SAFE PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF:

We ask that all students be regularly picked up and dropped off by a parent, guardian, or caregiver. Please be respectful of other road users and pay particular attention to the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. Please note that a 30km/h speed limit applies on West 29th and Chaldelcott Park, along West 33rd beside Memorial West Park, and along Camosun Street beside Southlands School.

To help with a safe and considerate arrival at school, we ask that you:

• Have your son sit behind the passenger, on the right-hand side of the car, with his backpack on his lap. This will help keep traffic flowing and reduce the congestion on the narrow streets around the school.

• Do NOT do a U-turn on any street. Doing a U-turn on Wallace, 29th, Camosun, or any of the other streets around the School can block traffic, making it worse for other drivers. We remind you that all U-turns in Vancouver are illegal.

• Do not park close to corners, crosswalks, or in the areas marked by signs. There needs to be visibility of pedestrians entering the crosswalk so do not block this clearance. If you need to wait for your son, please find another area to do so. The parking authority can ticket accordingly.

We have designated drop-off and pick-up locations to maximize student safety and minimize traffic congestion. IMPORTANT REMINDER: Please DO NOT drop-off and pick-up on Wallace Street.

We also have a regular bus service that we encourage all boys to participate in to reduce the amount of vehicles on the road. Boys will not be permitted to use Uber, Lyft, or taxis as a form of transportation to or from school. We appreciate your support with this protocol. More information about designated student drop-off locations and bus service is provided in this digital book.

BIKING TO SCHOOL & ROAD SAFETY:

If your son rides his bike or scooter to school, we ask that you remind him about the importance of road safety and respecting all traffic signs. Your son should be equipped with a helmet and follow all safety rules. We ask that boys who bike or scooter are especially careful of vehicles on the road, especially as they turn into the Junior School property. Please take the necessary precautions.

EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION:

Student safety is our number one priority but sometimes critical incidents do occur. If this does happen, St. George’s School will reach out to you via text message and email. These communications will direct you to where to look for more information (i.e. the school website) and/or when you might receive the next update.

You can also follow our Instagram account and website for updates during an emergency:

Instagram: @saintsbc

School Website: www.stgeorges.bc.ca

During the 2024–25 school year, you can expect to receive emails and text messages as part of our process of emergency preparedness drills as we conduct drills with students and staff.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE:

If parents have any concerns about their son’s performance, they are urged to contact their homeroom teacher by phone or email or make an appointment to meet. Parents should check the website frequently and be sure to read the weekly Saints eNews to keep themselves abreast of everything, including course outlines, athletic fixtures, and school announcements. The “My Resources” page of the website is also a helpful tool, as it provides invaluable information about the policies and routines of the School. As always, my door is open if you have any concerns — please phone or email me to make an appointment.

MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT – SEPTEMBER 12:

Lastly, parents are asked to mark Thursday, September 12th on their calendars for our Meet the Teacher Night. This is your opportunity to come into the School, meet your son’s subject teachers, and familiarize yourself with the expectations and routines of the classroom.

I look forward to seeing all the boys in September. In the meantime, have a restful and enjoyable remainder of the Summer Break!

All absences need to be accounted for either by note, email, or phone message. The School’s policy is that a child should attend school every day unless there are medical issues, bereavement in the family, or celebration of a religious holiday.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

The Junior School’s Dress Code and Standards of Appearance exist to cultivate an educational setting where students are able to concentrate on learning in a safe and respectful environment. The dress code reflects our high standards of presentation and complements our expectations for work and behaviour. Students should wear their uniforms with pride and follow the standards set by the School. For September and October, the Golf Shirt is acceptable for the uniform. Specifically, the uniform includes:

• White School Logo Golf Shirt (September–October (until Thanksgiving), and April–June)

• White Dress Shirt with School Tie (#1 School Uniform; October–April)

• Grey Pants

• Grey Socks

• Polished Black Dress Shoes (No black runners)

• School Blazer (For Assembly and Special Occasions)

• Primary boys (Kindergarten–Grade 3) may wear their golf shirts or buttoned-down shirts all year

Students are not permitted to wear sweatshirts or hoodies at school except during recess. If students require warmer clothing in the winter, they are advised to purchase a school sweater, vest, or wear their school blazer during the school day. For recess, boys can wear any brand of jacket or coat. We encourage students to dress for the weather as every day is an outdoor day at the Junior School.

With respect to personal appearance, please be reminded that hair should be kept neat and off the collar, shaped close to the head, and away from the face. Please note that the School respects the religious or cultural traditions of our students who observe a particular manner of dress or grooming.

If you require a uniform, the School Store at the Junior School is open throughout the summer. Appointments may be made by phoning the store at 604-221-3899 or emailing Ms. Aswhin Benny, Head of Retail Services, at: abenny@stgeorges.bc.ca.

This annual stop-and-shop event is a wonderful opportunity to find gently used school clothes for your ever-growing son(s).

Cash payments and personal cheques will be accepted. Student accounts cannot be billed. Please remember to bring your own reusable bags for your purchases.

DONATIONS ACCEPTED

We will also accept uniform donations for this event on Friday, August 30th under the Junior School front archway until 1:00 pm. Items should be laundered, have the current school logo, and be in good condition (no rips, holes, or stains).

OUTDATED CLOTHING FOR ZERO WASTE

If your donation items are outdated, stained, torn, or have a year or team event logo, please put them in a separate bag labeled ‘ZERO WASTE’. We’ll accept these unsellable items and ensure they are recycled, in partnership with the Global Stewardship Initiative.

Please consider volunteering with the Used Uniform Team and sign up here
