“O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.” (Al-Hasyr: 18)

Ahmad Baihaqy Headchair of Salam UI 23 Assalamu’alaikum, UI and Indonesia! 2020 has left us with a lot of memories and lessons. The memories of the days amidst pandemic that have never been felt by the previous generations. The lesson is that no matter how well we, humans, made the plan, there will be another factor affecting its success - The permission of Allah, the Almighty. To recall those special-lesson given days and to tell the world how we have learned from a lot of things happening, Salam UI presents International Humanity Newsletter (IHN) UI to crystallize those lessons and memories. Finally, I thank all the contributors that have sent their works to IHN Salam UI. Please do believe that every word that is written in IHN will be eternal, live, read by many people, and become an endless good deed for all of us. Ameen.

As devout human beings, let us always be grateful to Allah SWT who has seen His grace and guidance, so that today we can still feel the joy of living in a healthy state, in order to read this humanitarian magazine without feeling any shortage. In 2020, there were many natural disasters that resulted in a large number of casualties, many residents who suffered minor or severe injuries. Disasters that are currently still ongoing also continue to haunt every individual on earth, namely Covid-19, nobody knows when it will end. In the case of natural disasters, a lot of facilities and infrastructure have been damaged. Every tragedy is a trial, especially to test our humanity. The disasters that occur naturally invite our concern and empathy to go down hand in hand to help our fellow countrymen. A helping hand from us is expected and every donation will be based on awareness and sincerity, solely seeking the pleasure of Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala.

Adib Lutfi Headchair of PPI Istanbul 2020

I would like to thank the Bureau of Inter-National Relations SALAM UI 23 and all of you who have been willing to share and donate a little of their material in every disaster that occurs in this country. May Allah reward all the kindness that you all give. That is what I can say, I hope we all always draw closer to Him. That is all and thank you.

Felita Indonesian in Los Angeles, USA Assalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. All praises belong to Allah, the Almighty and the Most Merciful. When we all went into this thing in March (or April?), I tried to remain as positive as possible. I still believe everything I wrote in my 2020 list at the end of 2019, about how I want to come out of this time better than I was when it started, about how I dream about traveling, and many buckets of list. We can only worry about how we spend time better than last year, but then the spring turned to summer, summer to fall, and suddenly winter coming fast! And nothing really got better! Quite the opposite, in fact. During this pandemic I learned lots of things. How important the life is sometimes we forgot to thankful with. If you’re struggling this year just know that you’re not alone cause so many people struggling with the same thing. I thank to IHN for trusting me to be one of their speakers, so I can share my thoughts with people outside there and we can feel connected even though there’s distance between us. I hope you guys never stop spreading good things cause sometimes you don’t know your help means a lot to people who need it.

Lathief Mukti Headchair of PPI Brunei Darussalam 2020 is almost 365 days old, which means that the task of marking the time will be nearly completed and will be replaced with a new marker named 2021, but if asked for a flashback about this unique year none of us can describe it without sadness. After entering the beginning of last year with all hopes and new intentions prepared to leave 2019 decked with some of great conflicts that if we observe it, are nothing other than problem triggered by the handful of tiny individuals who couldn’t over come their ego. And by 2020, the Lord had a surprise, and that is to teach and remind his people about existence of the "invisible hand," that determines everything. He brought the Covid-19 pandemic that hit all mankind as a test, shortly after that the situation of the world became terrible, the virus spread quickly, millions dead and the vaccine still hasn't been found. But such circumstances was not worthy enough to make us think negative and pessimistic, let us believe the miracle and wisdom behind all this. To fight against the covid-19 pandemic, that has befallen indiscriminately, humans should work together, hopefully it will cause the return of love and humanity, regardless of differences in ethnicity, ideology and religion. Let’s take a look at a short quote from Arabic wisdom before closing this article as a provision for us to face 2021 better!

The rare year, 2020, many lessons have been given to us as humans. Thank you for the various types of gratitude signals that have been given. Starting from the condition of Covid-19 that has not got better, demonstrations of the omnibus law that were rife, the momentum to do a lot of good for others, see the deeper realities of society, build a sense of miss with friends and family, and have more time at home with family.

VOICES FOR 2020

- Yumna, pinhome.id

Humanity is the main and inherent part of life on earth. God has created man in a balance between heart, mind, and body, so that humans can play roles in life. However, roles are sometimes misused and misinterpreted. Roles that should be shared are dominated by personal interests, roles that should be mutually tolerant are mutually sentiment, and roles that should love each other are hurt each other's feelings. I hope everyone is aware that the role of humans is limited by time, so let's maximize the opportunities given to achieve peace in life.

Thank you for teaching us to explore wisdom and work within limitations. You force the system of human life order to change without permission. Many things cannot be realized according to dreams, but they are true promises of Allah. There is no difficulty without ease. Thank you for pushing so much change, build a sense of humanity and more care among the community which ultimately allows us to speak to ourselves, "So you can be a better person, right?"

