Letter from the Director Dear Friends of SAW, We have reached a goal that I have always imagined as possible, “the coalescence of the 90 parts.� For many years now, I have envisioned that SAW is comprised of 90 moving parts running at different rates, levels and temperatures. It is my belief that if we are able to marry, merge and crossover these seemingly discordant parts, Salem Art Works will become a self-perpetuating entity. Existing on its own terms, SAW constantly allows for interfaced collaboration and for an atmosphere where people and their ideas can evolve beyond seemingly set limitations and boundaries. These core, structural underpinnings are comprised of the deep commitment of the people who have taken part in this organization’s development since its inception. All efforts, energies and support greatly affect the perpetuation of our mission and the continuing health and future of our shared endeavor. Artist Programs
Salem Art Works offers residency options for artists of all levels working in any medium. Whether an Artist Internship or a Fellowship, the residency programs allow for artists to develop their work in a creative and supportive environment. All programs include housing, meals, staff support, and 24-hour access to studio spaces and on-site facilities. Another strong component of our artist program is community involvement. Living in a community of artists enables learning and personal growth through the exchange of ideas and techniques. This manifests during group evening meals prepared by the residents on a rotating cooking schedule, participation in local cultural events, and weekly presentations of past and ongoing work. The nature of the campus, however, allows for both communal and solitary experiences. Artists looking for silence and serenity may find it throughout the grounds, fields, and forest, or in a camper set back from the campus center. SAW supports discussion and collaboration though weekly studio visits as well as presentations from resident and visiting artists. Artists are encouraged to reach out to the SAW community during their stay in whichever way they feel is most appropriate in relation to their work. Orientations are provided for each arriving guest at Salem Art Works. SAW’s staff is here to support the creation of every artist’s work. Artists should never hesitate to ask for help or information regarding facility use or residential concerns. 2012

Artist Programs Fellowships SAW offers a limited number of fellowships. These residencies vary on average from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the project proposed. SAW selects applicants whose vision will be realized best at Salem Art Works. All proposals must be for new work, and must detail how Salem Art Works’ community and unique multi-media facilities will assist in the completion of the work. Artists of any medium are accepted. During colder months, SAW suggests writers, visual and performing artists who can work in enclosed, shared studio spaces apply. Fellows are provided with modest room and board, studio space and facility access for no fee* and a stipend of $25 per week. Aside from producing new work, fellowship artists are required to reach out to the community. Fellows can fulfill this requirement in whichever way the artist sees most appropriate. Applications for the Fellowship Program are accepted on a rolling basis, however space is limited and artists are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
Self-Funded Residency Self-Funded Residencies provide an opportunity for artists or a group of artists to immerse themselves in new projects and ideas in a creative environment, free from everyday pressures. Single artists and groups of any discipline are accepted. During their stay, artists are invited to present their work to the SAW community and to attend weekly on-site studio visits. The Self-Funded Residency fee is $350 per person per week for up to four months. The fee covers modest room and board, 24-hour studio space, and access to facilities*. Artists should contact the office to customize each residency to best utilize their time and SAW’s facilities. Artists who wish to work in iron, ceramics or glass will be subject to a material fee. Applications for the Self-Funded Residencies are accepted on a rolling basis, however space is limited and applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible. *GLO glass studio not included. Artist Programs Emerging Artist Program The Emerging Artist Program (EAP) awards four artists a year with a work exchange residency. In exchange for room, board, studio space and facilities access*, EAPs are required to work 20 hours each week as a shop technician or through general work. Shop technician work includes fixing and maintaining ceramics, iron, glass or blacksmithing studios with instruction from the program director. Knowledge of running a studio is required to fulfill duties as a shop technician. Another way to complete the work exchange is through tasks including grounds keeping, maintenance, gardening, assisting artists, and event preparation. During their stay, EAPs are asked to make a presentation of their work to the SAW community and are invited to attend weekly on-site studio visits. EAPs are also invited to contribute to SAW’s annual resident artist exhibition. All EAP applications must be received by April 1st. Artists will be notified of acceptance by April 15th.
Internship Programs Salem Art Works offers Artist Internships and Administrative Internships. The internship programs are an integral part of SAW. In exchange for 30 hours a week of work interns are provided with modest living accommodations (tent platform), board, 24-hour access to studios and facilities*, one workshop for material costs only and the experience of working in an artists’ community. Session One: May 23rd – July 29th Session Two: August 1st – October 7th Typical work for Artist Interns includes gardening, event preparation, gallery upkeep and installation, maintenance of residential facilities, studios and Cary Hill Sculpture Park. Interns are also asked to assist the staff in hosting guests and resident artists. This includes providing orientations, giving tours, and/or assisting workshop instructors. The Administrative Internship is geared toward those interested in arts management and administration. Administrative Interns work 30 hours a week for SAW working closely with the Associate Directors and the Artist Program Coordinator. Responsibilities can include organizational development, web management, bookkeeping, graphic design, media outreach, data entry, office upkeep and giving tours, gallery work, among other tasks. When interns are not working for SAW they are expected to take advantage of the facilities and focus on developing their own work. All interns are required to participate in weekly studio visits as well as give a presentation of their work. Interns are also invited to contribute to SAW’s annual resident artist exhibition. All internship applications must be received by April 1st. Artists will be notified of acceptance by April 15th. *GLO glass studio not included. Accommodations Life at Salem Art Works is communal. Everyone lives and works alongside one another, forging friendships and sharing experiences. To ensure the best experience for all residents, we ask everyone to abide by the following guidelines: All staff, interns, residents, and guests are required to clean up after themselves throughout shared living spaces, studios and workspaces. To help SAW fulfill its mission as a green community, we strive to eat food grown locally or from our garden and everyone recycles, reduces waste and composts.

