Message from Mike Dear Innisbrook Members, Happy New Year! I hope everyone really enjoyed the Holiday Season with family and friends and are looking forward to a shiny New Year with new possibilities and good times ahead. We are especially excited to begin the New Year with a brand new inventory of rooms that have been completely renovated and we know our guests will find welcoming and comfortable. Also equally as exciting is the start of a very important time in Innisbrook’s history as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary throughout 2020. Watch for announcements all year-long as we introduce many fun ways to recognize and celebrate this important milestone together. January starts off with many fun events for our members such as the January Wine Dinner, the Golf Cart Gasparilla Invasion and a continuation of the very popular 3 Bites, 3 Wines series. You will see all of those details inside and I hope to see you there. As always, I welcome your thoughts and ideas on special events and activities you most enjoy, as well as new ways we can continually improve your membership experience. Please feel free to send me an email at mwilliams@innisbrookresort.com. Thank you in advance for sharing your suggestions. Wishing you each a fabulous New Year ahead and we hope you spend many days with us, making wonderful new memories. Let’s make 2020 our best year yet! Warmest regards,

Managing Director

From the Desk of the

Director of Golf Valued Members,

As many of you have already heard, The New World Handicap System is set to debut January 1, 2020. This will allow golfers to play on an equitable and fair basis around the globe. The new system includes a number of new concepts and terms for golfers around the world to learn. Here are five important things to know:

1.

our Handicap Index may change – but that is a good thing! Players from around the world now Y have an apples-to-apples handicap. Your new Handicap Index is more responsive to good scores by averaging the 8 best out of your 20 most recent scores. (Currently, it’s 10 out of 20 with a .96 multiplier.) Your new Handicap Index is determined by demonstrated ability and consistency of scores. In most cases for U.S. golfers, this changes less than one stroke.

2.

ou need to know your Course Handicap – In the new system, your Course Handicap is the Y number of strokes to play to par. This provides greater variance in that number and presents a change. Historically, it has represented the number of strokes to play to the Course Rating. This is good, as par is an easy number to remember. Target score for the day? Par plus Course Handicap. The Course Rating is more intuitive in calculations and accounts for competing from different tees.

3.

et Double Bogey – The maximum hole score for each player is limited to a Net Double Bogey. N This adjustment is more consistent from hole to hole than the Equitable Stroke Control procedure. Net Double Bogey is already used in many other parts of the world and the calculation is simple: Par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive.

4.

our Handicap Index is revised daily – One way handicapping is being modernized is a player’s Y Handicap Index updates daily if the player submitted a score the day before. This provides a fairer indication of a players’ ability in the moment. Don't submit a score? No update takes place.

5.

Safeguards in the new system – The new system has multiple safeguards integrated. – Limits extreme upward movement of a Handicap Index. – Automatically and immediately reduces a Handicap Index when an exceptional score of at least seven strokes better is posted. – Accounts for abnormal course or weather conditions and ensures scores reflect a differently played significantly different than it established Course Rating and Slope Rating.

These safeguards help maintain accuracy of a Handicap Index, greater integrity within the system and promote fun and fair play for golfers of all abilities.

pipeline | 4

Like most changes, this new system will be met with some resistance but I’m confident that once everyone gets used to it, they’ll see that it is a better, more universal system. Please let myself or any of our Golf Professionals know if you have any questions and we’ll be happy to assist. See you around the Club,

Bobby Barnes

Tennis at Innisbrook A Word from the Pro Dear Valued Member, Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a great Holiday. With the New Year, we are gearing up for the 7.0, 8.0 and 9.0 USTA Mixed Double Leagues, the Men’s Interclub and the 3.5 Level Men’s USTA Leagues of 55 and over and 65 and over. Please call the Tennis Desk at 727.942.5241 to sign up. I’d like to introduce our newest team member, Jamie Keitz. Jamie has an extensive career in stringing racquets at the highest level. Read about Jamie and her 2020 Stringing Program that she is planning. Whether helping a pro or an amateur, Jamie is excited to bring her experience to Innisbrook! Jamie feels that any level of tennis player deserves only the best and is looking forward to educating everybody on proper strings, grips, and racquets. DEVELOPING OUR NEW STRING PROGRAM WITH JAMIE For every third stringing labor, you will receive the fourth stringing labor free. We are also looking into starting a small customizing department. No player of any level should pick up their racquet and have it feel different than expected, so a simple Weight and Balance is all that's needed. Jamie plans to start a court consultation program. You and a Pro play while Jamie watches and then selects several racquets just for you. Most people don’t realize they are playing with racquets that are too old, too stiff, too old of strings, wrong grips, etc. This can cause tennis elbow and shoulder problems.

p i p e l i n e | 10

We hope to provide changes that help get everybody on the right track! Jamie is looking forward to meeting and seeing you on the court. Please help us welcome Jamie to Innisbrook Tennis! Joe Mattingly, Director of Tennis

Introducing JAMIE KEITZ · ATP/WTA Tour Stringer and Customizer · Traveled the tour to most tournaments · Worked hand and hand privately for many top professionals including Andre Agassi, Jen Capriati, Andy Roddick, Arantxa Sanchez · Worked with Wilson many years · Was trained to do on court consults from legendary stringer Roman Prokes

Tennis Tip of the Month The New Year has arrived, and if you’re like most tennis enthusiasts, you’re looking forward to more opportunities on the court to sharpen your skills. Even if you had a banner year in 2019, there’s always something to improve upon so make New Year’s resolutions specific to your tennis game. If you are not sure where to start, don’t sweat it. Below are New Year’s resolutions that can take your tennis game to the next level in 2020.

Master a New Technique Perhaps there are certain techniques or shots that you haven’t taken the time to learn. Or if you know how to do them, you’re not satisfied with your ability. Maybe your drop shot is ineffective, or your two-handed backhand needs work, or you’re not adept at returning high bounce shots. Whatever it is, you’ve recognized an “Achilles heel” in your game and are ready to eliminate that weakness to become a better, more well-rounded player.

Serve at Least One Bucket of Balls Every Week Developing an effective serve is one of the most important skills in tennis. For most players, the serve is their "Number One" problem area. Even if you’ve already developed a formidable serve, there’s always something you can do to improve your technique.

Footwork is one of the most vital—and yet overlooked— skills you can develop as a tennis player. Pros understand the importance of footwork. Watch footage of Roger Federer and notice how quickly he can maneuver around the court. It’s as if he has a psychic ability to know where his opponent will hit the ball because he’s always in place to return the shot. Novak Djokovic is the same way. He seems to be everywhere at once, and it’s because he has mastered solid footwork. Don’t let the year go by without resolving to improve your footwork seriously. Dedicate time each week to performing exercises and drills that will improve this vital area of your game.

Improve Your Overall Athleticism Great tennis players are great athletes above all else. If you watched videos of pros during their training sessions, you notice that much of the exercises they perform focus on improving overall athleticism and not just tennis-specific techniques. Top tennis players incorporate core exercises, plyometrics, weight training, hand-eye coordination drills and other techniques into their training regimen. This helps them become well-rounded athletes and directly impacts their proficiency as a tennis player. Developing an exercise regimen for yourself that helps you become a better overall athlete will carry skills over into on-court performances.

pipeline | 11

No matter where you fall on the serving spectrum, resolve to serve at least one bucket of balls every single week, week in and week out, for the entire year. Instead of focusing only on power, dedicate serious time to improve the finer points of your serve such as accuracy, placement, topspin, etc. Sharpening your serve will take your game to a new level.

Get Serious About Improving Your Footwork
