Audi presents the highlight of the IAA 2009: the e-tron, a high-performance sports car with a purely electric drive system. Four motors – two each at the front and rear axles – drive the wheels, making the concept car a true quattro. Producing 230 kW (313 hp) and 4,500 Nm (3,319.03 lb-ft) of torque, the two-seater accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (0 – 62.14 mph) in 4.8 seconds,
and from 60 to 120 km/h (37.28 – 74.56 mph) in 4.1 seconds. The lithium-ion battery provides a truly useable energy content of 42.4 kilowatt hours to enable a range of approximately 248 kilometers, or 154 miles. The performance figures are by no means the only evidence of the consistent and holistic strategy. The design e-tron Please Turn to Page 4

e-tron From Front Cover makes it clear that the e-tron belongs in the major leagues of sports cars, and the package takes into account the specific realities of an electric vehicle. The battery is directly behind the passenger cabin for an optimal center of gravity and axle load distribution. The e-tron is able to freely distribute the powerful torque of its four electric motors to the wheels as required. This torque vectoring allows for dazzling dynamics and an undreamed-of level of agility and precision when cornering. Audi has taken a new, and in some cases revolutionary, approach to many of the technical modules. A heat pump is used to efficiently warm up and heat the interior. The drive system, the power electronics and the battery are controlled by an innovative thermal management system that is a crucial component for achieving the car’s range without compromising its high level of interior comfort. Networking the vehicle electronics with the surroundings, which is referred to as car-to-x communication, opens new dimensions for the optimization of efficiency, safety and convenience. The Concept Electric drive systems are still very much outsiders. The first vehicles of this type took to the roads around 1900, yet in 2009 no volume car manufacturer has a car powered exclusively by batteries in its lineup. Fewer than 1,500 electric vehicles are currently registered in Germany, corresponding to only 0.035 percent of all registered vehicles. Yet electric driving potentially offers numerous advantages. Electric cars reduce the dependence of transportation and the economy on the raw material petroleum. They produce no direct exhaust emissions and thus ease the local burden on the environment. Electric drive systems are also signifi