SAW maintains simple housing options: modified campers, tent platforms and a limited number of indoor rooms. SAW does not provide tents, tarps, or sleeping pads. All residents must bring their own bedding: sheets, blankets, etc., or can use SAW’s for a $15 deposit.
Our outdoor kitchen is always open and well stocked. Residents help themselves to breakfast and lunch while dinner is cooked by all residents and staff on a rotating schedule and is eaten together as a community. Prior to your visit, please inform the SAW office of any dietary restrictions to ensure the proper food is available upon your arrival.
Public transportation is available by train, bus or plane to Albany and Saratoga Springs. Pick up fee is $20. Please try to schedule arrivals between 9 am – 5 pm to ensure SAW staff is available for pick up.

Accommodations & Facilities Life at SAW During their stay, residents can relax in the Cribby with a book from the SAW library, watch a movie or access the internet with the communal computer. At night, play a game of pool or throw darts while listening to music in the pool room.
CNC Machine SAW is proud to announce our new CNC machine built on site for fabricating multiples in art and construction. The design, chosen for its portability is known as a “Joe’s 4x4 Hybrid with a Rack and Pinion Mod”. The CNC uses a Gecko G540 4 axis stepper motor driver to control 4 high-torque Nema 23 380 oz. stepper motors. Controlled by Mach3 operating system, the Hitachi M12VX, 2.25HP router is used to cut into wood and foam on the 4’ x 4’ cutting area. For updates and workshop information, please visit the website.

24-Hour Facilities Artists of any discipline are invited to use all of SAW’s available resources. Facilities and artist studios are located in repurposed dairy barns and houses throughout the property. Individual and shared studio spaces are available, allowing for artists to work in a private or communal setting. There are a limited number of indoor studios mainly reserved for artists whose equipment, materials or work will be negatively impacted by open-air studios. Movable walls, changeable lighting and additional furnishings are available to create conducive workspaces anywhere within the 119 acre surrounding landscape. All artists will be asked to go over rules and safety before using equipment and facilities. Artist safety is top priority. Technical assistance is available for artists who are unfamiliar with any equipment. Upon request, one on one tutorials are available for a fee to guests who desire additional assistance.

