Notes for an Ideal Sunday in Bogotá

Una ruta sugerida de actividades y sitios para visitar durante un día de ocio. A suggested route of activities and places to visit on a leisure day.

os domingos a las nueve de la mañana, el Parque El Virrey se convierte en el Central Park bogotano. Un grupo de personas hace yoga alrededor de un árbol, otro practica tai chi cerca de la quebrada y otro se prepara para arrancar una sesión de Capoeira con tambores y atuendo incluidos. Corredores y ciclistas circulan por en medio y de vez en cuando se paran a tomar una foto o a contemplar alguna maroma yóguica. Si alguien sobrevolara el parque en ese momento, lo que vería serían núcleos de gente moviéndose a paso sincronizado y, alrededor de ellos, cientos de electrones deslizándose sin afán, disfrutando de la ciudad con sol, con árboles, sin carros; empezando el domingo al mejor estilo bogotano. Nuestra ruta comenzó entonces ahí. Subiendo por la calle 88, recorrimos, desde la autopista hasta la séptima, los 104.739 m² que tiene el parque. Aunque estuvimos tentados a montarnos en una de las caminadoras de los gimnasios ecológicos a la altura de la carrera 17 y a treparnos por una de las telas que unos acróbatas habían colgado del tronco de un November 2012

On Sundays at 9 a.m., the Parque El Virrey turns into the city’s Central Park. A group of people gathers around a tree to do yoga, another practices tai chi along the water, and another is about to start a Capoeira session, drums and outfits included. Runners and bikers circulate between them and occasionally make a stop to take a photo or contemplate a yoga pose. If someone were to fly over the park at that very moment, what they would see would be nucleus of people moving in sync and, around them, hundreds of electrons sliding with no rush, enjoying the sunny, green, carless city; getting the day started in the best Bogotá fashion. Our route started there. Walking up 88th Street, from the Autopista to the Séptima, we went through the 104.739 m² that make up the park. Although we were tempted to step on one of the treadmills in the outdoor gyms located near the Carrera 17 and to try climbing one of the curtains some acrobats had hung from an eucalyptus tree trunk, we finally decided to take a yoga class that was about to start. Por poco más de hora y media estuvimos con otras treinta personas haciendo saludos al sol y paradas de cabeza, tratando de esquivar los perros que, escapados de sus dueños, se cruzaban por encima de los mats. Hacia las once de la mañana, después de refrescarnos con un jugo en el concurrido café Illy de la carrera 15 con 88, emprendimos camino a la Zona G. Considerado por los bogotanos como uno de los sectores hip de la ciudad, inundado cada vez más de restaurantes y tiendas clase A, es el sitio perfecto para almorzar o hacer brunch un domingo en la ciudad. little over an hour and a half we joined thirty other people doing sun salutations and headstands while trying to avoid the dogs fleeing from their owners and stepping on our mats. Towards 11 a.m., after taking a fresh squeezed juice at the popular Café Illy in the Carrera 15 with 88th Street, we made our way to the Zona G. Considered by locals as one of the hip sectors of the city, flooded with A class restaurants and stores, it is the perfect place to have brunch on Sundays. We took a table at the terrace of Masa, a cafe-restaurant that opened a year ago and which decor, concept and menu remind many of the simple yet glamorous and cozy cafes of The Village in Manhattan. Perhaps that is the reason why a large part of its public is made up of foreigners -there was an Argentinean couple, a Japanese family, and a group of Americans near our table. The success 2

