Buick unveiled the Wildcat EV concept — an expressive vision of the brand’s new design direction as it transitions to an allelectric future. The Wildcat was developed to convey the all-new design language that will influence Buick production models for the foreseeable future. Buick’s new trishield logo, mounted prominently on the body front and rear, symbolizes the design transformation
and new production models will wear it starting next year. “The Wildcat EV concept represents the real design future for the brand,” said Sharon Gauci, executive director, Global Buick and GMC Design. “Buick has always been forward looking and this expression is a glimpse of where we’re going, and the optimism we have for the limitless possibilities

Wildcat EV From Front Cover of an electric future.” The Wildcat EV concept also introduces a new, expressive face for Buick, distinguished by a bold, forward-leaning front-end appearance that features a low-mounted, trapezoidal grille. Sharp, highmounted and horizontal check mark-shaped lighting flanks the vehicle, while the outer edges of the grille house primary lighting. The lighting elements are configured to create a unique welcome choreography when the driver
approaches. Further, the vehicle — a 2+2 coupe — strikes a powerful, expressive presence, with an allnew, laid-back proportion complemented by a low, wide stance. The windshield wraps around and flows into the side glass, which tapers dramatically with the fast roofline to accentuate the aggressive profile. “From every angle, the vehicle looks like it’s ready to pounce,” said Bob Boniface, director, Global Buick Design. “It’s the result of careful attention to the proportions and sculptural beauty
derived from the intersection of forms, not lines.” “The more you look at the Wildcat EV concept, the more the details reveal themselves,” said Boniface. “Its timeless proportions acknowledge the brand’s rich design legacy, while our latest technology moves you forward.” A blend of modernity and warmth Inside, the Wildcat EV concept’s cabin has an inner glow that is inviting and comforting, all while integrating new technologies designed to make the riding experience more enjoyable.

Exterior design highlights include: • Distinctive semi-swing doors for easy entry and exit. • Unique aluminum trim that appears to flow seamlessly into the interior seat structures. • Micro-LED lighting technology and thin-beam projector lenses for the front lighting. “It’s a space intended to strike an emotional chord,” said Therese Pinazzo, Buick exterior and interior design manager. “It is defined by simple, graceful forms that convey balance, harmony and a feeling of warmth.” The 2+2 configuration, delineated by a prominent console that extends from the base of the instrument panel to the rear seating area, uses unique graphic and color contrasts to create the perception of visually floating elements intended to accentuate the cabin’s lightweight feel and spaciousness. Color plays an important role in the warmth and comfort the interior conveys. Legato Green flows through the cabin and is www.IneedOEMparts.com

Additional interior design elements include cockpit-style seats with cantilevered headrests that appear to be floating, and a lightweight, flat-bottom steering wheel. When it comes to technology integration and infotainment interaction, a sweeping touchscreen is the access point on the instrument panel, along with a complementing screen on the console. For example, when Zen Mode is activated, it will dim the cabin lights, disperse calming aromatherapy scents and activate massaging seats. Everything about the concept is intended to convey what’s possible — in design, technology and the transformative experience of EV mobility. “We are on the cusp of true change, and this concept is a tangible vision of it,” said Gauci. “It inaugurates the next chapter in Buick’s design heritage, as we make the crucial transition to our all-electric future.”n Southern Automotive Journal

BMW 2 Series Next Generation of Its Compact Rear-Wheel Drive-Based Sports Coupes
BMW next generation of its compact rear-wheel drive-based sports coupes, the 2022 BMW 230i and BMW M240i xDrive Coupes. Striking, extroverted styling, more powerful engines, improved chassis and dynamics, greater interior room and the latest in infotainment and connectivity are just some of the improvements that await the new BMW 2 Series Coupe driver. 2 Series Coupe is focused on delivering maximum driving enjoyment, with every component having been optimized for this purpose. More than 55 years ago, the first BMW 1600 arrived with compact dimensions, a sophisticated chassis and a powerful engine. When the 2002 designation was attached to the 2-door body, a legendary automobile was born. One that provided an unequaled driving experience through a carefully balanced combination of engine, chassis, braking and driver-focused cockpit. In 1973, 8

