Summer 2015

As we continue to grow, so do our facilities.

Our club stands above the rest. Dear Members, We have had such a wonderful spring this year at Dorado Beach, with a variety of events for the whole family. This year we have made changes to our popular Mercado Dorado, which is now Mercado Urbano, the largest farmer’s market in the island and now being held on the Zafra Terrace. As this event continuously grows, please mark your calendars for the upcoming Mercado’s on Saturday, September 5th, Saturday, October 10th, Saturday, November 14th and Saturday, December 5th. These will feature a wide assortment of merchandise that will appeal to everyone. Remember that the success of this venture depends on your support and participation. We look forward to seeing you there! As we continue to grow, so do our facilities; I am happy to announce the completion of the Pavilion renovation. This wonderful facility offers 2,700 square feet of meeting space with state of the art built-in audiovisual and surround sound equipment, as well as a completely new kitchen. The Pavilion is the perfect venue for your company gathering or social event while you enjoy the beautiful views of our golf course.

As one project is completed, another begins as we get ready to convert our existing tennis courts to Hard Tru. You will be pleased to know there will be construction of an additional Hard Tru court, for a total of 5 tennis courts for your enjoyment. All of the courts will be lighted for night play. We expect to have this project completed by early November. We certainly appreciate your patience as we improve the club. As you may already be aware, Puerto Rico and Dorado Beach have been affected by a severe drought this year. We are seeing areas of landscaping that are failing. Our irrigation ponds are at historic low levels, so we are only watering the tees and greens on Sugarcane and Pineapples courses. Once we start receiving significant levels of rainfall we will begin to replace dead foliage and the grass will come back to life. We have developed an Employee Recognition program, recognizing employees each quarter who have been credited by our members and guests for outstanding service. You can assist us with the success of this program by verbally or in writing recognizing these members of our staff for their exceptional work. Continue to enjoy everything Dorado Beach has to offer!! Warm Regards,

David R. Tyson, CCM CAM General Manager/COO

9 Tips to Protect Your Skin This Summer Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can cause skin damage in as little as 15 minutes. Prolonged exposure and damage can lead to various forms of skin cancer, many of which, thankfully, are preventable. The sun isn’t the only skin-damaging predator — tanning beds, smoking and unhealthy diet can also have ill effects on the body’s outer layer. The key is to be sun savvy and know how to keep your skin healthy. Tammy Losee, offers nine tips to help protect your skin. 1. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. This is when the sun is most intense and produces the greatest chance of sunburn. If you must be outside during these hours, seek shade by using an umbrella, a tree or other type of shelter. Use protective clothing and sunscreen even when in the shade. 2. Use sunscreen when outdoors. Higher SPF numbers indicate increased protection. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using at least SPF 30. Use sunscreen even on cloudy or cool days as damage from the sun’s rays can still occur. Re-apply every two hours or after swimming or when sweating. Also, check the expiration date — shelf life is typically three years, less if it has been stored in high temperatures. 3. Wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection. Proper, protective sunglasses help prevent damage to the sensitive skin around your eyes, as well as cataracts. 4. Don the right head gear. A wide-brimmed hat can protect your face, ears and neck. If wearing a baseball cap, don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your neck and ears. Wear protective clothing that covers exposed areas. 5. Be aware of medications that increase your sensitivity to the sun. Some antibiotics and over-the-counter medications can make you

more sensitive to sunlight. Common drugs include antihistamines, such as Benadryl; nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like aspirin or ibuprofen; certain antibiotics, including Bactrim or Tetracycline; antidepressants; antipsychotics; and some oral diabetic medications. Check with your pharmacist regarding your medication side effects. 6. Protect youngsters. Children younger than six months should not use sunscreen but should be protected from the sun’s rays with protective clothing and shade. Children six months or older should have sunscreen applied regularly when outdoors. 7. Perform regular skin checks. Look for any changes to moles, freckles or birthmarks. Additionally, monitor any new skin changes that have occurred. Use a mirror to evaluate hard-to-see areas, and have regular skin evaluations by your health care provider or dermatologist. 8. Avoid the use of tanning beds. Tanning beds produce harmful UVA and UVB rays, which increase the risk for skin cancer, including melanoma — the deadliest form of skin cancer. There is also no proven evidence that use of tanning beds to obtain a base tan decrease your risk of sunburn. Beyond that, use of tanning beds increases the chance of developing cataracts and ocular melanoma. 9. Make healthy lifestyle choices. Maintain healthy skin by not smoking. Smoking damages collagen and elastin in your skin. Treat your skin gently by using mild soaps and daily moisturizers. Limit hot showers as this can strip essential oils from your skin. Pat dry after bathing to retain moisture in your skin. Eat a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and plenty of water. Engage in stress-reducing activity, and get regular sleep.