Affected by the pandemic, losing a job, and losing a loved one did not dampen the spirit to continue living. 2020 is the year with the most digital footprint 2020 is the year with the most viewed smartphone and laptop screens, for simply sharing, greeting one another, and doing our daily lives. CATCH SOME WAVES IN

MOROCCO AND ISRAEL DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS By Salam Palestine and International Center Salam UI 23

Morocco has become the latest Arab League country to agree to normalise relations with Israel in a deal brokered with US help. Morocco has become the fourth country in the Middle East and North African region to agree to establish full diplomatic relations with Israel, an 11th-hour foreign policy achievement for the lame duck Trump administration as it seeks to shore up regional support for Israel as a countermeasure to Iranian aggression. Agreements have also been struck recently with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan. Along with Egypt and Jordan, Morocco becomes the sixth Arab League member to normalise ties with Israel. Morocco was once home to one of the largest Jewish populations in the Middle East and North Africa, much of which fled to Europe and the US after Israel declared independence in 1948, leaving many Jews in Arab countries fearful for their safety. This move may encourage many Jewish Moroccans to visit their ancestral homeland as it now embraces Israel. As part of the deal, the US has agreed to recognise Morocco's claim over the disputed Western Sahara region. It is the subject of a dispute between Morocco and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which has been seeking to establish an independent state.

The deal includes the reopening of liaison offices in Tel Aviv and Rabat - shut in 2000 when low-level relations broke down after the outbreak of the Palestinian uprising - and the eventual opening of embassies. Officials said Morocco would grant direct flights to and from Israel for all Israelis. Significantly, the Trump administration's recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara raises concerns that Washington is legitimizing alleged oppression of populations in the area. Morocco's claim to the area is not broadly recognized, and the United Nations considers Western Sahara as a "non-selfgoverning territory." The disputed area lies between southern Morocco and Mauritania. Known to some as "Africa's last colony," it has been the heart of ambitious development plans by the Moroccan government, which is seeking to boost investments, create jobs, and appease the Sahrawi population that has long sought independence. Morocco occupies about 75% of the territory, according to the CIA World Factbook. After Spain gave up the rule of the area in 1976, Morocco and the independentist Polisario Front fought over the territory in a bloody guerilla war that pushed much of the group and its supporters into Tindouf, Algeria. Tens of thousands of people have lived in refugee camps to this day.

Officials with the Polisario Front maintain that the Moroccan government is looking to monopolize Western Saharan resources while giving little back to the local community of indigenous and other peoples. Fishing is a coveted industry in the region that employs more than 40,000 people in the Dakhla region alone. The latest move of Trump administration will not necessarily have an immediate impact on the ground because the dispute is seen as greater than the whims of the American president. In the absence of a referendum, the protracted stalemate between Morocco and the Polisario Front ultimately boils down to international recognition and a new independent state cannot be established without it. Today, the idea of an independent Western Sahara may have been significantly diminished - and the tensions that have been built up in recent months could be worsen.

Atrocity upon Uyghur and The Urgency to Stop It by Rozan Firdaus P. The year of 2020 has been a devastating year for the world, not only because there is a pandemic across the globe but also a humanitarian case that happened along 2020. One of them is the continuation of Chinese Government persecution upon Uyghur people. Chinese Government has a long history with the Uyghur people and most of them involve violence. Cultural and religious differences are two of the many reasons behind the persecution that happened. The Uyghur suffered many violations against human rights and because they are only the minority in the Chinese Mainland, their voice can be easily silenced by the iron fist of the government. The acts of violation have many types of forms such as violence from the government and the absence of Uyghur rights to speech. According to Human Right Watch, many of the Uyghur people's family members were prisoned without any clear legal cause and being detained in a concentration camp (HRW, 2018). The government collected many data of Uyghurs people such as voices and DNA samples to create a system to track and watch every movement of the Uyghur. Another act of human rights violation conducted by the Government is injecting an unknown substance to the Uyghur prisoner, it was all done by force and none of the prisoners know what the substances are and they were all refused to be injected but they have no power to do that. The world already knows the situation that occurs in Xinjiang, the home of Uyghur. However, there were minimum reaction shown by the world, some rally occurred in mostly muslim majority country to show solidarity with the Uyghur. Despite the rally that happened there were no follow up to stop China persecution upon the Uyghur, the need for follow up action is important to guarantee China to stop the persecution in Xinjiang. The Islamic international organization such as Organization of Islamic Corporation (OIC) should bring this Issue to an international scale by condemning Chinese action upon the Uyghurs in Xinjiang. The collective act from OIC to condemn China will give another shock to the world about the heinous thing that happened in Xinjiang, it is not a religion or group problem anymore it is becoming a humanity problem. As a human, the people all over the world should feel sympathy for what happened to Uyghurs and should act to prevent this atrocity from happening over and over again. Therefore, the need for action to stop this human rights violation that occurred is really important for humanity itself. Not only Islamic countries should be concerned about Uyghurs but all people in the world should put a concern into it because what happened in Xinjiang could happen anywhere if this atrocity continued.