Exterior Design The 2nd Generation BMW 230i Coupe is 4.3-inches longer, 2.6-inches wider, 1.0-inch lower and has a 2.0-inch longer wheelbase than the 1st Generation 230i Coupe. The August 2022

a single-piece frame in a chrome finish on the BMW 230i Coupe and in cerium grey on the BMW M240i xDrive Coupe. The strikingly contoured headlights - inspired by the legendary BMW 2002 models - each have a single individual circular full-LED headlight. The daytime running lights take the form of U-shaped light guides, with integrated turn signals, at the lower edge of the headlights. Adaptive LED Headlights are optional with the Premium Package. As well as responding to steering angle, their cornering light function can also “look ahead” – using data from the navigation system data – in order to illuminate the road as effectively as possible. The Adaptive LED Headlights can be identified by gold colored accent trim and light guides for the daytime driving light and turn indicators. And the
Adaptive LED Headlights are also available with darkened inlays as part of the Shadowline Package. Pronounced surfaces at the rear of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe produce an appealing interplay of light and shadow effects which enhances the visual power of the car. Like the compact headlights at the front of the car, the contours of the standard darkened rear lights – positioned at the outer extremes of the rear end – embody a more sporting form. Their surfaces are formed by light clusters with threedimensional sculpting. This provides a unique showcase for the LED technology. The rear light bars illuminate to produce a new, downward-ending interpretation of the familiar L shape. They border the pentagonal brake light units at their upper edge and to the side. Horizontal LED light guides below the rear lights serve as turn indicators. A rear bumper
insert finished in matt black and with integral reflectors underscores the sporting look. Power and Performance The new 2 Series Coupe delivers more power and torque, an eight-speed sport automatic transmission with launch control, rear wheel drive or rear-biased xDrive all-wheel drive and a completely revised chassis for exceptional performance and a driving experience unequaled in the compact sports coupe segment. The BMW 230i Coupe’s revised 2.0-liter 4-cylinder BMW TwinPower turbo engine produces 255 hp @ 5,000 – 6,500 rpm and 295 lb-ft. of torque @ 1,550 – 4,400 rpm. An increase of 7 hp and 37 lb-ft of torque over the previous model. The rear-wheel drive 230i Coupe accelerates from 0 – 60 mph in 5.5 seconds BMW 2 Series Turn to Page 20

New Study: Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance Produces +47% Return on Investment for American Businesses Employers in the United States this year will earn an average return on investment (ROI) of 47% from their employer-sponsored health insurance (ESI) programs, according to a new study from Avalere Health. This means for every dollar spent on ESI, employers get back $1.47 in financial benefits. The analysis from the health data firm finds that the average ROI is projected to grow to 52% in 2026, and that businesses that invest more in their ESI programs tend have a higher ROI. PACT Members Reaffirm Importance of Employer-Sponsored Health Care Coverage Nearly 3 Million Americans at Risk of Losing their Employer-
Sponsored Coverage under Proposed Reconciliation Reforms While providing employees high quality health insurance is the right thing to do for workers, the report shows how it makes business sense. Avalere attributes the direct financial return for employers to lower direct medical costs, increased productivity, lower recruitment costs, stronger retention, lower short- and long-term disability costs, as well as tax benefits. More than 155 million Americans currently get their health insurance through ESI. The study was commissioned by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the Protecting Americans’
Coverage Together (PACT) campaign. PACT members, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Business Roundtable, The National Association of Manufacturers, Council for Affordable Health Coverage, and Vermeer Corporation, represent leading employer voices focused on strengthening the employer-sponsored insurance (ESI) system and protecting the coverage and benefits that American families depend on for their health. The report from Avalere looks across industries at trends that drive ROI higher and lower. Avalere highInsurance Please Turn to Page 38

