NEW SHOP ON THE BLOCK
Having spent 18 years in marketing and merchandising Lucy Reynolds’ life took a new direction when she qualified as a sommelier in 2021. “I’d always been interested in wine and whenever I travelled, I would try the local wine, seeking out something new and intriguing”. Later Lucy attended the Abri Create Self Employment course, which in turn led to grants and a bursary scheme – in conjunction with Portsmouth City Council, enabling Lucy to open her beautiful wine shop in Albert Road. Wines by The Sea, has an array of wine from around the world, which have been carefully researched and selected by Lucy in a bid to find the best quality wine at a reasonable price. The shop also stocks local craft beers, including Powder Monkey and Fallen Acorn from Gosport. Also, Staggeringly Good beer, in Portsmouth. Rum and Gin from The Portsmouth Distillery, Co plus Southsea Spirit by the Corner 53 Distillery at Clanfield. “Although the number of local vineyards are limited to English sparkling wines, I do try to support as many drinks business as I can, it’s a very important part of living in Southsea,” said Lucy.

alice and ivy
alice and ivy, the beautique right in the heart of Southsea is a sanctuary for skincare, makeup and well-being.
It’s hard to believe that we’ve been part of Southsea for almost one year and we’re still loving it! Our first birthday is in September and we’re looking ahead to the new season, new ranges, and products, as well as new events.
In store we’ve got fabulous new lipsticks and lip glosses from Tag Queen, wonderful home and body products from Kitchen Scents, and we are delighted to have become one of the stockists for the fabulous Southsea Bathing Hut. Pop in and try these along with our other fantastic ranges.
After the success of our style evenings in the spring, we’re excited to confirm that we’ll be hosting two Autumn-Winter style evenings on Thursday 6th and Wednesday 12th October. Tickets are £25 each and include a glass (or two) of fizz and a goodie bag. We’ve spotted a couple of key makeup trends that look great now but are also on point for AW22. The classic red lip is always on trend but wear it matte with dewy skin now and with a touch of blusher as Autumn approaches. And for those who are all about the eyes, a metallic shimmer eyeshadow is perfect paired with a black eyeliner – gold, silver and peacock colours will take you from summer sun to Christmas carols.

PROMOTING WELL-BEING IN SCHOOLS
Jane Prescott, Headmistress of Portsmouth High School
Positive health and well-being are important to maintain and never more so than at school. Children spend approximately 190 days a year at school which accounts for much of the year, and therefore educational establishments must consider how they promote well-being to students and staff. The last two years have been tough for everyone, but none more so than children whatever their age. They have missed socialising and attending those rites of passage events such as their prom or special trips and visits. They have not experienced normality and if schools are not proactive in helping young people navigate these testing times then it could lead to greater problems later. Schools must advocate a healthy lifestyle — this ranges from getting enough sleep to eating the right foods and exercising. It also includes gaining a perspective on what being happy means. Social media shows the life of those who post as interesting and exciting. The reality is often far from this perspective. Gaining a balance is important. Children show anxiety in certain circumstances and schools may help by introducing scenarios early on. For example, giving opportunities to speak to large and small groups — in class or to a whole year group. Children worry about failing and then will not risk answering questions in class, and creating a culture that allows them to be curious and feel confident is important. Many schools have a dedicated space where pupils may go if they are feeling anxious or generally unwell. At Portsmouth High School we are opening this September a well-being centre called Daffodil House. In this one area there will be resources which support health, and in particular mental health. Pupils are keen to work with each other providing mutual assistance. It is important to be proactive rather than reactive. Finding sports that children enjoy is crucial to participation. Traditional team games are not for all, and including individual sports helps all children become involved and feel included. Even at a young age it is important not to discourage children from exercise. Some schools have a daily walk round the playground as the children arrive in the morning and pupils join in the activity at any point. If schools are able to provide a central area for eating lunch this creates a culture which supports positive eating habits. Food technology or cookery lessons also provide for an opportunity to learn about different food groups and how to cook recipes from scratch. Those schools that have an area for growing vegetables find engaging children in producing fresh produce also promotes healthy eating. Children are much more likely to try food they have grown. Some traditional activities have been lost to the allure of screens. Schools promote reading and introduce the joy of sitting quietly with a book from quite a young age. This not only develops creativity and language but also is a distraction from social media and digital devices. Young people face pressures – examinations, friendships, navigating the modern technological world, and now the recent pandemic. This makes it more important than ever that schools take a proactive approach to helping pupils manage these challenges to develop healthy habits for healthy lifelong living.

AND THE WINNER IS…
Chinneck Shaw is celebrating a double helping of awards. We have been officially rated excellent in both the sales and lettings categories of the 2022 Best Estate Agent Guide. Compiled by independent industry experts, Property Academy, with the support of the UK’s largest property portal, Rightmove, the guide assesses and lists more than 25,000 estate agents on such criteria as customer service, marketing, and results.
RECOGNITION
Our excellent rating puts us in the top ten per cent of agents for sales and lettings nationally. This is both fantastic recognition for our team and a further source of peace of mind for our clients. If you are a property owner, landlord, or prospective buyer or tenant, you have the reassurance that you are officially working with one of the best estate agents in the country.
INDEPENDENT
The aim of the listings is to provide a useful, credible and independent indication of the quality of the agent,
which can help when choosing who to value your property and instruct. To create the guide, Property Academy and Rightmove check and rate every estate agency branch in the UK. These are scored against a unique set of performance and customer service criteria using a combination of data analysis and mystery shopping. To inform the guide, Property Academy surveys thousands of buyers, sellers, landlords and tenants each year to better understand their opinions and expectations of the home buying, selling and renting process.
GUIDE BACKGROUND
On its website: bestestateagentguide.co.uk Property Academy says: “With an estimated 25,000 estate agency branches in the UK, we know it can be difficult to choose and there is a lack of independent and trustworthy information to help you compare agents and find the best in your area. “This is why we decided to produce the Best Estate Agent Guide. “After twelve years of listening to the voice of the consumer and using the insights to inform estate agency businesses of the latest trends, opinions and opportunities, we decided to compare estate agents in order to provide the millions of people who sell or let their property each year in the UK with an independent and credible source of information to help them find the best estate agent for them.” Needless to say, all here at Chinneck Shaw are naturally thrilled with this prestigious industry recognition.
