Members Only: Unique privileges attract new young families.
Rising to higher standards.
Dear Members
I want to thank everyone that participated in last year’s Member survey. We will be sending out under separate cover the results of the survey and a brief explanation as to what management is implementing to correct these issues and will follow up to those issues that the majority of Members wanted to see changed. As I reported in the last newsletter, Dorado Beach is now part of the TPC Network of clubs which will give our members the opportunity to play on over 35 nationally recognized outstanding golf facilities located throughout the United States, such as TPC Sawgrass, TPC Boston, TPC Myrtle Beach, and TPC Scottsdale. Our members will receive discounts on greens and cart fees and in some cases green fees are waived and you will only pay cart fees when you play at these facilities. This unique opportunity to join the TPC Network of clubs gives Dorado Beach Resort & Club the national recognition it deserves throughout the world as one of the finest golf facilities in the Caribbean.

The renovations to the Pavilion are going well and should be completed by the end of April. The Pavilion will now have air conditioning, a new kitchen and state of the art audio/visual capabilities. The Pavillion is the perfect venue for your next business meeting, wedding or birthday party. You may contact Carmen Ramos at 787-626-1030 to reserve today. The club has begun to repave the cart paths on Sugarcane and we expect the project to be completed by the middle of May. We certainly appreciate your patience during this lengthy process. The basketball court was renovated last month and looks amazing, just in time for the spring basketball leagues to start. The renovations to the Fitness Center were also completed last month with new carpeting throughout, new equipment added as well as new fitness classes added for your enjoyment. As previously discussed, the Tennis courts are still planned to be converted to Hard Tru courts later this summer. Please join me in recognizing the Watermill Staff, for all of their outstanding service to Dorado Beach. Dorado Beach is the place to be… don’t miss all we have to offer.
Warm regards,
David R. Tyson, CCM CAM General Manager / COO

Fitness and Wellness AUDITIONING - We Want You!... We want your success story. We are looking for a new role model to be featured as “fitness star” on our display at your fitness center. Share your story of what it took to get you to your goals, weather that was training for an event, trying to get back into your favorite jeans or simply and increased quality of life through healthy lifestyle changes. Help motivate our community to be well, be a featured role model of wellness. Weight machines vs. Free Weights This is a hot debate and can lead to a lot of confusion when planning your workout routine. What are the plusses and minuses of machines vs Free Weights? Allow me to “weigh in”. There is a time and place for both methods of strength training. The first question I would ask is; what are your goals? The second question would be; do you have any risks or injuries? The answers to these two questions can really affect the answer to the debate. Machines are wonderful for helping to strength train specific muscles within a very specific range of motion. They are wonderful when you are recovering from an injury (when used properly), if you have difficulty with balance or stabilizing without support. Machines are also wonderful if your goal is hypertrophy (getting swole i.e: looking for muscle size gains) when
combined with other exercises isolating muscles to the point of fatigue. Free Weights are great for all goals, when used with good form and technique. When you use weights without the support of a bench and a fixed range of motion you are using more muscles combined. More muscles have to work to stabilize and support the body through the entire range of motion. Essentially when your goal is to tone and or lose weight you are going to get more bang for your buck (buck being time in this case) with free weights as opposed to jumping from
supported machine to supported machine only working small muscle groups at a time. Don’t get me wrong – any exercise when done correctly is better than no exercise. There is a place for both in your fitness routine. Don’t be afraid to try something new. But PLEASE be safe, be sure that you are using the equipment properly and with good form to ensure a successful journey to your fitness and wellness goals. If you have feel you need a little guidance to help you get there book a few sessions with a personal trainer to work on a program that will work for you.
Homeopathy - A Prescription for Pain Relief diluted natural substances to relieve symptoms. Active ingredients of homeopathic medication are of animal origin, plant and diluted mineral. The homeopathic medicine works naturally with your body without causing drowsiness or insomnia, does not present risk of overdose and also interact with other medications, it may be useful for several different conditions. The route of more effective administration for the homeopathic medicine is under the tongue (sublingual absorption).
Homeopathy is a treatment modality difficult to understand (people think that these small pellets can be as effective). There are approximately 100 million of Europeans using homeopathic medicine, this medicine is a leader in alternative treatment for pain. Homeopathy is a therapeutic method that uses highly
Know that all substance pharmacologically active, causes in a healthy and sensitive individual a set of symptoms that are characteristic of that substance and that call pathogenesis. Every sick person presents a characteristic clinical picture of his disease. There are a number of signs and symptoms that characterize the disease and which allow to make the diagnosis. To treat someone who is sick with a homeopathic medicine we take into account both the characteristic symptoms of the disease and the particular symptoms of the reaction of the patient with the disease. The homeopathic doctor, is one who habitually or preferably gives the homeopathic drug, to a sick person. First the doctor
makes a detailed history to explore the condition of the patient and performs all the supplementary tests necessary to reach the diagnosis of the disease. Once the diagnosis and on the basis of the clinical picture to present the sick, decide what is the most appropriate homeopathic treatment. This is very important because it shows that homeopathy is a therapeutic method that brings the doctor another safe and effective therapeutic weapon. Homeopathic medication is not specific to any particular disease but that is specific to a “sick way”, making that same disease in different people, can be treated with different drugs depending on the box's reaction that each patient presents and that same medicine could be used to treat different diseases provided that the clinical picture of the patient matches the pathogenesis of that drug. For this reason homeopathy is an individualized therapeutic.