Auto Care Association Members Call on Industry to Turn Up the Heat During Right to Repair Awareness Month The United States automotive aftermarket has experienced several victories when it comes to Right to Repair, which secured the consumer's right to choose where they get their vehicle maintained and repaired. This right was secured twice in Massachusetts: first in 2012, resulting in a nationwide Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with automakers for vehicle diagnostic and maintenance data from the OBD, and again in 2020 for wirelessly-generated vehicle data. Contrary to the will of Massachusetts voters, soon after the win in 2020, the automakers filed a lawsuit to overturn this 2020 victory for consumer rights and we are still waiting on a decision from
the judge. As the industry awaits the long-anticipated decision on the Right to Repair court case in Massachusetts, the auto care industry continues the fight for safe and secure access to vehicle maintenance and repair data on the national and international stage. On the federal front, the Auto Care Association has worked to gain support for the REPAIR Act to secure the Right to Repair for all Americans, but time is running out to secure co-sponsors in this Congress. Due to currently competing legislative priorities (supply chain shortages, war, inflation), it is likely the REPAIR Act bill will need to be reintroduced in 2023.
In response to the need to continued momentum and even more engagement on the issue, members of the Auto Care Association’s Marketing and Communications committee are asking for the industry to partake in a “Right to Repair Awareness Month” this July. “It’s critical to engage our 4.4 million brothers and sisters in this battle for independence,” said Bill Hanvey, president and CEO, Auto Care Association. “We must continue a steady drumbeat and add more voices to our story. That’s why this July, we’re launching Right to Repair Awareness Month to ensure that every colleague, peer and coworker knows what Right to Repair is and why they need to get involved.” n

We’ve had some wiring situations that we were able to fix in a few hours versus a few days using See What I See and that’s really valuable,” says Susan Padro, Service Manager at Mullinax Ford in Apopka Florida. Ford has activated 1200 of the headsets so far with more than 350 SWIS calls to TAC in the last 90 days. All US-based dealers should have SWIS in their toolbox by November of this year. Currently, SWIS is for diagnostic assistance, but designers are working to enhance the headsets to add more specific use cases such as H-VAC concerns. Other uses cases include gaining prior approval before replacing a windshield by sending pictures of the defect instantly.n

SWIS’s augmented reality capability allows TAC team members to display modified or enhanced images on the headset for the dealer technicians to view. According to Green, “We had one case where a technician reported the vehicle would not recognize the low tire pressure sensors. When the tech contacted the Hotline using SWIS, they quickly found out they were using the wrong tool when they tech held it up in front of the camera. Once the right tool was used, everything was programmed just the way it should.” At the TAC headquarters, a team of about 150 technicians receives about 5,000 calls from dealership technicians across the U.S. each week looking for support or answers regarding a variety of issues. Of those, about 200 cannot be diag-

Since the first 1967 model, the Mustang Shelby GT500 has stood for the pinnacle of Mustang performance and has continued to build on the legacy of Shelby performance. With a reputation for transforming Ford Mustang into dominant road racing machines, Carroll Shelby, American racer and entrepreneur, took his legendary Mustang GT350 model further in 1967 to craft the first-generation Shelby GT500 with a modified 428-cubic-inch V8 inspired by his team’s 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans. Carroll Shelby called the original Shelby GT500 “the first real car I’m really proud of.” The Shelby GT500 is just as iconic today – as the most powerful and most advanced Mustang ever – as it was during its first iteration 55 years ago. August 2022
Paying homage to the original 1967 Shelby GT500, the limited run of 2022 Mustang Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition fastbacks will be finished in a classic and exclusive Brittany Blue exterior paint, inspired by the original hue. Designed and engineered by Ford Performance as the most powerful street-legal Ford ever built, the 2022 Mustang Shelby GT500 harnesses world-class muscle and powertrain technologies to attain supercar levels of performance. Features include a first-in-class 7-speed dualclutch transmission, race-bred control strategies and advanced drive modes. Mustang Please Turn to Page 28 www.IneedOEMparts.com

