DEDICATION This 75th Anniversary Tikhonaire is dedicated to the entire Saint Tikhon's Community. Those living and those departed, those known and unknown, those currently working actively within her walls and those who have been called away to serve the people of God elsewhere. Thank you for offering some portion of the story of your life to our common history. Please join us now as we REMEMBER.

Our Historical Narrative The process that went into the creation of the 75th Anniversary Tikhonaire was one that utilized contributions from several different sources, both oral and written. Sometimes these sources were incomplete and/or conflicting, but from its inception this year’s Tikhonaire was never intended to be a complete and comprehensive look back at every moment of historical significance in the life of the institution. The 50th Anniversary edition that was published in 1988 went far in this regard and remains a valuable resource for this edition and for those wishing to understand the history of the St. Tikhon's Community. The 75th Anniversary Tikhonaire was an heroic undertaking that had as it driving principle the accomplishment of three distinct goals. The first was the collection of photographs for and listing of every person that had either graduated from St. Tikhon's, or had at one time or another been actively involved in the community as a member of the administration, faculty, or staff. Secondly, we wished to show the continuance of the shared life that is experienced within the ever-evolving organism that is the St. Tikhon's Community. To show that this shared life is one that transcends perceived “gaps” both generational and jurisdictional, that it is more profound than personality or artifice, that it is, in the truest sense, a specific local manifestation of the common Orthodox Faith that we all share. The third and final driving principle behind the 75th Anniversary Tikhonaire was the understanding that at no point was the document to be seen as an encapsulation or completion of the “telling of the story of St. Tikhon's.” The telling of a story as significant as this one could not be done by one graduating class or one group of Tikhonaire writers. This year's publication was intended to be a starting point for a conversation. A conversation involving graduates past and present, one involving administrations current and former, and one involving persons monastic, married, ordained, and not ordained. This is why we are pleased to introduce in connection with the publication of the 75th Anniversary Edition and the yearlong Celebration of the 75th Academic Year, an historic “call-to-action.”

Beginning this summer an interactive portion of this year's Tikhonaire will also be available online for everyone to participate in and contribute to the preservation of our shared heritage. Here you will be able to share stories and recollections which will be added to those of others, to be preserved forever as part of the rich historical narrative of the St. Tikhon's Community. Stories and storytelling have from antiquity played a significant role in the preservation and transmission of details, both historical and cultural, from one generation to the next. It is with this in mind that we are pleased to announce the St. Tikhon's Historical Initiative. Seminarians will be standing by this Memorial Day weekend to listen to, and to document for posterity, any stories or recollections that you or your loved ones would like to donate to the endeavor. After the Memorial Day festivities, and continuing throughout the foreseeable future, a representative of the community can be available (by appointment) to receive your verbal or written contribution to our shared history. Because we also understand that not every member of our extended community is able to be present for the Memorial Day Pilgrimage, beginning in the Fall of the 2013/2014 Academic Year, we will begin making available teams of representatives from the St. Tikhon's Community to come to your local parish to record and add your stories and the stories of the members of your parish to the “Memory Archive.” As always your historical contributions, pictures, written reflections, biographical or otherwise can be mailed to: St. Tikhon's Historical Initiative PO Box 130 South Canaan PA 18459 You can also send them electronically to communityfeedback@stots.edu Finally, if in this initial phase of our conversation we have neglected to mention a particular graduate of the seminary or if the dates regarding a particular person seem to be incomplete or inaccurate, please do not hesitate to send us the corrected information to the same addresses listed above so that we might update our database.

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT - 2013 TIKHONAIRE

2013 PRESIDENT of ST. TIKHON’S SEMINARY OFFICE of the PRESIDENT The Office of the President has from its inception been an historic honor bestowed by the Board of Trustees of the institution upon the ruling hierarch of the Orthodox Church in America. By statute, this office has been held simultaneously in all three seminaries by the Metropolitan of the Church or by the appointed temporary administrator while awaiting the election of a successor in the case of vacancy.

The President of the Seminary operates in an exofficio capacity within the Board of Trustees of the institution. As ruling hierarch of the Church, the President seeks to promote the cooperation of all educational institutions of the Orthodox Church in America for the overall betterment of the Church and its constituencies.