en algunos de los sencillos pero glamorosos y acogedores cafés de The Village en Manhattan. De ahí, quizá, que su público esté comprendido en gran parte por extranjeros -cerca de nosotros había una pareja de argentinos, una de españoles, una familia de japoneses y un grupo de norteamericanos-. “El éxito de nuestro restaurante es la autenticidad”, dice Julián Jaramillo, uno de los propietarios del local. “Este es un negocio familiar y, siempre nos verás a sus propietarios atendiendo las mesas, horneando el pan o dándole la bienvenida a nuestros clientes”, agrega. Pedimos una canasta de panes y un café para empezar. Después, una ensalada de la barra y un tartine de salmón. El croissant de almendras (producto imperdible de la carta) lo pedimos para llevar y nos lo fuimos comiendo mientras caminábamos por la ciclovía rumbo a Usaquén, siguiente parada de nuestra ruta. La colonial plaza, ubicada entre las calles 116 y 121 arriba de la séptima, es uno de los sitios domingueros por excelencia. Músicos, artistas, cuenteros y artesanos se reúnen alrededor del centro histórico del barrio y ofrecen una gran variedad de espectáculos y actividades durante todo el día. of our restaurant is the authenticity”, says Julián Jaramillo, one of the owners. “This is a family business and you will always see the owners waiting tables, baking the bread, and welcoming the clients.” We ordered a breadbasket and a coffee to get started. We continued with a salad and a salmon tartine. We ordered the almond croissant (a must-try of the menu) to go, and ate it while walking to Usaquén on the bikeroute (ciclovía). The colonial main square, located between Streets 116 and 121, a few blocks up the Carrera Séptima, is one of the dominical places par excellence. Musicians, artists, and storytellers gather around the neighborhood’s historical center and offer a great variety of shows and activities all day long. Once there, we stopped for a moment to watch the living statues and to listen to a harp concert. We went on to the Carpe Diem Market, located at the Seminario de Valmaría, near the mountains. Parecido al mercado de San Angel, en Ciudad de México, el sitio es lugar de encuentro de artesanos de todo el país y en él se pueden encontrar desde antigüedades, muebles y ropa, hasta bisutería y comidas típicas de diferentes regiones. Paseamos por entre las carpas un buen rato, probamos un té de coca y emprendimos el regreso nuevamente hacia la plaza. Para entonces, ya una treintena de personas se había acomodado en las escaleras de la iglesia y se reía de uno de los chistes que el cuentero Fabián David Ortiz acababa de relatar. Oír cuenteros es una de las actividades tradicionales de los domingos en Usaquén y la gente lleva haciéndolo sagradamente todos los domingos por más de quince años, dice Pablo Torres, otro de los narradores de la zona. “Nosotros no vivimos de esto. Tenemos otros trabajos y contamos cuentos

simplemente porque nos gusta, porque queremos divertir a la gente”, complementa Ortiz. Nos quedamos para oír el final del relato y hacia las tres y media de la tarde, calculando el tiempo para llegar antes del cierre del Museo de Arte del Banco de la República, salimos para La Candelaria, en el centro de la ciudad. Queríamos ver la recientemente inaugurada exposición del fotógrafo alemán Wolfgang Tillmans. Muchas de las imágenes que lo han hecho famoso estaban expuestas a gran escala, mezcladas con postales, recortes de revistas y hasta documentos sobre los misterios del universo. Recorrer esta suerte de diario personal fue la manera perfecta de ir finalizando la tarde, y confirmamos que una visita a este museo siempre es una buena opción de domingo. Incluso si la de Tillmans es una exposición temporal, hay que saber que siempre hay algún artista de su talla en exposición. La última parada de nuestra ruta definitivamente debía incluir un vino y un buen libro.

Nos dirigimos entonces hacia La Macarena y y entramos al famoso local Andante. Escondido en el conjunto residencial Torres del Parque, es un café-restaurante que se ha convertido en lugar de encuentro para los escritores y artistas de la zona. Allí nos sentamos a hojear los libros que habíamos cargado todo el día entre la mochila, mientras tomábamos un malbec y compartíamos una ensalada de la casa. No pasó mucho tiempo antes de que afuera empezaran a caer las primeras gotas de un aguacero que, parecía, iba a durar toda la noche. “Justo a tiempo”, pensamos. Era lo único que nos hacía falta para dar nuestro domingo por bien terminado.

Hidden in the residential complex Torres del Parque (built by Colombian architect Rogelio Salmona and awarded the Alvar Aalto Medal in 2003), it is a meeting point for writers and artists living in the area. We sat down and leafed through the books we had been carrying all day in our bags, while we sipped a glass of malbec and shared a house salad. It was not long before the first drops of a storm that was to last all night started to fall. “Perfect timing”, we thought. It was a way of ending our Sunday just right.