Experts: ADAS Safety Potential Goes Hand in Hand With Consumer Education By Lurah Lowery Tarik Bolat, CEO and co-founder of autonomous driving tech company GPR, wrote in an Automotive News opinion piece that many motorists turn off safety features, such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), because they think they’re not working properly. Bolat also says drivers don’t yet see the safety potential of ADAS and that the systems “as currently designed aren’t working for consumers.” “While the industry works to enhance road safety tech to surpass
the ability of human drivers, it must also change public perception to ensure users are comfortable — and confident — in fully and semi-autonomous systems,” he wrote. “New technologies are enabling manufacturers to move at pace to address critical performance gaps, but consumer education must be brought up to speed to fully unleash the benefits of an autonomous driving future.” CCC Intelligent Solutions also explored this topic and found that “while the growing list of available safety features is sought by over half
of drivers, many have a complicated perception of ADAS and its benefits.” While 84% of drivers feel all ADAS features promote safe driving, 70% disable them, according to CCC. “The reasons behind this vary, ranging from a belief that features were not working properly (41 percent), finding the noises/lights distracting (41 percent), or feeling the technology was not needed (30 percent),” CCC’s 2021 Crash Course Midyear Report states. “The good news is that this is not the case for most as only slightly more than one-third of drivers (38 percent) turn off

features regularly.” A survey of 290 consumers conducted for CCC found that 3 in 5 said they purchased a vehicle with ADAS “to keep me and my family safe.” Despite this, 54% said they believe certain ADAS features can actually increase the chance of an accident. Owners of ADAS-equipped vehicles are willing to pay for repairs of
ADAS features but have high expectations, according to CCC. Seventy-one percent expect their ADAS “to work just as well as it did pre-collision, while one-quarter (24 percent) expect it to be slightly less effective.” This points to the expectation most owners have of repairers to return vehicles to the condition they were in before they were damaged by following OEM repair pro-
cedures and conducting pre- and post scans as well as calibrating camera and sensor systems that ADAS uses to function. In this year’s Crash Course Midyear Report, CCC says the COVID-19 pandemic lowering traffic counts — leading drivers to speed and increasing acciADAS Please Turn to Page 18

ADAS From Page 17 dents — tends to decrease the effectiveness of ADAS. “With traffic moving at higher speeds, ADAS may not be able to avoid a crash altogether.” CCC notes too that the $1.2 trillion federal Infrastructure Investment Jobs Act, among other items, authorizes U.S. DOT to mandate ADAS including forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist in all passenger vehicles. “It also requires the DOT to update its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) to establish performance test criteria for crash avoidance technology; create ratings to assess vehicle safety related to pedestrians and cyclists; and to establish roadmap to regularly update NCAP based on feedback from vehicle safety stakeholders,” CCC says. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy recently criticized the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)’s NCAP and said it “fails consumers” by not including collision avoidance and other safety technologies in its ratings. In May, a Consumer Reports survey found that 47,000 of its members
who own 2017-2022 model year vehicles “like car safety technology best when it helps them see what they sometimes can’t, such as checking blind spots or obstacles hidden behind their vehicle.” Respondents also favored adaptive cruise control and lane centering assist, especially older drivers. According to Consumer Reports, “newer cars get higher satisfaction ratings, indicating that these systems are improving over time.” While more than half of respondents told Consumer Reports the two features make driving less stressful, Consumer Report Vehicle Technology Manager Kelly Funkhouser said it’s important to understand “they’re designed only to make driving easier.” “Some of these systems work really well at making driving less stressful, so it’s easy to become complacent,” she said in the CR article. “But as soon as drivers let their guard down, something could quickly go wrong with the system. The driver must stay vigilant and in control of the vehicle at all times.” A recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) survey of more than 1,000 drivers focused on lane centering, automated lane changing, and driver monitoring found that consumer
interest is strong but “drivers appear to prefer partially automated features that require them to stay engaged in driving,” according to Alexandra Mueller, the survey’s primary designer. “For example, lane centering and automated lane changing come in ‘hands-free’ versions that allow drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel under certain conditions and ‘hands-on’ versions that require their hands always be on the wheel,” an IIHS news release on the survey results states. “More drivers said they would prefer the hands-on version of the features.” Going back to Bolat’s take on automated technologies, he wrote that he believes “automated vehicles will soon meet consumer needs.” “AVs [autonomous vehicles] of the future hold the potential to surpass human drivers in safety and efficiency. With new, enhanced sensor systems, advanced driver-assistance technology can be an important accelerant of full autonomy. However, none of the benefits will be recognized without consumer buy-in, and, by extension, consumer education.” Reprinted Content: Copyright © 2022. DRIVEN COMMUNICATIONS INC. All Rights Reserved.n

