2014 is here for the best.

Dear Members As we say farewell to 2013, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each one of you for being part of a wonderful year at Dorado Beach. Members participation at our facilities and events have not been this high in many years. I also would like to express our deepest gratitude to each and every one of our staff for their passion, enthusiasm and commitment to Dorado Beach and our membership. As I reach my second year anniversary at Dorado Beach, I look back and feel proud of the improvement that the team has made to better the facilities and the experience for our club members. As we continue, I promise that you will see more changes and improvement during 2014.

Following that same note, we would like to thank all of you whom participated in our membership survey. We received the results and will be developing action plans based on your comments to follow-up and improve those areas that needs attention. We have already started improving areas that were identified in the survey as “Need Improvement”. One of these areas was to purchase new Golf Carts. We purchased 180 new Golf Carts as well as 6 new Beverage Carts. This will improve your overall experience in the golf course. Another improvement recently addressed was to add additional seating to the bar area at Zafra. Right before the festive season, we added 42 additional seats that will enhance the dining experience as our bar and lounge area are heavily visited during the weekends by families. These upcoming months are filled with a variety of great activities for all to enjoy. The first Mercado Dorado of the year will be held on February 15th on its new venue at the Watermill. Don’t miss out on “Encanto al Jazz” at Encanto Beach Club the following day on Sunday 16th to enjoy an evening of great jazz music in a most beautiful setting. Fun Land is back and will be held on Saturday 22nd with new and exciting activities for the whole family to enjoy! The ladies Member & Guest Tournament is coming up fast on February 27th and will certainly be one to remember! Sign up now at the Pro Shop. On March 20th we will be having a Wine Seminar with a professional Sommelier. This is a great opportunity to further your knowledge on the different wines and how to properly pair them with your dish. In an effort to increase our member offerings, Dorado Beach has partnered with the PGA TourAcademy. This program brings it all together with top instructors and the most advance teaching technology. Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished golfer, the PGA Tour Academy Professionals will teach you the secrets to perfecting your swing and your game. The pilot program will start January 25th through the end of April. You may contact Robert Birtel at 787-626-1010 or rbirtel@doradobeach.com for more details. And last but not least, it is with great pleasure that we announce that WTA Tennis Pro Monica Puig has signed on as Dorado Beach’s Touring Pro. She will be doing special clinics and appearances at the club throughout the year as availability comes up in her tour calendar. Be on the lookout for these pop-up events to be announced all year long! I look forward to a great 2014 and hope that this New Year will be full of health, happiness, and good fortune for you and your loved ones. Looking forward to see you around the club, enjoying the Dorado Beach Life Style! Warm Regards,

How long have you been working in Dorado Beach? A: I have been working in Dorado Beach for the past 44 years J: I have been working in Dorado Beach for the past 39 years

Spotlight Adalberto “Bejuco” Maldonado & Juan Martinez - Golf Operations

What is your most memorable experience here at Dorado Beach? A : On one occasion, near the year 1973, there was a group of United States Presidents that came to the club on vacation. A hand-picked group of outstanding employees with good service records were given the opportunity to meet them and fortunately I was one of them. J: One time a guest who lived in United States called me up from his club so that I could instruct his employees on how to properly maintain and clean golf shoes. This was a great experience for me as it showed me how much my work was appreciated. Also when I was named Employee of the Year in 2001.

What is your vision of a perfect day at the Resort? A: To enjoy all of the different areas the Resort has to offer, specifically enjoying a great round of golf. J: Simply enjoying a great day of golf at one our courses and taking in the beauty of our little piece of paradise.

New Year’s Resolution:

Fitness and Wellness

“Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary because health is worth more than learning.”

What is the most rewarding part of working here? A: The satisfaction of being provided a steady job so that I could provide for my family all these years and put my 4 children through college. J: When our members and guests express their satisfaction with my work and give positive feedback to my supervisor.

Breakfast with Santa & Gingerbread House Workshop Santa came to Dorado Beach! On Sunday, December 8th the children at Dorado Beach were treated to an exciting visit by Santa. Families enjoyed a hearty breakfast while Santa and his helpers took pictures with all the children and listened to their Christmas gift requests. After breakfast, Santa and the children went to the Pavilion where the Gingerbread House Workshop took place. Everyone’s creativity was put to work on decorating the pre-assembled gingerbread houses. Beautiful designs were created by the families to the tune of background classic Christmas music. A great time was had by all!

2.

As most of you have noticed we seem to get a lot of rain in Puerto Rico. In 2013 we received over 100 inches or rain, our previous record was around 80 inches of rain. Either way you look at it, that’s a lot of rain! Even with all the rain, I love seeing our faithful golfers enjoying the course in what I call “British Open Conditions”. I thought this would be a great time to give players of a few tips when playing in wet conditions. The most important thought you want to have when playing in wet conditions is to hit the ball first. A very common miss in wet conditions is to hit behind the ball, commonly referred to as “fat”. In order to ensure ball first contact:

3. The Masters Pro – Am, April 12, 2014 on the East Course. Members will blind draw for a Professional partner who is playing in the Masters Tournament. The members net score combined with the Professionals score on Masters Saturday will be the team score. The Member with the lowest combined score will win the Green Jacket. The cost of the event is $75 per player.

1. Grip Down on Club 2. Place the ball slightly back in your stance 3. Place 60% of your weight on your front foot 4. Swing Smooth.

4. Dorado Beach Men’s Member Guest, May 2-4, 2014 on the Sugarcane and East Courses. This is the premier Men’s Golf Event on the Dorado Beach schedule. The Member Guest is a two person net match play round robin event. Players will enjoy food, drinks and parties all weekend long. Please mark you calendars as the event is sure to fill up.

If you have any questions regarding your golf game please contact the Golf Professional Staff.

5. As Dorado Beach continues on its quest as an international leader in the Growth of the Game of Golf, we are thrilled to continue or relationship with the US Kids Foundation. This past fall we hosted our first tour and we are excited to start our Spring Tour April 27th. The US Kids tour gives our young players the opportunity to learn, compete, and grow as individuals through the game of Golf. Participants of the tour will accumulate points based on how well they finish in the events. Juniors accumulating enough points will qualify for Regional, National and International events. The highlight of the tour is qualifying for the World Championships in Pinehurst, North Carolina and Tour will provide all juniors, no matter skill level an opportunity to play and learn and compete. These events will be a great additional opportunity for Junior to play here at Dorado Beach. Junior golfers 18 and under may participate.

If you follow these four steps you will give yourself a great chance to hit a Solid Shot!

Thank you. – Robert Birtel

Talking About Tennis

February 2014

I hope you all had a great holiday Season. We were super busy at the tennis courts and are looking forward to some exciting developments in 2014. To highlight this news is the signing of Monica Puig as our Touring Pro. She will be associated with Dorado Beach and will be doing special clinics and appearances at the club throughout the year. I spoke with Monica’s agent while they are in Australia preparing for the Australian Open and she is really excited to be associated with Dorado Beach. Monica really broke out last year reaching a career high of #44 in the world while reaching the 4th round of Wimbledon. She is currently ranked #57 on the WTA Tour which gives her automatic entry in the Aussie Open. I know we will all stand behind her during the Aussie Open. Be on the lookout for announcement for our first Monica Puig Day at the club. February 4th, we will kick off our FREE introduction to tennis clinic. This clinic will be held every Wednesday morning at 9AM and is open to anyone who has never played tennis before or who has not played tennis for a long time. We want to introduce the basics, including strokes, scoring, and strategy in this class. To sign up for the class please check in at the fitness desk or call me at 939-202-3644.