Golf News Jeff Willenberg Director of Golf I am pleased to announce that we recently hired Mr. Randall Thompson as one of our PGA golf professionals. Randall previously worked in Maryland. Randall has considerable experience working in golf operations and has already made a positive impact to our team. We recently formed a Handicap committee in accordance with the USGA guidelines. Randall Thompson will be our handicap chairman and Mr. Etienne Totti del Valle and Mr. Russell Del Toro serving as committee members. The committee’s goal is to better educate and communicate to members and manage the GHIN in a way that promotes fairness for competition in events and regular play. If you have been on the golf courses recently, you may have noticed several different projects that are underway. On the East course we constructed a practice putting green next to the tee on hole 1, re-sodding green edges on all greens, and installing drainage in front of Hole #2. On the Sugarcane course, we have enlarged all of the greens to provide a larger putting surface and create more pin positions. Additionally, we are preparing to resurface the entire cart path trail, which when completed will provide a much more enjoyable ride. One of our goals this year was to enlarge and enhance our member golf events thru tournaments, clinics, and other activities that would allow all of us to enjoy this great game with fellow members and friends. As we head into April, we enter into one of the busiest times of the year on our tournament calendar.

Talking About Tennis Adam Lane Tennis Professional It is with great joy I announce that we will begin our conversion from hard courts to clay courts starting this summer. We will be installing 4 hydro-grid clay courts and keeping 1 hard court. The advantages of clay courts over hard courts are many. Two of the main reasons are less stress on the body and less down time because of the rain as the courts help absorb the moisture. These clay courts will differ from the ones in Dorado Beach East mainly in the way they are watered. Hydro-courts are constantly being watered from under the surface and remain moist all day. Above ground systems (DBE) are very hard to monitor as the water is affected by the wind and not all spots are covered when the wind is strong. With the completion of the court renovation we will be launching our 1st Club Championship tournament in the fall. Look out for more details in the next newsletter.
GoodWinds By: Karla Barrera- Morstad Co-Owner of Goodwinds
The Sky is the limit! When I started kitesurfing almost 16 years ago, there were no kitesurfing schools and the equipment didn't have any of the safety features that it has today. Windsurfers thought kitesurfing was a fad and that it was an experimental sport. At that time, since all the early adopters were learning, no one really knew how to teach. So most "kiters" like me, resorted to watching Robby Naish's Intro to Kiteboarding video. Needless to say, it was a rough start for the new water sports' “kid on the block”, with many kites tangled on trees and dozens of boards lost in the ocean. Luckily, the sport has come a long way in almost two decades since it started. Now the equipment is safer, with de-powering systems and quick-release mechanisms. There are schools like ours, Goodwinds, where students can learn from experienced instructors using a structured lesson program. And as a sport, now kitesurfing is one of the fastest growing sports in the world with professional competitive tours, and even a bid to be part of the 2020 Olympics.

So, what does it take to learn? At Goodwinds we recommend a minimum of 3 to 4 lessons of three hours each to learn the basic techniques and safety procedures. Most students take more lessons to ensure a faster progression and to feel safer during their learning process. Also, with Goodwinds students have the unique opportunity of learning with boat support, where the student is always escorted by one of our instructors on the water on a boat or ski, while he/she is riding the board. Do you have to be super strong and young to practice kite boarding? Kites come in many sizes which are matched to the weight of the rider, and the average wind conditions. Thus, combined with the advances in equipment safety and the availability of high quality instruction, you will see riders of all ages and sizes. Also, with kiteboarding, you wear a harness so the pressure is taken off your
arms and your body weight is used instead to counteract the pull of the kite. How do you sign up? For more information on Goodwinds lesson program please visit our website www.kitegoodwinds.com, email us at watersports@doradobeach.com or call us at 787-233-7862
Our students
Paco de Torres – “It feels great to be learning something new at 47. Definitely one of the coolest things I've done in my life. Recently I fired my psychiatrist, it's kiteboarding therapy from now on”. Ana Fiallo – “I love kitesurfing because it helps me take my mind off everything else and allows me to concentrate on only three things: my board, my kite and the wind. I also love the feeling of flying with the wind, and the adrenaline rush of the whole experience”. Steve Wiggins – “I am totally alive and in the present moment when kite boarding. Who needs meditation if there's enough wind. I am 58 and some of my new friends are 17! There is a kind of fellowship of kite boarders. Everyone is helpful and encouraging”. Javier Goveo - “It is challenging, combines the elements of water and wind plus the beautiful sun. You escape from reality and the only thing that matters is the ride. Anybody can do it, just be patient and take lessons with Good Winds. Learning with Good Winds makes you feel safe the whole time you are out there, no matter the conditions. (They know what they are doing) plus you become part of a special community that cheers you up and takes care of each other!!!! Louis –“Kitesurfing has awakened a desire to broaden myself in other areas of my life. If I could learn to kitesurf … I can do anything. May sound extreme but at 61 and with no watersports background, or athletic ability… That’s how it’s made me feel. It has made me feel young!”