cantly more efficient than combustion engines, consequently making them easier on the customers’ wallets. Other strengths include sportiness and the fun they bring to driving. All of the torque is essentially available the moment the
driver steps on the accelerator, allowing for breathtaking acceleration. There is still a lot of work to do before electric cars are ready for volume production, however. The greatest challenge is the integration of the energy storage system. Acceptable range and performance requires a traction battery that is heavy and takes up a lot of space. Audi is taking a new approach to offset these disadvantages – a holistic approach with a specific vehicle package, a systematic lightweight construction concept and an optimal configuration of all components for the electric drive. Design and Package The caliber of the car is apparent to the observer at first glance. The Audi e-tron has a wide, powerful stance on the road. The car body seems almost monolithic; the closed rear end appears powerful and muscular. The trapeze of the single-frame grille dominates the front end and is flanked by two large air intakes. The top of the grille merges into the flat strips of the adaptive matrix beam headlamp modules with November 2009
their clear glass covers. High-efficiency LED technology is used for all lighting units – a matter of honor for Audi as the worldwide pioneer in this field. The headlamps are the core of a fully automatic light assistance system that reacts flexibly to any situation. The new technology recognizes weather conditions and adapts the illumination to rain or fog. The technology at the heart of the light assistance system is a camera that works together with a fast computer to detect oncoming traffic, recognize lanes and measure visibilities, such as in the event of fog. If there is oncoming traffic, for example, the high beams are turned off in the corresponding section of the illumination field. The cornering light system analyzes data from the navigation system and illuminates corners before
the driver steers into them. The Audi e-tron does not have conventional fog lamps that consume additional power. It instead intelligently varies the low beams to widen the illumination field, thus significantly reducing the glare from the car’s own lights. New design elements unique to the e-tron are the air intakes in the single-frame grille and in front of the rear wheel wells. They are closed flush under normal circumstances and opened by means of flaps when additional cooling air is required. Maximum efficiency is also the reason behind this measure. The concept car has a remarkably low e-tron Continued on Next Page
e-tron From Previous Page drag coefficient, which gets even better when the flaps are closed. The vehicle body is compact. The sweeping line of the front end and the flat curved roof immediately identify the two-seater as an Audi. The contours of the flanks are familiar. The tapering of the dynamic line above the sill and the shoulder line tie together the front end, the side and the rear, lend a plastic quality to the doors and the transition to the side air intake and sharply emphasize the Audi-typical round wheel wells with the large, 19-inch tires. At 1.90 meters (74.80 in) wide, just 4.26 meters (167.72 in) long and 1.23 meters (48.43 in) tall, Audi e-tron has the proportions of a supercar. The wheelbase of 2.60 meters (102.36 in) leaves plenty of room between the axles for people and technology. Like with a midengined sports car, the cabin of the e-tron is shifted far forward toward the front axle, leaving room in front of the rear axle for the roughly 470 kilogram (1,036.17 lb) battery unit, the inverter and the power electronics. The two electric motors, which have their own cooling system, are mounted behind the rear axle. The front electric motors are mounted on the front axle, with their cooling system arranged in front of them. This special package, which features a 42:58 weight distribution, ensures perfect balance, which contributes to the driving dynamics of the e-tron. Systematic lightweight construction is an even more important prerequisite for efficiency and range with electric vehicles than for conventionally powered automobiles. The Audi development engineers drew on the core competence of the company for the e-tron. The body structure is based on Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology and was realized as a hybrid construction. All add-on parts – doors, covers, sidewalls and roof – are made of a fiber-reinforced
plastic. The combination of aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced composite material guarantees supreme rigidity coupled with low weight. Audi will soon use this technology in a similar form for production vehicles. Despite the complex drive system layout with four electric motors and a high-capacity battery system, the total weight of the Audi e-tron is only around 1,600 kilograms (3,527.40 lb). Interior and Control Concept Optical and functional references to the new drive concept characterize the interior design. They establish an advanced connection between proven Audi genes and new formal hallmarks. Typical for the Audi design language is the reduction of the
architecture, controls and flow of information to the essential in favor of visible lightweight construction and a tidy overall impression. Characteristic for the concept of the Audi e-tron is the near total elimination of switches and small components such as the ignition. The climate control unit is located to the right above the steering wheel. The display provides temperature and ventilation information. Again drawing inspiration from a smartphone, the system is controlled by means of a touch-sensitive sliding control. The racing-inspired lightweight bucket seats combine excellent lateral support with comfort. Contrasting colors November 2009
– snow white and cognac – delineate the various zones of the interior. The colors and the high-quality materials combine elegance and sportiness. Drive System and Energy Supply Four asynchronous motors with a total output of 230 kilowatts (313 hp) give the Audi e-tron the performance of a high-output sports car. The concept car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0 – 62.14 mph) in 4.8 seconds if necessary, and goes from 60 to 120 km/h (37.28 – 74.56 mph) in 4.1 seconds. The torque flows selectively to the wheels based on the driving situation and the condition of the road surface, resulting in outstanding traction and handling. The top speed is limited to 200 km/h (124.27 mph), as the amount of energy required by the electric motors increases disproportionately to speed. The range in the NECD combined cycle is approximately 248 kilometers (154 miles). This good value is made possible by the integrated concept: technology specially configured for the electric drive system combined with stateof-the-art battery technology. The battery block has a total energy content of roughly 53 kilowatt hours, with the usable portion thereof restricted to 42.4 kWh in the interest of service life. Audi uses liquid cooling for the batteries. The energy storage unit is charged with household current (230 volts, 16 amperes) via a cable and a plug. The socket is behind a cover at the back of the car. With the battery fully discharged, the charging time is between 6 and 8 hours. A high voltage (400 volts, 63 amperes) reduces this to just around 2.5 hours. The Audi engineers are working on a wireless solution to make charging more convenient. EPA, NHTSA Propose National Fuel Economy, GHG Program U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Ray LaHood and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa P. Jackson have announced a national program to improve fuel economy and reduce greenhouse gases. The program will be an interagency program to address climate change and energy security The joint proposal will establish a national program consisting of new standards for model year 20122016 light-duty vehicles that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve fuel economy. The proposed program is the EPA's first-ever national greenhouse gas emissions standards under the Clean Air Act, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is proposing Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) Standards under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act. The standards proposed would apply to passenger cars, light-duty trucks and medium-duty passenger vehicles, covering model years 20122016. They require these vehicles to meet an estimated combined average emissions level of 250 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) per mile in model year 2016, equivalent to 35.5 miles per gal-
lon (mpg) if the automotive industry were to meet this CO2 level through fuel economy improvements. The proposed rules are intended to increase energy security, reduce air pollution, increase fuel savings, offer clarity and predictability for manufacturers and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. "American drivers will keep more money in their pockets, put less pollution into the air, and help reduce a dependence on oil that sends billions of dollars out of our economy every year," said Jackson. "By bringing together a broad coalition of stakeholders - including an unprecedented partnership with American automakers - we have crafted a path forward that is a win-win for our health, our environment and our economy. Through that partnership, we've taken the historic step of proposing the nation's first-ever greenhouse gas emissions standards for vehicles, and moved substantially closer to an efficient, clean energy future." The EPA reports that transportation sources represent a large and growing share of U.S. greenhouse gases, and in 2006 they emitted 28 percent of all U.S. greenhouse gases. Transportation sources were the fastest-growing source
of these gases in the United States, accounting for 47 percent of the net increase in total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from 1990-2006. The national program proposed by the EPA and NHTSA would address the closely intertwined challenges of global warming, energy independence and security through a strong and coordinated federal greenhouse gas and fuel economy program for light-duty vehicles. The proposed program is projected to reduce U.S. carbon dioxide emissions by 950 million metric tons and save 1.8 billion barrels of oil. Further, the costs of the program are projected to be less than $60 billion, well below the expected benefits, which are expected to exceed $250 billion. The EPA is also proposing standards that will cap tailpipe nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) emissions at 0.010 and 0.030 grams per mile, respectively. The EPA states that even after adjusting for the higher relative global warming potencies of these two compounds, nitrous oxide and methane emissions represent less than 1 percent of overall vehicle greenhouse gas emissions from new vehicles.n