Music Facilities SAW is proud to announce starting this year, musicians in residence will have the opportunity to record at Edie Road Recording Studio in Greenwich, NY and Rich Rock Studio in Shushan, NY. Instruments at SAW include a drum kit, a spinet piano, electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitar, banjo, electric horn and trumpet as well as amps and microphones.
Edie Road Recording Studio: At Edie Road, musicians can rent the studio for eight hours a day with a professional sound engineer for $300 or without an engineer for $200. Above the studio is a 1,200 square foot loft that can be rented for an additional fee. Equipment available includes: Console:

Iron The 13th USUK International Cast Iron Sculpture Symposium Directed by Coral Lambert Dates: US Component: June 15th – June 30th UK Component: July 7th – July 22nd Fee: SAW: $700 + materials (room and board included) SSW: £350 + materials (room included) The 13th USUK Iron Symposium will take place for the first time at two venues: Salem Art Works, USA and Scottish Sculpture Workshop (SSW), UK. During each 15 day symposium, internationally selected artists will produce work in cast iron with experimental and traditional sand molds using a coke fired iron cupola furnace. In addition to artists’ presentations, panels and technical demonstrations, artists learn from each other by working together in the critically engaged environment created by the symposium and its unique sites. Highlights of the 13th USUK Iron Symposium at SAW include a public iron pour in Salem Village on Saturday, June 23rd, an iron pour at SAW on Wednesday, June 27th and sculpture exhibitions at North Main Gallery and the Historic Salem Courthouse on Saturday, June 30th. An iron pour with live fire performances will take place at Scottish Sculpture Workshop, in the UK. 6th Annual Intercollegiate Iron Pour With Julie Anne Ward Dates: September 21st – 23rd Fee: $75 + materials The 6th Annual Intercollegiate Iron Pour is a chance for college students from across the nation to come together to share techniques, ideas and resources in iron casting. Participants spend the weekend working in groups to prepare the furnace and pour site. The $75 fee includes participation in the pour as well as meals and camping for the weekend. Interested participants should contact the SAW office as well as their respective art departments. Iron The foundry at SAW is an arts education and training facility where professional artists and students are encouraged to engage in all stages of the casting process. Facilities include a coke fired furnace with a 600 pound capacity, a 3,100 square foot mold making studio, a wax melt out kiln for investment castings and a fully equipped metal shop for finishing work. Consumables such as core glue, grinding discs and lumber are available.

Ceramics Wood-fire Intensive With Jordan Becker & David Soo Dates: September 14th - 23rd Fee: $550 Camping and meals available for a discounted rate of $30 a day for participants who want to stay on site. This 10 day workshop gives an opportunity for ceramic artists to immerse themselves in the complete process of firing an anagama wood kiln. Three full days will be spent loading the kiln, taking in account for the movement of the flame and desired surfaces on pieces. After loading, the kiln will be fired for five days and four nights by five workshop participants and two instructors. Participants may bring up to 8 cubic feet of either bisqued or bone dry pieces (clay must be cone 10) to be fired in the kiln. Included will be an evening lecture and slide presentation of the history of wood-fired ceramics. Level: All levels with clay experience Age: 18+
Wood-fire Fellowship This fellowship provides an opportunity for a selected ceramic artist to work independently in clay for 4 days in SAW’s ceramic studio between May 15th and June 15th. The clay artist will also join the crew from July 7th - 15th for the loading and anagama firing and can put up to 8 cubic feet of work in the kiln. The crew will prep, load, fire and unload the kiln. Ceramics SAW’s Ceramics program features an annual 10 day intensive firing workshop, a fellowship and individual firings in the Anagama kiln. Holding over 120 square feet of ceramic work, the kiln is fired for an average of four days and nights by a team. The result is a truly unique surface, made by wood ash melting on every piece. All work made for the anagama must be cone 10 clay, which may be purchased at SAW. The ceramic’s studio also has an electric kiln, kick wheels, basic clay tools, bats, shelves, and enough space to work on any scale.

