WHAT IS THE CERTIFICATE IN HOLOCAUST AND GENOCIDE STUDIES? WHAT CAN I DO WITH IT?

The 15-credit graduate certificate is an interdisciplinary program designed to advance your knowledge and skills in the growing fields of comparative genocide studies and international human rights. Alumni of our program have gone on to advanced graduate programs and attained leadership and teaching positions at public and private schools, museums, nonprofit human rights and social justice organizations and the private sector.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The program is designed to prepare students with a theoretical and practical knowledge of the diverse field of comparative genocide studies including the evolving area of international human rights. The program engages the complex issues in these areas through seminars with scholars and experts, collaborative and independent research projects, study and travel courses and professional internships. Completion of the program requires one foundational course followed by your choice of four electives that meet your intellectual and professional interests and goals.

These exciting courses are available in multiple in-person and remote learning modalities including a completely online track to completion. We welcome students from across the region, nation and international students.

WHAT UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES AWAIT ME?

Students and graduates of the certificate program are encouraged to participate in the programs and utilize the resources of Salem State University’s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS). The center offers online and in-person lectures by leading international scholars, human rights leaders and artists; professional development workshops for middle and high school educators; research and graduate assistantships for certificate students; and a robust faculty-led study and travel courses to western and central Europe, Rwanda, Latin America and the United States. Students in the certificate program are given priority on these study and travel experiences and receive scholarships and course credit towards their program.