e-tron From Page 5 be placed in the garage at home or also in special parking garages, is activated automatically when the vehicle is docked. Such technology is already used today in a similar form to charge electric toothbrushes. The battery is charged not only when the car is stationary, but also when it is in motion. The keyword here is recuperation. This form of energy recovery and return to the battery is already available today in a number of Audi production models. During braking, the alternator converts the kinetic energy into electrical energy, which it then feeds into the onboard electrical system. The Audi e-tron, which is slowed by four lightweight ceramic brake discs, takes the next large step into the future. An electronic brake system makes it possible to tap into the recuperation potential of the electric motors. A hydraulic fixed-caliper brake is mounted on the front axle, with two novel electrically-actuated floatingcaliper brakes mounted on the rear axle. These floating calipers are actuated not by any mechanical or hydraulic transfer elements, but rather by wire (“brake by wire”). In addition, this eliminates frictional losses due to residual slip when

Other electric vehicles are equipped with electric supplemental heaters, which consume a relatively large amount of energy. The heat pump used by Audi – and commonly used in buildings – is a highly efficient machine that uses mechanical work to provide heat with a minimum input of energy. A high-efficiency climate control system is used to cool the interior. It works together with the thermal management system to also control the temperature of the high-voltage battery. 2009 Nissan Altima Coupe Demands Attention With Aggressive Styling, Performance And Features
Though based off the dynamic Nissan Altima Sedan, the sporty, 2door Altima Coupe delivers a totally unique driving experience. The Altima Coupe fills a desire among target customers for a more personal expression of style, individuality and fashionable appearance. Its unique exterior design is intended to stand out in a crowd of sedan-based two-door models with magnetic, perfectly proportioned styling with a shorter wheelbase, shorter overall length and lower height than the Altima Sedan. The smaller size and lighter overall weight also contribute to the Altima Coupe’s sportier driving feel – another desired attribute of the typically younger, more performanceoriented coupe buyers. “Like the popular Altima Sedan, the Coupe offers style, performance, quality and passion with a personality that is all its own,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. “The Altima Coupe is more than just two less doors, it offers its own unique interpretation of Nissan’s exhilarating driving pleasure. The Coupe’s aggressive design, driver-oriented cockpit and unique styling give it an extensive amount of separation from the Sedan.”
The 2009 Altima Coupe is available with a choice of the award-winning VQ-series 3.5-liter V6 or powerful 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engines, each offered with either a 6-speed manual transmission or Nissan’s advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission). Design That Ignites Emotion, Passion and Enthusiasm The most noticeable separation from the Altima Sedan is the Altima Coupe’s bold exterior styling. Dimensionally, the Altima Coupe rides on a 105.3-inch wheelbase, a full 4.0 inches shorter than the Sedan. Overall length is 182.5 inches – 7.1 inches less than the Sedan. The Coupe also has a lower profile – at 55.3 inches it is 2.5 inches lower than the Sedan. In terms of major body panels, the two cars share only a common hood, with all other panels, grille, headlights and rear combination lights unique to the Altima Coupe. Two chrome exhaust tips with unique rear taillights form a distinctive rear presence. November 2009
“Altima Coupe is sleek and sporty, featuring an aggressive stance and a bold shoulder that adds dimension to the body side,” said Castignetti. “It’s a car that looks much more expensive than it is, both the exterior and interior, and feels like it, too.” An Advanced “D” Platform Under the Altima Coupe’s sophisticated exterior design, this latest addition to the Altima family shares the platform, powertrain and user-friendly features and innovations of the fourth-generation Altima Sedan. Altima Coupe utilizes Nissan’s advanced “D” platform. First used on the 2007 Altima family, this new platAltima Please Turn to Page 15 Southern Automotive Journal