Yoga

Yoga is for everyone – especially – if you’re not perfect. When I tell people I teach yoga, the responses I hear most often are: – Oh, I can’t do yoga, I’m not flexible. – It’s been years since I’ve done anything physical, I’d fall over, and take everyone else down with me. – Yoga? Look at me – I’m not one of those tiny size 2’s (Yeah, me either!).

Here are 3 reasons why you need to stop making excuses and just do yoga: 1. You can find a class to suit your needs – if you’re new to yoga, look for gentle classes or beginner classes. These classes will help introduce you to the poses and the sequences, and will help you start building strength and flexibility. 2. Yogis are awesome – if you go to a studio, no one is judging you – and if they are, find another

The point of yoga is not to stick your foot behind your head, or to have some place to wear your cute Lululemon gear.

When you step into a class, you will be welcomed, you will be acknowledged, and you will be guided and supported. The yoga community is something you need – not something to be wary of.

The point of yoga is to reconnect you to the deepest part of you – to rediscover who you are, and then carry that out into the world. Yoga is awesome physical exercise, and yes, it’s going to help you lose weight, get strong, and feel great. But yoga also helps you get still, find peace, and remember who you are, why you’re here, and what you want out of life. And if you can bring that stillness, peace, and confidence from your practice into the rest of your life, life is going to change in amazing ways. I’m a real-life-living-breathing example of that.

I can tell you, when I came back to my practice, I could barely touch my shins in forward bend. The fact that I can do advanced poses now has nothing to do with me wanting to show off, and everything to do with me celebrating how far I’ve come in my own journey. When I’m in classes, I’m not looking around at the newbies thinking “ha! I can bind and she can’t!” I’m turning inward, and focusing on what’s going on with me… and so are all the other class participants. No one is even noticing that you’re wobbling, or that you’re not as flexible as they are. Trust me.

studio. The vast majority of yogis are caring people who are all on a journey just like you. Many yogis have been where you are and they relate to what you’re going through – regardless of what they look like now, and what they’re capable of on the mat now.

3. You need time for you – you just do. The only way out of your current situation is through it. And the only way through it is to get still, and spend some time with yourself. Yoga is perfect for that. Yoga is different than any other physical exercise out there. At first, you’re going to feel awkward, and out of touch. But, the amount of support, confidence and energy you will receive is beyond measure – and so worth a little discomfort in the beginning.

Talking About Tennis Adam Lane Tennis Professional As I write this I look at the window and see the start of the conversion of our tennis courts and moving of the sand volley ball court. We will be converting our existing hardcourts to clay courts, building and additional clay court, and lighting the remainder of the courts. When the project is finished we will have 5 hydro-clay courts with lights on all 5 courts. This is an incredible investment in the tennis facility. It will make our courts on par with any world-class facility. As many of you have heard, Hannah Appleyard couldn’t secure the proper working visa, so unfortunately, Hannah had to stop working. She has returned to Australia and is trying to come back and visit us on a tourist visa. As Hannah wrote to me and asked me to pass on, “As many of you already know I had to step down from my position as assistant tennis pro last month, as I was unable to attain the necessary work visa. It has been a whirlwind of emotions and I just wanted to thank everyone for their amazing support during the visa process and for everyone's love, encouragement, and friendship over the past 15 months while working at Dorado Beach! I came to Puerto Rico to travel and for the great work

opportunity, but I never imagined I would make the friends and family I have that will stay with me far beyond my time in Puerto Rico.”