segment in terms of dynamic performance. Compact dimensions, intelligent lightweight design for the body and chassis, near perfect 50:50 weight distribution and optimized aerodynamics create a vehicle with a true excellent sporting pedigree. The agility, steering precision and cornering dynamics of the new BMW 2 Series Coupe are significantly improved over the predecessor model. Wider tracks, carefully adjusted wheel camber values and an up to 12 percent increase in static torsional rigidity for the body all play a role. While the new BMW 2 Series Coupe exceeds its predecessor in terms of performance, the comfort levels it offers in everyday use remain at the same high level. The Adaptive M suspension, standard on the new BMW M240i xDrive Coupe, allows drivers the widest possible spread between sport and comfort-oriented settings. The Adaptive M suspension combines the characteristics of M Sport suspension with electronically controlled shock absorbers. Continuously adjustable valves allow the damping force to be adjusted at each wheel individually and as a function of vehicle load. Switching between the various Driving Experience Control modes produces a clearly perceptible variation in the damping characteristics – from the well-balanced long-distance comfort of COMFORT mode through to the highly dynamic set-up activated in SPORT PLUS. The ADAPTIVE setting, the steering, damping and accelerator responses along with the transmission’s shift characteristics are automatically adjusted to suit the driving style. Navigation data can also be used to proactively prepare the car in advance for an upcoming intersection or corner. Interior Design Inside the new BMW 2 Series Coupe, sports-car flair meets a premium ambience that represents a clear leap forward from the predecessor model. The latest interpretation of the driver-focused cockpit design is defined by the driver-focused arrangement and operation of the displays and controls. The BMW Controller, gear selector lever, Start/Stop button, Driving Experience Control switch and numerous other function buttons are grouped within a modern-looking control panel in the center console. Audio, Connectivity and My BMW App The BMW Digital Key enables customers to lock and unlock their new BMW 2 Series Coupe via Near Field Communication (NFC) with their Apple iPhone, making a conventional car key superfluous. Holding the smartphone up to the door handle opens the car. The Digital Key can be set up using the My BMW App. The car owner can share access with up to five other users and has the option of creating a configuration for young drivers which restricts top speed, engine power, maximum radio volume and more.n

SkillsUSA Championships, Held This Year on June 22-23 in Atlanta SkillsUSA has announced the winners of its annual SkillsUSA Championships, career competition events that showcase the most accomplished career and technical education students in the nation. In the Championships, held this year on June 22-23 in Atlanta, Georgia, high school and college students competed in 107 trade, technical, and leadership fields. Students advanced to the Championships through competitions at the local and state levels with state winners going on to the national stage. Among the automotive fields included in the competition are three directly related to collision repair: Automotive Refinishing Technology, Collision Damage Appraisal, and Collision Repair Technology. In each field, gold, silver, and bronze winners were announced at the high school and college levels. In the Collision Repair Technology field, at the high school level, the gold medal was presented to Seth Christmas of Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork, Utah; the silver to Shane Webb of the Vanguard-Sentinel Career & Technology Center in Tiffin, Ohio, and the bronze to Riley Collier of the OCM BOCES I.E. Henry Campus in Syracuse, New York. At the college level, the gold medal was awarded to Olivia Peterson of the College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois; the silver to Luke Moore of Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, and the bronze to Tanner Friesen of Ridgewater CollegeWillmar in Willmar, Montana. “It was great to be back in person and we had an amazing group of volunteers that helped with set up, coordination, and judging,” Jason Bartanen, director of induswww.IneedOEMparts.com