JM Family Enterprises Earns a Spot on 2009 InformationWeek 500 List of Top Technology Innovators Across America
Diversified automotive company JM Family Enterprises, Inc. (JM Family) today announced it has been included on the 2009 InformationWeek 500, an annual listing of the nation’s most innovative users of business technology. Ranked No. 167, the company was also featured in a breakout article, “20 Great Ideas to Steal,” for its use of texting and mobile technologies to drive automotive dealership profitability. The 2009 InformationWeek 500 companies were revealed on Sept. 14, 2009 at an awards ceremony held during the InformationWeek 500 Conference in Dana Point, Calif. “Our technology associates have been extremely dedicated to our dealer customers during this tough economic environment, and they have continuously made it their top priority to provide quality service” said Ken Yerves, chief information officer, JM Family
Enterprises. “Receiving this honor is a tribute to their passion and innovation for technology.” As one of the company’s five core values— Consideration, Cooperation, Communication, Accountability and Innovation— remaining innovative is of utmost importance to JM Family. In response to the industry downturn, the company created a dealer services team to focus on technology innovation. By leveraging social computing technologies, the team rolled out numerous programs and automotive marketing campaigns. For example, dealers are running sweepstakes and giveaways using text messaging. They are also displaying vehicles in popular areas with a text number in the windshield for interested customers to receive information. “For over 20 years, the InformationWeek 500 has honored the most innovative users of business tech-
nology,” said InformationWeek Editorin-Chief Rob Preston. “Year after year, InformationWeek 500 companies harness technology to improve efficiency, boost productivity, drive revenue, and establish a competitive advantage. We applaud this year’s winners, and the CIOs and other executives whose ingenuity and risk taking are at the center of business technology innovation.” InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing, now in its 21st year, and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America’s best-known companies. The InformationWeek 500 rankings are unique among corporate rankings as it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders. n
Space-Age Safety: Ford, Auburn Explore How GPS Satellites Could Help Prevent Auto Accidents
Joint advanced research by Ford Motor Company and Auburn University shows that global positioning system (GPS) satellites could potentially monitor a vehicle's motion and communicate with in-car safety systems to help prevent accidents. Virtual reality tests show that GPS satellites can precisely monitor a vehicle's motion, which could improve the speed and effectiveness of electronic stability control systems. The joint research is now moving into the prototype phase. The research team presented initial research findings at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 11-14. Ford scientists in Dearborn, Mich., are working with researchers at Auburn University's GPS and Vehicle Dynamics laboratory in Auburn, Ala., as part of ongoing research with universities across the country focused on safety and sustainability. A groundbreaking research project by Ford Motor Company and Auburn
University shows that global positioning system (GPS) satellites that can "talk" to cars could help prevent serious accidents in the future. The researchers have found potential for a GPS satellite to act as an early warning system that detects when a vehicle is about to lose control and communicate with the vehicle's stability control systems and other safety features to prevent a rollover or other serious accident. "A satellite orbiting the earth could someday prevent an auto accident," said Dr. Gerhard Schmidt, Ford's Chief Technical Officer and vice president, Research and Advanced Engineering. "We applaud the Auburn team for these advancements and look forward to working together on the next phase of this research, including developing prototype vehicles." The project is part of Ford Motor Company's $4 million investment in university research programs in 2009, including 16 safety projects. Auburn University's GPS and Vehicle Dynamics Laboratory, directed
by Dr. David Bevly, received a three-year, $120,000 grant from Ford in 2008 as part of company's University Research Program. The research team is investigating the use of combining GPS and inertial measurement units data to provide precise information on a vehicle's motion. The data could be used to improve performance of a vehicle's electronic stability control system, a computerized technology that improves the safety of a vehicle's stability by detecting and minimizing skids. "Stability control is one of the most important safety technologies of this decade," said Jeff Rupp, manager, Ford Active Safety Systems Engineering. "Ford is committed to safety leadership, and research partnerships like our work with Auburn help us achieve success." The project's breakthroughs include developing algorithms combining data from sensors in Ford vehicles with data from GPS receivers. This coordination of data has led to predictive models that can calculate a vehicle's roll angle, sideslip and velocities under various driving conditions.n