Glass Glass 101 With Jim Gallagher & Leif Johnson Dates: June 23rd & 24th or June 30th & July 1st September 8th & 9th or September 15th & 16th Time: 10 am - 4 pm Fee: $250 This is a chance for students to explore the exciting medium of blown glass. Each weekend the class will concentrate on a particular aspect such as blowing bubbles, vessel making or color application. Students will be led through a series of demonstrations of tools and techniques to help them understand the principles of glass blowing and glass sculpture. The class will then try out the techniques as a group. Each student will have the chance to work one on one with an instructor, creating a finished piece to take home. Students are encouraged to bring their own ideas, a lot of energy and patience. Students must wear closed toe shoes, long sleeve cotton shirts and thick cotton or denim long pants. Level: Beginner – Intermediate Age: 14+
GLO Shop Rental GLO is available for rent at a daily rate. Those interested in renting for more than one week should contact the office to customize shop rental experience and fee. This summer SAW offers a variety of workshops in multiple disciplines. Instructors are regional and national artists who give students plenty of time and space to experiment with the new skills and artistic processes learned. Classes are held in SAW’s workspaces as well as throughout the unique landscape. With workshops available for students of all levels and ages, SAW is the perfect place to continue education and training or to start learning a new art form.

Summer Workshops: June Advanced Hammer Workshop With Patrick Quinn Dates: June 9th & 10th Time: 9 am - 4 pm Fee: $140 This class will teach you step by step how to make a 2.5 pound forging hammer from two inch solid round 1045 tool steel. In groups of two you will learn how to forge the hammer blank, and slit the hole with the 250 pound Little Giant, drift with a striker, and draw out the peen on the Little Giant. Heat treating will also be covered in this class, and the students will walk away with their very own, hand made hardened forging hammer. Power hammer experience is a must. This is a large hammer and the class is for advanced smiths only. Level: Advanced
Garden of Grace Yoga Retreat With Kathy Toris-Rowe, Rob Farella and Kasia Bilinska Dates: June 8th – 10th Fee: $149 *sign up by May 10th Picturesque Washington County is the backdrop for our yoga and art retreat. It is a blend of yoga classes, live music, breathing techniques and meditations. Deepen your practice through self-reflection, inspiration and celebration while enjoying the beauty and nature at the foothills of the Adirondacks. Explore the artist within you while discovering your creative spirit. This retreat will provide a safe and encouraging environment. The workshop fee includes campsite accommodations, four yoga classes for all levels, two meditation sessions, kula time bonfire celebration, locally sourced food and time to relax. Summer Workshops: June Landscape Painting in Oil With Harry Orlyk Date: June 8th - 10th Time: 5 pm – dark Fee: $180 In the transition between late afternoon and night, the land in spring’s full bloom around the agricultural village of Salem begs to be painted. Come to SAW with your plein air paint kit and work with a landscape painter who has kept a daily account of the regions light and color for over thirty years. Participants should prepare as many as half a dozen small paintable surfaces for each of the three sessions. Level: All
Welding 1 With Gary Humphreys and Mason Hurley Dates: June 9th & 10th Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm Fee: $150 In this beginners’ workshop students will spend the first day being introduced to oxy-acetylene welding, heating and bending. For the purpose of expediency MIG welding will be the primary focus but workshops can be customized. Students will be led through health and safety instruction and then will practice the basic techniques on scrap metal provided. With these skills, students will spend the second day constructing a metal piece of their own creation. Students should come with ideas or sketches of work they are interested in fabricating. If more time is needed to complete projects, students may use the welding facilities the following week, working independently for $40/day. Long sleeved cotton shirts, thick cotton or denim long pants and leather boots are required. Students should bring pencil and paper to sketch out ideas and take notes. Level: Beginners Age: 14+
Stained Glass: Copper Foil Method With Liz Peltekian Dates: June 8th - 10th Time: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm Fee: $200 This three-day workshop will cover the formal techniques of the copper-foil method of stained glass creation for those with no prior stained glass experience. The course will cover the importance of design of the piece, cutting glass, foiling, soldering, and finishing. Safety, equipment and tools will also be covered. The instructor will give demonstrations and also work with each student to ensure the proper technique is used for glass cutting and soldering. Each student should expect to take home a piece. Summer Workshops: July Welding 2: Building Sculptures with Found Objects With Anthony Cafritz Dates: July 14th & 15th Time: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm Fee: $150 This class is offered to students who have some welding experience and wish to learn more in-depth welding techniques as well as incorporating other materials in creating sculpture. Students will have access to oxy-acetylene for cutting and bending, MIG welders and finishing tools as well as materials. Students may use the welding facilities the following week, working independently for $40/day Long sleeved cotton shirts, thick cotton or denim long pants and leather boots are required. Students should bring pencil and paper to sketch out ideas and take notes. Level: Intermediate and Advanced Age: 18+
Basic Photography With Colin Gray Dates: July 14th & 15th Time: 12 pm - 4 pm Fee: $100 In this workshop, students will learn the essentials of photography including composition, lighting and camera settings. Additionally, students will learn how to edit images through a Photoshop demo. Students will walk through SAW’s 119 acres to shoot the barns, landscape and sculptures as subjects. Students should bring their own camera. Level: Beginner Age: 14+
Introduction to Blacksmithing With Leif Johnson Dates: July 14th & 15th Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm Fee: $140 In this class, through demonstrations and discussions students will gain a basic understanding of blacksmithing by designing and forging a pair of functional tongs. Using the techniques they have learned, students can create a project of their own. Students will learn skills and techniques of traditional and modern iron working as well as the equipment, safety and tools used. Welding 1 With Gary Humphreys and Mason Hurley Dates: August 11th & 12th Time: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm Fee: $150 In this beginners’ workshop students will spend the first day being introduced to oxy-acetylene welding, heating and bending. For the purpose of expediency MIG welding will be the primary focus but workshops can be customized. Students will be led through health and safety instruction and then will practice the basic techniques on scrap metal provided. With these skills, students will spend the second day constructing a metal piece of their own creation. Students should come with ideas or sketches of work they are interested in fabricating. If more time is needed to complete projects, students may use the welding facilities the following week, working independently for $40/day. Long sleeved cotton shirts, thick cotton or denim long pants and leather boots are required. Students should bring pencil and paper to sketch out ideas and take notes. Level: Beginners Age: 14+ 2012