Bartanen has been part of the Collision Repair Technology committee for 23 years, and served for the first time this year as CRT “tech chair.” “While our numbers were down from previous live events (19 post-secondary and 29 secondary contestants vs. our usual 70+ combined contestants), the quality of competition was as tight as ever with only a few points separating our top medalists,” Bartanen said. “Overall, the level of competition was on par with previous events with several high scores in each of the segments.” Bartanen noted that Peterson “joins an elite group of young ladies to stand atop the podium in CRT,” a group he said numbers “certainly fewer than five, and probably only two or three.” At the high school level, he said, Webb’s silver medal “continues an impressive run of medalists from Vanguard-Sentinel in Tiffin, OH; as far as collision repair, they have become a national powerAugust 2022
house and have had medalists (a significant portion gold) over the past decade.” In the Automotive Refinishing Technology (ART) field, at the high school level, the gold medal went to Julian Mountford of Northeast Technology Center-Afton in Afton, Oklahoma; the silver to Ashleigh Maloney of Live Oaks JVS in Milford, Ohio, and the bronze to Ethan Tucker of the Walker Career Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. At the college level, the gold medal was awarded to Dylan Miller of MSU Billings-COT in Billings, Montana; the silver to Preston Paulson of Northeast Community College in Norfolk, Nebraska, and the bronze to Neal Huber of North Idaho College in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. ART co-chair Jessica Neri, commercial regional manager for refinish commercial coatings for PPG, said it was evident that the instructors had prepared their students well for the competition. Hendrick Automotive Group partners with Richmond Community College on Accelerated Training for Automotive Techs Hendrick Automotive Group is partnering with Richmond Community College to build one of the top educational centers in the country for automotive technicians. Hendrick Automotive Group Chairman & CEO Rick Hendrick joined RichmondCC president, Dr. Dale McInnis, to announce plans for the “Hendrick Center for Automotive Training,” a 15,000-square-foot, stateof-the-art facility to be located on the Hamlet, North Carolina campus. The automotive technician program will be modeled after RichmondCC’s Electric Lineman program, which provides a solid foundation of skills and training within a short span of time. Automotive technician students likewise will complete the intense, accelerated program in 16 weeks and be qualified to go to work immediately and begin their careers in the automotive industry. “We have found that an intensive cohort-based, short-term training program that provides students with the skills, knowledge and competencies that employers are desperately seeking in a fraction of the time and fraction of the cost to the students and families,” Dr. McInnis said. The Hendrick Family Foundation is making a $500,000 donation to the development of the educational center. The Richmond Community College Foundation is matching that donation, and the Foundation for the Carolinas is donating $250,000. An additional $3.4 million is needed to support the development of the program. Sen. Tom McInnis, who has been key in securing state funding for short-term workforce training at RichmondCC, guaranteed his support for the new program. “This is a red letter day in Richmond County, but not only Richmond County, but every county 30 Southern Automotive Journal

Santa Fe’s large DLO enhances the feeling of openness for occupants with generous amounts of natural light. In addition, rear cargo area volume has increased by one-half cubic foot through optimization of the interior packaging. Powertrains 2021 Santa Fe offers three new and improved powertrain options. The standard powertrain is a Smartstream 2.5-liter direct-injected (DI) and multi-point injected (MPI) four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the former 2.4-liter engine. This standard four-cylinder engine produces an estimated 191 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and an estimated 182 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm for effortless driving in a wide variety of conditions. The powertrain also features Idle, Stop and Go (ISG) capability to maximize efficiency in various heavy traffic 34