Opel Presents Zero Emission Ampera The five-door, four-seat Opel Ampera uses the ground-breaking electric propulsion technology called Voltec, which operates differently from other advanced propulsion systems. This extendedrange electric vehicle (E-REV) uses electricity as its primary power source and gasoline as a secondary power source to generate electricity. The Ampera's wheels are turned electrically at all times and speeds. For journeys up to 60 km (MVEG), it runs exclusively on electricity stored in the 16-kWh, lithium-ion battery, and emits zero CO2. When the battery's energy is low, electricity from an enginegenerator extends the Ampera's range to more than 500 km. The Ampera can also be plugged into any household 230v outlet for charging. Opel's extended range electric vehicle is announced to go into production in late 2011. Available video includes driving footage of the car.n

Recycled Rides Vehicle Donations Roll in from Generous Insurers and Industry Partners The National Auto Body Council (NABC) wishes to announce its appreciation for the insurance industry and other strategic industry partners, who are stepping forward to provide the vehicles forming the foundation of NABC’s Recycled Rides program. Recycled Rides is a community awareness project whereby members of the NABC repair and donate refurbished vehicles to families and service organizations in need throughout the United States. Without vehicles for the collision repair industry to refurbish, there can be no program. “We are very appreciative of the strong response we have received from insurers; their participation is crucial to the success of Recycled Rides,” states Bill Mayer of Insurance Auto Auctions, who functions as Recycled Rides’ vehicle procurement chair. “Many vehicle
transformations are already underway, but there remain additional opportunities for insurers and others to donate vehicles.“ Insurers that have so far provided vehicles are Allstate, American Family, Amica, Esurance, GEICO, Progressive, Republic Insurance Group, State Farm, Travelers, USAA. Participating strategic industry partners include the rental car companies, Hertz and Enterprise. “We are grateful for the vigorous support of the insurance community and rental car business,” adds Mike Quinn, co‐founder of 911 Collision Centers and 2009 Recycled Rides chairman. A green project, Recycled Rides is not only good for the environment, but drives media awareness, helping NABC achieve its mission of enhancing the image of the collision industry,

while each individual market receives share of local attention. Also of significance is the fact that the initiative brings together all industry participants—collision repairers, insurers, car rental companies, paint suppliers, parts suppliers and material vendors—each participating in their own way to make it success. If you are interested in participating in Recycled Rides, please contact the vehicle donation hotline at 88866‐PRIDE (888‐667‐7433) or e‐mail info@autobodycouncil.org. Recycled Rides’ long‐term goal is 500 simultaneous vehicle donations, which Quinn believes can be achieved with growing list of donors and participating repairers. Any collision shop, insurer, vendor, parts provider, or other company interested in participating in the program is encouraged to contact the hotline.n

Infiniti Confirms M35 Hybrid Production Infiniti recently confirmed that its first production hybrid vehicle will be part of the recently announced line of 2011 Infiniti M luxury performance sedans, which are scheduled to go on sale in spring 2010 at Infiniti dealers nationwide. The Infiniti M35 hybrid is expected to arrive about 12 months later as a 2012 model. It is Infiniti's first hybrid in its 20-year existence, as well as the cleanest and most economical car in Infiniti's history. Realizing the high performance/low emissions promise of the recent Infiniti Essence concept car, the M35 Hybrid has been designed and engineered to add to, not take away from, the driving experience, a key part of any Infiniti's appeal. The M35 Hybrid is based on the all-new M, which itself picks up styling cues from Essence, the show-stopper that made its debut at the Geneva Auto Show early in 2009. The M35 Hybrid maintains a high performance luxury sedan profile, overlaying it with the fuel economy and CO2 emissions of a smaller car, while delivering driving flair to please any enthusiast - complete with charismatic V6 and rearwheel drive handling. Infiniti's hybrid system, developed solely within Infiniti's parent group,
is a single electric motor/twin clutch arrangement. Innovatively, the first clutch is installed between the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 and the electric
motor. The result of this configuration, where all components act on a single prop shaft to the rear differential, is a consistent driving feel under all conditions with linear performance and the "direct responses" that the engineers sought. The electric motor acts as both propulsion unit, boosting the V6 in "power assist" mode when maximum acceleration is required, and also as a generator. Along with charging the battery in the normal way, the motor recovers energy otherwise lost during deceleration and
braking. The M Hybrid can also run solely on its electric motor in certain driving conditions, furthering fuel efficiency and optimizing energy usage across the widest possible range of driving conditions. Details of driving range, performance and transmission will be released later. As expected of Infiniti, several new technologies are introduced in the new M35 Hybrid, including a "laminated" lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack that is the same size as conventional batteries but offers twice the power. Lamination enhances the pack's cooling performance, while temperature stability is further improved by the use of manganese positive electrodes. An end result of this is exceptional battery reliability. The M35 Hybrid joins conventional engine-equipped 2011 M versions including a new high-performance diesel V6 for Western Europe - as the first Ms to be sold across all of Infiniti's world markets, currently 33 countries. All of the new-generation Infiniti M models are on target to beat their predecessors on fuel consumption and emissions - despite across-the-board performance improvements - thanks to a range of efficiencyenhancing measures.n