Summer Workshops: August Forging Organic Elements With Ron Bakerian Date: August 11th & 12th Time: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm Fee: $150 In this workshop students will learn forging tools and techniques needed for creating organic shapes with emphasis on leaves and branches. Students will have time to create a piece of their own with the techniques learned. Levels: All Age: 14+ Students under the age of 14 must have parental supervision.
Printmaking Without a Press With Kathleen Loomis Date: August 11th & 12th Time: 10 am - 2 pm Fee: $100 Students will learn a new, unconventional process to printmaking. In this class, students create embossed prints by using a truck as the press. Levels: All Age: 18+

Summer Workshops: September Welding 2: Building Sculptures with Found Objects With Anthony Cafritz Dates: September 15th & 16th Time: 9:30 am - 4:30 pm Fee: $150 This class is offered to students who have some welding experience and wish to learn more in-depth welding techniques as well as incorporating other materials in creating sculpture. Youth Programs Art 101 Art 101 is an innovative workshop exposing students to glassblowing, blacksmithing, ceramics, welding and plein air drawing and painting. Offered to high schools in the fall and spring, these classes are designed to augment the artistic programs in public and private schools that may not have the means or facilities to provide these technical opportunities. This workshop is not just a way for students to learn about art, it is also a great opportunity for them to engage in the world through the prism of artistic creation and appreciation. If you or your high school is interested in participating in Art 101, please contact the SAW office.
Finger Paint Printmaking With Kathleen Loomis Date: Saturday, July 14Âth Time: 10 am Fee: $40 One of the focus points for this workshop is to allow children to gain access to the printmaking process. There is no need for an expensive printmaking press here, we will use our hands and feet to apply the pressure necessary to produce vibrant pieces of art. Working on 3 sheets of printmaking paper, children will learn to register prints, and develop deep rich colors by layering primary colors for each of many pulls. They will learn to listen with their eyes to determine what the print needs and when it is done. Age: 7+