conditions. Santa Fe also offers a highoutput Smartstream 2.5-liter directinjected four-cylinder turbocharged engine coupled with an all-new eight-speed wet dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This all-new powerplant produces an estimated 277 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and an estimated 311 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,500 rpm for brisk acceleration and effortless highway cruising. The wet dual-clutch transmission offers numerous benefits when mated to the turbocharged engine, including high-precision shift response, greater efficiency through reduced parasitic losses and increased torque capacity via the enhanced lubrication of the oil-based wet clutch design. mum power and efficiency, especially at mid- to high engine speeds. Conversely, multi-point injection helps to reduce emissions at lower rpm and lower engine torque loads. Together, these two injection systems are synchronized to yield ideal power, efficiency and low emissions throughout the full range of engine speeds and operating conditions. Eight-Speed Automatic Transmission The eight-speed transmission for the standard 2.5-liter engine provides quick and crisp shifts for an engaging and efficient driving experience. The automatic transmission adds ratio range at both the top and bottom of output speeds allowing for extra thrust off-the-line and a quieter, more fuel-efficient trip on the interstate. A multi-disc and individually controlled hydraulic channel torque converter improves responsiveness by expanding the direct connection band, while a downsized oil pump and double ball bearings minimize frictional losses. acceleration is reduced from a redesigned isolation pad in the instrument panel structure. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems Santa Fe features Hyundai’s latest SmartSense advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). A series of sensors and systems often restricted to luxury SUVs combines to potentially warn the driver and help take action in the event of a potential collision. Meanwhile, other ADAS systems can help the driver perform certain tasks using the SUV’s multiple radar sensors, ultrasonic sensors and cameras. Digital Key The Hyundai Digital Key app allows smartphones to control selected vehicle systems remotely. Users can lock and unlock the vehicle, activate the panic alert and start the engine. Digital Key allows owners to leave traditional keys at home and allows secure sharing of keys
with family and friends. The level of access to different vehicle functions can be tailored to each shared key user for a defined period. For additional convenience in cases such as using a valet service, Digital Key can also work via a Near Field Communication (NFC) card. Digital Key is currently compatible only with phones using the Android operating system. Remote Smart Park Assist Remote Smart Park Assist, a segment-exclusive vehicle technology, allows owners to park and retrieve their Santa Fe from the tightest of parking spaces from outside the vehicle, a very convenient feature. Before a driver attempts to load passengers or luggage, the remote parking function can prove particularly useful, bringing the vehicle out of a tight space. The driver simply uses the smart key to drive the SUV forward or backward, into or out of a parking space, garage or any tight parking situation.n

USA Skills From 25 Neri said this was the first year that students were judged on the application of UV primer, which had been offered as a demonstration event in 2019. Although “we were all a little nervous” about how that aspect of the competition might go, “we were blown away by how well the students did,” she said. Though the field of competitors, usually numbering in the 70s, was down to 54 this year, Neri said, “every single one of those 54 students did a great job on UV primer.” With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the competition to be canceled in 2019 and held virtually last year, organizers faced their share of challenges in resuming the championship in a new venue, Neri said. Thanks to “our instructors, and the community who are passionate about teaching students what they need to know to be successful in this industry,” the competition “went spectacularly,” she said. In the Collision Damage Appraisal field, at the high school level, the gold medal went to Landen Rex of Lehigh Career & Technical Institute in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania; the silver to Alexandra Drew of the EHOVE Career Center in Milan, Ohio, and
the bronze to Jesse Manuel of Aims Community College-Windsor of Greeley, Colorado. At the college level, the gold medal was awarded to Jamie Frey of Aims Community CollegeWindsor in Greeley, Colorado; the silver to Andrew J Harmes of Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the bronze to Jakob Shiner of Metropolitan Community College of Omaha, Nebraska. SkillsUSA national officer Christopher Anderson addressed the crowd at the start of the ceremony, saying he had been “inspired and encouraged by each of you this week.” “We overcame a lot to be here in person today,” Anderson said. “We’ve gone from participating in conferences virtually to competing face to face with competitors from all across the country. We’ve seen advisors and members engage with our competitors and strive for success. This has given me a renewed strength of sense for the future American workforce. SkillsUSA members, you are going to close the skills gap.” The SkillsUSA Championships are “a place for us to hone our skills, our knowledge, and our demonstration of leadership. While every competitor is a champion, we are here this evening
to honor the national medallion recipients,” he said. “We are excited to see what you can all can do to bring to the future of the career and technical education fields.” Among those in attendance were U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and Assistant Secretary Amy Lloyd, who sent Neri an email after the event. “I so enjoyed talking with you at SkillsUSA – and the following morning, I shared how impressed I am by your lived experience, exemplifying what we seek for all our students, in my remarks at the Call to Action Forum with Advisors,” Lloyd wrote. “I really appreciate all you’re doing for supporting the education and skills of our next generations.” Closing the event, national officer Caroline Daley congratulated the competitors and thanked the many sponsors who make the event possible. “Everything that we’ve accomplished at this conference was possible because we worked as one united. I witnessed this unity at every event, every competition. Even tonight, as I watched champions celebrate and cheer each other on,” Daley said. “You’ve shown yourselves to be champions throughout this whole conference – heck, throughout the whole year. I’ve been utterly amazed by all of you,” she said.n