Distracted Driving: Drivers Learn to Pay Attention ing patterns which are indicative of driving while distracted. Specifically, people who text-and-drive typically generate an excessive number of hard braking events, while aggressive drivers generate a higher number of 'jack-rabbit' starts. Driving safely saves fuel. According to the National Highway Safety Administration, aggressive driving decreases fuel efficiency by as much as 30%. Dave Childress of Consolidated Networks Inc. says that the scorecard has made him much more aware of driver safety and has helped his company reduce excessive fuel consumption by over 20%. "Before I got ROVER onboard I didn't give a lot of thought to my own driving habits. For instance, I had no idea how using my cell phone was causing me to do a lot of hard braking. ROVER has made me a much more attentive and diligent driver". ROVER uses acceleration, speed, idling, location, and time of day to deter-
Cartasite® announced commercial release of the world's first driver performance analysis system, ROVER(TM). Utilizing a simple wireless monitoring plug-in device, Cartasite spent the past two years analyzing driver behavior. The data has proven to be a powerful and effective tool for identifying 'drivers-atrisk'. ROVER, the world's first Realtime Onboard Vehicle Evaluation Reporting system, utilizes GPS and accelerometer circuits to capture subtle characteristics unique to each driver. This data is then transmitted wirelessly using cellular networks to a large data warehouse. Software algorithms rank each driver and generate an overall score, providing quantitative leading indicators of risk that a given driver may be involved in a crash. Distracted and aggressive driving has become a systemic problem on the nation's highways in recent years. Certain data streams gathered by ROVER are an effective tool for identify-
mine overall score for each driver. Every car built since 1996 has a diagnostic port (OBD) located near the steering column used by mechanics and emissions bureaus to assess engine operations. Cartasite's ROVER plugs into this port, taking just seconds to install on any vehicle. A confidential scorecard is emailed weekly to each driver, providing a detailed evaluation of their performance as compared to others. Customers can log onto Cartasite's worldVIEW web application to access realtime vehicle location, idle time, and detailed activity logs. A notification system generates text or emails for excessive speeding and arrival/departure events. "For years we have offered our customers a realtime map interface. While it helped companies improve their business efficiencies, there was too much focus on the 'big brother' aspects of GPS systems," said David Armitage, CEO of Cartasite. "ROVER changes that, bringing to market a potent tool that will help us all become safer drivers."n

URG Sees Opportunity for Independent Auto Recyclers in LKQ Purchase of Greenleaf Representing the nation's independent auto recyclers and consolidators, United Recyclers Group sees new opportunities for their members to grow and expand with the recent announcement that LKQ Corporation (Chicago, IL), the nation's number one automobile recycling company, has acquired the number two company in the market, Greenleaf Auto Recyclers, LLC, from Schnitzer Steel Industries (SSI). "The auto recycling business is dynamic and highly competitive. There are probably some nervous independent auto recyclers out there watching what is happening and wondering what it all means for their future," says Michelle Alexander, Executive Director of URG. "What this transaction really does is create a lot of new opportunities. Working with our members, we intend to capitalize on this changing marketplace to help them find ways to increase sales, quality, and profitability." "I am really excited about what LKQ has just done," says Mike Kunkel, General Manager of American Auto Salvage (Ft. Worth, TX). "When number one acquires number two, that means that number three - which is us, the nation's independent auto recyclers - steps up to become number two. LKQ has just created an opening in the marketplace that we want to be a part of filling with expanded sales. We are hoping to process a lot more cars, sell a lot more parts, and become even greener in what we do." According to LKQ, the wholesale recycling business acquired from Greenleaf consists of 17 operating locations, including Michigan,
Ohio, Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas, and Nevada. LKQ says it plans to merge certain locations together with its existing wholesale recycling operations, which will result in the elimination of approximately 11 operating locations. In another part of the transaction, SSI acquires several self-service used auto parts operations. SSI says that all of the acquired operations will operate under the company's Pick-n-Pull brand. LKQ Corporation is the largest