Summer Workshops: Instructors Ron Bakerian began working in the forge as a practical approach to tool-making for large scale woodwork, which then developed into decorative and functional hand forged ironwork. Interest in the roots of the craft led Ron to work with other local smiths on primitive methods of iron production and experimental archaeology. His current work incorporates natural and organic motifs utilizing natural materials with forged work in functional and sculptural elements. Jordan Becker is a practicing artist and teacher in Washington County. He is a graduate of Bennington College, director of the ceramics program at SAW and director of ceramics at the Historic Salem Courthouse Community Center. Jordan constructed the anagama kiln at SAW and has been exploring the natural ash surfaces on his sculptures and pots.
Kasia Bilinska is a certified Hatha Yoga instructor who teaches Vinyasa flow, Yoga for Golfers, a unique approach to golf conditioning, and she is passionate about yoga Off the Mat which involves the yoga community in a positive social change effort across the globe. Following many years in medical science, Kasia added yoga to her life. She playfully weaves alignment, anatomy, music, mythic inspired stories, Vedic and Tantric philosophy that embrace the fullness of life. Kasia’s highest desire is to enable students to tap deeper into their potential and integrate yoga practice into the daily lives. Anthony Cafritz is the founding Director of Salem Art Works. He received his BA from Bennington College and his MFA from SUNY Purchase. Anthony has exhibited across the country and has taught at Union College in Schenectady, NY and Williams College in Williamstown, MA.

Summer Workshops: Instructors Rob Farella was a computer geek before he discovered yoga. The years in front of a computer and the stress of a corporate job had him seeking a new path. A chance to try yoga became a new career and way of life. Rob has been practicing yoga since 2004 and is now on the path to becoming an inspired Anusara instructor and has successfully completed Anusara 200 hour Teacher Training with certified Anusara instructors Ross Rayburn and Bernadette Birney. Rob brings love of all aspects of yoga to his classes and encourages his students to develop a home practice. Jim Gallagher started blowing glass in 1982 while attending the Philadelphia College of Art and later received his BFA from Alfred University. He has worked in various production studios, including his own, creating functional and sculptural glass art. His work is traditional in structure but contemporary in style.
Colin Gray graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2004. Having lived on both coasts of the US, as well as in Hong Kong, he has harbored a lifelong interest in travel and global cultures, and this love of people and places has influenced his photography into a unique blend of landscapes, portraiture and fashion. Colin is currently a VH1 photo editor at MTV shooting musicians, actors and entertainers.
Tara Hughes-Hall is a local multi-media artist who graduated from Bennington College in 2007. Tara has helped put together the arts projects for Salem Lunch & Learning Program for the last three years.

Summer Workshops: Instructors Gary Humphreys has been a principle in developing SAW into a multi-disciplinary facility. He is primarily a metal sculptor because it allows for the fabrication of creative largescale work. Gary’s aesthetic is strongly influence by his background in science and math. “I do this because I need to share my wealth of experience.” Mason Hurley graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a BFA in sculpture and painting in 2010. He has worked at SAW since then and is currently the Grounds Manager. His artwork is influenced by the mathematics of forms found in nature. Mason’s use of craftsmanship and repetitive movements plays an important role in the outcome of his art. Leif Johnson is a graduate of MassArt in Boston. He works in both forged iron and glass and has exhibited work internationally. “The process of blowing glass involves a quick-thinking collaborative dance for everyone involved, whereas blacksmithing is mostly a solitary, humbling process with hard-earned results. The challenge of taking such disparate materials and making them feel like they belong together is very gratifying.”
Coral Lambert is a British sculptor who is currently Head of Sculpture at Alfred University, New York where she also directs the National Casting Center’s Foundry Program. Lambert received her MFA in Sculpture from Manchester in 1990. She was an International Research Fellow in Cast Metals at the University of Minnesota from 1996 – 1999 and Chaired the 2006 International Conference on Cast Iron Art in Ironbridge, England. Lambert is internationally recognized for working in cast iron as well as producing large scale outdoor pieces and is a recipient of awards from The Gottlieb Foundation, Pollock Krasner and The Joan Mitchell Foundation.

Summer Workshops: Instructors Kathleen Loomis received her BA from Castleton State College in Castleton, VT and her MA in education from the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT. Her work includes alternative methods to printmaking on a large scale.
Harry Orlyk graduated from SUNY New Paltz in 1970 and later studied fine art at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1995. Harry lives in Salem and can often be found painting along local back roads.
Liz Peltekian first learned the copper-foil stained glass method in 1990 through a University of Wisconsin-Madison course and has been perfecting her technique since. Her work is abstract drawing on her anthropological background, but also is inspired by geometry, nature, and natural processes. Raised in Washington, DC, she has lived in northern Wisconsin for the past twenty years with her husband and three sons. She is an avid community volunteer and presently works for the National Park Service.