How was Ramadhan In South Korea? by Nilamsari Putri at Ramadhan Around The World Talk on May 20th 2020

Ramadan vibe in Korea was absolutely different as well as the government policy since Islam is minority here. There are some muslim communities that hold events like ifthor, i’tikaf and ied prayer. The activities during ramadhan was centered in mosque/musholla. However, because of the pandemic, the taraweeh prayer is held in our own place/house. Other activities like I’tikaf, breakfasting together were also cancelled.

The islamic lectures were also held online, adjusting the policy applied here such as the school was closed, etc. Starting from may 6th, the policy was actually changed a bit and allowed us to pray in some mosques in Korea. There were also Jummah prayers and taraweeh, followed by health protocol. For example, the distance must be 1 m at least. UNSPLASH.COM

Actually, the online islamic lectures were not something new in Korea. Since we were a minority, the islamic lectures were not spreaded well in all regions in Korea. Therefore, to reach the other muslims live in other regions, the islamic lectures were held online.

How was Turkey during Ramadhan and Covid-19? by Adib Lutfi at Ramadhan Around The World Talk on May 20th 2020

The early breakfast (suhoor) in Turkey was kind of late around 3.30 am. The breakfast was 08.30 pm. So we fasted for around 14 hours. It was 17 hours in the previous year. Many people believe that Turkey is a religious country, but actually it is not completely true especially in Istanbul. The culture and habits in Istanbul are more into European culture, so we can tell that there are some countries which are religious and others are secular. In Turkey, starting from March 16th, public places had been closed including the mosques. Jummah prayer was held at home. The government policy was done in order to beat this pandemic. The international flight was also closed. There had been a lockdown applied since the beginning of ramadan. We were not allowed to go outside at all. We felt such different conditions from the previous year where we could breakfasting together in Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Those all were something that I missed. Oh, and during lockdown, there were cops monitoring the activities. The same thing happened in Italy. Although it was locked down, fortunately we got food supply. The good thing happens in Turkey is that the Turkish do not need to think twice to give, even to a foreigner. So it is often for us to get something like groceries, a shopping voucher, etc. It even could be twice or three times. The food was also a main course like chicken, etc. That is why I felt people here like to help each other. Within a week there will be a lockdown, sometimes 2 days or 4 days. When access is opened, you can go out to buy lockdown preparations. However, the mosque cannot be opened/However, the mosque is still closed. This year’s Ramadhan, all activities are held online. Insyallah, the government targeted on 28th of May will back to normal but there would still be social distancing. For Indonesian students in Turkey, we feel safe here. Staying in Turkey is the best choice at this time.

V i b n e a s h i n d a U SA m a R by Felita Ulfah Fauziyyah at Ramadhan Around The World Talk on May 20th 2020

If we talk about euphoria, there is no euphoria since in America, Islam is minority. Here we learn to respect others. We can control ourselves but we can’t control other people. People already know that I’m Moslem because I'm using hijab. If I meet another Moslem, we just say “Hello” to each other. Despite that it is possible for us to become friends. The relationship between Moslems is very close even though there are different madzhab. Here, we prioritize the sense of sisterhood or brotherhood because we are a minority. Indonesian people in Los Angeles have built and opened the first mosque, named At-Thohir Mosque. The funds come from one of the rich people there and were also the contributions of the Indonesian people. This mosque used to be a former church. Even though it has been used for prayer, recitation, and stuff, there is still a sign of the cross because we need funds to cut the cross. Indonesian kids here are different in terms of religion from Indonesian kids in Indonesia. In Indonesia, even though they study at public school, they still got prayer lessons. Here, it’s a bit difficult because it’s secular. Parents who want to teach their children usually take them to the mosque.

27

The community is quite active here, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. However, because I work in an environment with the majority are Moslem, I still feel the islamic environment. Ramadhan here is already quiet and because of the pandemic, it has become more quiet. Last year, we still had an ifthor together, but because of the pandemic we have to do it in our own place. If maghrib prayer come, we often turn on the Youtube adhan so we still got a bit of ramadhan euphoria. Covid in America still got the highest place in the world. Here, each state has a governor and can make their own laws, regulations, etc. In the state itself there are also cities which are governed by mayors and can make their own laws/regulations. In Los Angeles, the rapid test is free. Anyone can be tested whether there are symptoms or no symptoms. When it’s ramadhan during pandemic, Moslems here were afraid about their immune system going down. The governor is fast enough to deal with assistance during the pandemic here. As long as we pay taxes, we can get help. Assistance from the central government, state, and city can be obtained from each of them. The challenge of fasting here is more on the hour, we are also worried that our immune system will decrease due to fasting, there are also many people who don't know Islam. Also, I have been followed by foreigners because I’m wearing a hijab. Closer to Eid, the fast is longer due to near the summer. Here, also exists an anti-lockdown, usually from the state that has a few cases of Corona Virus.

Until now, Brunei has been led by 29 Sultans. There is 1 book written by an Indonesian entitled "Islamic Malay Philosophy of Meraja''. In the book, it is said that the sultan's first lineage is related to Ahlul-Bait. In 2007, at the commemoration of Eid al-Adha, in his greeting, the Sultan wanted this country to be based on dhikr. That is why, the State of Brunei Darussalam is a country based on dhikr with the Ahlussunnah wal jamaah madzhab.