His Beatitude, Tikhon (Mollard)

OFFICE OF THE RECTOR - 2013 TIKHONAIRE

2013 RECTOR of ST. TIKHON’S SEMINARY OFFICE of the RECTOR Historically the Office of the Rector has been a hierarch of the Orthodox Church in America (formerly the Russian Metropolia.) The only exceptions to this came in the early years when the office was held by an interim administrator while the institution awaited the appointment of a successor. The Rector is the Chief Executive Officer of the Institution and is responsible before the Board of Trustees, the Seminary Community, and the entirety of the Church for its welfare.

The Board of Trustees vests the executive responsibility for management of the Seminary in the Rector, who is appointed by the President of the Seminary in consultation with, and by approval of, the Holy Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church of America and the Board of Trustees. As the Chief Executive Officer of the Seminary, the Rector oversees all facets of institutional life, and is responsible for guiding the school’s programs.

Bishop Michael (Dahulich)

OFFICE OF THE DEAN - 2013 TIKHONAIRE

2012-2013 DEANS of ST. TIKHON’S SEMINARY OFFICE of the DEAN As the Chief Operating Officer, the Dean has the responsibility of overseeing the day to day operations of the seminary. The Dean serves as an ex-officio member of the Board of Trustees, and coordinates matters relating to the administration of the seminary’s educational program.

The Office of the Dean had a more direct role within the student body and could be considered more in keeping with what today might be called the “Dean of Students.” Other times the office was absorbed entirely by the Office of the Rector, depending upon need and the availability of qualified support staff.

Historically, the distinction of “Dean” has had a fluid designation of duties. For example, in the early years of the Seminary the title “Dean” was often used synonymously with that of “Inspector” and had a very similar list of responsibilities.

For our purposes the Office of the Dean has been understood in its broadest sense and is used here to designate individuals who have historically been referred to as Dean, Inspector, Dean of Students, Dean of Seminary, Academic Dean, Administrative Dean, or Dean of Faculty.

The Monastery Brotherhood America’s Oldest Orthodox Monastery From the Abbot & Interim Dean Igumen Sergius

Christ is Risen! It is with great joy that we greet you on behalf of the Monastery and Seminary community on this 109th Pilgrimage during our 75th Anniversary of our holy seminary. We thank God for the past year with all of its challenges which have again reminded us not to trust in ourselves but in the “God who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did.” As the Interim Dean of St. Tikhon’s Seminary, I thank you all for your continued love and support of this holy place and I ask for your prayers and participation in the upcoming celebrations and events surrounding the 75th anniversary of the founding of St. Tikhon’s Seminary. As we contemplate the mystery of God’s love for us, His call, and all of His gifts that He has bestowed and continues to bestow on us, let us give thanks for them and for this holy place. Let us especially remember, honor, and revere all of those, known and unknown, who have labored and given their life for the building up of the Church in America through the invaluable

work that is done here at St. Tikhon’s Monastery and Seminary. We honor our new graduates, our Alumni, our Benefactors, our supporters, our Faculty, our Administration and Staff, our Metropolitan Tikhon, our Rector Bishop Michael, our Monastic Community, and you, our faithful family. May God continue to bless and keep us all in His loving care. Be assured of our love and prayers for you, one and all. Christ is Risen! Sincerely yours in Christ,

Field Education

“... for I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me. (Matt 25) Field Education Program Fr. John Kowalczyk

Theological field education promotes theological learning and personal integration through active engagement in a pastoral situation, and through subsequent theological reflection on the experience. Through theological reflection, students perceive how theology and the tradition of the Church shed light on the pastoral situations that they experience. The formative process is enriched as seminarians learn to relate their field education experiences to academic, spiritual and personal formation.

Plains Meat Market

Academic work, spiritual insight and pastoral ministry come to reinforce one another. Theology is illumined in the process. Theological reflection is critical also for practical learning in a formational context. A complex enterprise that does not take place automatically, such learning can represent a significant moment of personal integration. The mutual interaction of theological reflection and the experience of field education promotes personal growth and integration by helping seminarians to sense the presence of God in these experiences, and to relate their personal inner life in Christ to the service of (ministry to) the People of God.