Summer Workshops: Instructors Patrick Quinn has developed his own unique style that combines his interest in the hollow form with his skills in blacksmithing. He is interested in creating works entirely from scratch and his finished products are truly handmade. Patrick’s work embodies the essence of being a skilled craftsman and the pride involved in building sculpture with exquisite craftsmanship. Patrick is currently working towards his MFA in Blacksmithing at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
David Soo began working in clay in 1971, and was introduced to anagama wood firing in 1989. A co-constructer of the anagama kiln at Salem Art Works, he has had the opportunity to learn from such respected artists as Peter Voulkos, James Makins, Lester Polakov and Peter Leventhal. David has exhibited in museums and received a New Jersey Council for the Arts Fellowship for outstanding excellence in ceramic art. Kathy Toris-Rowe is a certified Hatha yoga instructor with over eight years of teaching experience from various traditions including Hatha, Iyengar, Vinyasa, Yin, Restorative, Embodied Yoga and Chair Yoga. Kathy’s spirited, challenging and inspirational classes encourage her students to integrate breath and movement, awareness and alignment, strength and fluidity. She guides students to experience the whole range of yin and yang energy cultivated in yoga – from the purification of flowing sequences to the stillness of inversions and meditations. Julie Anne Ward received her BFA in sculpture from Georgia Southern University and her MFA in sculpture from The Ohio State University. She received her initial foundry training in Atlanta, Georgia at the Inferno Art Foundry. From 2001 to 2008 she was a resident artist at Sloss Furnaces National Historical Landmark in Birmingham, AL. 2012

In conjunction with the artist reception for Reality of Placement, curated by Alexis Mendoza, the evening will be a celebration of the rich heritage of a quiet culture and a vital part of our local farming community. Reality of Placement brings together 21 South American born artists that inhabit the worlds beyond political borders and as Mendoza states, “addresses issues such as migration and exile”. The meal will be sourced from local farms and prepared by local farmers.

Committed to enriching the local artistic community, Salem Art Works’ galleries and exhibitions aim to elevate the viewer’s aesthetic encounter. SAW seeks to create a hospitable environment that may demystify contemporary art, while simultaneously fostering an open environment for discussion. The galleries are flexible multiuse spaces, which host a number of events ranging from music and theatrical performances, community events, workspaces, critiques, lectures and beyond. Each gallery, through its unique physicality, becomes a catalyst for a diverse spectator experience. Providing supplemental exhibition information and establishing an open forum for personal aesthetic assessment, SAW looks to illuminate new arteries of understanding.
Barn 2 Gallery Under high vaulted ceilings of a converted dairy barn, Barn 2 is an expansive gallery, which boasts over 8,300 square feet of exhibition space. This gallery is one of SAW’s most active exhibition spaces, hosting numerous events annually. Concealed discreetly behind the gallery walls lay a number of artist studios and workspaces.
Cary House Gallery The Cary House Gallery is an intimate setting for viewers to engage artwork on a human scale. Transformed from a rustic farmhouse into an operative gallery for emerging artists, this gallery establishes a candid dialogue between artists and viewer. Within the confines of its informal walls, the Cary House Gallery contains work of the highest caliber. 2012

Cary Hill Sculpture Park The rolling hills of a former dairy farm have become home to Cary Hill Sculpture Park. Totaling 119.4 acres, the park is host to a rotating roster of regional, national and international sculptors and artists. Much like many of Salem Art Works’ spaces, Cary Hill Sculpture Park facilitates a wide array of performances, events, and exhibitions. The park also contains hiking trails and makes for an amazing place to have a picnic. Our sprawling campus incorporates a myriad of multiuse spaces, galleries, workshops, studios, open-spaces, and artwork; coalescing as the physical manifestation of SAW’s organizational mission.

This international artist exchange is taking place in Germany this year, but you can still be a part of it. While the artists are in residence at Schule Schloß Salem (Salem Castle) in Germany, SAW will live stream a performance in Barn 1. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience the continued evolution of this residency in preparation for its return to SAW in 2013.