nationwide provider of aftermarket collision replacement products, recycled OEM products and refurbished OEM collision replacement products such as wheels, bumper covers and lights which are used to repair light vehicles. LKQ operates approximately 280 facilities offering its customers a broad range of replacement systems, components, and parts to repair automobiles and light, medium and heavy-duty trucks. Additionally, they are a leading distributor of paint and body shop supplies.n

Ford EcoBoost(TM) Engine Receives Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award Ford Motor Company's (NYSE: F) fuel efficient EcoBoost(TM) engine will be honored Thursday evening with a Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Award at a ceremony at the Hearst Tower in New York City. The Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards, now in their fifth year, recognize products and celebrate innovations poised to change the world, and the passionate, smart creators behind them. Ford is the only automaker this year to receive a Breakthrough Award. "From flying cars to robots to wind turbines for homes, the innovations honored by the 2009 Popular Mechanics Breakthrough Awards not only capture the imagination, they hold the potential to improve and even save lives," said James B. Meigs, editorin-chief, Popular Mechanics. "We are pleased to honor this year's diverse list of visionaries, Dean Kamen among them, and applaud their efforts to address such concerns as climate change, pollution, energy shortages and medical care in the developing world." EcoBoost, which uses turbocharging and direct gasoline injection to boost engine output, reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency by as much as 20 percent marks a major milestone in the Ford strategy to deliver technologically advanced, high-output, smaller-displacement powertrains. The Ford powertrain management strategy uses hundreds of thousands of lines of computer code and related parameters that are adjusted to optimize the engine and transmission operation. It's these processes that largely make up the more than 125 EcoBoost patent contributions and makes Ford's use of direct injection and turbocharging of its engines like no
other automaker in the world. Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development, Ford Motor Company, will accept the award in New York. "Ford engineers looked at every available engine configuration, comparing power, price, economy and emissions, determining the best way to power Ford vehicles in the future," said Kuzak. "EcoBoost technology gives us everything: a combination of the performance buyers expect and fuel economy improvements they demand that, until now, only has been achievable with the latest-generation turbo-diesel powertrains." By 2013, more than 90 percent of

State Farm® Statement on Secretary LaHood Focus on Distracted Driving State Farm® applauds U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood for convening this group of distinguished experts at the Distracted Driving Summit. Distracted driving is a growing safety risk that affects everyone on our nation's roadways. This summit provides a forum for sharing the latest research, regulation, education, and best practices in addressing the dangers that distraction poses. State Farm's research shows that 65% of drivers 18 years of age and older talk on a hand-held cell phone while
driving, and 31% text message while driving. For young drivers, these numbers are even higher. As the leading automobile insurer in the country, State Farm is very concerned about the safety hazards inherent in distracted driving. We are participating in this week's Distracted Driving Summit because we believe a solution lies in a comprehensive approach. Education, solid legislation, and law enforcement are all important components of the solution. "State Farm has a long history of commitment to occupant and highNovember 2009