Over the past year, the Alumni and their families gathered as the Alumni Association hosted the Annual Alumni Picnic where stories were shared and the new and returning seminarians and families were welcomed with the faculty, administration and staff. 75th Anniversary Trips to The Holy Land As part of the 75th Anniversary Celebration, two Pilgrimages and Educational Tours were scheduled; both of the pilgrimages are led by His Grace, Bishop Michael, Rector of Saint Tikhon Orthodox Theological Seminary and an Honorary Alumnus. The first of the two “Ancient and Holy in the Holy Land” was completed this Memorial Day Weekend. The other “The Best of Russia: Moscow, Novogord, Saint Petersburg and Valaam” will be held in June.

Other plans for the 75th Anniversary Celebration include: A Clergy update in June at the seminary; regional gatherings in July and the annual alumni picnic on 12 September 2013. The Alumni continue their monetary support of the seminary through donations to the Alumni Association. Also, a special designated collection has been undertaken to procure a new Flag Pole which will be placed in front of the main seminary building. A rededication ceremony will be planned. As alumni there is much to be proud of and much to celebrate. Plan to gather with your classmates and other alumni and families during the activities and events of the 75th Anniversary. In order for our seminary to grow and to continue to nourish and equip future generations of clergy, choir directors, church leaders, we need to intensify our dedication, devotion and zeal; sustain our commitment and faithfulness, and remain steadfast in our undertakings in support of our seminary with faith, hope and love. We cannot minimize the importance that each and every alumnus can play for the betterment of the Alumni Association of Saint Tikhon Seminary as well as for the betterment and growth of our seminary.

OUR COMMUNITY GIVING BACK - 2013 TIKHONAIRE

Our Community Giving Back

Various ways in which we are able to invest our talents for the building up of Christ’s Church.

THE MISSION CHOIR A Note from the Director Benedict Sheehan

Every year, St. Tikhon's Mission Choir has the privilege and joy to go on the road, promoting and supporting St. Tikhon's Seminary, and providing students with invaluable "real world" exposure to the wonderful parishes in our Orthodox Church in this country. However, the 2012-13 academic year — the beginning of the Seminary's 75th year, and my third year as choir director — has been a year of immense growth and development for the Mission Choir. Building on a core group of students who have now sung together for three years, and being renewed over the past two years by a number of dedicated and talented singers, the Mission Choir has, with God's help, become a highly competent Orthodox male choir, capable of singing the entire liturgical year with discipline, refinement, spiritual depth, and beauty. This is important for St. Tikhon's, and it is a vital ingredient in the Seminary's outreach. This year’s Mission Choir CD, “Memory Eternal: An Orthodox Christian Requiem” Available at the monastery

This year’s Mission Choir

Another major element in the choir's growing success and reputation is the influence of Vladimir Gorbik, choirmaster at the Moscow Representation Church of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra and one of Russia's finest living church conductors. Beginning his relationship with St. Tikhon’s last summer by becoming my mentor in church conducting, and being now also my close personal friend and colleague, Maestro Gorbik came to St. Tikhon's this past March to give a three-day master class with our singers, as well as those from St. Vladimir's and Holy Trinity Seminaries. Working intensively with the students over the course of three arduous days of rehearsal, Maestro Gorbik imparted to them a gift of inestimable value: an experience of singing Orthodox sacred music

2013 TIKHONAIRE - OUR COMMUNITY GIVING BACK where rigorous musical professionalism is united with heartfelt prayer. Most of the students had never experienced anything like this before, and all of them came away from the master class transformed in some way. A glorious weekend of hierarchical services with our beloved Metropolitan Tikhon, followed by a spectacular concert, attended by nearly three hundred people, who gave the choir five standing ovations, crowned the students' labors.

A professional recording of the concert is slated to be released on CD in the coming months, and having now heard the finished material, I can safely say that the result will be nothing less than stunning. What a glorious way to inaugurate our 75th year! With God's blessing, and with the prayers and support of our Orthodox faithful, the work of St. Tikhon's Mission Choir will continue to bear fruit in the coming academic year. Vladimir Gorbik is due to return to St. Tikhon's for the feast of the Elevation of the Cross in September, and I intend to continue my work in honing the choir's skills — and my own — and building up our repertoire. From the bottom of my heart I offer thanks to all the wonderful people and parishes who supported our work this year, but above all, I want to thank all the students who selflessly offered their time and talents to make this work possible. If these young men are the future of our Church, I have good hope that that future will be a bright one.