NADA Responds to FTC’s Proposed Vehicle Pricing, Advertising Rule NADA President and CEO Mike Stanton on Thursday released the following statement in response to the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) proposed rule affecting franchised auto dealers: “The FTC’s proposed rule would impose a vast array of new, completely unwarranted, redundant and ineffectual requirements that will cause great harm to consumers by increasing prices, extending transaction times, and making the customer Insurance From Page 10 lights the manufacturing industry as an example, finding American manufacturers see an ROI of 42% on their ESI programs. While providing employees high quality health insurance is the right thing to do for workers, the report shows how it makes business sense. Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the Protecting Americans’ Coverage Together (PACT) campaign. The report from Avalere looks across industries at trends that drive 38

experience much more complex and inefficient. “Unfair and deceptive acts or practices in any part of the vehicle advertising, sales or financing process are reprehensible and should continue to be policed by federal regulators, including the FTC. But the Commission has failed to support or justify that this proposed rule is warranted in the market. “It is imperative that regulators conduct proper, thorough and evi-
dence-based analyses before proposing rules that would have such drastic ramifications on consumers and market participants, especially small businesses. Instead, what the FTC is proposing here would inject massive amounts of inefficiency and complexity into the vehicle sales process at a time when the entire auto industry is united behind an effort to simplify and streamline vehicle sales and pricing policies, shorten transaction times and improve the customer experience.”n
ROI higher and lower. Avalere highlights the manufacturing industry as an example, finding American manufacturers see an ROI of 42% on their ESI programs. “Employee-sponsored health insurance is a win-win for employers and employees,” said Katie Mahoney, Vice President of Health Policy at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. “We know employees place a high value on quality health insurance in the workplace, and now we have more evidence that employers benefit significantly from investing in these programs as well. Employer-provided coverage is the backbone of the American health care system, and this report reinforces that any reforms should build off this model that is good for workers and companies alike.” “Improving productivity and wellness make America more competitive and prosperous,” said Joel White, President of the Council for Affordable Health Coverage. “While employers offer health coverage to improve the health and welfare of their employees, employees and their families benefit significantly. This study shows that Congress and the Administration must work to expand job-based coverage, not weaken it. “Manufacturers are in the business of innovating and delivering bestin-class products to their customers,” said Robyn Boerstling, Vice President,
Infrastructure, Innovation and Human Resources Policy at the National Association of Manufacturers. “That philosophy extends to the benefits provided to their employees, and this report further validates that offering comprehensive and innovative health benefits is not only the right thing to do but also critical to attracting and retaining the best talent. We are proud that approximately 99% of NAM member companies offer health benefits to employees, and working Americans understand the value and competitiveness of employer-sponsored health care.” “As an employer, knowing who we are caring for and the communities they come from gives us the advantage of providing access to quality, affordable care to our team and their families,” said Vermeer Corporation. “It is an incredibly important part of how we care for our people.” The study, which examined employers with 100 or more employees, defined ROI as “the monetary value of benefit for each dollar employers invest in healthcare coverage. Investment in ESI may include health insurance premiums, wellness programs, direct medical expenses, administrative costs associated with processing medical claims, and other costs associated with providing health insurance. Avalere calculated the ROI derived from ESI by dividing the total employer benefits by the total costs of providing ESI.”n