Bly Named ASA's Top Recruiter, Chairman's Club Winner for 2009 The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has announced the winner of its 2009 Chairman's Club Award, the association's grassroots member recruitment program. This year's recipient is Jeff Bly of Maywood Transmission Inc., an ASA member-business in Independence, Mo. The Chairman's Club award honors ASA members who recruited or provided leads for prospective shops to become members of the association. Jeff Bly Bly earned more member recruitment points than any other ASA member between the close of last year's competition through Sept. 15, 2009. The accomplishment earns Bly an expense-paid trip to one of ASA's two annual trade shows - The Congress of Automotive Repair and Service (CARS) or the International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE) - both of which will be held at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Convention Center in Las Vegas Nov. 4-7. "The Chairman's Club was established to reward members for their assistance in growing ASA's membership. The best recruiters the association has are our members. I am grateful to Jeff for his assistance in spreading the ASA message to our industry. His commitment to growing the membership is truly inspiring," said B.J. Johnson, vice president of membership services. "I'm very honored to accept this prestigious award," said Bly. "I would like
to personally thank Todd Mehalko, ASA membership recruiter, who taught me that recruiting is mainly about 'excitement.' He told me that if you're truly enthusiastic about a particular feature, or benefit of ASA membership, then that's what you should talk about when you approach a prospective member. As it turns out, excitement has proved to be contagious in ASA-Missouri/Kansas (ASA-Mo/Kan). I enjoy being part of an association that is truly amazing. I look forward to seeing many of my ASA friends at CARS." Bly is a full-time technician at Maywood Transmission. In addition to recruiting members for ASA, he is an active member of ASA-Mo/Kan who serves as state secretary for the affiliate, is the ASA-Kansas City chapter president, and also serves as the ASA-Mo/Kan newsletter chairman. "Jeff has an incredible enthusiasm for ASA and the automotive service industry. He is well-respected in the industry and has done an amazing job growing the Kansas City chapter, as well as inspiring members to become leaders and get more involved," said Sheri Hamilton, AAM, executive director, ASA-Mo/Kan. The Chairman's Club program is based on a point system: five or more points are earned for each new member a current member recruits. The member with the most points by a specified date is awarded the grand prize - an expense-
paid trip to ASA's CARS or NACE events. The ASA Chairman's Club is an integral part of ASA's membership recruitment program. All regular members in good standing are invited to participate in the Chairman's Club program. Individuals who participated in the 2009 program will receive a certificate of appreciation from ASA for their recruitment efforts. The next grand prize recipient will be determined Aug. 15, 2010. Watch for upcoming announcements from ASA to learn more about the next Chairman's Club program, prizes and opportunities for bonus points. For more information, call the ASA membership department at (800) 272-7467, ext. 295; or visit the ASA Community section in the Members Only area of the ASA Web site, www.ASAshop. org. To encourage member recruitment at CARS and NACE this year, ASA is announcing an exciting new contest - the Chairman's Club Challenge! For every prospective member that a current member and Automotive Service and Repair Week (ASRW) attendee signs up during NACE and CARS, that member's name and the name of the newly recruited member will go into a drawing for a $100 VISA gift card each. (Essentially, ASA will give away two $100 gift cards - one to the referred new member and one to the regular member in good standing who recruited him or her.) For more details, see the October issue of AUTOINC. or visit ASA booth N8601 during the event.n

New Co-Sponsors Sign On to Repeal McCarran-Ferguson Act U.S. Rep. Louise McIntosh Slaughter, D-N.Y., chairwoman of the Rules Committee, and U.S. Rep. Eric Massa, D-N.Y., have signed on as cosponsors to House Bill 1583, legislation that would repeal the McCarranFerguson Act. Since 1945, insurance companies have had a "limited" exemption from federal antitrust laws that apply to most other industries assured to them through an act of Congress. The McCarran-Ferguson Act provides that federal antitrust law applies to the "busi-
ness of insurance" only to the extent that such business is not regulated by state law. The anti-competitive consequences of McCarran impact both consumers and small businesses that have to deal with insurers. The Automotive Service Association (ASA) hosted a Capitol Hill Fly-In in July to show support for this bill. ASA leaders from across the United States met with their representatives to discuss the benefits of repealing the McCarranFerguson Act. The Automotive Service

Association supports H.R. 1583 because: • A competitive marketplace would only enhance consumers' options. • The state insurance regulatory structure has failed for consumers and collision repairers. After years of complaints, many states lag in addressing important consumer and small-business property and casualty issues: i.e., consumer steering, insurer pressure to use inferior auto parts, paint caps, etc. These problems are increasing for consumers and repairers, not decreasing.n

Other cameras will film the driver's view of the road. The signals and the videos are saved on a hard disk from where the researchers can analyse the driver's head and eye movement patterns. "This helps us to better understand the interaction between driver,
car and the traffic environment. The interface between human and machine (HMI) is one of our key research areas. All instruments and functions must be easy to understand and use. It is vital that new information and support technology in our cars is designed and co-ordinated in the right way. The information must help the driver without stealing attention," says Jan Ivarsson. He adds: "A couple of years ago, we introduced a basic information management feature, IDIS, that for instance blocks incoming phone calls when the driving demands full attention. Our aim is to refine the technology so it can manage information to fit each driving situation."n