ELIJAH’S MANTLE

A New Ministry Theophan Mackey

Initiated in the summer of 2012, Elijah’s Mantle is a ministry which has flourished because of the generosity of the Orthodox community, and has become a shining example of what a “grass-roots,” Orthodox, panjurisdictional, ministry in the United States can look like. Elijah’s Mantle is a ministry which acts as a conduit for older or presently underutilized liturgical items to be passed from churches with items to spare, churches that are closing, and retired or reposed clergy, to new missions or churches that are in need of these items but cannot afford them. The inventory is comprised entirely of donations, and all items are made available at the cost of shipping only. It has arranged for the shipment of larger items directly from the donors to the recipients to save on storage and shipping costs.

207 This year’s recipients include: • V. Rev John Filipovich of St. Jonah Orthodox Mission, Alpine, TX • V. Rev Stavros Rousos of Protection of the Mother of God/St. Nektarios Russian Orthodox Mission Church, Chattanooga, TN • Fr. Christopher Allen of Sts. Joachim and Anna Orthodox Mission, Austin, TX • Fr. David Bozeman of St. Nektarios Orthodox Mission, Waxahachie, TX • Fr. Andreas Blohm of Archangel Gabriel Orthodox Mission, Ashland, OR • Fr. Ian Shipley of Saint Andrews Orthodox Church, Ashland, VA • Fr. Boulos Khory of Hemet Mission Station, Escondido, CA • Fr. Gregoire Legoute of ROCOR missions in Haiti • Fr. Elijah Bremer of Sts. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, Alum Bank, PA • Fr. David Wooten of Iglesia Ortodoxa de los Santos Apostoles, Miami, FL • Fr. Benedict Simpson of St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church, Acworth, GA • Fr. Philosoph Uhlman of Saint John the Wonderworker Mission, British Columbia, Canada • Fr. Mark Mancuso of St Elizabeth the New Martyr, Lexington, SC • Fr. Raphael Johnson Protection of the Holy Theotokos, Alberta, Canada • Fr. Matthew Harrington St. John The Theologian Orthodox Mission, St. Francisville, LA • Fr. Gregorio Justiniano Saint John Climacus Mission, San German, Puerto Rico • Fr. Mark Rowe St. Joseph's Orthodox Church, Sarasota, FL • Dn. Joel Wilson, Orthodox Mission, Rolla, MO

Almost every Orthodox jurisdiction is represented in the donor or recipient list of Elijah’s Mantle. Parishes and missions in fifteen states, Puerto Rico, Haiti, British Columbia, and Alberta, have been the recipients of the generous donations through Elijah’s Mantle.

SEMINARY RENOVATIONS - 2013 TIKHONAIRE

Archpriest John Skvir Classroom Dedication and remodeling of a classroom On Saturday July 7, 2012 a recently renovated classroom was blessed in memory of the Right Reverend John Skvir (STOTS 1943), a seminary alumnus, dedicated churchman, and devoted pastor. The classroom renovation was donated by Mrs. Elsie Skvir Nierle. Father Daniel Skvir, son of the late Fr. John Skvir, celebrated a small blessing service followed by remarks by him and Fr. Alexander Atty, Dean of St. Tikhon's Seminary. On behalf of the seminary community, Fr. Alexander thanked Elsie and the Skvir family for their generosity and love for the seminary.

May Father John's memory be eternal!

May, 2012 - In preparation for Commencement 2012, the roof of the Pavilion needed to be repaired. Thanks to the generosity of St. Tikhon’s Monastery, the Pavilion roof, which had several holes allowing leakage into the building, was able to be redone.

The planting of additional trees, shrubs and flowering bushes as well as the decorative mulch and stone work further add to the beauty of the newly remodeled seminary building.

