Exhibition: A Sense of Place: Fred Lynch and Michael McLaughlin Winfisky Gallery, ECC Artists Fred Lynch and Michael McLaughlin anchor their work in distinctly different landscapes. Lynch’s drawings share the experience of place in the walled, medieval city of Viterbo, Italy. Lynch captures perceptions as much as appearances as he explores the wonders of this place in the tradition of the artists of the Grand Tour in the 17th and 18th centuries. McLaughlin’s work is firmly anchored in the urban landscape, with a nod to the work of the Photorealists of the 1970’s and 80’s. The viewer is drawn in to his photorealistic paintings, themselves surrounded by miniature works lending additional context and depth. Gallery talks on selected Wednesdays during the exhibition. Visit salemstate.edu/arts for a complete schedule.

Harvey by Mary Chase Sophia Gordon Center $20 general / $15 senior / under 18 free Audience costumes welcome Halloween weekend! Elwood P. Dowd has a best friend that nobody else can see—a six foot white rabbit named Harvey. Elwood’s socially obsessed sister Veta loves her brother but becomes unglued as she tries to conceal his eccentricities while trying to find a suitable husband for her wallflower daughter, Myrtle Mae. Her attempt to have Elwood committed boomerangs into hysterical chaos while Elwood remains unchanged by the rigid world of rules he continues to ignore. Seventy-five years after its premiere, Chase’s Pulitzer Prize winning play remains heartwarming and hilarious. It also exposes our compulsion to silence those who do not conform to what is “correct” and our resistance to truly hearing those around us.

Poison of Choice by William Cunningham World Premiere Sophia Gordon Center $20 general / $15 senior / under 18 free Poison of Choice places the audience inside a graphic novel in a world that reeks of political corruption, sex, murder, addiction, and plenty of moral ambiguity. Author Alan Lubeck is trying desperately to get his mind out of the world of the graphic novel he has created, Terror Cell. He accepts a job from an old friend and finds himself in a world that mirrors that of his graphic novel and soon Alan doesn’t know which world he is in, the real or the imagined. With a splash of the Shakespearean and the flavor of film-noir, Poison of Choice presents a kind of “creative madness.” If you’ve been thinking lately, “Has the world gone mad or is it just me?” this evening of theatre may help you find the answer.