2013 TIKHONAIRE - MARRIED STUDENT HOUSING PROGRAM

217

Married Student Housing Program The Next Phase of Growth As many of you may be aware of by now, St. Tikhon’s is at the beginning of a major improvement campaign to raise money for married student housing. This has been a priority for this institution for several years now and represents the next phase of growth for our seminary community. Currently, upon moving to St. Tikhon’s, new married students and their families must search for and find properties to rent or purchase for the duration of their three years at seminary. This is difficult to do as most, if not all the students move from a considerable distance. To further complicate things, there is very little housing immediately around the seminary. Usually students must find housing several miles away from the seminary grounds, meaning they will spend at least half an hour of every day in the car driving to and from seminary. For the last several years, the seminary has worked with incoming married students to find rental properties that are suitable for their family’s needs. While this has worked out well for a few of the families, others end up in situations where they end up overpaying for the property, or they find themselves having to contact the landlord for repairs.

The Married Student Housing Program solves all of these problems by providing clean, spacious, and affordable housing right down the road from the seminary grounds. This project requires a tremendous amount of resources though, and will require that those in the Church do their part to ensure for the long term sustainability of the program. We have recently mailed to our supporters a brochure that was developed over the past several months, in tandem with a promotional video that was unveiled at the most recent Fellowship of Orthodox Christians in America (FOCA) Convention in Washington, DC. Already the amount of support for this project has been very encouraging. Since the development of both the flyer and the video, FOCA has pledged $300,000 to the endeavor and has taken their place as the second of our two “Cultivator” level supporters – for this we are eternally grateful. The FOCA organization has been a tremendously generous supporter of our institution in the past and with this most recent gift has provided us with a very good start to this long-overdue campus enrichment project. Please take a moment to look at the brochure included on the next two pages and prayerfully consider your or your parish’s participation in this very necessary seminary program.

CENTURY ASSOCIATION - 2013 TIKHONAIRE

St. Tikhon’s Century Association Congratulations to our beloved St. Tikhon’s Seminary for 75 glorious years of service to our Holy Orthodox faith! Memory Eternal to those graduates who are fallen asleep, and Many Years to the graduates, students, faculty, administration and staff who preach the word of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and who dedicate themselves to making St. Tikhon’s a bright light for Orthodoxy in America and throughout the world.

Forty-two years ago, a group of dedicated Orthodox Christians formed the Century Association to insure the best possible future for St. Tikhon’s Theological Seminary. The primary purpose of the Association is to provide spiritual support and financial assistance for the educational programs offered by the Seminary. Through annual membership contributions, donations, and fund raising projects such as our annual festival, the Association has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Seminary. This funding allows the Seminary to continue to provide the highest quality of theological education and spiritual formation to men who are preparing for Ordination to the Holy Priesthood. St. Tikhon’s graduates also serve the spiritual needs of Orthodox faithful in educational and musical positions, strengthening the bonds of Orthodox fellowship throughout the world. St. Tikhon’s Century Association is governed by a Board of Directors under the direction of a spiritual advisor. The Board meets regularly, and the annual meeting is held each October at St. Tikhon’s Seminary. Following our annual meeting, we enjoy a potluck reception. Our major fund raising project each year is an annual festival. For the past four years, “Hospitality a la Russe”

has been a very successful event featuring food, fun, fellowship, and concerts by the Kovriga Balalaika Orchestra and the Podoben Chorus. Each January the Century Association hosts a luncheon for seminarians in honor of St. Tatiana, the patron saint of students. After a brief introduction to the Century Association, students enjoy a special meal and a decadent dessert table prepared by members and friends of the Association. Please consider joining the Century Association as we continue in our dedication to protect the sacred and holy work of our Seminary. Joining the Century Association confirms your love of God and His Holy Orthodox Church, and your sincere interest in strengthening our Faith for future generations. Our children, their children, and the generations to follow are depending on us. --------------------------------------------If you would like to become a member, please send a check or money order made out to “St. Tikhon’s Century Association” and mail it to: St. Tikhon’s Century Association P.O. Each fiscal year our financial accountability is audited by a professional CPA firm. We are very pleased to report that once again we have merited an Unqualified Audit which is the highest standard one can achieve in this process. But this is only a very small part of the work that occurs each day in our constant diligence to provide timely and accurate information not only to the Board of Trustees of St. Tikhon’s but also to our faculty, staff, administration, and most important of all to our many benefactors and supporters.
